Coming from the Vibrant and G2X, I use to flash roms about once or twice, maybe more, a day! With this phone, I just think it's perfect the way it is. I want to run the OS the way Google intended without much intervention. I tried the HD rom last night and it looked and felt the same as the stock rom, so I quickly switched back. No offense to Mike, but if I'm gonna have something so similar to stock, might as well have stock with official support.
Anyone doing the same?

i refuse to stick with stock anything regardless of how 'good' it may be. even with this Nexus, i didn't like stock.
i want to be able to change things however i want them, including overclock/undervolt/etc...
the last time i stuck with 'stock' was probably when i had the original RAZR back in the day(that and the Rezound as i believe they're still waiting on root for that thing)
you'd be surprised what kind of battery life you get with a custom rom and kernel. it's a significant upgrade. that fact alone justifies going custom

I'm going to wait until the custom roms and kernels establish themselves before I go with a non-stock build. I will leave stock sooner or later though for sure.

I'm also going to be ruining rooted in stock room.
It is been a very long time since I don't see a clean stable room. Number one priority today is to support as many devices as possible, quality and stability comes last. Sad.

How could u go from flashing multi roms a day then out of all the phones u choose not do it with the nexus that's just unheard of
I used to flash a lot of roms on my old phone, trying to stick to stock on this one. I keep getting tempted though.. especially as I haven't had the 4.0.2 update yet. It's only a minor update but just the fact that I don't have it yet keeps bugging me and making me want to root

Nope, not unheard of at all. I have the same position.
This is the first phone I like 100% stock. I will probably get a custom kernel / cm9 when it comes out.
Im sticking to stock rom till my store warrenty is up. Just wanna make sure that the phone works the way its meant to before I start messing with it.
I came from the galaxy s captivate. I used to flash a lot but with the galaxy nexus, I didn't even unlock the boot loaders. I will just stay stock forever!

Waiting for things to get a bit better understood/stable before doing ROMs, but definitely will at some point for better battery life, tether etc...
I guess I'm waiting for Google to put out a very stable build that developers can go from. Google is very quick with updates so this should happen soon.
My previous flashing was done to make up for staggering shortcomings with the device and manufacturers that dragged their feet with updates. I don't think this will be, and hasn't been, the case with the Nexus.
4.0.3 is a good start for a base with roms but there are still some issues that I want officially resolved by Google before I start flashing a bunch of stuff from independent developers.

Mine's still stock, I'm just enjoying ICS as it is for the moment.
When I do decide to root and flash ROMs/kernal, I'm just glad that the partitions aren't like the partitions on the GSII, the recovery and kernal on the same partition had me spinning for a while on my Sprint GSII.

I believe if you go Settings->About Phone->System Update, you can hit the button that says check for update and it will ping the server and ask if an update is available. You can do that if you want 4.0.2 which honestly why wouldn't you, it's just a bug fixer.
Like many others, I've rooted every other Android phone I've owned, usually within the day of purchasing it. However, in this case I don't feel a need. Maybe once a fully stable CM9 build is available I'll bother, but for now it's not worth my time and effort.
I will at least root and use wireless tether for now.
I am keeping mine stock for a few more weeks until the rooms start getting stable. I find that known issues get fixed in rooms much quicker than waiting for Samsung to address them.

stock for now. the only reason for me to root is for wireless tether, but i dont need that right now.

Haven't heard any news of an ota to the gsm devices. Are they not getting it or am I not? I run a custom kernel and are rooted... but I have seen no news of a galaxy nexus ota.

The OTA hasn't started rolling for any GNex devices. There's an image if you're on takju, but no OTA.
Nexus S ota lower memory use! Much better performance.
Just installed Jelly 4.1.2 on Nexus S device last night. I'm posting here to provide my experience. This phone is running like a new, better device. It is using half, HALF the sys memory than before. So far just sweet goodness. I recommend this update to all. Absolutely no problems thus far. I've tried things it didn't like in the past and it just keeps chugging along. I swear, EveryThing is faster. Will test batt life today when I go out, then report. This is only a .01 update! WOW! Thank you Google. Thank you T-Mobile. F'in awesome job. That is all.
I found a cwm that flashed system a while back and used that to upgrade to this version.

