Cortana for Android leaked - One (M9) Themes and Apps

In case you missed it, a beta version of the forthcoming Android version of Cortana has been leaked. You seem to need a Microsoft account to do much with it.
The xda thread is here.

Cool, thanks! I used it a little yesterday and some today......Then did an "OK Google" today, for a comparison answer, and didn't realize how "un-human" it the Google Now voice sounded compared to Cortana. Cortana is also a little "sassy" sometime (more so than Siri).

Yeah, Siri is the boss's snooty secretary; Cortana is that sassy girl in HR who might hook up with you if you get her drunk enough.

Microsoft bought Skype, good news for us !

Well yes, Microsoft did bought skype (read it HERE ) and that means Windows 7 and WP7 get special treatment =)
"It is assumed that the main motive of Microsoft (Ballmer) to buy Skype just for Windows phone 7 Phone Nokia in cooperation with the integration of VOIP services in the system as a competitive option Voice Google and Apple Facetime."
well, 8.705 billion $ is a lot of money for something like skype
It is a lot of money, however you have to assume that it is a fairly profitable company that should pay for itself and in addition bring features to the WP7 platform

My sentiments also. To me, Skype is junk and I can't see how MS can make anything good of it.

Can't be that bad if 663 Million people use it.
I think this is great gives microsoft another weapon in their arsenal to use for WP7 & Xbox.
Just think of being able to talk to someone on your wp7 to someone using kinect with the xbox hooked upto their tv etc
Well, well, well. Maybe we'll see a Skypephone that doesn't suck then

I completely agree with you but the price seems crazy. I don't see Microsoft making their money back anytime soon.
i think MS knows what they are doing...
Skeype is a good tool for business ppl to be mobile and still keep the same number..
Skype Pro services are not bad too.
i am not sure how good or bad MS take over of Skype for Android users....
anyway the Windows live will be intigreted in the peoples hub in WP7.5 n and if Skype will be as well then i think it will be great for us as users..
So..... what was wrong with WLM? Doesn't it already do video chat?
Someone please explain? Or is this a way to hold off the competition because Skype is already on just about every OS.

I can't "explain" it, and nobody seems to be able to make total sense of this acquisition. While individual pieces may be reasonable, the price tag is just outrageous.
I mean, VoIP may be useful, Skype together with WLM will be one big IM network, but there just isn't so much money as to justify the price.
If Google got Skype that would probably be bad for MS's "cloud" push, Google is already to big in online. But still, 8.5bn? In cash? Jesus...

Think about it... Microsoft just bought a **** ton of patents relating to VOIP. It's pre-emptively striking.
I like it, I use WLM and Skype. One less service when they roll them up together
600k new members signing up a day is why they bought Skype.
A good deal that fits nicely into their portfolio and with $50b spare cash reserves why not.

LOL....no lie. Know what makes sense of this deal? Ballmer. Period. Wild hair, woke up on the wrong side of the bed, paranoia that Google is actually a single person who replaces all his furniture with exact replicas while he sleeps...who the hell knows why Ballmer does some of the retarded stuff he does. But it only makes sense when you consider it not as a Microsoft deal but as a Ballmer deal. I'll be interested in seeing how quickly Microsoft turns Skype into the Visual FoxPro of VOIP. Visual what? Yeah, exactly.

Awfully quet here

Maybe a god side or not? =) Maybe WP7 is so good XDA dont haver the same relevance, maybe there isnt any users left?

Really there's nothing to talk about until Mango and the new devices that will bring. Everything has been said already, the same arguments have exploded again and again. It's just a waiting game now.
I used to be more active in the Captivate section ... But it was because there was always the hope that something would come out that would fix the lag, GPS etc. Fortunately with my Focus, everything just works. It's kinda nice haha.
Yep. Patiently waiting for Mango.
Nice to not be alone being satisfied with WP7. I am only waiting for my carrier contract to end so i can switch and let the call issuess drop. I love my Omnia 7, i really do, its the best phone i have to date (Used HD2 and was happy then). But the Edge problem with Samsung Phones in generall is a annoyence.
Still i come here to hope for some small things. I still want my flashligt 8Camera led) app like HTC without hacking.
Used to hack phones a lot before, but with WP7 it´s not that importent.

I wholeheartedly agree WP7 does almost everything I need my smartphone to do but it will not play audio books. I have them on my phone but I cannot save my spot. It treats an audio book like a mp3. I tried treating it as a podcast but Zune then fails to see it. I am stuck using my damn Nano.
This is a big missing item for me. Combine that with the lack of vendor support and I am getting frustrated. No audible application. No HBOGo application. No LogMeIn ignition. I even boycotted audible and told them they lost a customer of over 5 years until they step up and get my my WP7 app. No luck so far...
It seems WP7 is still not considered a player and that is very frustrating because overall this phone rocks!

