[Q] Battery Jumps from 42% to 100% while charging - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My battery jumps from 42% to 100% while charging.
When i had first noticed this problem my battery used to jump from 75% to 100%.
but after trying numerous ways to calibrate the battery , everything resulted badly and now it jumps from 42% to 100%.
Please share your experience regarding such an issue and if u have figured out a way to fix this.

so many people facing that problem, we still don't know what cause it, is it software problem or hardware problem, but in my country (Indonesia) someone from Indonesian asus forum facing that problem and he brought his phone to ASUS service centre, he waited for about 1 week, and after he got his phone back asus had changed the motherboard and the battery, so I think battery jump is caused by hardware problem.... cmiiw

How long does it take for battery to jump from 42% to 100%? The 2.3GHz plus 4G ram (ZE551ML)" is bundled with 18W adapter which has quick charge. Please see the following link regarding quick charge: http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011185

I had the same problem with an lg G2. If it jumps that much in a couple of seconds then it is really hardware, can be the charger but most of the time its the battery and internal power supply. You just had a bad luck, it can happen anytime to anyphone, Asus have excellent support. Contact them by phone.
p.s: Nice to see Asus staffs posting on xda.

from 0 to 42% it takes around 1 hour after that It jumps instantaneously. to 100%
Yeah i use 18W adapter.
I get battery backup of around 3-4 hours only.

My problem is different my problem is fast charging no working takes ages to charge says 2 odd hour charge or 1 hour 52 and it still takes ages plugged it in 2day 2 charge it said 7 hour I thought wtf anyone know how to help please

I cannot be 100% sure as it never happened to me with this phone but with my old g2 cellphone , it was hardware and I had to replace it. Your best bet is to call Asus by phone.
@kumarsaurav11, 0 to 42% should take much less than 1h. It should be 0 to 60% in ~38 min with that 18w charger. Same advice here.

Mine goes from 40 to 0, 3rd time in a row, brand new, just received it this morning, ZE550ML, if problem persists by the end of the week, I'll be returning it first thing this monday and getting a Mi 4i instead.

Mine is jumping from 78 to 100..
It charges to 60 like at quick charge and then after that it gets super slow..like takes hour+ to get to 78 or so..is purely software related cux in getting around 5-6 hours of sot similar to any user with no jump problem..hope it fixes tho
Plus its happening to half of the users that cant be all hw related..

We are mostly running 2.19.40.22. Never had it with my zenfone 2 4gb ZE551ML, I don't know about the 550.
Yes, quick charge is programmed to only charge up to 60% 18w 9v 2a, then it will charge at a lower than other phones speed at 7w 5v 1.35a, specs are printed on battery heatsink. Charging is 2x slower after 60%. It could be for safety as quick charge will heat the phone fast.

I know but it cant be a hardware problem if all of sudden after v2.19 ALOT people start complaining about battery jump issue..im on 551 tho..

To really know if its hardware, reboot in recovery, clear data&cache, then flash the original firmware from asus website. Start with earliest firmware and try to pinpoint with which one does this issue occure or not.

Does anyone know if cyanogen mod fixed this issue?

This is most likely hardware as I stated earlier. Did it happend to you in Stock?

Just arrived my zenfone 2 from assistence, with a document says:
Fault found: Battery error
Article: SW Update
Testing now and i found that the battery now jump from 78 to 100 instead of 66 to 100.

I had this problem too, battery jumps from 70% to 100%, so i did a calibration and now the battery is perfect (I got double autonomy also).
For calibration:
1) Discharge the battery under 10%
2) Switch off the mobile and charge it 2 hours more from a full charge
3) Unplug the cable for 10 seconds, then plugin again and charge the mobile for a few minutes
4) Switch on the mobile with the cable plugin and when the android system is fully loaded, unplug the cable
All of this for 3 times

so many variables, kernels and all that. try calibrating, full charge and resetting batt stats if you didn't already.

