screen turns off after I turn it on - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a problem where in low-light areas, my screen turns off a second after I turn it on. The only way I can get it to stay on is by plugging the phone in or unplugging it if it's already plugged in. It seems like there's an issue with the light sensor / proximity sensor that helps keep the device off when it's in your pocket. I'd like to fix, disable, or remove this feature. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it? I've encountered it before with the lightflow app where the solution was to remove lightflow, but this is built in which makes it more difficult. Fyi My phone is rooted.

No suggestions for a fix, sorry. I saw behavior like this (screen turning off) when I put mine in an arm band case with clear plastic covering the whole front of the phone. I assume the proximity sensor thought the phone was in a pocket, etc.
The only thing I can think of to simply learn more about the problem is to install CPU-Z and look in the Sensors section to see what the LGE Proximity sensor is reading.
A screen protector that covers the sensors can also cause this.

I get this in low light, too. I have to point it at a light source to get it to turn on. Very aggravating. The longer I use my G4, the more flaws I find.

Do you guys have a tempered glass screen protector on? I have this too, and confirmed this is what it's from. When I had one that didn't directly cover the sensor I had zero issue. It may also be that the sensor isn't that great or polls on too slow of an interval.

Interesting. Does this happen in no-light situations as well? Or is there is a "dead zone" between normal light, and pitch dark?
I tried mine in an almost-fully-dark scenario, in a closet with the door almost fully closed. It turned on normally using both the power button, and double-tapping the screen. Mine is a Verizon model, 610B software.

Thanks @RedOCtobyr for pointing out it could be the screen protector

Yes! I have the tempered glass screen protector. I'm going to remove it now. Besides this whole light sensor issue, I absolutely hate this thing. Compared to a plastic screen protector, I can barely move/drag my finger across the screen because it grips my finger so much. I also feel like it messes up the touch sensitivity so that a lot of lighter touches don't register. Whether that's true or not, the excessive grip this thing has on my fingers and this whole sensor issue is reason enough to tear this piece of crap off.
...
Yep. Light sensor now works in low-light situations but detects when it's being blocked in close proximity. It feels a lot better to touch the screen now as well. Anybody know of a good plastic screen protector to order off Amazon?

I love my tempered glass. Just not ones that cover that silly sensor. I can't say for sure but I feel my G3 glass also covered it without this issue, or at least from what I remember.

how did you over come that issue with the armband. i am having the same problem right now thanks.

Follow steps below to re-calibrate proximity sensor(must with the glass protector is installed and which is sensor covered up)
1. TYPE "277634#*#" in phone dialer. Hidden Menu screen will show up.*
2. Select "Device Test"->"MT", it will show "system will be restarted", then choose OK.*
3. After reboot, GENESIS MiniOS 3.1 screen will show up, press "individual item+power" while power button is pressed.*
4. Next, find "sensor test", enter it(do not block the proximity sensor), the proximity sensor will be automatically calibrated. Then block proximity sensor two times to exit.*
5. Find "Back to the MainList", enter.*
6. Press "Normal boot+power" while power butten is pressed to reboot system, done.
Now the problem should be solved.

Thank you for this. Although on Marshmallow the Hidden menu code has changed. I found this on reddit which helped.
User: Tramagust (I can't link because I have not made enough posts yet )
"It is *#546368#*MODELNUMBER#
So for the international version it is *#546368#*815#
For the Dual sim version it is *#546368#*818#
I assume for the NA version it is *#546368#*811#"
I will see if it makes a difference. Cheers

Proximity Sensor issues

I have been having a issue lately with my proximity sensor. I know that the sensor is supposed to turn off the screen when your ear is near it in a cale, and turn back on when you move the phone away from your ear. But when I make a call without putting the phone to my ear the screen goes off and won't turn back on unless the other person hangs up or I pull the battery. I thought it was because I removed some programs but I flashed a new rom and it didn't fix it.
Here's what I have on my Defy.
2.31 central europe rom
Milestone overclock 1Ghz 60vsel
Z4root
SU
System Recovery
8GB microSD
I heard of trouble with the proximity sensor before. What was triggering it was the phone was set to auto brightness. As soon as it was turned off the problem went away. You didn't say if you have it on auto, but if so, maybe try un-checking it?
I stopped trying to fix it. I think it may have something to do with my invisible shield. Maybe it's not letting enough sunlight in? Idk, but when it does have the issue a finger wipe across were the sensor is fixes it. Strange....

