Unlock bootloader update? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone aware of any status on unlocking the bootloader for Verizon, Sprint etc? Is anyone working on accomplishing this?

Not to criticize you specifically because you're not the only person who's done this, but these kind of threads are pointless.
With a flagship device like the G4, there's always people working on a bootloader unlock for all the major carriers. The hackers/dev teams responsible generally don't share their progress with the public.
So yes, it's being worked on. And no you're likely not going to get any progress updates until a release/method randomly drops one day. And when it does I'm sure you'll hear about it.

Looks like there is some possible progress over in this Verizon G4 thread

So the devs ditched their work on unlocking bootloaders for all???

Interesting discovery, but doesn't seem to
be leading to an unlocked bootloader anytime soon.

Probably not, but they haven't been posting around here lately. Probably too busy spending all that sweet booty from getting root.

Newbie HTC One question: looking to upgrade but can I root?

I have a Galaxy S3 and I'm looking at the HTC One as an upgrade. However, not being able to root is a deal breaker for me (i am already struggling with being unable to swap batteries). I hate to ask such a newbie question, but I can't seem to figure out the answer from my initial search of the forums. Looks like the latest firmware locks the phone down. Is that correct?
Thanks for the help!
I don't know Verizon 's circumstances but every other one is root available 100%

I am actually on VZ, but I can't imagine them doing anything unique. Thanks!
Go to the General forum. The entire thing is the community discussing how this phone is locked down. Verizon forced HTC to block VZW Ones from bootloader unlocking via HTCdev.
The dev community is working on it, though, and there's at least one user offering a send-away unlocking service.

[Q] Is the VZW G4 rootable/BL unlockable?

Anyone who can answer this for me? Didn't see any other threads for it.

Oh sh**, so do you think there will most definitely be a BL unlock in the coming weeks/months? By looks of that I can definitely say yes to root, but BL looks pretty solid too.

I can't answer that one, only time will tell. I came from Samsung so I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to bootloader unlocking. I would love to see it though.

I'd be coming from Samsung too then, have a S6 and the battery bug has totally ruined it for me. I also have a $520 offer out on a G4 brand new in box right now, keeping my fingers crossed its accepted before someone else buys it haha. The root + potential of a BL unlock on the way definitely gave me the extra push I needed besides SD card and extra batteries!
I don't think any of the LGs ever were Bootloader unlocked. ALTHOUGH we just used hacks to bypass the lock and install a custom recovery. I had a Verizon G2 and rooting was pretty straight up, but Lollipop is a tough cookie to crack.
Fortunately the Stock LG roms are pretty slim and work very well. I used Stock LG on the G2 the entire 2 years. It was just super stable and had features that you couldn't find anywhere else.
No Root or BL access as of yet. All of our Devs have Root Access, it is just a matter of them attempting to package it in a safe and noob friendly process before the gen. population gets their hands on it, so just be patient and remember, Rome was not built in a day.

What is taking so long for the bootloader to be unlocked?

Its been like almost 4 months since this phone was out and still no success? What could be taking so long? Also i have this version just incase i missed out on something

I actually did try with my one and it said it doesnt support the US variant and I thought it was the European version.
Really!!???
First people were complaining about how long root was taking and started saying it's never going to come out. Then it ends up coming out 1 month earlier than it did with the G3.
Now bootloader. Patience!!!
Devs don't get paid for this stuff, lot of them do it on their own spare time.
Week and a half until the Moto X Pure, and LG Nexus 5 (2015) probably won't be too far behind.

I know it's not the case for all devs, but some of them make really good money doing this in their spare time.
Honestly I don't think the G4 is that popular which won't attract that many talented devs that can decode LG's security boot encription. Those who can crack the code probaby don't sit around playing with cell phones anyways.

Any evidence to back up your claims?
Then define "really good money" as both a lump sum for say unlocking a boot loader and for payment per hour as that may mean something different to you than other people.
To be honest depending on how valuable your time is, it may be cheaper to purchase a EUR open LG G4...I'm tempted to do so and give my TWN version to my GF who wouldn't need things like root or unlocked boot loaders...but also need to see if it's worth it. Currently there is only one custom kernel, and I'm not that interested in that, and honestly that's the only thing I'd use the unlocked boot loader for.
Before this gets out of control, let me just say that none of the LG bootloaders on previous models were ever unlocked. The G2 was pretty popular and still has a locked bootloader. I haven't even heard of any recent LG devices to get unlocked bootloaders and very surprised that the G4 international variant even has this option.
So the question "why don't we have unlocked bootloaders" is an unrealitic question based on prior history.
The REAL question, would be "now that we have root, is there any discussion or development in having a custom recovery or bootloader bypass?"
I also want to ADD that NONE of the LOLLIPOP firmwares have been hacked (as far as I know). Both the G2 and G3 required to use a KitKat aboot partition setup that allowed us to install custom recoveries and such.
Personally, if I were a developer, I would delay the release a week for every one of these posts found for the phone Im unlocking the bootloader for.
Id even make a notice when a post like this would pop up, showing proof that Im delaying the unlocked bootloader release, just to piss off the impatient people, which, typically, are the ones least capable of doing it themselves.