I am having the same issue, and from what I have been told, you MIGHT need an external battery charger to get the battery to FULLY charge. Something with the Evo stops the extended batteries from fully charging to their capacity.
There are many of us who believe that the algorithm used to determine battery charge capacity is flawed. When the 3500 mah battery is truly filled to capacity, battery life is amazing. I go through a routine to get my Seido 3500 to completely charge. Place the battery monitor widget on your main homescreen (it is free to download from the market) I charge it until the LED turns green or until the battery monitor widget alerts me audibly. Yes, it can be set to emit an audible alert when the battery reaches 100%. Afterwards, I unplug and wait 60 seconds. If after 60 seconds the battery monitor widget displays less than 100%, I resume charging. I repeat that process until after 60 seconds the widget still displays 100%. Once that happens, I can easily get over 24 hours of use from my battery. My routine is somewhat tedious, but it is effective. Like others have stated, a dedicated charger for the Seido may work better. Anyway, I use this same routine with the stock battery. I hope I was helpful to you.

I think I will give your method a try and see if that will work for me. I get approx. 5-6hrs on what shows a full charge on my 3500ma battery at this point.
I charge my battery til light is green, then leave it on for ~2 hrs. Look at the waveform on bmw. You'll notice after the charge level reaches 100%, the mA waveform looks like a saw tooth waveform. Initially it will be a high frequency pattern, then it will begin to slow down... Once it reaches this slow down state, that's when I consider my phone charged.
Here's a visual of what I was referring to above. The phone's on the charger the whole time, unused (idling), screen off.
mA on top, % on bottom.

Same graph, mA on top, mV on bottom
to add another method to the mix it's similar, not trying to knock on any of the others mentioned at all
I found that the most accurate way to utilize the BMW for a full charge is reading the mA's..
..after either placing widget on home screen or activating >menu>settings>monitoring preferences>monitor without widget>history update rate>60sec..
..then after light turns green check mA's in history it will be positive mA until it goes from triple digits to double then single when it reaches zero its at capacity/full then it will stop charging and start to go into negative mA. unless its a sbc kernel it should keep bumping a single digit mA if nothing is keeping it awake..
..unplug at zero and it will stay at 100% for a long time on a extended battery. best I got was 10 hours (at100%) with minimal use and 5 with moderate on a 2400mAH.

I, too, watch the mA using the battery monitor widget (bmw) and many of us used to charge the battery and wait until the mA dropped to 0. The problem is that many of us could never get to 0 or by the time it got to 0 the phone had been charging for about 8 hours...of course I'm being overly dramatic here...lol...The point is this: when the phone's LED initially illuminates indicating a full charge, chances are it is not full and you will have to employ some additional charging methods to truly get a completely charged battery. Several methods have been offered here. Pick one or try them all and then decide which one is acceptable to your tastes and patience level. Take care.

@madflasher, your battery history log is indicative of a SBC kernel. Is that what you are using?
A non sbc kernel has a bump type strategy, while sbc is trickle.

gpz! you are correct. nice catch! My bad I should have stated that...to go along with what works for others this is what worked for me but like I said, was just adding another method to the mix...I know the debate on sbc can get pretty heated...there's so many variables when it comes to battery life

Idle battery drain

I've been noticing my battery drain about 3% on idle after taking it off charge. It's really annoying as 3% to me is too much. I've attached the battery screens to this post below.

Device Idle is responsible for 1.32% drainage from your battery. No problem here. If I'm misunderstanding, please rephrase.

Actually This is what I was referring to, when using the phone the battery drains nice and slow. better than I would expect to drain during screen on time. But when I take it off charger at 6 am and leave it in place and come back at 11 or 12 am I lose about 10% which shouldn't be normal imo. See below:

what can I do to fix this? Its annoying. And no this shouldn't be normal, I like everything about the stock rom and wouldn't like to root just for the hell of it. But this actually has me thinking, (still leaning towards no as I still get thru the day) but would like to get if fixed non the less.
I noticed the same thing. When i unplug it in the morning it drains faster. But when im waiting for the fully charged notification to pop up then unplug it lasts longer. Its strange, maybe has something to do with charger. Do they have "safe mode" after fully charged to prevent overcharging or something?

I always wait for the battery fully charged unplug charger notification to pop up before unplugging. So that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Faster drain is normal from 100% to 90%. It was explained to me that when you leave the phone on the charger overnight it charges to 100% and then allows it to drain some, then starts recharging again. You may really be at 95% when you pull it off the charger despite what the phone is showing.
First, get Better Battery Stats. It can help you figure out whether something is eating your battery abnormally.

