5.1 Official Update for Verizon M9 - Verizon HTC One (M9)

Would like to hear feedback as far as when and where the 5.1 update shows up, as well as any problems downloading or applying the update.
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Tapatalk

Nothing yet. Are we sure this is happening today?
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Tapatalk

It was tweeted 5 days ago by Mo Versi https://twitter.com/moversi?lang=en that Verizon and TMo would be dropping today
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Tapatalk

Yes I follow Mo also. I've not seen evidence of the update yet. And I just looked and it doesn't look like Mo has tweeted in several days. So you can make of this what you will. If someone gets the OTA notification please at least mention that this is go for today.

I agree, looks like he over promised as usual. I got a non-answer from @HTCUSA.

Ironically, that's where they told us 7/20, so FWIW...

Apparently tmo is getting 5.1.1 today. VZW tomorrow?

Thx for linking that Gumby. I've been a lil busy. Still nothing for VZW. I'm starting to wonder if big red wanted more bloat added, thought the push could be optimized or they are objecting to something new that we won't get. Figures we'll be the last in line. I've looked around and see no updates of any sort.
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Tapatalk

Still no official update. This is looking typical. Are there any rumors floating around as to what the VZW holdup is? Stagefright patch? Wait... I know... VZW asked HTC to unlock the FM radio. Lol

Well T-Mobile just got there OTA. Hopefully that means we'll get it soon.

Verizon is always the last to get updates. Every single Verizon phone I have owned is always 2-4 weeks behind everyone else.

I'm still getting such bad battery life that if this firmware doesn't make it better I'm going to TMO and having them buy out my edge program. So COME ON FIRMWARE. I'm not optimistic.

Here is the think. Are you speaking of Firmware. FirmWare of Which has to go to Computer engineers and not the swash of Software Engineers that exist and work for every company?
Here is the thing And It seems that you and MANY MANY people do not understand Hardware.
They are still trying to optimize the code that RUNS the hardware. The screen is done already no power improvement can be done there as it is manufactured. Kernel level code that controls when its on etc yes can be modified. Updating the Firmware is no guarantee that it will make power consumption better. Optimizing the Kernel and how the CPU is used and when to shut things off will help. BUT there is a limit to where they have made it as efficient as possible. Can you come up with some solution that allows the Radios to communicate better that is certified with current technology. OF Course but it may only relate to when its on(HOW MUCH POWER IT USES-You want good signal right?).
The thing is the unit is hungry by default. A Simple Firmware Upgrade just isn't going to fix battery drain UNLESS
and I SAY UNLESS
there is a major bug that keeps a unit*component on the board* running, or IE using max power for the radio due to a signal strength glitch, or something that keeps the CPU on all the time instead of sleeping..... Things like these are fixable in an update.
If they can find power draining bugs/glitches then yes a firmware upgrade would help
Other wise IT is rare that they can just optimize over and over and over again. There are only so many fixable power draining issues that are caused by code that an be fixed.
This is something That I have learned while working on my BS of CE. Now Industry techs who pioneered this tech would be able to give a better answer
Also they have to make CPU profiles that fit everyones needs. When people install Power saving Profiles they get better battery life at risk of CPU strength. This is just nature and a way that modern can personalize their devices.
Also Android is still a battery hog :/ and the fact plenty of places have crappy signal suck to.

I have not experienced any type of battery drain on the phone. However the M9 seems to suck battery when running apps that require the screen to be on, or use a lot of resources to run. I do not see this as a problem with the phone, it is a problem with battery technology not keeping up with phone technology. Or to even elaborate more, there are much better and longer lasting batteries that could be used in phones, we just wont accept paying $2,000 for that technology. If you think this phone is bad you should try out the s6. You can drain the s6 battery in about 25 min with the screen on if you are lucky. I guess that is the cost of a better screen.

I disagree. I would bet it's this horrible os called lollipoop. Or the crappy kernel. But its debatable, I think the battery technology is actually pretty good.

What are you doing when you notice the battery draining?

TBolt or DInc2...

Go.

tbolt if you want LTE
inc 2 if you want a slightly smaller screen
we also know that the tbolt dev community is quite large.
Consider...
Everything I've read says that the Inc2 gets MUCH better battery life.
Inc2 is not rooted and will likely not have the same size development community.
That said, after 12 hours with the 2 I have to say I'm very happy. Battery life is much better than the og inc and the screen is very nice.
Can't complain.

