[Q] Why Battery Draining Fast? - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have owned this phone for about 3 days, but I have some battery issues.
I attached 3 pictures, and on the first picture, you can see there appears to be no wakelocks, but on the 2nd picture, the Android OS used the vast majority of my battery life, and the 3rd picture, Android System has a lot of "Wake Up Device" (i don't know what the number means is it minutes?)..
I have uninstalled/disabled most of the apps I don't need, and have the brightness set to low, and on airplane mode with all sync off, and zenmotion turned off, and this still happens. I lost about 11% battery overnight with this problem. It seems like when I am using the device, the battery drops a percent every minute even when I am just scrolling through the Settings.
I only used about 1 hour screentime on this phone and the rest on idle.
I already installed both system updates.
Does anyone know why this happens? I know there is a memory leak problem, but I saw on another thread other people don't have that bad of a drain anymore...

For battery draining assistance see ZenUI app called ASUS Support: Apps/ASUS Support/Assistance/Battery/Battery drains fast/follow detailed troubleshooting steps. If battery still draining, recommend updating to latest firmware version and then performing a factory data reset. Please ensure to back up all important data as this will erase all data.

Mine seemed fine for a week and then I got this today. Pretty much done with it. Can't even get it to factory reset.

hello guys i am getting screen on time of mere 2 hours without any significant use on my ZF 2.... i have stock rom. no root nothing.... can anybody help me

Battery drain issue still not fixed with updates???

Disable PC Link and Party Link default apps, worked for me. They're default apps using cpu all the time like they're SO Android... Disable all default apps that you don't use too

I've got here two brand new models, which differ only for touch and battery version (Z2C3 01040005 1525 and ... 1526)
The 1526 doesn't show any drain. The 1525 does, as of its very first boot. I tried keeping same settings of course.
I'd like to point out that when connected and charging it shows big steps like going from 63 to 72% and it also reaches 100% in less than 60 mins.
When disconnected the discharge path exhibits about 1:15min of operation.
May I suspect the battery is defective?
PS: after a factory reset from recovery seems have fixed the problem for now at least...

Asus Zen phone 2 laser battery drain ?
I made an account with this website and took the time to write this, so I can let users who own this phone know one of the
biggest battery drain features I've found......DISABLE HOMESCREEN APP MOVEMENT SENSOR, in app icon settings.
When you tilt your phone app icon adjust to the tilt, yes looks cool until you realize how much battery you could save by leaving then static and not constantly running a fDucking tilt sensor.

hello,my zenfone ze551ml might be going to upgrade to mm 6.0, please tell me is it marshmallow stock rom camera better than 5.0? is it 6.0 have setting sd card become internal storage? is it 6.0 have mass big storage not just mtp when connected to pc ?

S4 Mini Battery life

Hi all fellow forum members! It was about time to retire my old Galaxy S2, and i decided to buy a S4 Mini. About the same size, better specs and everything. But i dont like the battery life at all. I dont think its normal for my battery to discharge 20% over 8 hours at night. Does anyone have the same problem? I have been trying different approaches. I installed Snapdragon BatteryGuru, put the phone on power saving mode all the time, even switched 3G off, although without 3G there seems to be an improvement, but I'll let you know how's that going. So my concern is that i might have a faulty device.. or software.. idk.. when i had crazy discharge syndrome on my S2 i just changed the kernel and/or the ROM. Any advice or opinions on the battery life of the S4 mini will be welcomed and appreciated!
I don't have too many battery problems, I guess. My phone has been off the charger for around 10 hours - and the battery has dropped to 85% - which I think it OK. I've sent some text messages, checked e-mails, used WhatsApp and had a few phone calls, not exceeding 10 minutes in total. Oh, and the GPS is on 24/7 for now, but I've just got the phone rooted, so this will not be the case any longer. The phone says it still have some 7½ hours left - which wouldn't be enough for an "all nighter" tonight.
I have disables many of the push notifications, which might be the reason why I think it's a fair battery life so far. I used to have the SGS2 as well, which lasted around the same as this phone I reckon. The biggest hog is the Google Services/Framework that takaroundes up 25% of the battery usage at the moment.
I have though of having getting an extra battery for this phone, as it's always nice to have one charged.
My I9195 uses about 3% during night (7 hours, 3G data and wifi off). Try to use an app to see wakelocks used on your device, e.g. Wakelock Detector or Better Battery Stats - they might provide you with some hints to apps that keep your mini from deep sleep, which can cause the battery drain.
Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If it's an I9195, can you try to disable NFC and see if it improves?
My biggest drain is the screen. The device lasts about as long as my friend's S2 (we were playing a coop game together) and then surfed the net over 3G for a while.
We both scrambled to look for a nearby charging socket at almost the same time
Thanks for your replies guys! I will try those apps and report back. Wakelock already found one of my apps that has awaken the phone 1200 times.. shieeeeeeeet.. hopefully now that I have disabled it things will go better..
Hi all! I have found the source of my battery drain. It's Google location services. Turns out it's a common problem on android 4.2.2. I tutned off Google location an I my phone drained 2% over 8 hours. Sync, wifi and 3g were also turned on. There is a fix over at the nexus 4 forums, but it requires root and I don't know if it will work on our galaxies. If you have root, google nip wakelock fix, try it and report back.
I had battery problems on my s4. Turns out it was the SD card. Removed it and battery improved. In the end I had to change it for a new one.