Also, I highly recommend GSam Battery Monitor It might be a little easier to understand than BBS, but I like and use both.

BBS should be the best app to find out which process is your problem.
This phone gets hot randomly, guess it was just humid in your car. I feel like all this battery talk is useless android has never been good with battery life. This phone is huge and powerful so battery drain is going to happen. Also depends how long you had battery, how much you over charge battery. I read in several places that after 3 to 5 months of use batteries tend to drain faster.
Your best bet if it's such a big issue is getting another battery with a separate charger. Honestly in this day and age these smartphones should come with an extra battery lol

My battery and phone are both less than a month old, as for humidity that doesn't drain a battery from 50-0% on idle in a few hours. Also I've posted new screenies, messaging used ~20% without being used and stats showing 0s awake. maps did something similar despite disabling all location services and unticking all boxes in the gps submenu. My issue isn't bad battery life, its idle battery life. I shouldn't lose 2% per hour or more when I unplug and go back to sleep.

I'm troubleshooting for my girlfriend's Note 2. She's complained about a slow charge since last week. I checked her phone and installed Battery Widget Reborn to see how long it calculated the charging time. After a while, it says that it gains 1% of battery life for every 11mins plugged in. Which means it's about 11hrs charging time. Can anyone help? She's using the Note II with the latest update. Also this is an open phone... no tie ins to any network.

Find the "galaxy charging current" app here in the forums. It will show you if you're getting a decent charge through your cable.
Also, the perseus kernel (for tw-based roms only) allows you to adjust the current levels for different connections; other kernels may, but I don't know for sure.

I had the same issue with My Note 2.
The issue is with Samsung's stock cable.
Every micro USB cable doesn't work fine with note 2.
I have tried connecting a variety of cables.
Nokia CA 101 and Sony Ericsson EC600R works perfectly fine.
Again..
If you're on TouchWiz ROM,
1. Install Perseus Kernel
2. Go to Stweaks
3. Power
4. Ignore unstable power
5. Apply
If AOSP ROM,
1. Install n.e.a.k kernel 2.1
2. Install their app from play store
3. Go to charge current (or something like that)
4. Hit ignore unstable power
5. Set on boot
In this way you'll get the fastest charging..
My phone used to charge at 600 now it charge at 1800.. In 2 hours (or less), its full..

its the cable
i have a sph-l900 and i have long puzzled over why my stock charger initially showed me 1800 and as time went on it became erratic and started giving me lower and lower currents as shown in the app "galaxy charging current"
i sifted the forums and came upon a post that mentioned there is chip, forgot the model number, inside that keeps lowering the current draw until the voltage stabilizes above some preset limit.
I reasoned that the thicker the gauge of wire, the less resistance per unit length that wire would have. It then follows that given some current i, the thinner the gauge, the greater the voltage drop over a given distance. Also the smaller the drop in voltage for a shorter wire at any given gauge.
so what does that mean? you want a short thick gauge usb cable.
Some posts mentioned alternative cables like the mediabridge, rocketfish, and nokia cables as giving the full current. Those cables are either heavier gauge or short or both. So, i set about looking to test my theory. I figured why pay 8 to 20 bucks when i could just hopefully find a cable that fit the bill at monoprice. It just had to be a cable with heavier gauge wire on the power pins. The note 2 cares not if the data pins are shorted since the supplied cable works fine as both charge and sync.
So i ordered two pairs of cables at both 1.5 ft and 3 ft. ( Its the white ones with the ferrite chokes). I ordered two pairs because if it worked i wanted extras.
I got the cables and i first tried on my 2 amp car charger that never gave me more than 1300 on a good day with the stock cable.. To my surprise the monoprice cable immediately gave me 1800. Same with all my stock note 2 chargers. I've only tested the 1.5ft so far but i'm so happy i don't care whether the 3 ft works. the phone charges quickly and the micro usb plug is nice and snug.. only caveat is the head of the plug is a little big so you might have to shave it a little with dremel if you are using a commuter case like me.

