Startup Failed - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone's rooted, install was success, and subsequent restarts after that was fine. But now I removed some Verizon and LG crapware and after a restart, I get Failed to boot and then it loads the Verizon Flash screen, and occasionally gets to "Android is updating" and loading apps and immediately crashes. Any tips?

Try a factory reset? Root will stay.

Factory reset did not work.

Yes the KDZ is out right now, but I have no idea how to flash it.
Edit, do I go through the process in the root thread but replace the file listed with the kdz?

Ouch...this is why I only disable system apps that I'm not sure about, as opposed to actually removing them.
I'm really not sure what you can do if a factory reset isn't working? Flash back to stock is the only thing I can think of?

Thanks a lot, I'm gonna give this a try. Would i possibly be able to message you on skype if you have it?

Sorry I'm a bit busy at the moment. I've never used that return to stock before anyway. Should be easy enough. it's the only thing I can think of trying.

You're not supposed to conpletely uninstall system apps when on stock rom. This will result in security errors (os checks its system files to see if it's been tampered with) and then refuse to boot. This is not specific to the G4 but almost all LG devices

we should probably start a list of bloat that we can actually uninstall/remove as opposed to simply blocking!

There is a DeBloater thread already here. I don't recall a list of what is OK to remove, but people have been posting their log files or which ones THEY removed.

I'd like to add, that I was able to get back to stock with ease.

How were you able to get back to stock?

I just went through this and I think I figured out which app is causing the constant reboots. Mine was literally rebooting approximately 100 times per day (not exaggerating)...Use Titanium Backup and freeze "Android System Webview" so far that seems to have solve my issue. Hope this helps anyone experiencing this reboot nonsense! Good luck!

So I ran into this same problem and after reading this thread about removing system applications on a stock rom I've learned my lesson. I just finished using a Debloater application on my rooted G4 and everything was operating smoothly while I was using the phone. Initially I only blocked the apps I was focusing on (some 30 of them) but eventually ended up deleting them. I decided to reboot my phone just to cover my bases and now I'm getting a boot screen error underneath the LG symbol that says "Start up failed. Your device didn't start up successfully..." I'm able to boot into the stock recovery and attempted a factory reset to no avail. I also attempted to run USB Debugging but it just reset and went back to the bootloop.
Any advice on how to flash back to stock?
If need be and flashing back to stock isn't necessary I have screenshots of the apps I deleted thanks to the backups created by Gates Jr's Debloater app.

Disregard my previous request for help I was able to follow the KDZ flashing method posted earlier in this thread and now my apps are optimizing great success!

Has anyone else been getting RPC:S-5:AEC-0 errors?
I tired wiping both caches and data from app manager. nothing
Tried wiping cache from recovery. nothing.
tried wiping cache and factory restore. nothing.
After I rooted apps were installing fine but then it just stopped.
Any suggestions? Im gonna try to see if I can find an odin file of it stock.
EDIT: So I used a odin stock image. Still getting error. Any suggestions?
Do tmobile employees check to see if it has been flashed?
Gonna try to go back to store and see if can get it replaced with another. But cant till later. This sucks....
FIX looks like it was on googles servers. Back to normal but this is on stock after I odin, Ill wait on the root to see if others are still getting problems.

I was getting the above error too even after performing a device reset. I reflashed the root a second time and it is working. The only difference is I enabled USB debugging in the Developer options the second time, not sure if that really made a difference though.

Ah wow, I was getting these errors too. Thought it was unrelated and a server side issue (still might be, account specific?)
I'm writing this without reading the suggestions above but, what eventually worked for me (after removing accounts, factory reset, clearing play store data & play framework whether necessary or not)..
Went to Google dashboard (all on PC), made sure device was there, went to play.google.com (computer)-- it errored and froze, logged out, back in, worked eventually, viewed my installed apps (took like 5 minutes to load), started installing apps from there. Once that was working, it worked on my device.
The curious part was, initially, when I'd search for ANY app on play.google.com, it would show no results. Opening in incognito (not signed in), it worked fine.