Where are you getting that system memory number from? It sounds a little suspect.

I understand. This thing has what 334mb avail for apps to RUN not store. Before OTA update, was using task managers and restarts to keep around 50-70 mb free. After update, without intervention, phone says around 100 mb free. I exaggerated a bit but not that much. I find, also, the system keeps things freed up. I have not killed any apps or cleared cache since I got the OTA last night. I got the update in the afternoon then went to my 27" iMac to try to get a feel of how well things were going for others.Things looked sort of OK, but not much info so I decided to pull the trigger last night around 8pm Pacific. Proceeded to run it ragged. Streaming movies to my Mac via Wi-Fi, no problem. Played the only 3 games I have installed right now, no problem. Checked mem, 92 mb free! Made sure all apps were not running, only Skifta. It's been over 12 hours, no prob.
So, for me, this old dog got a shot of steroids. I'm thinking this will probably be last u/d for this device.(but that's what I thought about 4.1.1). If some app devs stay cool, don't think I'll get new device 'till after my contract fully expires. Was thinking about upgrading handset at earliest time. Couple months before end. Now... i can get better deal from carrier. Or jump ship to Big Red. Just wanted to put some helpful info out there because it looked like most people were side-loading this thing.

I'm usually (or used to be) quite impatient about these sort of things. I've been using a Mac since 1986(not the same one : ) and had to have the latest greatest thing. Over time I've learned a tiny bit of patience. I've found in almost every case it's best to wait a bit.. Smarter to let those without some restraint be the guinea pigs. This has saved my ass in recent years. So, I guess I would advise you to wait for the OTA. Things can go wrong when loading from a website. I've done it(with my wife's phone) and once I thought i bricked it. If not for the Grace of God and this site, it would still be in that state.
So sir? Try to wait. 1 it's totally worth it , I don't know who your carrier is but if you've received an OTA before, you'll get it again. Just got mine yesterday from T-MOBILE. So far, everything works better. Much better than an unexpected .01 update. This has done as much or more in performance than 4.0.4 to 4.1.1. Really. Give it a couple of days. Good things come to those who wait. That's just a guy in S.F. who loves gadgets advice.

It rolls out in phases. The factory image will wipe data. But there is a cwm file that updates boot and system. Its essentially the ota except larger since its the entire system.

Ok guys, first time I've posted on this forum. just registered. My partner "persuaded" me to switch from an iPhone 3GS, 4S, then 5....to an Android, and after spending all that money on iPhones, let's say I'll never touch one again LOL
So now to the question:
I have a Galaxy Note II with AT&T SGH-i317
He helped me root it, and install a custom rom on to it. We installed several, but then finally AVATAR, which I love. The only problem is that BOTH of our phones now, take about 1,000% longer to charge. And that's not a joke. Some things I've noticed.
We're using the newest one (I'm using the update of yesterday, June 8th, 2013. he's using the previous one, may 23rd I think.
We BOTH have the same battery issues.
We BOTH can not stream netflix on either device.
MY phone succeeded with the update no problems whatsoever.
HIS phone failed to "read" off the internal memory card, but nothing wrong with internal storage from what we can tell. So therefore, the install "failed" on his.
His Note 2 fails to run "The price is right slots" when he tries to run it or connect it to facebook. MINE runs and does it fine. (with the previous version OR this newest one)
Then I noticed the ROM we were using identifies our devices as a N7105. the ROM build: avatar-2.14b-1058-20130607-t0lte
THIS is the CORRECT ROM for the AT&T Sgh-i317: avatar-2.9b-737-20130503-t0lteatt --> Which I've just discovered. (LOL *facepalm*)
Is there a chance that this is causing "battery charging issues"? and what other issues might this be causing or have the potential to cause?
I guess what I am asking is Do I NEED or is it advisable to change to the PROPER AT&T ROM? or will I see no ill-effect of keeping this N7105 Rom?

From my own personal experience, you are lucky you didn't brick it. I made that mistake and i had to buy another phone, so, yes putthe proper rom on there...
Never flash anything that is for another specific device. Technically there are some things that can be flashed but as a noob I would suggest following this rule.