Which one did you use? Sandisk 32GB?
I got an S4 mini for my gf with that card and it has terrible battery life.
The battery drained from 100% at 7 in the morning to 15% at 5 in the afternoon...
That's surely not normal...
Edit:
I noticed that the "media" service took up almost as much cpu time and power as (active for 1,5 hours) as the mobile connection.
I suspect, that some corrupt media files or whatever kept the service alive, which tried to scan the DCIM folder over and over again.
I checked the SD Card which was full of almost 5GB of old pictures pictures which for some reason couldn't be deleted because of "unknown errors".
So I took the SD Card out and put it in a card reader, to back up the files. Then I deleted the files, put the card back and formated the card.
Then I copied only some of the new pictures back into the DCIM folder... I'll see tomorrow if that helped.
Battery Drain
Hi iconata,
Can you let me know how to "disable" Google location services, which you observed as the source of battery drain? I believe I have disabled it but the battery drain issue still persists.
And FYI - the following is the message I wrote to Samsung and am waiting for their test to validate the result of my S4 Mini. Based on what Samsung told me, the Safe Mode calls out same phone settings as Factory Default, but it seems the following test cases did reveal different resutls from what Samsung told me...
Message to Samsung
-----------------------------------
Hi,
Thanks for advising to check battery under Safe Mode. The following is the 3 test cases I have done but I still have BIG battery drain issue with my S4 Mini.
All the test cases were performed under same conditions:
1. 3G on
2. Power Save Mode on
3. Standby for 8 hours overnight, from 12:00am ~ 8:00am
Test Case-1: All the extra apps installed
- Battery drain: 3% per hour (as I already reported)
Test Case-2: Safe Mode; long press volume-down key, with Safe Mode shown at lower-left corner on desktop
- Battery drain: 0.7% per hour
Test Case-3: Factory default settings; reset to Factory Default setting; all the data were deleted and no extra apps were installed; the phone was back to the original Factory default setting
- Battery drain: 2.9% per hour
Test Case-1 and Test Case-3 almost came with same battery drain issue at same drop rate, so those extra apps installed for Test Case-1 shouldn’t have contributed to this battery drain issue so significantly. However, looks like Safe Mode and Factory Default were very different, although you thought the conditions of the 2 should be same.
I still have battery drain issue even after rolling back to Factory Default Settings, and I cannot live with Safe Mode. Please help.

Hi pudin! You can turn off Google location services from maps app. Go to settings->google location settings and uncheck allow Google to use your location. And to further improve that you can turn gps off, and turn it on when you need to. Yesterday I decided to root my phone because greenify was asking for root permission and everybody was putting the good word for that app. Turns out it's a total croc... you can hibernate downloaded apps, but you can't do the same with pre installed. 0 use. Further more I started to receive an annoying notification that my phone's security has been compromised and it needs to reboot. Got angry, downloaded an official firmware from sammobile, preinstalled, turned google location services off and got this pretty decent battery life. Screenies are below, feel free to post your thoughts. Please note that I keep BaterryGuru and PowerSave on at all time.
Battery drain
Thanks for prompt feedback iconata! Now I can confirm the Google location services have been disabled on my S4 Mini. Also, I don't enable GPS unless I need it so those battery consumption numbers were tested without GPS running in the background. I got the call from Ssmaung tonight telling me my phone consumes more power than what they tested, so I'll return it to Samsung for further diagnostic tomorrow. Will keep you posted if any update.
BTW, I'm not that kind of guy brave enough to root my phone like you guys...

battery drain during standby
Hi,
Checked the image you posted and it looks like you were still doing something such as making calls and playing game over night. Your 3% power consumption per hour is similar to mine, but in my case Cell Standby and Device Idle are the 2 major items consuming the power the most over night, when the phone really enters the standby mode. Try to have your phone enter the standby mode without doing anything over night and check if the result is still the same.
strange thing... my battery was showing 16% left.. and went dead..

