[Q] Am I the only one who enjoys this phone - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see post about laggy and blah blah I mean this phone isn't perfect but with some adjustments it's a bad ass phone I love it I mean I would love root but it's not a reason to return the phone or anything.. Just saying this phone is really good imho

I agree. It's just that the shortcomings are detrimental for the user experience depending on the issue.
I can see battery life being one if you're a busy person.
Touch screen will drive anyone absolutely bananas
All depends on the batch I guess

Im loving the phone, prob best I've had. Not having root is a small problem but I'll live with that. I've not had touch screen issues or over heating problems.

Its not you, people who are happy dont *****. You only hear the complainers, and there are always going to be people who expect manufactured products to be flawless with no exception or fail rate. Just not realistic. The phone is really nice, has great picture and a great camera.. I have owned several different brands and recently an S6. THere is nothing wrong with this phone. I do feel that at this current rate we may never see root, but i also find this being the first phone that would not be and end all problem for me. If you are happy with the phone, what else matters?

I love it. I do wish tap to wake and the knock code worked better, but they'll be fixed someday. They do seem to work better after rebooting, so I reboot occasionally throughout the day when I'm putting my phone away.
Once we get root and custom roms this phone will be awesome.
Be sure to block the OTA updates so the carriers can't prevent you from getting root!

The G4 is a very well balanced product. Like anything though it has its flaws and it won't please everyone, namely as we all have different likes but most important expectations.
I never expect for my phone's purchased to act like a time travelling device (although beam me up scotty that would be cool ?).
What i do expect is functionality and the G4 meets that for me. Just one thing that Google needs desperately is better optimisation between software & hardware.
Android M who knows may be the answer to our prayers.
But overall hell yeah the G4 is good ?

I think the phone is perfect in most all ways. Software can be buggy and lag at times but that will all get cleared up soon enough!

I upgraded from a Galaxy S5 and even though it isn't a huge leap in terms of performance and battery life (battery life quite the opposite, unfortunately) I enjoy my phone very much.
And as I have an international H815 I rooted it the first day I could unlock the BL. 10A was silky smooth and my only "regret" is that I actually flashed 10C. It's a bit less smooth, a bit laggier now and then. Could be an app too, though. So. all things considered I'm very happy. I don't understand why the leather back doesn't have Qi but that's a different beef ..
Great phone, great UI (though I hate having to use an app like ROM Toolbox to change font and the korean crap themes from LG are absolutely horrible).
Regarding all the threads about problems and issues .. Well, that's what XDA is mostly about. You don't need to discuss how great a phone works, you need to discuss and solve problems..
And since no one's, as far as I can understand it, developing custom roms/CM-builds for it yet all you could discuss are problems.
Does it seem like G4s have lots of issues? Not really. Considering the volumes of manufactured phones you will always have broken phones that slipped through quality control. Firmwares are tested but it's impossible to soak test/lab test a phone's software with every app in the App Store..
Not to mention issues with carriers like the retarded US carriers that disable features and sideload their own generic crapware apps and push updates like there's no tomorrow...
All the forums of all the phones I've had since I started reading XDA have looked exactly the same: Early adopters with, sometimes, premature software/firmware ***** and moan, after a while custom roms/root happen and people cheer like madmen, then ***** and moan about premature custom roms.
And the circlejerk is complete.

Autoprime discusses it here and seems to be updating the post as new information comes out.

I have the H815 rooted with TWRP and I couldn't be happier with this phone. I don't have touch screen issues, or lag issues, or camera issues, etc. Coupled with the battery and sdcard promos, it was a win/win/win for me when I bought this phone.

i love the responses why do you say we may never see root i love this device lol i need adaway!

OP: is this your first smartphone? Did you have a flip phone before?

I love my phone and have had absolutely zero issues with it

People who enjoy the phone tend to stay quiet. People who have problems post comments wondering others are experiencing the same. Its pretty much for all phones and gadgets.

I have actually been LOVING my G4. My old daily driver was the Galaxy Note Edge but then I stumbled on this fella (my first in the G-Series and second LG device) and kind of fell in love with it right off the bat.
So I ended up picking up one for a new daily driver. Right after that though I found out about the no-root issue so then I went out and picked up a couple more of them (I figure I might as well do my part as far as root goes and that will probably end with me bricking one or two of them, so better safe than sorry).
TL;DR -- Yes, I love the hell out of this phone.