I won't give up hope that there'll be an update through Zune or some sort of ROM for officially developer unlocked devices. If not, heck, I'll have to wait for the official release. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.

Yes, the naysayers, doom sayers "it's not my old WM6.5 whiners" and "WP7 is a fail" sayers are gone. I really miss the latter, they were comic abusers of the English language. I challenged all of them to return after Mango and apologize for wasting space here and wasting our time with their frustrated, comical rants. They are gone because the news is universally good relative to WP7. Aquisitions, alliances, features etc. have all been good and in fact, much better than any of us had dreamed. It will turn out that WP7 is an OS and UI to reckon with. I am very pleased with my Focus and was one of those WM 6.5 tweakers and flashers who initially thought I missed all of that wasted time spent waiting for a new ROM to flash. No need anymore and don't want to be there ever again.

You may want to look at Overdrive. It's Audio books from your library. I just installed it yesterday and looking for my library card to check out my first Audio book.
Thanks Guys.
Unfortunately Audiobookmark and Overdrive both only support mp3 formats.
Although I am glad to see Overdrive is now available - it is still not really useful until they implement WMA support. Almost all the audiobooks I checked out and are interested in are in WMA format, aaaaaaargh.
I did find a very kludgey workaround. I load the book onto my iPod. I then pull it off using iDump which gets it on my computer in a m4b format. I change the file tag genre to "Podcast" and then add it into Zune.
That finally gave me the ability to listen to my audiobooks as podcasts which allows me to use bookmarks in an audiobook checked out from Overdrive. A bit of work. Not sure if it is worth it to not use my old iPod.
Its quiet because there is literally nothing going on with WP7 right now. Nothing.
Until mango. When it gets here, there will be a burst of threads and new arguments.

Well currently there is absolutely nothing to talk about isn't it? It's still the same crippled OS with no Marketplace for most countries, no native letters and proper maps for most either, until Mango comes this fall - easily 4 months away. Plus not even one more new phone since launch. No customizations either. So what to talk about?
The user base here is pretty much limited to people who just "patiently wait" for upgrade. Those who didn't want to compromise their usage already switched to something else.
I am really curious what will be WP7 situation after Mango with unstoppable wave of Android and new iPhone. Really really curious how Nokia/WP7 will appear because honestly all other OEMs didn't REALLY meet my expectations.
So summing this up: exiting times ARE ABOUT to come, so it's hard to repeat endlessly future plans here.

Given Google's vast resources, this could blow away Siri.
Although I'll never understand the obsession with these type of applications.

No, no, no.

I just really don't find it practical at all.
Let's see... I could either...
A) hit search and type what I want real quick and hit enter
or
B) load up an app, talk to it, have it take a second to figure out what I'm saying, then it searches and, assuming it understood me correctly (and don't give me the BS that Siri always does I tried it and it doesn't), get what I could have spent half the time looking for handed to me....and look like a weirdo in public doing it.
Yeah, no thanks, I'll choose A.
I just don't understand the fascination with this recent crop of voice-recognition software. I get the "natural language interpretation" angle. That is exactly what needs to be enhanced...but...aside from that (and procession power, sampling ability and storage capacity) I have been doing command and action oriented voice recognition since, what, 1992? 1993? It was an addon pack to OS/2 v3.0 Warp. I think Dragon Naturally Speaking came out shortly thereafter....I could be wrong, It's been a while and I was a teenager back then.
Sure, the response is quicker...some times, we are network bound now....and it is a slight bit more accurate, they used to be trained to you....and thank GOD it doesn't require the training sessions it used to, though that reduces flexibility for accents and dialects....but...it's the same god-damned trick. Siri is no different, it's just a slightly (very slightly) more thoughtful implementation of the same 20+ year old technology except now we are server bound which, on Sprint, can be a horrifying experience at times.
I do think this is one of the many "next steps", but, it still hasn't gone gold yet. I'm a little surprised that Apple put out beta software. Especially given that it's been beta for 20 years now. There is no end game. It's infinitely incremental improvement....perhaps that is why. Though I think it is more telling that Apple felt they needed something ostensibly "this big" to compete that they were willing to put out beta software.
Interesting times....
I'm not gonna lie I love Siri for things like setting alarms, meetings, reminders, and calendar events. Stuff like that is helpful and quick but I don't need it to text for me or read me texts or search for me.
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but "Majel" could refer to Majel Barrett Roddenberry, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. She was and still often is the voice of Starfleet's computers.
its funny we look schizo talking into our PHONES... I think its the note-passing tween girl 'social' networking market that keeps not talking on our phones alive... imagine if people were on an old corded phone talking to all their friends as much as people text now... I know I would throw that person out if my house... anyways... I like voice recognition for driving... and I talk texts all the time in my work van... dreaming of sideswiping the idiots texting while driving... seriously... doing makeup/shaving while driving is bad enough... but texting is just silly... youre not that important, get over yourself... I dont care who you are. Heres an idea... here in WA state, we have a distracted driving law... poorly enforced... it would be AWESOME if those who got caught texting while driving had the transcripts of the conversation read aloud in court... and hopefully published if funny enough.
grrrr... phones are for hacking not idle conversation!
I still don't understand why Siri is even this big of a discussion like Matty said, it'd be much faster to do it manually then to wait on a robot.