Nail... Meet Head.
I guess it comes down to this.
If you know you have 4g in your area, or getting it soon, and want fast speeds, Thunderbolt.
If you want worldwide GSM roaming, and probably not getting lte soon, then Dinc2 would be it.

I had the TB and took it back after 3 days. The battery was so bad I couldn't stand it and the screen is better on the Inc2, and the Inc2 feels a million times better in the hand.
if you want a smaller, better battery life, 3g global phone that will never be rooted get the dinc2
if you care about development and haz lte in ur area get a tbolt
I wouldn't say never

Not to troll but Im really confused as to why HTC even released the Inc 2 and even more confused as to why someone would buy it with the Thunderbolt and Charge on the market. I could maybe see releasing it at the sub $100 price point but they didn't do that.

wrong. one reason it may not get rooted is there probably won't be much dev support for the device. add that to the locked bootloader and..... never is a definite possibility.

This is something I've seen other developer types implying but I haven't been sure why. Why don't people in the know think there will be much dev support for this phone? I saw somebody tweet sarcastically when this very forum was announced that it would be mostly empty. Is it because the Dinc2 is not the top hotshot 4G phone? Is it seen as sort of a who-cares minor release? Are sales expected to be low? What is it?
As for the locked bootloader, the Tbolt had that too, right? That didn't seem to slow anybody down. Is it just luck to find an exploit that let's you unlock it and so nobody knows if it'll happen?
We had a tbolt for months before it was released to the public, had engineering firmware that bypassed signature checks, an old ruu with a known vulnerability in its radio to unlock the emmc, and a large following on day 1.
A different beast.

Android L in question?

According to this source, LG has not released any good info on if or when we will see the update, unlike many other manufacturers have stated.
http://m.techradar.com/news/phone-a...l-5-0-release-date-when-can-i-get-it--1257804
Yeah I saw that as well this was my first LG may be my last if this is true
Who cares until its a week plus since the other manufacturers release L? The other guys may have a approximate date but that means nothing (the past proves this statement). For all we know lg will be the first non nexus device to get it pushed out.
Good news? http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/lg-g3-android-lollipop-update-may-land-by-end-of-2014-24-10-2014/
Even once it's released. How many will actually update before a root method is out there for it. lol
Do you think T-Mobile might lock the device down when it releases this update? If they don't, does that make it easier to root? I am just one of those impatient always want the new shiny thing guys
i see a nexus 6 in my future. i am going to wait for the officail lollipop release for the nexus 4 (my back up phone) then install that, sell the G3 and put the money toward my nexus 6..... i tried but i just cant get used to the skins, and i miss cynaogenmod with a working camera.

Man I'm in the same boat. Using n5 and debating selling the g3. Good hardware laggy software. I'd keep it and use aosp if I knew it wasn't still a month or two away from working camera and BT. AND I DON'T KNOW THAT lol just missed aosp.
I dont understand why people say the g3 is laggy. There's been post after post on how to get rid of any lag. Turn ART on. Reduce the scale of the animations. Blah blah blah. Read the forums. The phone might not be fast out of the box, but there's simple ways to make it faster. These devs will get the Roms done as long as everyone would search their forums instead of asking the same questions over and over again. Everyone is jumping ship because they don't have the ROM they want. Just be a little more patient. If you wanted a phone that's more on the cutting edge you should have bought or stayed with you nexus phone.
Really tho, with LGs last update, all that lag is literally gone.
Looks like we are supposed to get android lollipop by the end of the year! That's less than 2 months from the release! http://m.gsmarena.com/newscomm-10031.php
Confirmed.

Yay! That is great news! It would be awesome if we got it before most of the other phone manufacturers. Thanks for the update.
This is just another rumor. "An lg rep said we should get it before the end of the year. "

I want to buy a T-Mobile G4. Some questions.