I gave up my S6 Edge for this phone. Best move I have ever made on a cell phone. Absolutely love it. I had one in a good batch though. Sort of sucks that you have to get lucky to like a phone.

Same with me

TP2 reliability ?

Just ordered TP2 from Sprint, and already have reservations regarding its reliability... the problem is it's the only new smartphone with both stylus and WM, and I need both these features. Or so I think.
Anyway, I come from Axim X51v which is arguably the best PDA ever sold in States. At least after I took it apart and fixed the super-annoying battery latch issue. Also had iPaq 2215 that was very reliable. So at the very least I expect the new device to last a few months over 2 yr contract.
The only hardware problem I found for TP2 seems to be the digitizer separation / rainbow banding / newton rings whatever you want to call it. Don't know if it's a widespread issue - the poll on PPCGeeks shows 38% affected, but then we all know there's lies, damn lies, and statistics. The people who have a problem are more likely to go out and post about it.
Are there any other issues with this device ? Is the screen problem widespread ? Any reasons to stay away from it ? The other phones I looked at were HTC Hero and Samsung Moment, but both had their fair share of complaints, plus I really want to be able to use stylus and my WM applications. EVO looks great but it's too spanklng new, and I am not paying $10 a month for a privilege to not use 4G when not available.
Any info / horror stories / good experience from longtime TP2 users ?
id say get the Tilt 2 outta the bunch u named. THis is the main thing to remember, with the Tilt 2 u have a stylus and Windows Mobile. Also now u can have Android OS on it also. Now name me one Android phone that can load up WM? its the best of both worlds. best hardware keyboard around. Its a great device in my opinion. i dont have any complaints with it. There are so many tweaks that can be done to it, for optimization. A lot of people up here always saying, ohhh, its sloowww...plz....with my tweaks ive done, id pit my stock rom up against a custom one. Cuz mines is pretty damn fast. plus it takes great pix also. too much stuff to list. I only have good things to say about. nothing really bad, yet...lmao anyways, good luck on ur decision. plus if u do get a tilt 2, u dont have to flash a new rom to get faster. Ive noticed some folks here always want to recommend flashing, no matter what the problem is. You could be like, how do i set up email, and some will respond, Flash a new rom..lmfao You know what i mean. Flashing is cool though. You have to search around for the best and most stable ones that fit ur interests. if u get the tilt 2, PM me, and ill get ya up to speed very quickly.

hahahahaha
I've had the TP2 since the minute it was released and I can only say that I've been very pleased with the experience. It's smooth, stable, feels solid when you hold it, the tilt screen is a nice feature and any time I want a different look for my phone, it doesn't take too much work. I gotta say though that i've needed the stylus only a handful of times but it's nice to have. Know that if you are on a call and you take out the stylus, it automatically takes you to One Note so that you can jot down the info that you may need. While I don't know much about the other devices you mentioned, knowing what I know about the TP2 would lead me to purchase it yet again.
So, maybe it's just me, but I'm on my fifth device. T-Mobile touch pro 2, the first 2 had the rainbow banding, as you desribe it, the next 2 would often turn themselves off when opening or closing the phone.
Hoping 5th time is the charm, and all that. Though, even with all the problems and device swapping, I still wouldn't give up the phone. Best keyboard I've ever used, beating even my beloved SE P990i.
I luv my TP2! I've had it since launch-day in August.
While there have been plenty of complaints on these boards about this and that, they're almost all complaints about software...or indirectly about software as in "the software is too big for the hardware" -- stuff like that.
The vast majority of "problem" threads are issues about software.
I think it's safe to say that hardware problems are rare (except for those unfortunate few who seem jinxed).
Or Ummagumma could just flash a new custom ROM...

The Nexus brand should come to an end...