Ways for this to blow Siri out of the water:
Use Majel Roddenbury's voice from Star Trek licensed from her son
Integrate Siri-like voice commands to an API for IP-remote applications for Google TV and other Smart TVs
This would pretty much steal the thunder away from any Apple TV rumor

Audible app "slightly delayed"

I am not sure if anyone is interested but I got a response from Audible about their WP7 app. I dipped my toe into the WP7 waters (I have been an Android fanboy for a while) and I love it but I use Audible a lot. It is the only app that I used regularly on Android that has not been released.
For now, I stripped the drm off the files (shhhh) and used the ingenious "create a podcast" solution in the forum.
Hello Rich,
Thank you for contacting Audible.
I understand that you are inquiring about the release date of the Windows Phone App. I will be more than glad to answer your questions regarding this app.
At this moment, we don't have the release date available since it was slightly delayed due to a technical problem we had on the testing phase of this App. Our App is almost ready to be released; however, we are currently working on the final details to ensure you that we will provide you with a high quality product. When the application is complete, we will be announcing it on our website, newsletter, and social media channels.
Thanks for your interest in using Audible with Windows Phone. If you need any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
David A.

So what happened? I still don't have it in the marketplace even though I have read at least two blogs that say it is now available. The blogs also mention that Draw Something should be available but it is not. It also is not mentioned on the Audible webiste.
I have been wondering if there is some sort of misunderstanding. The guy that presented it was also talking about the ability to control the app with the voice interface. I have been wondering if he meant that the tool will be available in the sdk later in the day. I did not hear the entire presentation.
I have to admit as an Android user, I keep thinking that maybe there is a cache somewhere that needs to be cleared or some sort restriction in the market.
Audible app is not in Indian marketplace yet. Dunno about other marketplaces.

From the Windows Phone blog comments (by MS employee):
This is not a US-only app. There was a bug that happened only in the UK and 4 other countries (I don't have the list handy at the moment but wanted to respond to this without waiting), it was resubmitted last night with a fix for it, so it should show up soon.

A lot of Apple hater discredit Siri too much. Siri is not just another piece of "voice recognition" software that recognize the keywords you speak to it. It understands natural language a lot better than what the voice search currently available on Android does. Although Siri definitely is still in its infancy stage, none of the Siri-clone out there comes close.
What Google announce today can change that completely, as what they showed on stage is simply as good as Siri, if not much better. This simply makes all other Siri competitor on Android seem dumb and useless. S-Voice, hello? Honestly, this kind of voice search capability requires a lot of data and engineering effort. Not something a company like Samsung can come up with. Everyone had expected Google would revamp voice search to do better at natural language voice recognition since the debut of Siri. I don't even know why Samsung bother to waste their time coming up with POS like S-Voice.

Lol it just annoys me that Apple talks about how crazy and innovative Siri is when all they initially did was just buy out the company that has been working at it forever. Haven't seen much innovation from apple recently tbh.
But the new voice search looks awesome. Really fast too. Should be promising

I do wonder if there is a reason they glossed over the voice improvements. Basically they showed how you could perform a search using natural language and get formatted data in return (along with a voice response). That is only half of the equation imho. They didn't show it performing actions based off natural language commands (reminders, sending messages, calendar events). Something tells me this part is not finished yet (and it is where Siri will still be way ahead).
if this works just like the way they showed it, all over the world in most of the languages, then absolutely. Siri only really works like you see it in the USA, the UK version just sucks and dont even try other languages

It will only work for American English to begin with as they announced in the keynote.

Lol it just annoys me that Apple talks about how crazy and innovative Siri is when all they initially did was just buy out the company that has been working at it forever. Haven't seen much innovation from apple recently tbh.

Regardless of how they got it, SIRI is very innovative.
When are we supposed to have access to this?

I'm not sure whether this is the secret Majel project everyone was so excited about.

I would like to know too. Is this the Star Trek "Majel" project they have been talking about since last year ?
Or is that delayed to the Nexus-Four Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie coming in November ?

My guess is Google has only given us a small part of Majel. Since it is built into voice search, perhaps it is something they can update through the Play Store app later this year when it becomes the full blown "Assistant".