I am planning on going to the T-Mobile store later today to pick up a new G4, but first I wanted to ask some questions.
First, how long do you think I'll be waiting until I can root/flash ROMs/etc? I can live without these things for a while, but not forever!
Second, are the touchscreen and other issues something that I should seriously consider before getting this phone, or are they not that big of a deal? Are you guys all happy with the battery life?
So far I have not found any issues. It's been great on my end. Root will come.. It always does
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
I bought the T-Mobile version from eBay and received it on Saturday. So far no issues. The only gripe I have is slow charging while using the phone, but I just ordered some quick chargers so I should be good.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app
Thus far I am pretty happy with mine. I have noticed that it sometimes interprets a quick swipe as a press (thus opening an app I did not intend) and that, at least on mine, the digitizer may not go all the way to the edge of the screen. The leftmost 1/8" or so of the screen does not appear to register touch input. The right side isn't great either, but does seem better. I have not heard anyone else mention it though, so hopefully it is just my unit.
The only other gripe I have about it for now is that the viewing angle on the screen is pretty narrow. If you aren't looking at the display straight on it tends to get washed out.

You should never get a phone with the hope of it getting root. It's a bad idea. Root is getting harder and harder to achieve especially with dmverity implemented (Variants of the Note 4 after 9 months still do not have root and most likely never will without a bootloader exploit.) Bootloader exploits are almost non existent. Unfortunately the Tmobile version of this phone has a locked bootloader. You have to also think how long you will have the phone. Are you willing to wait half or more of it's usable life for root?
Get a phone with an unlocked bootloader, then you will never have to worry about it. Get the G4 815 for example or a nexus. I'm running 5.1.1 on my note 3 which would be impossible with a locked bootloader. Unlocked bootloaders will give you a much longer lifespan.
Happy with mine as well, although I'm using MetroPCS SIM on my phone.
My advice really, hold on to your Nexus 5. I think its gonna be a while before you see any ROMS or unlock the boot loader. I can't go back go my Nexus 5 cause this phone is awesome. It was an impulse purchase.
If ROMS and having the phone fully unlocked for development, please don't buy it. Also the more I use this phone, the more I believe that CM12.1 even when it does hit the LG G4, it will be not running at its full potential. Some little things that Stock has, better camera app, the tap lock and unlock screen, lock screen quick view, I mean little things that the CM12.1 Rom will be missing unless it has access to all the drivers of the phone.
I've never forgiven LG for what they Did to the G2X. This phone is awesome and will have best experience with the Stock ROM. Its Not AOSP, I wish it was but it won't.
Just wait. The main reason I got it was because removable battery and SD card. Can't wait for ZeroLemon to release the batter for LG G4.

I wanted to buy it through T-Mobile also so I could get it on EIP, but I could just finance it through my parents too.

The stock ROM isn't awful. I came from SlimKat (based on CM) and there are definitely some features that I miss (Long press back to kill & double pressing back to switch the the most recent app mostly). But after installing Nova and reducing the DPI (via ADB) it is very workable. I am still holding out hope for root, but with how great the camera is I am not sure I would flash back to an AOSP ROM.

Touch issues are fixed by the keyboard update. Just be sure to do all the updates available and you should be right as rain there.
Battery life, I get 28+ hours while streaming Spotify through BT speaker for 12 hours, an hour voice calls, as well as a bunch of other goofing around on the device. It's not Note 4 life, but it's far better than any most other phones I've had.
Root/unlock will come, but it could be a while. Honestly, I like the phone well enough stock to not really be all that worried about it. While I'm sure that some devs could make this a bit snappier by debloating it, the stock UI really is pretty snappy and nice.
Camera is also fantastic. Fast action shots come out clear....close up shots have TONS of detail.

I had to pay a whopping $317 just to get my hands on a G4 through tmo's financing department. At least my monthly payments on it are very low.
But it will cost me $322 shipped for that ZenFone 2! I just want to play with it! lol
The phone is great, few things though, the root and subsequently the ROMs will be limited especially when compared to a nexus or even an S6, I have owned every nexus since the Galaxy nexus and I also owned the LG g3, which was a great phone, but development even to this day just never compared and that's mainly because of the carrier specific versions. So if you really like to try all kinds of different ROMs I suggest getting the Nexus 6 although I would say this phone is much better in my opinion but I miss and will continue to miss the variety of ROMs and customizations from my Nexus 6 as well as the screen and front facing speakers. Biggest benefit over the nexus 6 is the camera as well as the size/design/weight. As far as the battery I highly highly suggest using nova launcher instead of the stock LG and disable the LG apps if you can makes the battery life way way better, also get the free battery and SD card that will help to Haha.