I have NOTE II N7100, international version.
running red pill kernel and pheonix rom for about a year.
had no problems what so ever but for the past 2 days, i am observing that the battery charging is very very slow.
Takes about 9 to 10 hrs to charge completely.
DOWNLOADED Galaxy Charging app and found out these results:
REFERENCE :1690mA
Maximum: 400mA
Average:400mA
Do i have to change the cable?
I tried with a different cable, it delivers 900mA( it was of micromax)
Helpppp!!!!
use belkin charger
use any high power adaptor for chargin or change data cabloe

Battery from 100% to 99% almost immediately after disconnecting from charge

Hello,
Was wondering if someone has had the same experience with their note 10+.
I got my device on the 22nd of Aug and since day 1 the battery has always been showing 99% almost immediately after disconnecting from the charger.
But after that, it discharges normally. Have had no issues with SOT as well.
This wasnt the case with my note 8 and note 9. They used to stay on 100% for a while after disconnecting from the charger.
But was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience with their Note 10+.
Thank you.

yes. after disconnecting the external power charger (or generally changing some working conditions i.e. the type of network connection) a lot of applications receive broadcast messages and wake up their services increasing the cpu activity and battery juice. then they come back to sleep. I suggest to download the app Ampere and monitor the real time current consumption to see if it is such case... in normal idle state my note10+ current drain amounts to 180 mA.

Its normal. I would say 98% reaches in no time. After that it discharges fine.
Same to me..after disconnected charger drop to 99% after few second
Yup, normal! Usually drops to 99% in no time! Iphones do the opposite. They take ages to get to 99% and then drop like hell after that haha

Yup. Me too in same boat.
My snapdragon variant of note 10+ 512 Gb drains in 5-8 minutes from 100% to 99% if left untouched after removing provided or any type of charger, slow of fast charge doesn't matters. After that to come to 98% it takes around an hour to come again with untouched. I monitor battery status of phone battery on my galaxy watch. But after 98% it's completely normal and last very good. More then hour or I wound say uoto 90 minutes too for draining 1%. I Beleive reason behind this should be save battery wear and tear and prolonged life that battery after charging should not stay for long at highest possible charge and hence drop to 99 percent soon.
On the other hand I am getting very good 10 hours plus sot with my note 10 plus. Very satisfied. Better then my s10 plus.
Same, it's normal
Mine takes about 30 min to 1 hr, but that means nothing, probably calibration slightly off or maybe voltage sensor, or as the person said all those apps running in the background wake up and start sending data, asking for updates etc. I disabled everything that I could from running in the background, from waking up phone from sleep and took all the permissions away, that programs shouldn't have etc. but it is such a pain I wish SD had a root. BTW this is such a freaking BS, that once you run some program it stays in memory and even loads back on restart, even if you never use it again or manually kill it.
It's Normal For Note10 Plus , I'm on AT&T Note10 Plus Snapdragon Carrier and still get excellent Battery Life As you can see here.

Of course snapdragon variant is much better than the more common Exynos chip. Samsung should use Snapdragon chip globally as it is a superior SOC
Had this with ever phone ive own. You are most likely at 99.9%
Because the phone is no longer 100% because there is no charging happening.
So its normal to display 99% right when removing it.
Yes me too it kept dropping to 99% after I disconnect my charger, during my S8+ times where I just plug in again and make sure its 100% before I unplugged again and I realise aftrr a year of doing, my battery life tend to age faster.
So dont care about dropping to 99% or 89% ! In my case it slow down after 89% ever since (maybe of my daily routine).
Also, for you guys that really afraid that it wont last a day, try to charge it whenever you can but not fully charge, i.e. 20-50% and you are also good to go!
Also, invest a fast charge wireless power bank, this phone got fast wireless charging, trust me its a blessing to have this type of function and you wont be worry about dead battery!
Yep same here drops to 99 withing a couple minutes of disconnecting

