How I've had really great battery life and decent performance on the One m9 - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I think I've found the best way to manage the heating/battery issues of the Snapdragon 810. I'm not sure if its my entire setup that's correcting all my issues or if its just the primary app.
My setup is Leedroid ROM with power saver on but only for display dimming and CPU managing. The important stuff: I am running the CPU Tuner app with a custom made profile running the On
demand governor at a 50/50 powersave bias (slider in app), and running only 4 cores out of 8. I believe this completely removes the high-power/performance cores from running. However, I do barely any gaming and performance for all other apps is very snappy and more than acceptable.
Just figured I'd share my thoughts and setup. My hands have yet to get uncomfortably warm like they usually do when doing multiple things in apps. Battery life is also MUCH better. If anything, you may use this setup temporarily until we get more kernels and developers working on fixing the issues with the snapdragon 810.

I don't have any issues with the snapdragon 810. I am still all stock unrooted and average just over 5 hours SOT. I don't use powersaver at all, not even when the battery falls below 15%. If battery life is that bad for you that you have to go to those extremes, then you probably have issues beyond the CPU.

I don't know how that's possible running stock, unless I have a bad unit or something. Then again I've tested some coworkers M9s, and theirs have issues the same as mine even though they're stock. I don't even have many apps installed, but my battery plummets just browsing the web or reddit, until I cripple the 810. Do you have any apps at all that help to preserve battery life? Or run exceptionally low screen brightness?

No, I do not use any apps to improve battery. I am on AT&T and at home I use a microcell and WiFi, so I do not get much battery drain from lack of having a good signal. I do not use exceptionally low screen brightness, but since high brightness does hurt my eyes, I do keep it around 33% and only raise it higher as needed. Overall, in comparison to other devices I have used and have or have had in the household, while not the best, I do find the M9 to have good battery life. And another good thing is, there is this update coming that improves battery life. Here is a current screenshot. Not half way through the battery and I already have 9 1/2 hours of life and just over 2 1/2 hours of SOT.

There's nothing wrong with your phone, the M9 hasn't got great battery life period, you can squeeze a lot out of it if you go to extreme lengths or if you don't hardly use your device, for example my last two phones which i just got rid of (Note 4 and an iPhone 6)
The Note 4 would last over 1 day comfortably as it was my main phone, the iPhone 6 however was simply a work phone, this bad boy lasted 4 days and 22 hours on a single charge, running IOS 8.1.3. I have a screen shot of it at home on my PC i'll upload later, the point i'm trying to make is, this is completely down to your Apps, your habits, your set up, rom you're using, mods installed etc.
All these combined make up the footprint of how long your battery lasts, no two people are the same, just as no two CPU's are the same, or for that matter the battery in your device, some may have a really good one, some might not, even your signal can have an adverse effect on the battery, especially if it's low and trying to get the signal out.
My advice for better battery life is to set up your phone the way you want it, start by cutting out the dead weight, remove and apps that start up at silly times (use autostarts for this) , check for wakelocks, reduce wireless activity, modify the CPU settings (like you have already) and then just use it as you would, anything else you can cut out,any other accounts that you really don't need, lose them, avoid task managers like the plague and remove apps like better battery stats once you've used them, use manual brightness, turn off ambient display, turn off hand gestures like double tap to wake
Beyond this there isn't much more you can do.

CHARGE CLARIFICATION - and also apps & extra battery [q]