I really think Google needs to do a HUGE investment into the Development and QA department for Android. Android is huge and requires more attention then they are giving it. Google really needs to get more hands on Android and better testing so less buggy software gets out of the gate.
I have owned all of the Nexus phones and they are always pretty buggy until a few updates later.
I currently have to deal with slow screen rotation, multi-touch issues, laggy landscape keyboard response and crashes, SMS text bugs, Wifi bugs to name a few. How in the hell did the slow screen rotation and laggy landscape response go unnoticed is beyond me. I noticed it the first day i got the phone.
The NEXUS brand should come to an end, its essentially just like buying an iphone…….you pay extra for it, and its no better than anything else out there, or less than anything else out there.
The problem is Nexus is no longer a developer phone. Its now a brand. I knew i was not getting this nexus because sammy had there hands on it.
are you on 4.0.1?, 4.0.2? 4.0.3?
is your phone rooted?
are you running the GSM version or the CDMA version of the galaxy nexus?
is it stock android O.S.?
I don't have any of those issues on mine....
I'm running stock 4.0.2, getting software updates firectly from Google not samsung.
Everyone says the only reason you should buy Nexus phones is because they are so much better than other manufacturers phones. I'm not talking about rooting and such, because you can do that too with other phones and it would be the same.
It’s not just about timely updates. Even the 4.0.3 source code has bugs. This means that all these devices based off 4.0.3 can (and might) have the bugs as well. Then, you have to wait for Google to update the source and maybe just maybe your manufacturer of choice will update your phone before moving onto something else.
Well don't buy a Nexus device again. Then you don't have to worry about those problems, and the people who love the Nexus phone can continue to love it whilst you love your Droid Epic Galaxy 4G Super Touch Plus thing that you buy.
Thats the good thing about Android, you have choice. Your opinion doesn't mean anything, Google aren't going to do anything about it. Find a phone that you like and use it.
Also, have you ever used another Android phone other then the Nexus? Carrier bloat and skins make me shudder.
I disagree with the paying extra. It's essentially like buying any other phone whereas, the iPhone would be $100-$300 more than other phones depending on the sku. I have no complaints with my Nexus but I'm not trying to argue with your dissatisfaction or defend the brand, I just don't see the paying extra part which obviously varies from country to country.

Rooting is one thing, but we like the nexus because of its bootloader and lack of bloat. Let's face it, iphone is easy mode, android(nexus) is expert mode.
Easy mode is... well.. easy. It is easy to master but gets stale incredibly fast and is lacking in features. Expert mode you have to read a couple forums, do a little tweaking, but in the end you get a pro longed satisfying experience that is rich in features and really let's you become... a superuser.
Ps rotation delay is a feature, just tap the screen for it to rotate faster.

I wanna try out the Droid Epic Galaxy 4G Super Touch Plus.
Just for a little input, the rotation "Lag" that you talk about is supposed to be there. People were complaining that there phone would rotate to easily so they made lag so that just tilting your phone for a second wouldn't rotate it you had to actually want to rotate it. Takes an extra second, if that.
Also, ICS was released, you knew that when you bought the phone, you expect a completely clean product the second it comes out? Look at Apple with there battery bug, no OS comes out without it's fare share of bugs, Android is no different.
Also also, why cancel an entire line of phones because you have one mad customer? You don't.
Finally, Google picks a different handset maker every year to make their "Nexus" phone, just because "sammy" made it doesn't take away from the fact that it's a Nexus. Go buy a Razr with Motoblur and enjoy having a "Bug free enviroment" on an OS that is over a year old.

OK fair enough but its pretty much an unspoken rule that you have to flash the **** out of a nexus phone. Unlocked bootloader and all that. Aosp etc.

We considered that, and nobody cares. Thats the way the phone is, stop complaining about it and do something about it. We aren't you brain, do some thinking for yourself.
Root your phone if you want to fix the issues, or wait for Google to issue an update.
Nexus phones have historically been far cheaper than average. N1 and nexus s both sold for $529 from day 1. Only the Gnex broke this tradition.
Typical phone launches higher than $600.

