Anyone found a Lollipop ROM that can run popular games, smoothly? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Can someone recommend a Lollipop ROM and kernel combination that can run smoothly just like on KitKat, the following games? : Minion Rush, Vainglory, Spiderman Unlimited. I have contacted their devs and all of them said the same thing: that they are aware of the problem with our device and the fix must come from Google's side.
Maybe some ROM devs fixed something that Google didn't care to fix even with the latest 5.1.1 release.
Thanks in advance!

What exactly is the performance difference of these games between Kitkat and Lollipop?

On KitKat they work great, on Lollipop even with high Overclock on CPU and GPU , they play in slow motion for 5-10 seconds, then 1-2 seconds of smooth gameplay and repeat.

In such cases...i would stick to kitkat..

I've noticed the same. Lollipop on the N7 is a lot jankier. However, I suspect that this was actually a fix to some of the graphical glitches. I know on my N7, you would see crap on the screen for a moment when the keyboard popped back down, etc. It looked a bit like tearing.
I don't really play anything more graphically intense than Temple Run, so I've been fine with it for the most part, but it is definitely noticeable.

Thanks guys ! I thought someone came up with a fix or something (shame on Google). I am sticking with KitKat and with a Lollipop theme . Sucks Google took a crap on our device with untested Lollipop and ignorance with no fix even after people reporting this to them for almost an year.

GS3 frame rate and lag problems with heavy games

So I have had my gs3 I747 for a week now, I previously owned a galaxy s 2 I777. and I am finding that whenever I run a game like nova 3 or asphalt 7 or any other hi Rendering games I have really bad frame rate problems. I thought for sure that the adreno 225 whould at least run those games so I am switching to a I 9300. Has anyone else had these problems.

Not likely you're experiencing these problems on stock ROM.

Im on CM10...
The problems with games are
Asphalt 7 goes slow it isnt smooth it's runs faster on my old ipod touch 4g.. so fail
Real Racing 2 have problems on graphics cut-cars lag slow...
GTA III it's a bit slow just a little bit it stutters some times but it's very good
the only game that works perfect it's shadowgun 0 lag smooth perfect
Riptide also on maximum graphics it's just perfect too so I dont understand why gameloft games have those problems.

Ditto that. Shadowgun & Riptide are smooth as butter here too, on CM10, but Nova3 chugs.
I tried giving KToon's 2.1GHz overclocked kernel a try just for kicks, but no change.
Anyone still on Touchwiz have a problem with Nova3 (or other gameloft game) lag?
I think those games just need an update for better integration..

Not really, unless you are referring to the apps being updated to "play nice" with JB, in which case we probably shouldn't hold our collective breath. That will be a while.
Asphalt7 runs flawlessly on stock ROM but is hit-or-miss with other TW-based ROMs I've run, and is simply a stutering, hacked up mess on CM10-based ROMs I've tried.
I'm still trying to figure out what the deal is here myself.

All I know is nova 3 ran smooth as silk on my i9100, and choppy and crappy on my i747. Stock, TW, cm10, doesn't matter. Runs like absolute poo when the action gets busy.

And the flipside to that coin is that some games ran like crap on ICS Touchwhiz (Restaurant Story, and some others I'm forgetting), but run like butter on CM10.
Resurrected from the grave.
Sorry XDA Mods stupid I know to bring up such an old thread but seems to me that this problem still exists regardless of how bad ass phones get.
I have a T-Mobile GNote 2 and the GS3 both run games horribly with anything based off of AOSP. CM10, 10.1, 10.1.0 Rc1, AOKP, PA, etc...I am still trying to find answer to this, it is litterally Night and Day difference between TWiz roms and AOSP when comes to FPS in games.
Thanks,
Sam

what kernel were you using on each of these? your signature says you're using phablet mode. i'm having a hard time moving past that.
Lol I just call the note 2 a phablet cause that's what it is to me. Phone plus tablet. Phablet.
Now on topic. I've tried several kernels including stock ones on both devices.