New FW update that improves battery drain
In coincidence I got notified of a FW update just yesterday night, one day before I sent my phone into Service, and it did improve battery drain significantly, from 3% to just 1% per hour over night after I checked the phone this morning. You guys may want to check the update as well, and I'll test my phone again tonight.

Which firmware?
I flashed the pre-rooted MG4 (over the stock MG4) yesterday, wiped the phone and froze all the samsung bloatware stuff.
That thing is still draining about 4-6% per hour while just lying around untouched. The phone is in power saving mode.
new test factory reset, all bloatware removed, just whatsapp is installed

I still have 1.7% battery drain per hour I think is still bad
GMS arena seems to be the only site mentioning that issue:
Unfortunately the higher than average battery drain in stand-by mode prevented the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini from getting an impressive overall endurance rating. Even so it did more than well and if Samsung improves the stand-by time with future firmware updates, it might be one of the longest-lasting smartphones on the market.

Kernel (Android OS) battery usage very high

Hey Zenfoners
Happy with my phone but I have a problem with battery usage.
I'm using GSam Battery Monitor and Kernel (Android OS) under App Usage seems very high.
For example today the phone has used 26% in 5h 45m with 30 minutes of screen on time. Screen usage shows 18%
But App Usage is 56% and 48% of this is Kernel (Android OS). CPU usage for Kernel (Android OS) is 4h 10m. And the phone has only been on for 5h45m.
I can't check what is keeping wake lock because I don't have root.
On idle using wifi it is using 2-3% per hour when my LG G3 and Note 3 use about 1.5% per hour on idle.
Anyone else have this problem?
I'm glad I found your post. Highly frustrating with my zenfone 2. Massive battery drain with google apps and Android OS. Yesterday or it was Google Backup Transport, today it's some other google stuff. Would love to know how to properly debug this stuff. I tried disabling most of pre-loaded Asus stuff but who knows what's causing battery drain. I can lose over 1% of battery PER MINUTE.
I just did a factory reset and added these apps:
GSAM Battery
Dolphin browser
LINE Messenger
Touchpad keyboard
Google Inbox
Google Translate
Google Keep
Android OS is still being crazy. Amazing that you can buy a brand new phone and it fails almost out of the box, and it seems the OS developer is at fault. No wonder people are switching to iPhone!

So I installed a system update adorable through the menu which seems to be helping now. Android OS still seems the biggest battery drain but at least the drain isn't outrageous like it was before. There's a discussion about the fix on reddit about it:

Were you rooted before? For the 1st "Battery Used by App" screenshot?
I've not been rooted so on the latest s/w update. Haven't seen behaviour like this on any of my recent devices. Terrible battery usage when idle, and all my Google settings (location, backup, etc) are the same.
Well i almost get at 100% of battery status of battery life almost 3 days.
Firmware : 2.15.40.13 Pre-rooted system.img by Shakalaca
Xposed module for ZF2 installed + Greenify (Donate) app
Basically i geenifed all system apps {some you cant greenify) including power saver app which is build in + normall apps.
I will add SS when i will charge battery to 100%.
I cant understand why people gettin device discharging after 6 hours etc.
Follow my guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/how-to-upgrade-cn-version-to-ww-t3101556 to update to the latest WW OTA
Xposed : Here
I'm on the latest WW firmware but I shouldn't have to root, greenify etc. Didn't do it on my Note 3/HTC One/LG G3. What's the point in having 4GB of RAM if you're flushing it every few minutes. I do have location settings and history on, as they were with previous phones, but everything else is very conservative. Zenfone 2 is the only one that shows crazy Android OS usage with same apps and same sync/backup/location etc settings. All on Android 5.0 too!

How you can compare different phones according to the battery life if they were made in different technology and they using Snapdragons not Intel components.
Thats wrong mate
If you moaning about battery life in ZF2 you should compare it with diff zenfones ( ZF5,ZF6 etc.) or other Intel based devices
Note 3 was an Exynos.
So Intel = still bad then
I haven't rooted or anything. Battery life is now acceptable but Android OS is still near the top, but nothing crazy like it was before the system update. Does your build number match mine? I have the TW phone, so I assume TW software.
Battery graph shows almost continuous usage with screen almost always on.