Na man, it's terrible. It's running this MotoTouchSenseWizBlur software. It's the worst skin out of the lot!
lol what kind of topic is this? nexus brand should to an end pfff
sorry to all hear you have all those bugs, im glad AOKP is smoother than ever on my nex
For reference, my last phone was a Palm Centro. Lasted 5+ years, bugs and all. I also work in the computer hardware industry, so while I am new to the current smartphone format and OS, I am versed in technology.
If you wanted something that was already polished out of the box, that's where the other Android and iPhone comes in. Works well out of the box depending on the model. If you want a 'pure' Android experience, the G. Nexus is the appealing one. I think in this case 'pure' is a bad word choice, as it denotes only good. However, it is both good and bad. In the 3 months I've owned the phone. I've def. thought to myself "****! I've got to fix this again!" AND "holy crap! this is way cooler than iOS!" It sucks that you have to extensively play with the phone, but once you do, the opportunities are much more appealing.
TL; DR: Don't buy something like a Nexus if you don't want to transform it to it's full potential.
Why are people still on stock on the Nexus....its a NEXUS!!
ITS A DEV PHONE!!!
you are SUPPOSED to hack it!!!
don't complain if stock doesn't have all that you want..
btw...i was on stock for 2 days...no bugs.
Ived owned two nexus phones and theyve been the best phones I have ever owned. Sometimes they do lack the performance other Androids have but the support/development for this phone is the best IMO.
Can we stop making these useless threads about how "Google is ignoring us", cause I can guarantee you they are probably working their asses off trying to get the next update to us before I/O.

[Q] Known issues for stock unrooted TmoUSA SGS3?

(Apologies if this has been covered recently, I didn't see anything similar in the first few pages)
After having the pleasure of MS deciding that my favorite phone (HD2) should be obsolete I upgraded to the HTC One S. I am now on my third One S and Tmobile has promised to swap it out for a different model (so long as I pay the $ difference) should I continue to have problems. My first choice thus far is the SGS3, but I want to make sure it isn't as worthless as the One S. Can anyone give me a good idea of what the current unresolved issues are with this phone, keeping in mind that I won't be rooting or loading custom roms?
Thanks!

As far as my phone is concerned, I cannot see any issues. I've had my phone since June 24 and everything on it works just fine as it should. It is the BEST phone I have ever had. Battery life is great and lasts all day. It also charges fast. Camera takes great pics and speeds are blazing fast. I have also reached the fasted download speeds I have ever obtained on a phone (about 28 Kbps). It has a beautiful huge screen and voice quality is awesome. It has enough memory that is almost never lags and can handle my 248 apps like nothing! After having owned 4 different HTC phones, I can honestly tell you, this is the best phone out there now.
after hating all my android phones but really wanting to stick with the operating system (i guess i'm stubborn and really didn't want to go to the iphone or windows phone haha) i actually switched to at&t and got the one x... after a week i couldn't stand it. from what i hear, everything i found wrong with the one x was wrong with the one s as well.
i'm back on t-mobile now and got sick of waiting for my eventual giving up and just jumping to the next iphone, and just got the galaxy s3 on saturday, and so far i couldn't be happier. i've never loved a phone like this before. all the problems that have plagued my previous phones from lockups to crashing to slowdown to everything else... haven't experienced ANY of it so far. there's nothing i'm not happy about with it. still plan on reading the xda boards but don't plan on rooting for a long time because there's really nothing i need to fix.
so anyway just wanted to throw that out at you cause it sounds like your'e kinda in my same shoes that i was last week haha.
wrong post - sorry
Best phone I have owned to date, and I have had just about every Samsung, HTC and iPhone ever made.

hello lg

Hi im new coming over from the sgs2. im just wondering how you guys/girls are taking a liking to your phones. i see some troll threads on here and i just want to see how the gen pop thinks about it. it was this or note 2, i chose the lg because the note is to large for a pocket imo. also iv owned htcs motorolas samsungs all the big guys but never an lg. so im stoked about that and about coming over here with all you fine folks. happy holidays to everyone and i look forward to chatting, helping, and being helped by everyone.
Hi and welcome. It's a great phone. Ignore the trolls