This exactly is the problem. I have motodefy and had the same problem with my phone after i installed the new otterbox case with the screen protector. Searched in vain to calibrate or disable the proximity sensor but in vain. Finally, I peeled of the screen protector from the top and cut it off just under the proximity sensor. This worked and the proximity sensor works like a charm now. It is the screen protector that somehow interferes with the IR.
Another check could be too see if there is a smudge of sunscreen cream on the sensor or not, rubbing against te cheek could easily deposit a layer that can block IR.
MOTODEFY WRITES.

[Q] Issue with Proximity Sensor?

Hi Guys,
Newbie here, wonderful forum and lots of tech stuff, kudos to every one who have contributed.:good:
Facing couple of issues with my NOKIA X, request your help pls!
Issue: Screen goes blank during a call, when using the phone without headset, & doesnt come back on, untill the call is disconnected by the caller at the other end.During this period, when the screen goes blank, it leaves me with no access to the menu, dialpad, etc and the call disconnect button doesnt end the call as well.
1) Turned off proxmity sensor in the "Phone-Settings" menu, it works properly.ie the screen stays "on" during the call and no issues with disconnecting the call, accessing the other dialpad options etc.
2)Also Turned on/off Automatically adjust screen brightness , observed that issue is intermittent.
Any leads would be helpful. Not sure about sensor calibration and tweaks
thanks
K
the screen supposedly to turn off during calls when it detect something near the proximity sensor ie your face when attending calls, this is to preserve power, and it should've come back on again when u bring it far from your face. this is default bahaviour on all smartphones nowadays.
but when it doesn't come back on again after u bring it far from your face after making calls, then thats a problem.
u use screen protector? a thick one and it covering the proximity sensor perhaps? from my experience thick screen protector that covering the sensor can interfere with its sensitivity.
the sensor is on the right side of the nokia logo infront of the phone. look closely and u could see it.

Thank you mdfzhi, i took off the screen guard (yeah it looked unusually thick :silly and it seems to work at the moment, will monitor and see if the issue pops up!:good:
thanks again!!
search for screen protector that doesn't cover the proximity sensor, or if u cant find one that doesn't, cut yourself a hole in place of the sensor.
i'm using a thick anti fingerprint screen protector myself but its not covering the proximity sensor.

Proximity sensor problem (SMMI test fail)

Hi, I've searched this forum and the Internet in general about proximity sensor problems but it seems like basically every problem that someone else had was fixed by removing tempered glass/screen protectors/cases/covers. I'm having a proximity sensor issue and I'm not using any screen protector or case.
This has happened twice now. Once when I was listening to visual voicemail, once when I was making a call. The screen goes dark and will not respond to any wake commands. Every now and then it will turn on for half a second when I hit the power button but then turns back off again. The first time when I was listening to visual voicemail, I had to hard restart the phone by holding volume up and power. The second time during the call, I managed to hang up the call in the half second the screen came back on, which ended the problem.
Right after that, I tested the proximity sensor using the SMMI test (calculator .12345+=). The test makes you put your hand near the sensor, then away, then near again. During the test, the phone immediately sensed my hand near the sensor except that my hand was nowhere near the sensor and there was nothing else near the sensor either.
I did a reboot and ran the test again. This time, the test finished correctly. The phone did not detect my hand until I actually put it near the sensor.
I'm running stock everything except I do have root(ZE551ML). I'm leaning towards this being a hardware problem and I've only had the phone for a week so I'm well within my replace period with Amazon. Is there a solution to this I'm missing or should I just replace? I'm a firm believer in troubleshooting first. Plus, setting up the phone the way I like again will be a huge PITA.
Thanks.
I would replace. It does sound like a hardware issue, and your better off getting a replacement instead of a possible pain for the life of your phone.
I get the same, and the flickering screen happened once to me after I I have just put a tempered glas protector on it ... removed it and so far no problems, but who knows.
I think the SMMI test works correctly the first time you start it, and incorrectly the 2nd, 3rd etc ... dont think it is a hardware error ...
Hi all, i have a zen2 with this same problem, i think doing sensor calibration can resolve the issue... but i canĀ“t found how to do, by code, or by app...
Any body know how to do calibration of sensor aproximty?
Thanks in advanced!
Ps. I dont have screen os glass protector...
i don't having tempered glass or any screen protector. my proximity sensor is not working. Even i checked .12345+= but it gives error in proximity sensor. what to do? plz anyone?
same problem
Hi to everyone,
I have the same problem with the proximity sensor.
After a device reboot, the simmi test work correctly, but after some hours the test fails.
Someone know as I can calibrate the sensor ??
Thanks
I just fixed mine, cause I was having that issue for a LONG time now.
I actually just stuck a piece of paper in front of the light sensor part of the sensor window on the screen. It's the right side of the sensor window.
To be more clear, a while back my screen broke, so I ordered a screen online and changed it. Ever since then my prox. sensor didn't work, so I couldn't use the keypad during calls (the screen would go black).
My screen still isn't attached properly, so it's just being held in by the floppy protective case I have on it right now. This allowed me to pull the screen away from the phone a bit and slide a piece of paper behind it right in front of the light sensor. As soon as I blocked the light sensor then the proximity sensor started reading properly.
I got the idea because I was trying to clean the screen, thinking that it might just be dust blocking it or something. That didn't help, so I tried cleaning the sensor, but had the calibration test running at the time, and it instantly worked!
So I kept playing around with it and noticed that every time I blocked the right side of the sensor, it worked, but as soon as I removed the brush I was using to clean, it stopped working.
I stuck a piece of paper in, and BOOM, worked just fine.
People might want to build on this and maybe try sticking a piece of tape over the right part of the sensor. I haven't tried it, and since I finally have it working now, I really don't want to play with it too much and mess it up.
Hope this helps anyone else having this issue.
Hi all,
I am using zenfone 2 laser z550kl. Screen blackout during call and did not come up till the call is cut. I changed only the cover of proximity sensor and phone is working fine. Change the small rubber covering of sensor and it will work.
Hope this will help all if still using asus phone.

