[Q] Quick access to LP dialer - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the stock dialer, it requires more steps to get to one's contact list or dialer pad (for T9 dialing)
Has anyone found a good way to open the dialpad directly from a homescreen shortcut, or access favorite contacts directly?

thanks - I have GB and the option checked, but it doesn't do anything for me
tried using secure settings to access all the child activities under the phone app as parent, but none of those worked either
the multiple steps just to make a phone call is frustrating ... guess as time goes by, devs start to forget that the smartphone is actually meant to be used as a phone (too)!

Go to your call log and press menu > view by.
I know it can get messy sometimes with text messages showing up in the log.
For some strange reason you can't filter it do all calls though.
I tried looking for a better app than stock phone, couldn't find one that hasn't irritating bugs/features... it would be really great if grouping was applied in call log...
There is an alternate dialer called easy dial pro from ISOL which looks like it can do the job, but it force closes on my phone when I start it. Give that a try.

Dial by name?

How do you enable dialing contacts by spelling out their name on the dial pad? This was my most heavily used feature on my TB. I'm hoping I don't have to flash a custom rom just for this! .. thx!
I know I'm using the exDialer which supports both speed dial (long press a single number) and the dial by name feature. Both of which are lacking from the stock dialer.
I'm also using exDialer and I like it a lot. Way better than the stock dialer.
After you bring up the dialer hit the search button bottom right.

Yes that feature sux as it requires 5+ clicks as opposed to dialing it directly....
honestly there are tons of features that are just missing from this phone that I used all the time on my TB...
like a global search button (?!? wtf google) I never use the google search bar... and I wish I could reverse the home / back buttons...and remove altogether the recent apps button (I never use that either).... i guess my only option is a custom rom? any good ones out there that allow this? Or do I have to replace the launcher? I'd rather not do that tho bc i dont want any lag..... thx!
I use exdialer as well. If you're on a custom rom, there's a cm9 dialer that adds this functionality, but it doesn't work on stock roms.
Use the microphone icon on the google search bar on the homepage. "Call Dave on mobile". Works fine for me.

Yea I'm sure it works but I'd rather not announce who im calling to the whole room sometimes... dial by voice has its benefits but its just not for me I guess..

Oh sweet... thanks!
This was actually something that I thought would be included in ICS stock dialer. Really surprised Google hasn't figured this one out yet. Oh well.
As many others have already stated, exDialer is a free app available on the market that satisfies all your smart-dialing needs. There's even a free ICS theme available as well. I truly love this dialer in comparison to the stock ICS dialer, which was lacking so much - which I noticed right away when I got my GNex. All is well now though with exDialer installed.
Texting as well?
A little off topic but today I transferred all my contacts from my Evo3d to my Nexus. This evening I tried to send a text message and thought I could just type the contact's name into the To: field and have the phone pick it up from my contacts list. It didn't happen. Am I missing something?
thx ill check it out
one weird thing that i've noticed is the avatars for my friends in the contact list is super low resolution for some reason... its the contacts that have facebook "linked" to each contact - any idea how to fix this? It should be showing the full resolution of the image not a 120x120 pixelated image.....
also how to search the contact list for duplicates? HTC does this automatically and suggests that contacts be "linked"..... but on the GN, you have to do it contact by contact which is a PITA when you have 400+ contacts..... ideas? Thx everyone for the help!

switch to go sms pro - its much better than the stock app! be sure to disable the notifications of the stock sms app after u install it.
Pure Android Nexus & AOSP Roms don't include the feature the OP is looking for.
Just to answer the OP's question, pure Google Android Nexus phones have never included the feature you are looking for, same goes for most AOSP roms. CM doesn't include it either.
Seems silly, I don't know why, I always dial people by putting in the first few letters of their name also and the number pops up. Wish the pure Nexus line included that.

The apk was taken straight from the Nexus 5, and has the search feature actually working! (confirmed)

FAQ from the website
I installed the app but the icon doesn't show up in my app tray. What can I do?
If this happens on your phone, the only solution we found was to use Nova Launcher because it has a feature that allows you to run a specific activity within an app. To set this up:
Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.Choose "Shortcuts"Select "Activities"Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
This will put a shortcut to the dialer on your home screen. At this stage, you can use this to access Google Dialer. It's not the cleanest solution, but it does work.
Can I disable my default dialer?
The short answer is no. As a general rule, you will need to keep your present dialer enabled in order to receive calls. The long answer is that on some phones you might be able to disable your stock dialer, but on others you definitely cannot. Feel free to try it on your own device and let us know what your results are.
(I disabled the first phone apk of the 2 that show up (flashing adds another one and I had it A-Z order))
EDIT: After disabling the APK, when I select "Call" the phone doesn't show any call screen whatsoever, and still has a call going, (mic works, and you can call, but the only way you can hang up is to leave the app and click the extended notification)
Again, this is all them!

