gpl | abyss kernel 7.10 | cm-14.x - ONE Original Android Development

Hi bacon people!
This is my modified kernel with some kernel optimizations and some compiler optimizations.
The goal of abyss is to achieve improved performance/battery without the cost of stability.
I will not be overhauling this project with changes that are not logical to add.
This kernel should work on the latest 7.x.x roms like CyanogenMod and any other AOSP based rom.
It will not work with "CAF" based roms (any roms using Sultanxda trees).
It will not work with Omni based roms either (any roms using Omni trees).
It will not work with AOSParadox based roms too.
How does one achieve this?
- build kernel with an optimized toolchain
- use compiler optimization flags (experimental)
- remove redundant code
- improve existing code with more efficient code
- reduce/increase speed of timers (depends on what type of function)
- etc. (most are not easy to explain)
Is there actually a performance improvement?
With all the changes added up, there should be. Whether or not one notices the difference is another thing.
Personally, I do feel the performance difference on my Moto G 2013; it is easier to notice the difference with lower level specs..
For those interested in how the kernel optimizations will benefit/work, please look at my github source and read the commit messages.
For those interested in how the compiler optimizations/hacks will benefit/work, please look at this article.

I do not mind if there's some non-development/off-topic discussion here, just no discussion about other works that is nowhere near related to mine.
Also, please refrain from comparing works here; it really kills the spirit of development. Go do that in some other thread.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is this a custom kernel?
I was asked this question once, and it posed as a real good question. I do not consider abyss to be a "custom kernel" per se, but more so as a modified kernel. The patches and features that go into this kernel do not make it customizable. What they do is improve what has already been implemented. It is like swapping a car's engine for a better one rather than just adding LED flooring lights and fancy car mats.
Can you add [this] and [that] feature?
Something I pride myself with this kernel is that it does not have a bunch of random, useless features or patches mashed into it. Everything put into this kernel is thought out well and tested. I see a lot of works being made popular because it has [this] and [that] feature when really, it's nothing revolutionary. As a matter of fact, most things added to any kernel will not make it 5x better than any other kernel. Most of the time, simple is better; and in this case it definitely is!

Main Patches and Features:
- updated security patches (dirty cow vulnerability resolved)
- updated sched drivers
- KCAL Control Driver
- backported random from Linux 3.16+
- kexec hardboot patch for Multirom
- Abyss Optimizations (compiler)
- disabled debugging for more performance throughout
- lots of patches for better performance here and there... too many to list
- simplified thermal driver (more aggressive while maintaining performance)
- USB Force Fast Charge
- Android N ready!
How to install:
Place zip on to your internal storage
Place current ROM zip on to your storage
Boot into TWRP recovery
(If you're coming from a different kernel, dirty flash current ROM)
Flash kernel zip
Reboot

@YoshiShaPow I think you should just call it "Egg kernel" given that you're a Yoshi

Isn't it the same kernel which you have implemented in your latest CAF build?

Which toolchain are you using? UBERTC 5.2.1?

@YoshiShaPow
HEY!
Glad you decided to come on back! Just FYI, I was able to get CAF working with AnyKernel. I will make sure my source is up to date so you can use if you want. Regardless glad you decided to take a stab at kernel building again and can't wait to see what you cook up!

@YoshiShaPow how about the names "eggs and bacon"
Anyways if you need an Legendary Eagle friend, you can que with me and my buds for a 4-5 man crew ;D

One request bro, can you add Boeffla's capacitive keys backlight control? Also, are you planning to add a custom UKM for your kernel or are you only planning kernel auditor support?