[Q] Is my phone slowly deteriorating? (terrible performance)

Hello whoever is reading this,
I'm getting real tired of how slow my phone has consistently been slow for months now. I've tried a bunch of roms and kernels in combination, and while it seems to work smoothly after a clean flash, it slows back down to its usual laggy state within a few days (or even hours!)
I partially blame the age of the phone, as it's old processor probably can't handle all of the customizations being thrown at it that are really being developed for the Nexus 4. But aside from that, everyone in every rom or kernel thread is always raving about how "buttery smooth" or "lightning fast", or whatever else their phone is, claiming performance is awesome. It could just be that all those users are just used to some lag, but I'm really starting to feel like I'm the only one who has such performance issues.
For this reason I'm wondering if it's possible that something hardware-wise might be starting to die, similar to how "cheap memory is killing off Google Nexus 7". Is this possible?
Is there any app that can run hardware tests to check for things like that? I would love to see if my suspicions are correct or totally wrong. Is there anything else I should try?
I'm currently running the latest ak47 rom (AOKP Milestone 2 on top of VANIR (linaro), and using Fancy Kernel. I've found the performance is pretty good compared to other roms I've tried but I still find myself waiting seconds for the app drawer to open, to scroll through pages in the app drawer, etc.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Hmmm... if it is anything related to what was happening with the Nexus 7, then you've probably heard what Android 4.3 did for it. I'm writing this from my Galaxy Nexus, and it hasn't been faster since 4.1; whatever 4.3 did for the Nexus 7 has a similar effect on my GNexus. It took a couple days, but I have my butter back!
Before the update, I was in the same boat as you. Even the keyboard was ridiculously laggy. Now? Buttery. Not Nexus 4 buttery, but buttery.

I didn't hear what 4.3 did, but I gather that it improved the speed? Sweet, maybe I'll try that. My issue is I'm too addicted to AOKP
But I'll have to try a stock 4.3 rom or something and hopefully I'll find the same results as you. Thanks for your input!
My question about an app that runs hardware integrity tests still stands.

No problem! And it provided a lot of behind-the-scenes improvements for graphics processing. It also made FSTRIM turned on by default in the system; it will run whenever the battery is above ~70% and the device is idle. It basically stops the device from needing to perform multiple actions in the storage whenever it needs to read or write. You only notice the effects of it NOT being present over many write cycles, which is why performance may seem to have deteriorated over time.
And yeah, custom just gives you so many choices! But a few days with 4.3 should REALLY ramp up your performance. It takes a little while for FSTRIM to do it's magic. App drawer opens after 0.7 seconds or so, and swiping between pages is quite fluid and responsive.
Glad to be of service! Hope it helps out.

Aside from 4.3, I've found that if you goto Developer options, and lower the Transition, Window, and Animator scales from 1x down to .5x things seem to move more smoothly. Albeit they only reduce animation times, the visual effect may be enough. I also use Nova Prime launcher and turn animations to "Nova" speed. Things like the app drawer open instantly. Absolutely zero lag. What I'm running is in my sig...

This frustrated me for a long time until I came across this app (root needed):
LagFix Free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix&hl=en
XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104326#fm
"Some Android users suffer from poor performance after some days/weeks of heavy usage. This is due to a well-known TRIM bug affecting these devices. The source of the problem is that internal storage is not properly TRIMmed when needed. It is also well-known fact that running fstrim Linux tool from time to time fixes the issue until internal memory runs out of free blocks. LagFix is a user-friendly implementation of fstrim utility. It allows you to select which partitions to trim (you should leave defaults unless you know what you are doing) and run the process easily."
Android 4.3 finally implements this fix, so if you go a 4.3 ROM, you won't need this.
Yep, like they all said, 4.3 fixes that with things like TRIM, and I can attest to that firsthand.

I must say that the phone is faster on 4.3, but my battery life is horrible when comparing to 4.1.1 or even 4.2.2, especially when using the phone.
I don't know if it's true or I'm too bugged about it. Could someone please confirm it to me?

[Q] Laggy phone?

Anyone else feel the phone is rather laggy? Pretty surprising considering the specs. Part of me is hoping it is just the rom?
I have tried the hidden menu tricks to no luck. I also rooted and installed seeder and that doesn't seem to help as well. I feel it is most obvious on the keyboard.

Yes, it's kind of laggy and stuttery in comparison to my previous G2...
This is my biggest concern with this phone, deciding if I will send it back within the next 2 weeks.
This post is laggy
There are a few stutters here and there but generally snappy for me.
Switch to ART. No more lag.
No lag for me. I'm using SwiftKey keyboard and Nova launcher, lag is gone
(+ some kernel tweaks using Trickster mod)
Personally I found that switching to ART didn't make a difference. Final version of ART in Android L will be great, but this is not the one we're having in KitKat.
My previous phone was a S4 GPE.
Questions go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help
There's already thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2752303 where everyone may discuss absence or existence of lags and ways to alleviate them
This phone isn't laggy nor it is super quick... it's adequate. If you want a quick phone go buy a Nexus 5.