Yes, had the same problem on my SM-N900T, not on either of the other two [N900/A], it took creating a new google account and also clearing the cache for google services framework, google play and uninstalling the play store update. I had to do this a couple of times, seemed to work better for me without a reboot, but this is the right path for fixing this problem.
Hope this helps,
Bob

it voids your samsung warranty to be exact. if you take it back to tmobile with tmobile warranty, they will still fix/replace hardware issues.
About to root for the simple fact I can not stand the headphones auto adjusting. I need it louder then normal and tired of playing music at maxed settings just to hear music and then a few songs later it acts like its supposed to. (work in a factory)
Anywho: Does this method still give you the option of having auto updates from Tmobile for bug fixes and stuff or do we need to manually keep an eye open for updates?
(coming from Rooted Stock Note 2 thats why im asking. Not big on romming)
Thank you

[Q] Newbie who needs help

Hello everyone, I'm a new member to this site, and I've heard that this site is where i can go to get some answers to problems, that being said, i was hoping y'all can help me with a problem I'm having with my phone.
So I rooted my Sprint LG G2 phone (this is the first time I've ever rooted a phone), then i went to remove some unwanted apps off the phone, then I thought to test and see if I can go back to stock, and without even thinking about the removed apps that i could've restored, I did a factory reset on my phone, it boots up, and I'm still rooted, and the apps that I removed did not come back, so I went to this app call "superSU" and did a full unroot, after that, I restarted my phone, and I still notice that I have root apps installed like "G2 Xsposed, Xposed Installer, Unistall, and Root Browser, so I opened up "Root Checker", it says my device does not have root access, yet I still have G2 Xposed, as well as other root apps I have, so I'm hoping that I can get the apps that came with the phone back (apps like "Clock Widget, Weather Wiget, Music Wiget, Music, SVI settings"), and go back to when I first bought this phone. Is there any simple method I can do to fix these problems with y'all help, I would really appreiate it.

CarrierIQ

Is there a way to remove Carrier IQ from the G3 yet? I've followed a couple ways to do it yet the detectors still show it as not only present but active. I've opted out of the diagnostic collection but also disabled the apks as well as this http://www.reddit.com/r/LGG3/comments/2bkl60/remove_carrier_iq_off_of_lg_g3_all_models/

I am rooted. I've frozen the 3 system management apps and denied them the permissions they need to be able to run but the detectors still say its active. Could the detectors be not working since the phone is so new? I've also frozen LTDDM.apk too .
The detectors probably just search to see if it exists in the phone. So they most likely cannot recognize if it is running or not.

I had Carrier IQ on a TMO Galaxy Light and in addition to freezing the apps with Titanium Backup there are three apk's in System>Priv-App that relate to Carrier IQ - they are:
IQ-tmobile-release-unsigned.signed_TMO.apk
IQToggle.signed_TMO.apk
IQ_OOB_TMO.apk
I renamed them with a .bak extension because I read somewhere that CIQ is still sending information to TMO whether it's frozen or not (and even though T-Mobile claims that they don't use it!
Seems to work because I cannot see them in running apps (using GSAM Pro)

You can opt out of it using the t-mobile app that comes on the phone. Go to the device health and opt to turn it off, then go to advanced tab and shut that off too.

Yes, you can do that, but I'm not sure if that just disables it from sending phone data or stops it from running as well in the background processes.
Some of the CIQ modules are used by TMo for their My Account and other apps on the phone as well, including the device diagnostics reminder, when you call up support, it sends your device info to them on call, etc, unless you uncheck all of those options, not just the CIQ disclaimer and diagnostics.
Those other options are in the TMo My Account app and then you need uncheck all the boxes in its settings for those abilities.
The removal of CIQ takes it away from the phone completely, thus removing the capability of your phone data (including SMS and calls) being sent and the battery and CPU tasking it used.
I actually just found the settings in the My TMobile app. It told me my device was healthy so I was turning off that thing and noticed the more hidden diagnostics option and the other settings.
Back in my OmniRom/Note 2 days, I used delete scripts/zips to automatically clean up after nightly flashes. I created a CIQ_Delete zip using the template from the following thread. Thanks to @RaphaDroid for the template and thanks to @vicvega for the guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575966
This zip deletes the following:
"/system/app/LTDDM.apk",
"/system/priv-app/IQ-tmobile-release-unsigned.signed.apk",
"/system/priv-app/IQToggle_v1.1.3.signed.apk",
"/system/priv-app/IQ_OOB_v1.6_forLG.signed.apk",
"/system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so",
"/data/data/com.carrieriq.tmobile",
"/data/data/com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQOOB",
"/data/data/com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQToggle"
I ran Voodoo CIQ Detector before and after. After a flash in recovery, the detector comes up clean. Nothing detected or running. A perfect score.
Understand, this should only be used after the phone has been setup!! It's my understanding that if the apks are deleted before hand, the setup wizard gets messed up. Probably because of the diagnostic option during setup. Again, this zip should only be used after a dirty flash or after the initial setup on a fresh install. You may want to back up the apks before deleting just in case you want to do a factory reset instead of a clean flash. That way you can get through the initial setup of the phone.
I take no responsibility if you futz up your phone. I just wanted makes things a bit easier by automating the process. You can also follow vivega's guide (linked above) to manually rid yourselves of this nuisance.
Also note: I used the xposed toggle and one time viper4android zips from that same thread. They both work after dirty flashes. Another time saver.
You can honestly just delete the .apk.