I'm coming off 2 generations of HTC phones and I'm due an upgrade with Sprint. I bypassed on the GS5 and One M8 for various reasons and the G3 seems to fit my needs but I have a few questions first.
1) Root is must. While I know the phone can be rooted, I'm worried about updates afterward. I'm fine with a stock ROM but I need to know that after I root I can still update Android, bug fixes, radios, new features. Can this be done and if so how (only a very basic description is needed, not a guide lol). I've read the the bootloader can not be unlocked so what are limitations associted with that?
2) Will Android "L" and it's ART only runtime work on this phone? If so, I guess that relates to my question #1 if I'm already rooted.
3) Actually, that's really it. The phone looks amazing and I'm ok with it "only" being a snapdragon 801 with the 805 and beyond right around the corner but I need to know that if I root, I'll be able to easily flash new updates as they become available.
Now that the phone is in the wild in the US, are there any clearer answers to my questions? Thank You.
Hi, first of all I would like to say the phone is great, it seems to get some negative comments here but since I got one I have been very happy with my first LG handset.
Ok we'll you can't get ota's after rooting, I haven't received any official updates yet so I'm not sure if we can just full uproot with supersu to get the it a again or not. But flashing a stock firmware is a pretty simple procedure and the kind folks here at xda keep us up to date with all the stock firmware so you can update and then reroot.
ART will run on this phone no problem at all however it seems android L may break root so if root is a must you may be best advised to look into you're updates before hand, which is another advantage of getting you're stock rom's at xda. Would be pretty frustrating to agree to a ota and find out you can no longer root when it's done.
But in short, root is fine on 'nearly' all he variants and flashing stock fw manually is not to much fuss.
Hope that helps you a little.

It does help a bit. Thank you but I need to have this clear in my head. With HTC, in order to update radios, you needed s-off, which was more than just root. That's what I'm hesitant about here, if I root, and want an update the g3, I have to unroot, update and re root? What if the update prevents root? I don't want to be stuck with a choice of updating or keeping root on a phone that won't be able to stay updated with the latest version and patches of software.
Really, knowing that I'll be able to root, and update firmware, radios and software throughout the life of the phone is the only thing holding me back from an LG G3 or waiting for the note 4 and a probably larger development base. I'd prefer the G3 so I hope it can be assured.

If you're into rooting and flashing custom rooms I would seriously avoid this phone and wait for note 4. Trust me when you get your hands on this phone the first thing you want to do is get rid of the lag. It seriously lags worse then S5. I'm a HTC fan and found the lag really annoying constantly using task manager which I hate doing.
So if you are a rooter and love to flash roms don't buy.

its funny you say that. I looked at the phone today. First thing I thought of when I looked at it was touchwiz. The UI just seemed very laggy. Maybe after all the hype I was just expecting a bit more. Nice phone but didn't "wow" me.

I got my G3 early Thursday from AT&T and I have no complaints thus far. I do notice slight lag from time to time but if you're on XDA and are use to custom slimmed down ROMs then yes, you'll kind of notice it. But trust me, it is far from a deal breaker.
Here's the thing, in a few weeks there will be numerous ROM's that have stripped away the bloatware and added a few tweaks and the lag will be non existent. I already have my phone rooted and have deleted most of the bloatware and added UI tweaks. I barely notice lag and I'm actually enjoying the UI.
This is just my 2 cents. And being loyal Samsung customer for years I can honestly say I prefer LG 's new UI over touchwiz any day.

I rooted with ioroot, deleted all useless apps and froze others that I don't use with titanium backup.
I still have some lag but nothing that is driving me crazy by any means. The only time it lagged for me was when I used the LG health screen and I think the photo gallery. I turned off the health screen and I've always use QuickPic instead of stock gallery. Most my lag is gone but not all.

i am a note2/note3 owner that now has the LG G3 the note 3 was the worst phone i have ever owned. So far am liking the LG G3 root will come shortly.

How is the Note 3 the worse phone ever? I note 3 on both VZW and AT&T using KK. Both work great. Personally much better than my Note 1 & 2. I don't have any lag. I did order the LG 3 to replace my VZW Note 3. My only complaint with the Note 3 is horrible pictures when it does its "processing" garbage.