Locked bootloader

I think one of the best things that we all love about android is ability to change your phone and add what you want via root. My question is this, if the future of android is to lock all bootloaders, why should we stay with android and not get an I phone? If I can't get viper4android I'm not sure if I'm gonna stay with android. What are your thoughts?

There are only 2 types of Android customizers, people who can customize without root and bad customizers
If u really like a locked down device get an iphone. Last jailbreak took 11 months to get. Stock icons sucks on ios. At least u have options with android without root.

Because an iPhone is more locked down than an Android. It would be really dumb to downgrade to iOS just because your Android has a locked bootloader... That's just like replacing your gaming PC with a cheap Android tablet just because you don't like the new Ubuntu update.

Everyone that has a iPhone isn't dumb. It's not about which OS is the best because they both have their plus and minus. The thing is that android is starting to lock their phones down just like Apple. The options that we all love about android are starting to fade (bootloader, removable battery, sd card). So if this keeps going on, android will be very similar to Apple, which is something none of us want.

I didn't *say* anything about the intelligence of Apple users, nor did I really talk crap about iOS. All I said was switching to an OS which is *even more* locked down, just because the bootloader is locked, is a dumb decision. Like, you're angry that Android is locked down, so in retaliation you switch to something more locked down. Really??

If they're both locked down more people will move to whichever OS they like because they are becoming more and more similar. You're dumd if you think that's not going to happen for whatever reason that a person chooses is best for them, and not what you think is the best decision. Wow!!!

Folks, cut it out. This conversion can't be constructive and inflammatory at the same time. Please be respectful and let's have a mature discussion about this.
That being said, I thought I saw someone who said they got in touch with a Google rep who said the bootloader will unlocked, at least from the Play Store. Take it with a grain of salt, since not all manufacturers' reps know the difference between a bootloader and carrier locks, but this is Google we're talking about.
Now I'm not the most savy on bootloaders, more just an open source dev. But the nexus 6 I got from a verizon store had a locked boot loader. The nexus 6p I had for a short time had a locked boot loader. But they were unlocked fairly easily. From what I have always seem every phone had a locked boot loader that requires it to be unlocked to allow access and write to protected partitions. But the issue that I know is when in gets encrypted is when the issue arises. Without getting the verizon models in hand by a dev, we don't currently know if it is encrypted yet, or has this already been discovered? I highly doubt any verizon rep on the phone or on a chat will know the answer to that question. I believe the htc 10 on verizon has an encrypted bootloader, but it also had the htc bootloader, I assume the pixel is going to have the google boot loader. I just personally wanted to clarify it for my self if my understanding is correct, from someone who has a better grasp on this.

The fact that this guy has the phone already makes me think he's unique. Possibly a developer that 1) already unlocked it and just put everything back in just to do an unboxing video or 2) it came that way to him since he is or may be a developer or reviewer.
Either way it's promising that it can be unlocked. All the Nexus phones came locked but were easily unlocked. The Verizon one worries me, but I imagine if it's the exact same model as the Google store version, it shouldn't be hard to get it unlocked by 3rd party means. I'm just waiting on full confirmation before I make my purchase.
Thanks for the video.

Don't even bother calling Verizon to ask. They will emphatically say "yes it absolutely comes unlocked!" In reality they are referring to the carrier lock, not bootloader. They have no clue on bootloaders.

Im with you , I always rooted my devices since I had a G1 (HTC Dream). Since Pie was released, and custom launchers are so good these days, I haven't bothered with any of my devices
....I do miss being able to remove system apps though (truly remove them) ahhh memories of the days when CyanogenMod was what a person would do immediately after getting a new device ....
I don't miss the headaches , the bugs, the constant flashing new roms, the constant clockworkmod/TWRP backups and restores ...
Android is now so polished that I honestly see no need for root anymore
The only need for root I have is getting my Proxmark to work with my phone.
I miss gravity box that's it
root is so much funner though lol

Is this still the only way to root on the U.S. variants? I have seen this floating around for some time and while I have nothing but respect for the developer of this method, I have never paid for unlocking or root and don't want to begin. I would like root, but my desire is not so strong so as to pay $100 to obtain it.
My last rooting experience was with the ENG kernel on my S7 Edge. It sucked. LOL. I know what you've linked isn't a root service but an unlock, however after growing tired of the instability with the ENG kernel I eventually went stock. So now I've been without root for a couple years and have learned to live with it, which is why I don't really want to pay. If that's the only way, though, so be it.