I love the phone so far. I rooted and unlocked so I could remove the few Sprint bloatware apps. Not a lot of movement on the dev front so far, but people are working on it. I expect CM for it some time, if not soon then soon after the JB update is released.
As far as the phone itself, it's fast (duh), the screen is gorgeous, and the default UI is honestly not that bad, especially compared to some others. I came to this from the Evo, and I have a S2 from work, and this is by far the best of the three. Battery life is great for me, except when my job sends me to areas with bad coverage, then it seems to drain faster than the S2. I guess that is my one real complaint, but we'll see how bad the drain is once custom kernels become a little more stable. You'll love this phone.
very cool thanks for the response. im so excited about this and i hear the next nexus is going to be and lg? btw not that it would stop me but how much is rooting and unlocking with an lg? easy or pain in the butt
Rooting phone is easy. I believe someone has an all in one root/unlock but doing both separately is easy too. Just read through development thread and it shouldn't take you long. Right now nothing worth flashing so I haven't unlocked but stock UI with bloatware removed is running smooth for me. So far I love this phone. Nothing seems to slow it down and the screen is gorgeous. Battery life has been better than all my previous phones (OG Evo, GS2) but never lasts as long as you'd like it to. This phone is the Nexus 4 older brother so we should get some AOSP our way sooner or later. Enjoy!
Ah i see you took the blue pill .. welcome to the rabbit hole. This phone is great bro your gonna love it.
cool now i cant wait!! tuesday wont come soon enough. and i like the matrix comment

Smoothness Becomes Less Eventually?

The first day I got the phone, it was so smooth that I couldn't believe it. Now after one month's usage it feels less smooth. I notice stutter here and there, while scrolling through WhatsApp list, while entering and exiting apps etc. Is this because the performance is degrading or am I just getting used with it and my mind demands more?
In any case, will a custom ROM like PureNexus be any better in terms of this? I'm on ElX kernel.

Nah, it will be the same. Allot of it is just the app not being smooth, not the OS. Over time the cache builds and things just stutter some. The device is still a beast

Hard to say for sure, but for the most part I feel like its just as smooth as day one. In fact, I was thinking recently how impressed I was that I hadn't reboot my phone for 3 weeks and its been rock solid stable and buttery smooth the whole time. I'm on full stock, rooted with TWRP.

Not to get too OT but I gotta step in and say something. What are you doing here on XDA? Every time I go into a thread I'm bound to see a post from you just ****ting all over this phone. Your comments are unconstructive and extremely off-putting. Some posters here have had their phone for a month or so, maybe less. If you went out a bought a new Mustang and someone came up to you and said "That car is a piece of ****, I can't beleive you like that thing." you'd feel pretty bad right? Or at least ticked off. I get that you miss your Note 7, I really do. Hang in there and you'll get your Note 8 soon enough.
----
Back on topic, the phone is still smooth as hell for me. It'll trip on a few things here and there but it's really so minor and occurs so rarely that when I catch it I question if it actually even happened. If that makes sense.. I think when we start to see optimized ROMs and Kernel devs begin merging in cherry-picked updates to Sched and upstream updates, things will get near flawless with this phone. The one thing that concerns me is the lack of F2FS. The storage speed on this phone is pretty lacking, as discussed in my thread discussing why the OP3T with similar hardware is so much faster than this phone. F2FS is much easier on the phone's storage whereas EXT4 will eventually lead to performance degradation over time. Again, I feel that Kernels will rectify this in the future.
Another facet of this might just be that you're used to the speed by now. I'm sometimes still amazed by how much faster this phone is at certain tasks than my Nexus 5X, but when I first got this phone I was in awe nearly all the time when using it. Now it just seems normal to me.
I am coming from using an S7 (which has the same ram and processor as the Note 7) and this Pixel is MUCH faster than my S7 was.
I myself had the Note 7 and this phone puts the Note 7 to shame in a speed comparison. My note 7 lagged like no other. Maybe mine was a defective one but my Pixel XL is blazing fast even after about 2 months of usage. ?

I haven't noticed any speed degradation - had XL over a month now.
It's still a piece of ****, but it's still fast.
I cannot believe you people orgasming over this garbage phone.
I'm only keeping it because FI is so cheap for low data usage.