Short Credit list:
(more people here:Github)
Armani Devs (@jsevi83 and @Kra1o5) for initial device bring-up
Anybody who has unselfishly helped me in anyway(through donations, testing, promotions and moral support)
Short Feature list:
(Full feature list including Developmental Goals are on Github)
Basic Governors(I won't add Ripoffs, Ondemand is in continuous development to give you a balance between savings and performance)
Built using my own GCC 4.8.x/4.9.x/5.1.x Toolchain built across the standards of Google's own Toolchain..
Simple and no fancy stuff..(more does not guarantee it's better)
Uses a simple free and user friendly application called Synapse by @AndreiLux for configuration purposes(slightly adding more functionality)
A Few Notes:
Be advised that this kernel is best used "As is" i do want to prohibit the use of scripts that they say "enhances performance and battery" just use the kernel as it is..everything is managed automatically by the kernel and rest assured continuous innovations are en-route.
Supporters:
I would like to express my sincerest gratitude by saying thank you and a continued commitment to get things better on this device via what i do best..kernels..
And these individuals who are generously helping me fund the device, deserve the same credit for that whole-hearted effort in doing so..(they come in no particular order)

CyanogenMod 11(Stable)
PAC ROM(Stable)
CR Droid(Stable)
Carbon(Stable as reported by one User and Tester)
Any ROM based on Armani Devs sources

Yeah for sure these guys are gonna love it.. they are in for one hell of a ride..
EDIT: wake gestures is a WIP as i am trying to clean some stuff out..all your other requests like Voltage control are WIP(we have already have this working on Desire 816 test kernel just a few minor stuff needs to be worked out..also this change needs a DT edit and unfortunately using the DT's supplied by Xiaomi, the device does not bootup..without the proper DT's the voltage control won't work unless someone would like to collaborate with me on this..the same thing goes for GPU and CPU Overclocking..)

Yeah, I know and already read the whole thing but I also didn't see the Governor and Schedulers there. It's just that some people would really appreciate to see what they are dealing with first hand. Links to changelog is also good just for others to keep on tabs. You also have that "Features:" thingy so I thought you would put something there.

well its based on Xiaomi's official source..if you can provide me stock boot.img from stock ROM i can repack this build to be able to boot on Stock ROM(MIUI) which i would love too..
OR
Will do an anykernel Installer next update which might come in a few days time( i have to release to my M7 and M4 threads )..
EDIT: I am also looking for a small group of testers.. both for MIUI stock ROM and AOSP based ROM's..
I've been using @kairi_zeroblade's Xceed kernel on the HTC m7. His custom hot plug work, ondemand CPU governor refinements and other coding efforts quite simply deliver the best battery life, screen-on-time, and smoothest performance that I've ever experienced on this phone.
This is a perfectionist developer who's going way beyond the simple code collecting, tweaking and compiling that goes into so many of the "custom" kernels we find on XDA.
Enjoy!

Edit: Yeah do it as Anykernel 2.0 because that would be more friendlier since Redmi 1S is going to get multiple versions of Android.
I like your style Dude, simple kernel. I too don't care, really for many features too as long as I get Interactive, SIO, Voltage Control and msm_hotplug or intelli-plug (either of the two would do for me).

F.A.Q. - Read this before complaining!
1. This kernel works on Y or X rom?
A: It is compatible with almost all Kitkat ROMs and i have persnally tested it on CM11 & Carbon ROM only and users on other ROM are on their own risk and complaining about the Kernel will not be tolerated..!
2. OMG Battery Sucks...!
A: As you can imagine I don't build kernels to decrease battery life. All the battery life problems come from your apps, either Facebook, or Maps, or some Location Service being enabled etc etc. Check your damn wakelocks and fix them, the kernel is not responsible for them.
3. How do I flash this?
A: Reading the OP, theres a reason why I added instructions on it.
4. Which App is the best for Controlling the Kernel?
A: Their are many apps in the Play Store but i personally recommend TricksterMOD or FauxClock rest its on you whether which you find most comfortable.
5. Getting Random reboots..! Any Help
A: I don't answer to problems without a log. The log file is in /proc/last_kmsg. Paste it on pastie.org and link it on your post. Logcats are useless for Kernel purposes, don't bother posting them.
6. OP is arrogant, I'm gonna call the Internet Police?
A: Deal with it.
7. Which Settings are best for XYZ ROM and XYZ thing..!
A: THe Default settings of the Kernel are the best and Balanced one but you can ask other users on the thread or can discuss which settings are the best..!
8. XYZ Feature doen't work in this Kernel on XYZ ROM..! You suckass, fix it..!
A: I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for a fix, I can tell you I don't have the solution. If you leave now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I ignore you.
9. My Kernel settings are not sticking and i have tried almost all the fu**in apps and none works..!
A: Have you installed busybox ? No? Then kindly install it and not every busybox installation is 100% complete so kindly keep that in mind before posting and beating a dead horse in the thread...!