Can you advise us some tips and tricks you used to obtain such battery ? life. I am also using snapdragon Canadian variant. But I also get very good battery but still needs your advise. Also which theme are you using, sir?
Thanks a lot.
Meh. I'm more worried about how long it takes to drop to 0%. Only saw it once after nearlyn10 hours of screen time. This phone is a beast.
Drop from 3pc to dead phone is equally instant. My phone died when at 3pc ...this has happened twice.
Yup it's normal as many have confirmed.
I'm averaging a solid 7.5 - 8 hours of OST daily @ 50-60% brightness with pretty heavy usage. YouTube, calls, navigation, Spotify, chat apps, browsing etc..
I'm a power user and I have to charge my battery every 4 hours. I keep my hotspot on and tether it while I stream to. Cant really tell a difference in battery between s10 plus and note 10 plus
I've had my note 10+ for say a month now and I charged it up
when I first got it and It still says 99 percent
never drops and I stream music and talk on the phone and use it to make popcorn
I never charge it ,stays at 99 percent
edit: LOL

Question What's the typical charging speed for Poco F3?

So I charge my phone today from 32% to 100% in 1 hour and it seems like from the videos other guys get a 0-100 charge for that time. So I was thinking that either I have slower because I am using a UK-to-EU adapter for my charger (got it from UK) or that this speed is the typical one. What's your speed guys?
I like to charge my phone slowly (less than 10W - 3-5H charge) overnight which helps improve battery life.

1C charge means 1 hour charge from ~0 to 100%.
2C charge means 30 min charge.. Why would you want to do that to your battery (half capacity at 500 recharges)?
Overnight at C/3 to C/5 does great things for the longevity.
The state of the phone also matters. Wifi, bluetooth, mobile data, music, video, apps, brightness, photo, camera, sensor, power save, battery temperature, surrounding climate, ... etc.
Adapters may also have their maximum output capped. Check on it's spec.

The adapter doesn't have any specs unfortunately. I just bought a EU charger from Aliexpress. Hopefully it charges faster.

Root with Magisk and use Advanced Charging Controller (acc) module.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/advanced-charging-controller-acc.3668427/
Or use old USB charger with the ampere lower, like 2.0A or lower.
That is achieved with slower charging.
PC USB socket most likely will charge VERY slow, to the point that you want it to charge faster.

You will likely need to buy chargers made by Xiaomi if you want even faster charging.
Some technologies will need to match if you want them work at fullest.

Oh I had this magisk module on my Oneplus 5T. Guess I will just download that and its app. Do I need to do anything to make it work like you are saying? I thought it only regulated charging speed for V and temperature.

Yeah this charger is supposed to be legit. Will wait and see when I get it.
Just like the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Poco X3 Pro, among other Xiaomi phones, the Poco F3 battery supports 33W Mi Fast charging and the phone ships with a 33W adapter and a 3A-rated cable.

It has the ability to control and lower the current (unit in mAh default). To make the current controled, you apply the set current and then reboot.
You can read the README in github for more info.
You have to test it though, I can't.
Use app Ampere to confirm the charging speed.

I have successfully charged my device from 0-100 in 18 minutes record. But that fried my battery within 15 days.
Had replied some similar questions.
Some info may be useful to read:
So what is the best android charging habit...?
So I bought POCO X3 Pro earlier this month...So I play games on it mainly and the question is which kind of charging habit is better? 1.Frequently charging to make the percentage between 50%-100% 2.Charge it to 80-90 and try not make to make it...

As correctly said by pl1992aw, I use an old 1A adapter that goes from 20% to 100% in under 5 hours.
With the same strategy my Tab Note 10.1 (not 2014) still has a working battery although it's of no use anymore..

Hahaha that's really overkill I don't want this kind of treatment.
Also charging speed changes based on battery percentage to make battery last longer
The idea with a low power charger to extend the battery life is really nice, cause i usually charge my phone over night and don't want to stress my battery for nothing.

Yeah nobody should want this. I used to mess in the kernel & alter the charge controlling voltage & current values. Soon I realised and concluded that charging a lithium battery with high voltages(9v fast charging) or high current significantly degrades the life of the battery. In addition, charging the battery upto 80% increases the life of battery by 4x in comparison to charging it upto 100%. Phone brands play a trick on us keeping their planned obsolescence marketing in their hands. Now I happily charge my phone with old 1 amp charger. It does slow but the battery wear data is really satisfying.

To add, fast charge is for convenience and emergency eg. forgot to charge at night and need to rush in the morning.