I believe that has to do with software OIS from within the camera app options. You can turn this off

it is a POSSIBILITY
NOTHING can be CERTAIN until source drops AND someone TRIES, but I'd have to IMAGINE that SOMEONE will be trying hard as HELL to keep this device rolling in development no matter how old it gets, many people hold this device dear to their hearts, it was one of the first WIDELY released nexus devices on MULTIPLE carriers including cdma. and even though it's a pita sometimes, we still have love for this ol girl, but right now, at this very moment, NO ONE can tell you 100% if it WILL run lollipop %100 stable or even what many would consider daily driver type of builds.

Android 4.4 wasn't officially supported by Galaxy Nexus, yet we have a plethora of ROMs to choose from. I believe that 5.0 will be no different. It will take more time to get it to work because of the changes from other iterations, but we will get it. Not officially. Google probably won't give a hoot that there is a new driver, and just leave the device for dead. There is no money to be made from the amount of work that would have to be done. If it DOES get officially released, I'd be incredibly surprised.

yep, that tends to happen when I go posting after a few beers, apologies, but hey, I cleared it up right? that was really my main intention

NO ONE has said that Google will push ANY kind of official L update to gnex, when source code drops, custom Rom development will undergo to try and bring 5.0 based aosp roms to the gnex, which isn't unfeasible.

I heard of CM is not going to support galaxy nexus with lollipop due to the lack of maintainers. Maybe teams like PA might keep on with their supports. But I don't expect Gnex would run well on L coz it doesn't even on Kitkat. every now and then I see stuters and bugs . When I thought Gnex was dying and apparently showing its age, I flashed back to the stock 4.3 . The magic just happened and my gnex was brought back to life . yes the scrolling isn't as smooth as that on others roms but everything is fast especially when it comes to multitasking, it's great.
with that said , I mean even gnex is going get supports from some devs , what we could do with it is simply have a look at that and that will by no means be a stable and pleasant daily driver.

I'm looking to go back to 4.3 as well. Is it as simple as doing the normal procedures and flash a 4.3 rom? I heard of some issues downgrading while using 4.4 bootloaders and problems with SD card memory. Just want to make sure if there were any extra precautions you had to take before going back to 4.3

so for someone to build for toro/toroplus isn't too much to infer. I can't see NO ONE not building for gnex at Some point
whether EVERYTHING is FULLY working or not is another story, but I'm sure it'll be usable

No, there's not a single problem that i've seen. I just downloaded the factory Image and flashed it in fastboot mode.
but that will erase everything so just make a backup for your apps.
Funny that you say 4.3 runs well on your gnex because I've been running stock 4.3 for quite a while because I was fed up with trying to find the best custom rom and dealing with kernels and stuff.
4.3 runs like complete **** on my gnex and it has since I put it on there. It seems to get worse as time goes on though. I was using the Aviate launcher for quite a while but just installed the Google Now one to try that out and it seems much, much worse than Aviate in the performance department. I can be in an app, press home button and it will be close to 10 seconds sometimes for it to load, even with no apps present in the multitask/app switch thing. Blows my mind. I don't know why the performance is so bad.
I want to go back to android 4.1.2 because it's the only time I remember my gnex being quick.....but im having a hard time making that decision because of feature reasons.

It gets worse because the Java garbage colector is not doing what it's suppose to do and you have memory leaks so the memory gets full without a way of emptying it... To get around this, you need to restart the phone to empty the memory(usually daily or even two times a day). This HUGE bug is present onward since 4.2 for GNex, excluding 4.4 builds. So 4.1.2 will be best in that department.
But there is no need to go back to 4.1.2 to get this fixed (I couldn't bare it). Instead CM 10.1 has managed to fix the leak and you would be on 4.2 which is pretty similar to 4.3 and even 4.4 from the user end
I think Android 5.0 unofficially will continue.
There will be no further support officially. I "travel" too in different kit kat roms but always there were a bit of lag.
I return to cm 10.2 and my phone was brilliant, pretty quick.
Until recently that I install liquidsmooth that gone very fast for kit kat version.
I think now the kit kat versions will be enough stable. For lollipop, we will have to wait a lot.