Well said sir,
I screwed up and bought a Note 4 because of the deal I was getting ($400 outright), I immediately put away my flashaholics LG G2, and head to XDA only to see the At&t Note 4 has no ROMS, Kernels, or TWRP. Could not be more disappointed, a phone that should be a beast is hampered by no root. I would never touch the G4 or any other phone without full permanent root available in first 90 days of retail release. You are better off waiting to see what the new 2015 Moto X, Nexus ??, and OnePlus 2 will offer.

Marshmallow might be on its way soon.

My g4 has said modified since the day I bought it new. I've done the previous ota updates without issue. I have no idea why as I've never applied root to this phone.

I think the modified status has something to do with some models receiving certain updates at certain times. I have 2 of them and one a few months older and it said modified after an update right after I got it. The newer one doesn't say modified and it came with later software. But I've always taken ota's on the modified one

Ive gone through quite a few G4s and I think some were botched from Verizon after installing their bloat and weren't reverted back to "Official" status. Verizon is aware of the issue and say it is normal.
On the update. The LG G2 got Kitkat before the LG G3 did. Who knows. Maybe they do it as a test to see how it preforms before releasing it to the newer gen.
Verizon G2 also got lollipop before Verizon G3.

Do you happen to remember the time frame between the g2 and the g3 update? Just curious if Verizon keeps it similar.
Verizon really annoys me. Why does it take them so long to roll out updates........are they too caught up trying to figure out how to load more bloatware on the update or something. At this point I'll be on to one of the new phones this year before the update even comes out. I like LG but this experience due to Verizon;s greed is making me consider either a different brand they dont lock down as much or possibly leaving.....which sucks because they do have the best coverage (AT least for me).

AT&T doesn't have it either. The other 2 carriers got 6.0. I would bet Verizon will get 6.0.1
Keep in mind, if a carrier sends out an update for a carrier variation and it has a ton of bugs due to rushing it, LG isn't going to be the one getting all the calls. I'd say that's reason enough to want to make sure it gets released when it's ready.

The Sprint G4 got Marshmallow 2 months ago.
Verizon G4 was supposed to get Marshmallow end of January or 1st week of February according to some reports.
Hopefully next week! Ha
Update doesn't seem to have anything impressive. Wish it would fix my battery life

The list of what I saw is coming in marsh isn't really anything I care about. My battery life is not impressive even with low screen brightness, no sync, no location yada yada. I've been at the game a while I know all the usual tweaks. My old note 2 killed this phone in battery life though I do love it so, I always find myself looking for a charger.

I have 2 G4's in the house and I have gotten as high as 5 1/2 hrs screen on with 38 hrs off charger. Average around 4 1/2 hours with 25 hrs off charger.
I am also always excited for the optimizations, features and fixes with any update.

If you play games a lot that effects battery. I gained an extra hr of battery getting rid of my Facebook app and use Facebook through chrome. Just added a link to my home screen and set up notifications through my email.
If you have the Facebook app and don't have sync set up, it still runs in the background "resource hog". Hangouts, Google music, Google magazine or whatever it's called are always running in the background.
Just because you have nothing syncing doesn't mean that they aren't running in the background.
Ps. I leave sync on for everything. I also always clear my recents when I am done using my phone.
Hopefully this helps.
No fb app, never used it

How good is HTC with updates and support

I'm thinking about getting this phone. How good is HTC when it comes to supports and updates? Are they one of the companies that drops support after a year of device life or do they continue to support it with updates for a few years?
Alos is it easy to update the official ROM with root and s-off or are there weird requirements/steps to update when you're rooted?
Thanks

They are pretty good with updates. I would say Motorola is the fastest followed by htc and then LG and Samsung.
Also depends on what version of the phone you have

They're pretty good with updates. But if you buy unlocked/directly from htc then you get faster updates than through a carrier.
For example, I have the t-mobileUS version and haven't rooted/SOFFed or any of that but it just got updated today with software 1.81 which the unlocked versions got a couple weeks after release. But overall i'd say it didn't take tmobile too long to update it.
HTC seems to be decent with their updates. Especially if you switch your CID to the unlocked version.
Sammy takes way too long with theirs. Gotta tailor that bloat yo.
That being said, I feel like Sense is heavier than reviews initially let on. I had to switch to Nova.
Yes they are good and fast regarding updates.
As for all devices running Android 6 and using block based OTA you got to know some steps to be taken prior to updating, if you're rooted. But that's just the way it is. A little bit of reeding will do just fine