Hi
The Nexus is my first smartphone (came from a Samsung FT480). I'm wondering how long I need to charge my phone for before I can unplug it - I don't want to semi-charge it or not charge it correctly, especially in the first few weeks.
I've only ever charged the phone once - it says in the 'settings>battery' section '100%-charging' but it has said this for the past 3 hours. My questions regarding battery charging:
- How many times should I let the phone die (battery depletes completely) before more regular charging?
- How long should I keep it on the charger (approximately) from a flat battery?
---
My question regarding apps is that I've seen in the Galaxy S2 you can rearrange the order apps are placed in the apps menu (not the customisable homescreen area, the other place you find the majority of your apps). Can you rearrange where apps are placed in this section if you know what I mean?
---
My final question is regarding battery spares. I have found a Samsung 1850mhz battery (original) and I was wondering if I purchased that would it fit the Nexus and provide beneficial increases to battery life? I've been told that it 'should' fit although is this a worthy investment/something to consider?
Please forgive my lack of technical terms or explanations as I have no idea how to get into these kinds of phones, still learning. Thanks in advance for your assistance
Regarding charging, batteries have improved quite a bit over the years. In my personal experience of owning different smart phones, doing multiple charging cycles doesn't really seem to make any noticeable difference to battery life in the long term. The only things I really make sure to do is charge to 100% on first use and drain as much as possible before charging again. I've been doing this for a few phones and they have been fine.
As for rearranging applications, this cannot be done in the stock android launcher, but can be done in launchers like adw.
As for the battery I think you mean 1850mAh. This is only a guess but I think if its the same physical battery size and the voltages are the same the higher the mAh (milliamp hours) number the longer it should last.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this reply. I'm not sure what to expect since my old FT480 (obviously not a smartphone) would last 3 to 8 days without a charge and it had a 1000mAh battery (relative to its screen size, operations etc it is fine). The Nexus loses 4% of battery life replying to 1 text message whilst on 2G mode. Its losing 10% of battery life per 3 minutes when connected to the 3G network. On standby I'm losing 4% every 20 minutes.
The phone seems amazing bar my battery issues. Thanks again,
4% replying to one text on 2G, losing 10% of battery PER minute on 3G and on standby 4% every 20 minutes without any background apps on?
Sounds like that current battery tech isn't keeping up with hardware. This isn't news.
Does anyone know is this is the average for the Nexus? Does anyone know about a 1850mAh battery and how much more beneficial it will be over the 1750 standard?

this seems very abnormal even in the beginning...
turning sync OFF (manual) helps alot.
also, turning wifi/bluetooth OFF would seem to help as it won't transmit to try and connect.
finally, brightness of the screen affects battery. maybe try to keep it at a non-max level (if that is what it is at) that is suitable for you.

I have the brightness set at about 40% with syncing/etc all turned off. My brother has a Galaxy S2 and uses it just to check text messages/make calls (no data plan, hardly ever connects to 3G) and his lasts 9 days on a single charge.
On the S2 you can actually get into detailed network info and check/uncheck 3G and all of that - how do you do that on ICS? I can only find the option to use 2G.
Extra Info: At the top left of my screen there is a logo (this specifically) -

What does this mean exactly?

Battery life + great battery monitoring application

I just got my Glide a few days ago. From the specs of the phone and reviews online I was expecting the battery to last very long, but that hasn't been my experience.
My battery was going down about 10% every hour which means I would barely make it through a work day without charging it again.
I found a great app called Battery Mix that tracks battery usage and estimates how long the battery is going to last. It shows a number called P/H (percent per hour) which tells you how many percent per hour the battery is going down (or up if you're charging). You can find the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.smapho.battery_mix
When I first installed the app I was getting about 12.5 P/H which means the phone will only last 8 hours. I then uninstalled a few apps that use battery, but that didn't help much. Somebody said their battery improved when they formatted their SD card, so I just removed the SD card from mine. Now my battery consumption is down to about 8 P/H. The best I've seen is 7 P/H. This is better but still would only get me 12 hours and I'm not running all the apps I would like to be running.
I have JuiceDefender running now on the balanced setting. I'm running the Osimood ROM with Android 2.3.5. I've removed all background network polling apps like Facebook. Android OS is using 56% of the battery followed by display at 15%, so there isn't anything else that's eating up my battery.
How is the battery life on your Glide? Could you please install this app so we can compare numbers?
Woah, 56% battery life for the Android OS?
On daily usage it barely gets above 20%. The screen takes most battery life.