Ic, still a long time, but it is coming and it will aid in a better / faster LG G3? Just so i know if i should root mij phone and tweak here nd there. Or if i should just wait for the updates from LG itself to make the phone faster.
The galaxy s5 lags about 2x as much with half the resolution. Every phone lags.
I had a laggy phone when I first bought my LG G3. I took my phone back to the store and was going to return it. the salesman told me to do a factory reset first. I did the factory reset and now my phone is a super phone. No more lag. Faster than my Note III or my Wife's HTC One M8 hands down.
Keep in mind that some of the frame dropping is intentional... It's part of the power management.
I honestly can't wait until some kernel devs get some custom kernels out. Stock kernels tend to be really conservative. On my nexus 5, I'd see better performance and more efficient power management with custom kennels.
So it's a waiting game at this point.

[Q] I love my g3, but I cant stand the lag. What should I do?

I preordered my at&t lg g3 about a month ago with extremely high hopes, and coming from a jailbroken iPhone 5. Compared to it the UI functionality, battery life, screen resolution, openness of android, subpar camera quality, and many other features made me absolutely swoon over how amazing it was compared to that iPhone garbage. I have one really big problem with it though. Straight out of the box when I revived my lg, I have noticed major ui and app lag. Even after a month, the lag has remained persistent, even after many pointless factory reset and screwing around online to try to find a fix for the lag. I did root this phone, but I know good as well that rooting it did not do anything too the device to affect performance. I just installed some xposed modules such as removing the d delay between taking screenshots, the g3 tweaksbox from the play store (which I highly recommend paying 1.50 for three full version, it's Amazing), and getting rid of ads. The funny thing is, I expected my g3 to perform on par with smartphones with identical specifications, (snapdragon 801, krait 400, 3gb ram, 32gb memory). My brother has a galaxy s5, and I've run many tests between my phone and his, like app performance in games, opening/closing apps, antutu benchmarks, overall ui performance, and his phone basically destroys all off those tests against my phone. WHY?? I do realise that yes, the qhd screen does require more raw performance compared to fhd (I think I read somewhere it was 15%?), but most apps aren't optimised for qhd and put themselves to fhd, so why would a game like fruit ninja run at like 20 fps at fhd on my g3, and 60 fps on the s5, which is also rooted with the same amount of modules? And it's not just arcade fruit ninja either, games like temple run 2 lag when you get to a higher score, apps like tinberman open faster on my jailbroke iPhone 5 then my g3, and sometimes simple arcade games like don't touch the spikes have an occasiaonal stutter when you hit a spike, or just playing in general. I have also seen youtube videos of the g3 vs the s5 with opening apps and app performance, and they perform THE SAME! Plus the Ui didn't lag on YouTube either, my Ui scrolling between app pages (that's the Ui I'm mostly talking about, sometimes I also get lag in the stock browser and messaging app, but that's a different story) dips far below 30 fps, I would be able to tell if it was on YouTube because of the frame rate cap. I'm just fed up with it. I truly do love it though, in my opinion in has the best take on 4.4 kitkat I've seen, and coming from ios I still consider this ROM clean. Now for you, the xda forum what do you think I should do about my problem? I do not want any other phone but the g3. Should I unroot and flash stock Rom back onto my device and take it to at&t? I got this phone through the at&t next plan, so I'm not sure how they deal with warranties. Maybe they would give me a new device if I showed them the problems with it? I am running kitkat 4.4.2 if that helps.
Do what I did where.
Install the leaked 10j, remove the stock launcher and use nova. Also I you want it to fly do the high temp pro and thermal daemon mitigation mod. Be happy.
Like tntgdh I also put nova launcher and there is a little trick I use sony z2 live wallpaper from wssabi and set it to 60FPS. Phone is extra smooth. Under transittion effect od home screen i choose none or you can say generic google.

You should notice smaller app load times, faster boot ups, and better battery if you switch to ART. However, Xposed currently doesn't support it, so you would have to disable it until Android L came along.

Although there are many people out there who swear switching to ART does very little in terms of performance, I think it helps ALOT. Once i switched to ART i noticed the little stutters and little lags go away. My phone feels buttery smooth now. I also use nova launcher which is my launcher of choice, and it also performs buttery. I am very satisfied with its performance. Some may say I am just experiencing a placebo effect, but I think not.