My Zopper companion app (ZW Utilities) supports enable/disable toggles for Wifi, Data, Bluetooth and Flashlight, if that's what you are looking for. If you just want to open the Settings page for Wifi, you should be able to do that by opening the OnTap action dialog, swipe two times to the right to the "Shortcuts" page, scroll down until you see the "Settings shortcut" option. Tap that and you can select the settings sub page you want to open with a tap on the Zooper module.
Hope this helps you out and happy theming
what i wanted to do is just a simple task, like when i tap on that particular object it opens the WIFI settings, im sorry but i really cant find "Settings shortcut" im using galaxy s5

You COULD use Tasker to get the job done. You can literally hard code it to toggle on/off Wifi. Then, when you're done configuring Tasker, hop over to your Zooper widget and just point it to the Tasker profile you just made. Should allow you to toggle when you click on whatever object you place in Zooper. You can also do the same for data toggles, images, etc.
EDIT: I actually forgot that they integrated this. Configure your rectangle then click Module OnTap, scroll two screens over to the right, click "Settings Shortcut" and then chose Wi-Fi. Then back out to your widget, let it update and then click on the rectangle. It SHOULD take you to your Wi-Fi settings page. Hope this helps. :0)

Looks like we may have a solution: http://www.jagwar.de/en/zooper-wifi-toggle/
hi thanks for your research i really do appreciate that however base on my understanding it just creates a toggle where it enable / disable the wifi, what i was trying to do is open a wifi settings.. im not sure if i can do that with tasker.. im really terrible at programming
i will do my own research too, again i appreciate your time
thanks a lot
Oh, I see. Let me continue poking around and see what I can come up with. Unfortunately for you, I don't think it can be done on your phone, seeing as you're missing a vital element to make it work...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using XDA Free mobile app
yeah its such a shame that a new flagship that is supposed to be more powerful doesnt have this feature.. oh well i hope i can find a work around.
thanks a lot
To use Tasker:
Create a new task;
Enter a name for the task then click the check mark;
From the task edit page click the + at the bottom;
From the select action category list click settings;
Scroll to the bottom of the list then click WIFI settings;
You don't need to make any changes in the action edit page so go back to the task edit page;
Since your going to use the task as a shortcut you need to assign it an icon so click the icon on the bottom right corner (it looks like an app drawer icon);
Select an icon (it doesn't really matter which icon because for your purposes the icon will not display);
Then use the back button to completely back out of Tasker (this will automatically save the task).
From there just setup up your widget to launch a shortcut the task you just created.

Hey there, although your request can be managed by Tasker, I feel like you want a quicker/easier alternative. Coding can wait another day.
Download this app from the play store link then enter the OnTap property of your chosen Zooper widget module > Swipe once to the right > Select Wifi Settings from the apps list.
And you're done. Just tap on the module after a minute to let it refresh and you're set.
The free app is under 18kb so hardly resource intensive and more than makes up for the surprising lack of Settings shortcuts on your S5. (Seriously, my Note 2 has these basic shortcuts as does most stock/custom roms. I wonder why it didn't make it to the S5).
I have been equally frustrated by a similar situation. I want a widget that automatically takes me to the battery status.
I had built one before but was being thwarted by the lack of access to this setting. I thought I was crazy in not finding the settings be available. I dont really need a toggle for the wifi, but is there a suggestion for the battery settings?
i suppose I will play around with Tasker to see if I can figure something out, now that I know I am not crazy.
i may have found a quicker solution via a third party...
- install 'anycut' from the play store (icon ooks like a mushroom house)
- when setting up the 'on tap' part, point to 'any cut' under 'shortcuts' and let your mind be blown by the myriad of shortcuts provided, including the elusive wi-fi settings
enjoy

Default Phone Dialer

Would someone with the US version look at the version number of the default phone app and tell me what it is. For some odd reason I don't have it on my phone so I installed version 3.0.20.25 from apkmirror and I just want to check if that's the latest version. I said US version because I don't know if the version numbers change according to country. I only discovered this when I was trying to test the sensors and the access codes wouldn't work with the Google dialer. I also don't have a clue as to why it wasn't installed on my phone.
Thanks

That's what I figured but there was no option in my contacts app to access the dialer. If I didn't dial a contact, there was no other option...weird. I was trying to avoid a reset just for that so that's why I went to apkmirror. I'm pretty sure contacts had the dial option when I got the phone and I did install the Google dialer because I like it more but I can't see why that would affect the Contacts dialer. BTW, I did uninstall the Google dialer to check if that was disabling it somehow.
EDIT: What version of Contacts do you have? This is turning into one big mystery that has me puzzled.

Mine is 3.8.20.11
The dialer part is just a small hovering circle icon with the number pad image on it at the lower right side of each part of the contacts app
You just press that and the dialler slides up, there is no actual dedicated tab for it
My guess is that the contacts app was no longer set as default for dialler because of the Google one

Yea since Oreo you can no longer manually update system apps
There are 3 "phone" apps too if you enable "Show system apps" in Settings > Apps, one is the contacts app for some reason now called phone, and the other two are probably needed for the dialler I would assume

The app version will differ with different firmware, I'm guessing yours is a snapdragon, mine is the Exynos with O2U CSC firmware
Might be able to fix it by just flashing the same firmware over the top though, no data loss and "should" repair system files