Thanks for the info.
Mine has been sitting on standby most of the day so that's probably why display is so much lower on mine than yours.
The high percentage of Android OS doesn't really worry me. It doesn't mean it's using a lot of battery; it just means it's using most of whatever is being used which could be a small amount.
Mine is doing much better now. P/H is down to 4.3 which means it could last 23 hours.
I really think the problem was the SD card. I'll pick up a different one after work today and see if it works better. I need a bigger one anyway.
I also found a thread that talks about corrupt image or video files on your phone causing bad battery life. That could definitely be what I'm experiencing. Should be fun figuring out which image is causing the problem.
what about downclocikng your cpu to 800? it will help i belive.
OK just installed it. I will let you know how mine is doing in a few days. I am fully Rogers stock.
I replaced the SD card and it seems to be doing better now. There may have been images on that card contributing to the problem.
I actually had GPS, wi-fi and bluetooth on the whole time. I've turned them all off now.
I've also underclocked it to 800. Thanks, taiber2000.
It looks like for the last hour it only dropped 3 percentage points.
If you are rooted and have ClockworkMod installed, you can sometimes get better battery life by resetting your battery stats. I think there are even some apps for rooted phones that will do it, but I don't have any experience with them. I can say, however, that resetting my battery stats using CWM increased my battery life significantly.
See here for one guide on how to do it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/bugless/111009-get-better-battery-life-reset-battery-stats.html
sjbotha your welcome.
i belive i will do the same when i'll get my phone as well. altugh i will install the OC rooted kernel for better overall performance i will still downclock via software, not need the extra sterngh for my uses and i better have longer use time then CPU power.
I get 4.9 but the other day I was getting 12. All I did was Reboot my phone and I haven't started many apps. I think when they start they stay in memory.

Mine depends on usage:
-about whole day wifi-on with 3 hours games and calls; if battery is 100% at 6am, it will be 20-30% at 10pm
-whole day HSPA+ on, 2 hours phone calls + SMS/MMS, emails etc; if battery is 100 at 6am, it will be 50-60% at 11pm or before I sleep...
in terms of P/H:
-i get 3-5 P/H when wi-fi, Auto-Sync is on.
-i get 2-4 P/H on HSPA + Auto-Sync on.
-about 1-2 P/H or sometimes a straight line on Battery Stats when Idle, no data connection and/or auto-sync is on.
in other words, the glide can handle my needs in a whole day without completely draining it's battery.

Personally, I use it just for the fact that it can help me save on my data. Decreasing the number of updates automatically as well as controlling my Wifi is really convenient. It's kind of like the functions of tasker with a battery management function.
have not heard of this, thanks for the heads up. will give it a go!
Going to give it a shot. Any thought on whether to turn off the power save mode while its "learning" my phone? I usually have it enabled.

This looks neat, I wonder if this or Juice Defender would be a better overall app. ( I have never tried Juice Defender though)
Since this app is free, I will give this a go and try it out, I shall post a follow up review soon after a week.
Honestly it's not a bad app. It's not by any means a resource hog, and it serves it purpose. I haven't noticed a tremendous gain in battery life vs. not using it, but every little bit helps. YMMV of course. I'm personally not a fan of Juice Defender, but to each their own.

honestly neither have I, i had it on my OG EVO, and it seemed that it did more harm than good. I felt as if Juice Defender Ultimate was using more battery than it was saving, but i would be willing to give anything a shot if it helps
I don't know if they have fixed it but it would always turn on my wifi when I didn't want it to and actually drained my battery a bit more... But that was a while ago..... Any still notice this?
I turn off the WiFi control as I use it with llama.
all in all it works well for me. seems to save some battery, I'm happy with it.
It stops my whatsapp and facebook messenger from syncing, even if I allow these apps to sync whenever they want to. I did not notice any reasonable gain in battery life, so I removed it.
At the end of the day, I don't really care if I have 26 or 21 percent left...

Considering it was last updated like a year and a half ago, it's still a decent app but I am not a fan either...only have Tasker switch it on at night to reduce sync when I'm asleep.

Battery Impression thread.

Hi fellas..
I thought we needed one of these threads to get a clear image of how the phone performs IRL.
We all heard rather varying reports from the reviews, some good, other disastrous...
Here are the points to be considered while posting.
1. Please post your impressions of the battery here.
2. Please be specific about how you've used it during the day.
3. Screenshots of the battery settings are most welcome.
4. Show image of screen-on time as well as the list of apps
5. Brightness, is it auto? custom? If custom, %?
5. 3g / WiFi on? If yes for how long?
7. Haptic feedback?
8. Please share the details like which ROM,Kernel, MODs. :good:

Thank you!
I would also love to see how the battery performs. This is one of the main attractions for me. I understand that the screen is absolutely massive, but If I can get a full day of use out of it without needing a 4:00pm re-charge (my iPhone 4s) than I would be eternally grateful. I can't stand having a dead phone merely 8 hours after I charged it. Some days it`s dead by 2-3
I can't recall any reviews saying anything negative about the N1's battery?
Regardless, great idea for a thread -
I have been very curious how much the 'gestures while screen is off' affects battery life, in particular.