Security update with root

So, I'm new to rooting and this is my first Nexus device.
I'm loving it and all the options but now I'm getting a notification to update.
I see all the forums about hooking it up to a computer and using commands to do it all and then rerooting.
I was looking for an easier way.
I bought a Nexus 5 to play with because I liked this one so much and when OTAs came up, it would let me download them and reboot into CWM recovery and ask if I want to flash the ZIP.
This one just boots into TWRP (No CWM for 5x) and does nothing.
I found the update as a zip here:
<https://gist.github.com/jduck/744a6c8a9042e9c792b7>
My question is: can I just download it and use TWRP to flash it or is the sequence of commands on a computer the only way to do it?
Thank you in advance for your help and I apologize for my ignorance.
Gotta start somewhere though, right?
Hi !
I personnaly use NRT from Wugfresh for my Nexus 5x and my Nexus 7 2013, both rooted.
In "model type", select Nexus 5x and your build.
In "Restore/upgrade/downgrade", select "device is on/normal", then click "Flash stock+ unroot".
Select the build you want to install, it can dl and extract it for you, and select "No Wipe Mode" in order to keep your data and apps. (don't try to put your ota file here)
Go through the steps, and in the end, hit "Root" to root again.
I know there are others methods to apply just the OTA with command lines, but I never did it cause I never took the time to learn. I should do it, maybe it's faster with command lines.
Anyway this works, even if it takes a little time, and it is kind of automatic. But I strongly recommend you try both method to find what suits you most. Or wait for someone else to reply so you'll have more points of view !
Have fun with your N5x !
I like the idea of that.
Does it reinstall the superuser app automatically?
If so, which one?
And does it redo custom recovery?
And which one for that?
Sorry for all the questions but I purchased SuperSU and I don't want it to automatically download a different one and have to go through the steps to change a superuser app.

It's not working.
I have Xposed installed.
I unmarked all modules, rebooted, and tried again but to no avail.
Other than Xposed, no mods to the kernel.

Are you using flashfire v0.28?
Xposed modifies the system so while you maybe able to get the ota it can prevent you from installing them even with flashfire.
Go to the flashfire thread and see if this is a problem with the app or because or xposed (most likely answer).
Otherwise find the ota threads and see if you can flash it through recovery (not the N version)
Yeah, it's that version of Flashfire.
I have the update zip but I'm afraid to just flash it.
I was hoping that I'd get some more help here.
Not that I don't appreciate your help.
Thank you, by the way.

Thats at the end of my ability to help you with this particular problem, I have only owned a Nexus for 2 months and they are completely diff to Samsung plus I run pure nexus rom, you may just have to use a computer.
And I really appreciate it.
I'll just use a computer and do it.
Don't want to risk trying to flash the zip and bricking but I'm still curious.
Just not curious enough.
Haha.
Got it.
In case anyone needs to know for themselves, I wanted to post it here.
http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-t...thout-losing-root-no-computer-needed-0168428/
I used that and it worked.
I didn't flash the Xposed zip and had to later on.
Worth it just to add it to the queue to save the time.
Everything else seems to be working fine thus far.
A few settings are changed (TinyCore was turned off and hidden apps in Smart Launcher 3 were unhidden) but that's nothing big.