4.10 toolchain is not the latest..GCC 4.10 was discontinued..and was re-initialized as GCC 5.0..
you're misleading..lol
proof: you can scan all branches if there was a 4.10 that went to production/development..
I am building my own toolchains for my projects and thats where my GCC builds come from with patches from Google's repo..
that's a bad habit of "copy pasting" ..moreover looking at your git..you copied my changes on thermal without even crediting me for adapting it to Armani..its not the original Thermal from Franco anymore as i made the adaptation..anyways..congrats..

This is a slightly modified kernel based off of cm's new d851 kernel rebase: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_lge_g3/tree/cm-13.0
I wanted to build something that's basic and reliable. If you're looking for a highly modified kernel I recommend Eliminater74's Nebula Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/kernel-nebulakernel-rev6-5-build20150715-t3161768
INSTALLATION
-------------------------
1. Make sure you know what your doing. If you're a noob then don't install this. I will not answer questions on how to install or fix your phone if you mess it up. Always backup first!
2. boot up into recovery.
3. flash the kernel zipped file.
4. Wipe cache.
5. Reboot.

Thank you for all your hard work and sharing your work
Good to see you expanding your horizons and delving into new challenges
If you guys use either kernel in any ROMs not listed just let me know and I'll add it to the compatibility list. If you're using the test kernel I just need to know if you get any kernel panics or boot loops. Thanks guys!
Going to put on the Pandas phone.. Evan after (clean) install of the new version he is crashing to blue/green screen.

cm-Resurrection_Remix_LP_v5.3.1-20150122-d851.zip
Just installed stable and going to see what happens.
Stable is smooth and fast, great battery life.
Thanks to tootsiepop kernel and its author.
Currently running BlissPop 1/22 build with the experimental kernel. Flashed this morning before work so I haven't used my phone much since I flashed. I also have not had a chance to browse the thread regarding my issues. So for now....
First Impression - Smoooooth and quick just like Bliss should be.
Issue 1 - I had one kernel panic "BSOD" right before work. At the time I was playing with the Walkman music player port, which has been giving me issues. So it may have nothing to do with the ROM or kernel.
Issue 2 - my lg headset connects, but no music plays through the earphones.
Overall - VERY NICE WORK. No complaints at all, because I believe my issues are either my own fault or a CM issue.
Thanks for the upload aclegg
The stable and test kernel has been updated. Now on the test kernel we're testing the multirom patch. Remember to download the stable kernel in case the test kernel crashes!
I implemented the kexec patch in the new test build, but multirom says its not in the kernel. It could be because the kernel optimization levels are too high. Would you want to sacrifice smoothness for multirom support? I was able to get multirom working using a kitkat ROM as my primary with the skin kernel. And bliss pop is running with the speedy kernel as the second ROM just fine.

I do not use multirom. Can you make a full featured version without multirom support and other stripped to support it?

I'm might not support multirom. The whole point of this kernel is to increase optimization without losing stability. Stripping out the optimizations just to add multirom would contradict why I decided to work on this kernel to begin with.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference in your builds and dr87's builds?
dr87 builds with everything as close to stock Euphoria as he can. If you are a fan of his old Mahdi ROM builds, then you would really enjoy his builds. My builds use different toolchains, optimizations, and my kernel. Neither version is better than the other. I reccomend you give them both a whirl before settling down for one.
What kernels can I flash on this?
The ROM is using CAF sources, which means you cannot flash the CM12 versions of B14CKB1RD or Render's CM12 kernel. Current options are Llama kernel or stick with stock.
How do I flash this?
If you are coming from an older build:
Clean flash (/data, /system, /cache and dalvik, but NOT internal storage) -> Flash ROM -> Flash GApps -> Reboot
If this is the first time using any CAF based ROM (First time using Euphoria):
Clean flash (/data, /system, /cache and dalvik, but NOT internal storage) -> Flash LP bootstack -> Flash ROM -> Flash GApps -> Reboot!
Great job! I've been stalking you and a few others for a while now on github.
Is the GPS working without a stock LP base now? Do you have hangouts?