The battery on this thing is a beast. It isn't perfect, and I'm sure it could be improved somewhat, but it dominates everything else at the moment.

I think this is the best thing I've heard all month. Finally a great battery in a great phone! I would sacrifice a bit of CPU speed for battery life any day.
Does seem very decent!
Can't post any specifics right now, but the battery does seem very, very good!
I've had the OPPO Finder (x907) which was a cool device but even with even very minimal use could barely make it through the day.
I'm using the OPPO Find 5 (x909) which has decent battery life for a light-medium user, but would displease most users and all power-users.
With the OPPO N1, I'm still evaluating it's battery life but so far it's ridiculously better than the OPPO Find 5. Perhaps with the CM11 rom this will improve even more. Another cool thing, because the screen is so big...you can turn the brightness way down and the screen is still extremely readable.

Great to hear that there is a large improvement over the find 5. "Return to innovation", as they say . And I never would have thought that the screen would be easier to read when dimmed due to the large display. It makes sense due to the fact that the letters are displayed large enough to still make out clearly while the screen is dimmed. Neat!
Regarding the brightness, could you perhaps take a day to operate and monitor the N1 while on low brightness? I'm curious to see how much better the battery performs while in a dimmed state. To see if it makes a noticeable difference.
N1 Owner
i used OPPO Find 5 as a daily driver it was doing ok, but once i got N1 it amazed me with it's battery life, sometimes i can use it for two days
or one day for full heavy use, which means around 4-6Hrs screen on, with Wifi and playing games (candy crush sometimes for 2-3 Hours) and it still got some battery life.
I really recommend it.
Anyone else using the snapdragon battery guru app? I have to wait another 3 days for the battery savings to start. I was using it for half a day yesterday but I was forced to reinstall when I tried to install some see-through CM theme that messed up the themer. So beware of that.
I can actually play games for hours at a time on this phone. Whereas on my other phones the heat and battery drainage prevented me from doing so.

Good Battery Life
Battery life is pretty good for heavy users too. I won't say its the best, I think Note 2 was better on TouchWiz, but its not bad by any yardstick. If you are worried about battery life, keep that aside in case of N1 while using ColorOS. I can't speak for CM or Omni atm.
Battery life is pretty good.. Depending on the OS I use. WIth CM10.2 which it came with I am usually able to get about a full days worth of battery life with around 40-50% left. Obviously depends what I do with it during the day. Most of the time I surf 9gag, read emails, chat. The usual. I occasionally use Plex to stream media from home which drains the battery more.
I noticed when I used ColorOS though, the battery life was severely diminished. I use the program Battery Widget Reborn which gives me a rough idea of how much battery life is remaining. on CM10.2 it would report a full charge can usually last at least 1 and a half days to 2. But in ColorOS, the program reports that on a full charge I can only use the battery for 23 hours. In reality, I normally find myself at around 20-30% when I go to bed. (the phone is generally unplugged at around 8am when I head for work and replugged to the charger at around midnight.)
Both were pretty much configured the same with 3-4 widgets on the home screen with nova launcher and Zedge changes my wallpaper every hour. I read emails often and do chatting occasionally. and surf 9gag often.
I would be disappointed if the N1's massive 3610 mAh battery couldn't compete against the other flagship phones especially when the other phones all use the more battery consuming LTE radio vs Oppo N1's HSPA+ only radio chip.
About battery life - my statistics...
I have just played with my brand new toy, so it is not a normal use for me...

my personal review about its battery is actually
depend upon its battery capacity....
for example. We've found here,
the non-famous brand with a power of 1500mAh,
it seems a little,
but if we compared towards its performance with its high usage,
it is still fine.