That is the same manipulation I explained in post 2, but with Flashfire, without using a computer. And full automated, where with nrt you have to factory reset and root later. I'll try it next time ! And yeah, the version of SuperSu is always the latest, and if it is not, it will update via play store (I bought it as well ^^)

This one didn't unroot. Just uninstalled Xposed. Kept all my data and stuff. Apps stayed signed in even. I was afraid because I heard "factory reset" in yours. Or something to that nature. The only thing I'm having problems with now is Tapatalk told me to check my adblock settings and won't load anything. I'll have to look up what's wrong with it. Other than that, it's doing all right.
You are right and wrong, it unroots but reroots in the process. Same I did when I used nrt. And as i didn't wipe data, apps stayed sign in as Well.
But i tried flashfire on my nexus 7 and I it is way more useful and faster than nrt. I am adopting it !

Latest HTC lockscreen update essentially soft bricked my phone.

Hi all,
The latest update has some issues- the OS boots and I am immediately presented with a system.ui has been stopped dialogue. I'm unable to open the app drawer, open an app, open the notification drop-down. The popup appears almost immediately after dismissing. I think the Testers really missed something here.......
I'm going to have to try and locate the previous version and hope I can install it through twrp.
Has anyone else seen this happen?

if you check on apkmirror you'll find the previous versions there =)
This just happened to me.... It's just flashing the HTC 10 stock background over and over and over and phone is heating up very fast. Have tried starting in safe mode, rebooted several times, no joy..... Anyone have any ideas?

Do you encrypt your phone? I feel like the update didnt transfer encryption presets and new app is trying to unlock without decryption codes or something.

I do mate, it's stock still. I didn't have to change anything regarding that, fired up as normal and asked for my PIN to decrypt device.
Just thinking, if you can battle it go and uninstall the update via settings and apps

I'm not running stock. Other people seem to be having similar issues in the Viper Rom discussion.

I was unable to install the apks located there in the traditional way. I tried to install them through TWRP via adb push file.apk /system/app but it didn't work. I'm unaware of how to install APKs outside of the system otherwise? Regardless, downgrading, if this method is viable, didn't work. I had to completely wipe clean and start fresh.

Wipe and start over. I had to. I have work calls that I can't be absent for. Thanks HTC. My phone was out of service for ~3 hours while I figures this out and the phone got completely usable again after flash+settling.

The bug doesn't allow the user to enter any screen. So doing this is not an option

Viper 3.5.0. I haven't upgraded to ANdroid 7.0 for reasons.

Not sure if HTC is to blame, or we...or you being still on marshmallow.
Next time please post in the viper thread, then I would have seen your post much earlier to debug your issue.
we found the issue.
run:
adb shell settings put system tweaks_hquicksettings Tweaks
..and it will be fixed. when you resetup your toggles, don't pick any of the two sync toggles.
I'll create a flashable zip to remove those soon.

You should have been able to fix it without wiping by booting to recovery and dirty flashing the ROM.
EDIT: No, this actually won't work. Sorry
Flashable fix: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7pdthav90nsp6bw/HTC10_3.5.0_Lockscreen_Update_FC_Fix.zip?dl=0

Have this issue on an M8...
Will your fix work on my device too?
Found your solution in the m8 thread...
Thank you sir

Thank You! Flashing this file fixed the issue and saved me a huge headache. Now to take away the HTC Lockscreen app's
"auto update" rights since it clearly can't be trusted.

read the info on our homepage.
Not sure who is to blame, htc or we.
You can install the update, with either the fix installed or the sync toggles removed.
or you dirty flash the fullrom on top, that way the sync toggles stay working.
..what I'm wondering, why so many people are still on marshmallow...

There's a few xposed modules I like.
Is nougat really that big a difference? I have it on my tablet and it's very similar to marshmallow.

guiness is also just a usual beer.
Well I like Marshmallow and Nougat. But I don't like Guinness!
If Guinness had Xposed modules then I'd drink it!
I have this problem on my m8 as well. Unfortunately I was not able to solve this problem with your post. I cannot execute the adb command since adb is telling me that my device is offline (I booted into the OS with the screen going on and off).
I also flashed the zip file, but it didn't work out either. I am not sure which version of viper I have (I assume it's the 6.0.1), so I tried different zips but no success...
Could anyone tell me what I did wrong? I really don't want to do a full reset.

another way would be to go to twrp->advanced->file manager
navigate to /data/app/ and delete the com.htc.lockscreen folder do the same in /data/data
boot up, then go back to recovery and flash the fullrom on top.
if nothing helps, you can do a twrp backup, then clean flash. Now you can restore your apps and data with titanium backup.
Been looking for a solution to this ! My gf phone had the exact same issue, dirty flashed and still no good etc.
I shall try the packages J posted. Thanks so much!