Re-calibrating the proximity sensor.

Hey guys,
The proximity sensor on my G4, for some reason, causes my phone to turn the screen back off immediately when I try to turn it on in the dark. I took it to Verizon, and apparently they see this very frequently. so they would not just give me a new phone. I do have a tempered glass screen protector on my phone, and it covers the whole front, covering the proximity sensor. Is there anything I can do it solve this, it is super annoying? I basically just have to turn off pocket mode, but I cannot see any settings for that on the G4.
I saw another XDA thread that referenced the At&T model of this phone, they have a number to dial that gets to a service menu, that did not work on my Verizon G4.
thanks, any help is appreciated.
The glass screen protectors should have been better designed. The proximity sensor uses infrared (IR). IR radiation doesn't go through glass. So probably no way to fix it other than getting a glass cutter and removing that section of glass.
This one has cutouts for the speaker, sensor and camera...
http://www.amazon.com/Ballistics-An...rint-Explosion-proof-Protection/dp/B00Z6PSATM
Appears the updated version of the Yootech does too... These seems to actually have glass instead of just a entire piece missing above the speaker and sensor.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ZS7GS642JZ5C9GQBRMZ
Well then what it seems like you have here is a proximity sensor that needs calibrating. [emoji6]

Hello to re-calibrate the proximity sensor you must be root and download shorcut master(lite) from playstore open and search for hidden menu and then go to de bottom and click LaunchMiniOS and continue with the original post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63133124&postcount=3

Fingerprint Sensor always shows up when taking device in hand, hasnt been like that?

Hi,
no idea if i just got nervous and did not figure out earlier or it bugs indeed.)
Thing is i put a tempered glass on the screen and all went fine for two days.
As the glas wasnt exactly medium placed i wanted to correct the position, got a dusk between tempered glass and screen, no more wipes at home.
So i used a wipe for glasses to wipe the dusk corn from temeperd glass.
After wiping with that now as soon as i just pick up the device display shows the fingerprint symbol "greyed out/dark mode", note as bright as when using it, tapping on, but in a decent grey/anthrazit.
Wake up on lift was disabled from the beginning, double tap to wake is on as it was, turning off makes no differnce.
So did it "wake up" that way since first day and i just didnt notice it nervous like now or did i mess it up with the wrong wipe on the tempered surface?(
Edit:
think i messed it up, as soon as i hit the power button to lock the device finger rint symbol gets brighter waiting for input.
You gus know a way to cleen the display isded side of tempered glass without interfering then maybe?