Heavy use endurance

Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S7's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
22h straight? How is this even possible? was the phone plugged in?
This phone idle drains almost as much battery when in use, if you are a heavy use, this is not a bad phone for you.
Coming from the Droid maxx I find the battery to be underwhelming. The only saving grace is the quick charge. Love the device hardware but battery sucks.

mine starts to heat in less than 5 min as soon as i activate the wifi
It gets hotter than Galaxy S5. Gets very hot when doing continous web browsing. Gets overheat warning when playing VR for 30 mins.
The game's name is Lands End
Mine doesn't get hot at all but I am not gaming. About the hottest it gets when updating Android. And I live in a very hot and humid climate so I am very satisfied.

Can you download CPU-Z and tell us the battery temperature when you are on Chrome for more than 10 minutes and when you are charging the phone ? Mine gets warm after using it a bit and hot when charging.
I don't browse much on the phone. It's just annoying. Also, I have been using USB charging from a desktop which is horribly slow but also doesn't heat up the battery which is good. Like I said the only time I notice it getting hot is on a long Android update. When I update all apps and have like 20 or 30 apps to be updated it gets warm but not hot. And the ambient temp here is around 90-95F right now in my living room. Right now on phone info it shows 33C CPU and 33.3C battery. I don't use cpuz because of the ads. I thought cpux had temps but i can't find them now.
Oh it does get hot with the wall charger! I have been using usb charging and it takes over three hours to go from 40% or so to full but the phone stays cool. The wall charger is much faster but it really heats up the phone. I guess what you are seeing is normal. Try usb charging if you don't need to get the battery full in a hurry.
Using this phone while playing Pokemon Go gets me about 4-1/2 hours until i need to recharge. I usually use my Samsung Charging pad to recharge my phone. just sit it down and leave it.
low endurance, i using phone every day, instagram facebook and other soc. media and i have to charge phone twice a day :/
i heavily modified my s7 software (Google Play Services replaced with microG, Xposed installed, Magisk installed, Amplify, Greenify, Better Battery Saver, Disable-Service, PowerNap, AFWall+, AdAway, AppOps, etc), and i get very very good battery, 6 hours SOT minimum with heavy LTE usage on whatsapp, facebook, instagram, etc. But yeah, in stock bloated rom, battery sucks.

Does your s7 have the exynos processor or snapdragon? if it's snapdragon, can you tell me what other apps you used to get such awesome battery life, or what guides you used that led you to the use of such apps? I can barely crack 4 hours SOT with mainly Firefox, Youtube use, and some facebook/whatsapp. On top of that, when I rooted my s7 and tried using greenify+amplify+forcedoze my battery life was VERY BAD compared to stock and full bloat.
I purchased this phone on 12/21 from Best Buy. I am coming from an unlocked Moto Z Play with which I was averaging 10 hours of screen time. Greatness and benchmark every OEM should consider. The apps on the S7 are the same as I had on the Moto. Today is my first day of a full charge and I have actually used it less than I typically would the Moto Z Play. I would try to kill the battery on the Moto purposely. That thing just kept going. Underwhelming battery life is about right for the S7 but I knew coming in that there would be absolutely no comparison.
Why did I switch? This phone game is one of give and take. I would take the Moto Z Play with that Snapdragon 625, insane battery life, 10x better finger scanner and the software experience over the S7 any day. There was one thing that I could not deal with on the Moto and this is where the S7 shines. The camera on the Moto is horrendous.
I have a nice shooter but I don't lug it everywhere I go. More times than not I want to take a picture with my phone where you just wouldn't carry a camera.
So, as of this post I am on target for about 4 hours of SOT on the S7 which falls short of what I am used to (Moto Z Play, 10 hours and about 8 on the iPhone 6 Plus that I just sold).
Give and take. Return this S7 and go back to the Moto Z Play but deal with a camera that sucks but IMHO excels over the S7 in every other aspect?

It would be useful to state whether you own the Exynos or the Snapdragon* version I have the Exynos, it doesn't get hot, not even when charging. 6 hours game time.

It's Exynos! i think 4hs SOT with Qualcomm it's ok since it is less efficient (At least on our phone). I can't tell about battery drain on root because the root method of your version is different, so maybe it's a kernel issue (no deep sleeping or something like that or a bad CPU governor keeping the cores at high frecuency).
Just installed BTU firmware on my 930FD. Doing reasonably well. Display resolution set to 1080p, getting about 30m more SOT than MM.