Same build number except for ASUS_Z00A (1.8 ghz 4gb RAM) model.
Well ROOT + XPOSED + GREENIFY = 8 Days show battery )
From 23:00 at previous day i left phone with turned on WiFi . Overnight for 9h it drained 4% of the battery so chart is correct.
I fix my battery drain in this way:
Install all OTA updates
Factory Reset.
Reinstall All.
Battery drain seems to be only if you install an OTA without Factory Reset and with all apps already installed.
It take several hours to reinstall all ... but it works !
No more battery drain here !
I done a wipe cache instead of factory reset. You reckon it's the same thing or would I get better results v so th reset? Currently getting 5-6 hours sot with 2.3ghz 4g2g ram. Thanks

I did factory reset, install OTA update, and reinstall all. Had one good day. Today, I've lost 6% in about 30 minutes. Even more amusing, the biggest consumer is Wi-Fi ... Which isn't even turned on! Crazy stuff.

[Q] WIFI and android OS Causing battery drain. How to fix?!!?

I have some battery problems with my ASUS phone. It spends so much energy without any reason. I have tried to change OTA ( 2.17.40.12 [no root] and 2.13.40.13 [root] ) a couple of times but still nothing. Even when I try to reset factory settings, I have no results. Another wrong indication is that it shows wifi on, but I have it off. I don't use the device at all, but I see the battery goes down 3% every 10 minutes.
plz help me
Same problem with me. I can't figure out what's causing all the battery drain and the phone heats up a lot. I have used other phones before with all bt, wifi, data on all day I have no issues with them. Only with this phone. I can only get a 4-5 hours usage time. charging takes up to 3 hours?
Anyone can clarify this? I have the Ze551ML Asus_Z00AD version 1.8ghz, 4gb ram, 32gb internal. I don't have the fast charger either
Try going into the WiFi settings to see if WiFi scanning is on. That has been known to drain battery
It's a native 5.0 problem. I'm sure everyone has this problem right now. We just have to wait for an OTA...
Best now, is that you use amplify, Greenify, and servicely to minimize wakelock

Having "Android OS" as the top consumer isn't a native Lollipop issue. I haven't seen it jump so high on my Nexus 4, which I have left on an older version of 5.0 from last year. When 5.0 was 1st ported to the G2 some kernel changes later fixed Android OS, so I believe Asus can fix a problem that was fixed by non-professionals.
Wi-Fi should also perform better too, looks like Asus' engineers have a lot of work awaiting them. Too bad for them b/c when that ZenPad and selfie release things will get worse.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"
I had battery problems too upon purchasing, then i suddenly thought to cycle the battery, charge it up then let it drain without using it until it turns off and then charge it up until full while turned off. My battery now is much better
Mine was great until the most recent OTA. It installed on 05/31, I don't have the phone with me to see what the build number is, but I am now experiencing the battery drain. Before this OTA I would have 50-60% battery left at the end of the day, last night it died well before then.

I want asus support unlock bootloader
Tks
I tried to clear my cache hoping it would help with the battery drain. I wasn't patient and thought the phone froze while clearing the cache and restarted it. I've now read that it can take 10 minutes to clear. When it restarted it was the flashing dead android. I was able to fastboot erase cache (took a couple of seconds) and It was good to go. I went ahead and did a factory reset. My NFC didn't seem to be working, so I wanted to see if that would fix it. It may still not be working. My phone now has much better battery life. It has been downloading and installing apps for three hours now (slow internet loading ~65 apps), and I have been setting up my home screen. It is at 90%. Doing much better, like it was before.
I'm on Z00A-2.17.40.12_2050515
Tl;dr: a complete wipe helped with my battery after the most recent OTA.

My battery lasts four hours without even using the phone. We shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get something that is even usable. THIS is ridiculous.

I'm on Z00A-2.17.40.12_2050515
Tl;dr: a complete wipe helped with my battery after the most recent OTA.

did the factory reset restore all the bloatware for you? i want to try it but i don't want that bloatware to come back
The bloatware was back, but the battery performance is better. I removed the bloatware I could again. I haven't rooted the phone.

So non-root performs better?
I don't think so. My wife also now has a Zenfone 2. Same model as mine, the 4gb ram 64gb model, also has the most recent OTA. Hers is non-rooted as well and has the battery drain, but only if the wifi is on. We tried a factory reset and clearing the cache. It didn't help.