If you don't like the phone, why are you even on XDA? Just use the phone until you can get rid of it and keep your crappy opinion to yourself. These threads aren't meant for discussing how bad it is. The idea is that we all work constructively with the hopes of achieving the best possible user experience for everyone

My previous phone was a Note 7. My standards are a bit high... If you are not familiar with Note 7, it's like trading in a Bugatti Veyron for a Mustang (and yes, I own a Stang.)

No thanks on the Samjunk. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Funny how non garbage it was considering the outcome of exploding phones, only to end up EOLd in a landfill

I am so hopeful for this too man.

Another facet of this might just be that you're used to the speed by now. I'm sometimes still amazed by how much faster this phone is at certain tasks than my Nexus 5X, but when I first got this phone I was in awe nearly all the time when using it. Now it just seems normal to me.

Yes, I mentioned that in OP for that reason only. I am sure that my mind is getting used with the smoothness and it demands more, much more
Just got to give the devs time. Perfection takes time.
I personally moved away from Samsung a while back. Last sammy device i had was the Note 4.
I still have an S3 mini which in all reality is a "piece of garbage"but all i use it for is a glorified MP3 player while im out doing work and i dont wish to possibly destroy my PixelXL or whatever im using.
But back on track. Samsungs devices least back in the day were very well built! And aside from Touchwiz not to terrible!
But this Pixel XL blows me away. I came to this device from a Nexus 6 which I absolutely loved! The Pixel XL has surprised me since day 1! Im currently running Pure Nexus on it. Its the initial build as the second build wasnt important enough for me to update. Dont mind that i cant shut down. (LOL)
I reboot my device a couple times a week as a pure habit. I feel a fresh start every so often is never a bad thing.
One thing to possibly try if an app becomes sluggish is clear the apps cache while you see it being a bit of a jerk.
If that doesnt help. Clear the system cache in recovery and see if that helps. Your first boot might take a bit longer but you could see a difference.
My suggestion to you is. Try out Pure Nexus. Or any custom rom for that matter! There are several now. We have 2 boot slots to use on this device which is fantastic! If you dont like a certain rom? Try another! Or.... go back to your stock slot! Just read up and educate yourself on how the boot slots work and what happens during flashing. Its not like our old school Safe Strap from back in the day! (Or multiROM for that matter) Well kinda.... but works differently.
Enjoy Pixelers!

I'm venting here because I'm searching for a way to fix my brand new beautiful Mustang - you see, one tire is constantly losing pressure and the trunk just straight up doesn't close.
In other words, I'm extremely frustrated with my brand new $930 device. And the fact that Google just released a 50MB security update and still didn't fix a crippling BT bug introduced in 7.1.1 doesn't help the issue.

If I remember correctly from Mario's front page article on the OP3T, F2FS can be enabled through TWRP. I recall tidy one reason it's not enabled by default on most devices is some remaining bugs/issues to sort out.

Not to go further OT, but what are your main gripes with the Pixel?

Took me a while to find it but Jerry Hildenbrand had some interesting thoughts on bluetooth issues with Nougat and how they're potentially related to bluetooth stack and certain hardware that people are trying to pair their Android N phones to. Look for his posts in this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-pixel-xl/755478-there-speaker-issue.html
I don't know whether he's on the mark here or not. . All I do know is that I have no issues with connectivity with my car, Fossil Q Marshal or JBL Charge 2+ . . all relatively new devices . . so i do wonder how some are experiencing issues while others like myself are not.

Back on topic - IMO loss in smoothness always boils down to resources as users settle into devices and continue to add software and tweaks to their devices. The more we use the device and add to it, the more apps start to battle for resources either in terms of running services or cached ones. The variation in now we each use our devices leads to variation in experiences as the OS deals with balancing available resources against the services and apps that need to be running vs cached.

Jerry Hildenbrand? That weird beard mofo? How can he possibly fix a bt bug that was introduced in a recent Google update?
First just don't feed the trolls.
I would definitely recommend a custom rom.
The one that said customs are the same than stock just flashed the wrong roms.
Pure is much smoother and snappier than stock.
And there are roms that feels like night and day if it comes to smoothness.
So just try them out and you will see and feel the difference.

This has how I started to deal with trolls but I'm to the point where I just read their post and see how it's going to end anyways and don't even waste my time even thinking of replying.