Oh yeah it makes a difference for me too. I Decided to try Xposed after I changed to arp, so it reverted to dalvik. What a difference! I instantly noticed. So I ditched Xposed for now until it had support for arp.
One major thing was to install the 10j.
If you want something that will help a lot.. Install the 10j and use arp... Then if you wanna go further install nova and do the thermal mods.

I dont think there is a real understanding here, either a rom is stock modified (no matter how modified) or aosp based. aosp is currently being worked on so all there is stock based.

I am kind of in the same boat
Master Zen and Freeza are the other two note users here that I really followed through the Note 2/3
Freeza was a lifesaver for extracting basebands and posting them Day 1 as well as custom kernels and Zen made really good work of stock roms with simple themes.
The note 2 had instant support from the community
The Note 3 took a few months to get going..
Note 4 is at a much slower pace.. but it may have to do with the release schedule and peoples upgrades/contracts.
I actually made my own version of the stock rom.but its still slow
I ported all of my apps and took some tweaks from my note 2 and note 3 and moved them over to the Note 4 with Titanium
Wanam Xposed really has everything I needed for interface adjustments.. I run my phone at 320 pixel density ( as opposed to stock 480)
so its visually pleasing but I have so many apps i moved over Im not sure if the issues im having now are related to one of those tweaks or the phone itself.
This thing is just a lagfest... the keyboard - you hit the back button and you dont know if it accepted the command.. and you end up erasing half a paragraph, Something in touchwiz is also causing an issue with the app window and switching between apps
Ive done all the silly tweaks like window animation, gutted Svoice ( which will cause popup issues with the camera when you try to take a selfie since it loads svoice for listening to verbal commands...
Im ready to jump to CM12 honestly..
Note 3- camera a little better- performance great
Note 4- camera finally good- Performance.. OK despite being spec'd much higher..
Its sad.. but hang in there more options will be around soon- Nobody wants to dump 100s of hours into building the perfect rom on a platform that is at the end of its cycle- When android 5.0/ 5.01 official comes out from Samsung you will see a LOT MORE activity because thats what everyone is waiting for to start building on to be honest. ( And CM is nice, but we always lose features and almost every time theres either an issue with the camera or lockscreen, or texting/mms)
Wait another 2 months, or take your chances with some of the ports and new guys roms.. Anything at this point is better than the stock heap of garbage samsung touchwiz is at its current state
..

Either you can use Titanium backup or you can use a few different roms available that come pre-debloated!
So I would like to retract my issues with performance and lag.
I was not aware that Xposed had an issue that caused lag spikes.

Its sad.. but hang in there more options will be around soon- Nobody wants to dump 100s of hours into building the perfect rom on a platform that is at the end of its cycle- When android 5.0/ 5.01 official comes out from Samsung you will see a LOT MORE activity because thats what everyone is waiting for to start building on to be honest.

I agree with you on this. But even with the lack of custom roms, I really have no complaints with a custom stock rom because the phone is great right out of the box. So until 5.0 comes out I really don't see investing a lot of time and effort into making a radical custom rom with 4.4.4. and then having to turn around and start all over again when 5.0 finally releases. With this said, this is the first phone that I really don't feel the need for a wildly custom rom that "adds features". Other than performance/battery tweaks, I'm perfectly fine with it the way it is. Maybe this is because I've been messing with this stuff for so long and seen so many custom roms/projects over the years with several different devices, that I finally feel content with a device without feeling the need for a custom rom. Going with an AOSP/CM based rom pretty much cripples all of the built in TW features and that's the whole point of buying a Galaxy device with a Spen and all of it's features. Let's just see what happens when 5.0 comes out.

There is.. many roms that have xposed built in will advertise "Xposed-proof" or "Xposed bug fixed"
I had no idea what they were talking about at first until i realized there was an issue with it causing lag with one of the versions

Great post, I have same sentiments and feedback.. I went back to Nexus 6 but still have hope for the Note 4. COME ON SAMSUNG!! Release the lollipop update already!!
More than the lagginess of the rom even on debloated rom (compared to nexus 6) my main gripe/thing I cant stand at all is the lack of dark themes.
Not sure how you all could be so excited about lollipop when Xposed won't work on it...

Old post... yes, but in case any others stumble upon this while looking up stuff for their note 4's... xposed works fine with Lollipop Android. I run my Sprint Note 4 with the Note5 hybrid ROM with the Xposed Framework version 86.0 (custom build by wanam / 20160709) and have no issues.