Actually, it is. It has to do with play services. Good for your nexus 4 but read up on the forums. It's an android issue. Every ROM I've used for my HTC one has it, gpe, aosp, sense.
Had a nexus 5 and It sounds like that native 5.0 lolly pop issue, where it as constantly scanning for 5HZ Frequency, you could try and lock it in to 2.4GHZ setting under WiFi advanced. See if that helps.
Root the phone and delete the crap with titanium backup. I did this on the latetest update and battery is better then my Samsung s5. Turn screen from auto to quarter of the way. I have WiFi and my data is with wind mobile in Canada so it is always looking for signal. Take a look at battery from today. Been off charger since 5am til 10pm.

zenfone 2 battery drain issue..HELP techies

will rooting my zenfone 2 improves my battery performance .??
.its draining like hell. android OS eats the major part of it
my phone is just 1 week older . and such a poor back up i m dealing with.
reply fast as i m planning to switch to samsung again..
thanks in advance
Some help by root and install amplify and greenifty but its only some

It's the screen-on-time that kills me (1% drain every ~3 minutes) which I don't think it paints an accurate picture (1% drain for 1:45 SOT) over Android OS - which is still high (44%) - but manageable in sleep (< 1% drain per hour).
It's a good thing I am a light user.
I can, and usually do, charge every second day (by then it drops to ~40%).

Anyways are using the power saving app or do use performance mode?after root install use root booster, greenify, and look in internet for more help
Use latest firmware 2.20.40.58
Disabke most unused apps after update and to check sot see about screen in battery usage, after update there will be improvement
The probelm is the buildin battery saving mode doesn't work as it say
The ultra saving or smart saving mode should be able to let some apps pass through but apparently it won't let any apps goes through even you set it in the exception list

To help improve battery life
1. Please ensure to turn off 'Wifi Scanning always available.'
2. Recommend updating firmware to latest version http://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1009748
3. Please also see the following information showing 8 ways to extend the ZenFone 2 battery Life. http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1012981/
4. If still no improvement then recommend performing a hardware reset including cache wipe partition http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011956/ and try steps 1 & 3 again.

But the latest version of software turns on Wifi Scanning always available every time you switch to either Performance or Balanced modes. And even if you manually turn it off, you have to do it every time you charge the phone because in these modes the setting is reactivated to "on" when the charger is unplugged!
As mentioned above, using Smart Saving restricts apps (even if they are on the exceptions list) meaning that notifications do not come through, so its not a viable alternative.
Here's a battery usage screen shot from my phone...
I don't know what is that "Android OS" doing there :|
Does anyone know a solution?

Battery Question

Guys,
i need some help. Over the last two days, my battery has just gone. The attached screenshots are from earlier this morning. I'm really not sure what's causing this. I lost 11% in under an hour and my phone was telling me it has 4 hours of battery left. I haven't installed anything new in the last two days.
I've tried using better battery stats in the past. I'm not sure how these apps work. I noticed my cell service isn't that good but I'm at home, always on WiFi. Can someone point me in the right direction? This phone is not even two months old.
Thanks in advance.
I highly advise you to turn aeroplane mode on and enable WiFi calling if you have it. It saves so much battery! This is whilst your indoors of course. Keep your brightness below 40, disables location when you don't need, disable auto update and sync behavours, disable NFC and Bluetooth if not being used. Disable animations via developer menu.
Your screenshots don't seem to show how much battery Android OS is using and there's nothing battery draining in what you did include, so I don't know that anyone can really do a lot to help you beyond offering very general suggestions.
What Rom or version of Android are you running? If you are running stock did a monthly OTA update install recently? It is that time of the month.
It's possible you have a rogue app but there's nothing showing up in your screenshots. It's possible that Google, Facebook or some other app is getting sync errors. Where you would check for that would depend on what OS you are running.
You could contact Pixel Support but my guess is that they would have you try a factory reset, which might be your best course of action based on the limited information you have provided.
My battery percentage currently shows 61% 1 day and 7 hours left, so you definitely have something wrong.
I would personally start with a factory reset. You could also run the phone in safe mode for a while and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't then the issue is likely a third party app.
When I had my battery issues, I factory reset and just ran stock for a couple days. It turned out I had to RMA it due to a bad battery. Phone was dying between 20-60%. I would barely get 1 hr SOT

Your screen was on for the majority of that time. And that 4 hours left means at the current rate you're going you'll only get another 4 hours. That is nothing more than an estimate and it will change all throughout the day based on you're use. Try letting you're battery drain all the way to zero 3 times. This should calibrate the battery. Try monitoring it after that.
And a side note. Use you're web browser for Facebook. The Facebook app has been a known battery destroyer forever.

I:m running Pure Nexus ROM with the Elemental kernel.
Thanks for all the responses everyone. I will try to drain my battery and see if that helps.
I had this problem. I went in and disabled all of my Google apps. I then went back and re updated them in the Play store After that I did a restart and I haven't had one since. I also recommend not having a battery case as both the Mophie and ZeroLemon both caused huge wakelocks for me. Cheers. ?