GPS is working. Only thing that shouldn't be working is USB-OTG. And you can find my Google+ profile through my XDA profile, or just look at the G2 section of the Euphoria-OS G+ page.
Also to others, VS980 build coming up tomorrow. Still waiting on bootstack for F320 before I put a build out for it, and waiting on actual Lollipop for D803 and LS980.
What does mean CAF based kernel? No need for JB bootloader a better battery/performance?? based on official LP kernel?
Flashing, will report.
Check dem Hangouts!
Gonna hose the vs980 eh Tyler!?
Just breaking your stones lol. Glad to see you getting back into the seat.
If you or zac need a vs980 tester let me know
Um.. Sprint lollipop has been released along with kernel code....

Will be adding to FAQ soon, but it stands for Code Aurora Forums, and CAF usually tends to use the latest things. The kernel is LP-based so you will NOT be able to flash the CM12 Render or B14CKB1RD. You should still be on the JB bootloader however.

Yep! And glad to see you back as well. Won't be needing any other testers unless I'm playing with kernel things, which when Render drops his CAF sources, I'll start building a standalone as well for other ROMs that switch over to the CAF base.

Thanks for sharing with us @tsunamical! One question, after flashing the lollipop bootstack, if we want to go back to another rom, would we need to reflash the jb bootstack first? If we have a backup through twrp, would it restore the jb bootstack during restore?

Depends on your device. The vs980 for example, can use the KitKat bootstack minus the radio and bootloader.
If you need to use it now, then yes, you would need to revert as the 5.0 radio shouldn't work with 4.2 kernel based roms
Twrp will be iffy with restores. Blastigator did add the option to save modem and sensor info in twrp with backups if you select it, I've not tested it myself, but on paper it should.
Edit: it would not save the bootstack

Yeah - for me it's stuck at "starting apps" and the setup menu shows behind the popup, then crashes. Any way we could get a hotfix?
If i were to roll back - should I be using a jellybean or kitkat bootstack? or can i just leave as is for other roms such as Rashed97s CM12?
F320 can test .Are uploading?

It should optimize apps properly, but the bug totally screws SystemUI over, no hotfix since it was a library issue, just going to recompile and release a build tomorrow. I would go back to the JB bootstack until tomorrow unless you had a nandroid, and if you're using one of Rashed's CAF builds then yes you can leave it, but if it isn't explicitly labelled CAF, then no, reflash JB bootstack.

WELCOME TO ELITE KERNELS!
Our main goal behind building these kernels is to create a setup that gives a balance between performance and battery life without straying too far from stock. We like to have our cake and eat it too. Our kernels include performance, memory, and scheduling tweaks that enables your phone to come to the party when you are hammering down on it and need performance ASAP, and to go to sleep faster than a basset hound on a warm summer day. We put these kernels together mainly for our own use; so what we release is what we personally use. We hope you enjoy them too!

Special Instructions for EAS use:
You must manually rename the texfat.ko file to texfat.ko.bak. It is located in system/lib/modules. If you do not rename this, your device will bootloop. Renaming this also affects the users who have an sd-card that is formatted as exfat. If you wish to use an sd-card with the EAS kernel, you must have a card that is formatted in a different format.
IMPORTANT: Once the phone is booted, you will have to change to the sched gov via a kernel app. If you do not, the cores will be stuck at max freq.
If you do not like the EAS kernel, to go back you must manually rename the textfat.ko.bak to textfat.ko, restore the boot img that came with the ROM you are on, and the new installer above will take care of the rest of the changes that were made for EAS.
The reason I did not automate the process of renaming the module is to make my users aware of the issue with the exfat sdcards. An alternative to make the exfat cards work is being researched.
