fire tv remote to control qnap nas? (non bluetooth) - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im buying a qnap nas which has an ir sensor
i know the fire tv remote works off bluetooth, is there a way of making the fire tv remote work with the qnap nas which i will be running kodi etc
thanks

Why using a remote for the NAS when you´re running KODI on the aTV? KODI could access all NAS files via UPnP/DLNA.

Why offer alternative instead of answer question?

if the nas has no bluetooth, i think there is no way to use it to control the nas.
and without more infos about the nas (model, maybe link to website) how we should help you? we know you have a nas and a aftv remote and now?
ig you provide more infos, maybe there are more people that can give you some hinds or help you.
but i tink without bluetooth on the nas, there is no was and even with bluetooth i dont know if its so easy to get it connectet or work

Where is your alternative...?
My alternative is as I said using UPnP playback within KODI where you can still use the regular aTV remote since it is fully supported by KODI. So you don´t need to start the playback directly at the NAS since it is fully controlled remotely via UPnP protocol.

Just answer his question, don't give an alternative at all. That's all he asked

Let him decide on his own which comments are helpful for him.... Oh, and you could still answer yourself to the question instead of giving your typical helpfull comments which are not based on the topic....

yeh sorry i am moving away from amazon tv, but have the remote which i quite like.
the qnap ts-253 has direct kodi support and will be on the tv via hdmi... just controlling around the 'os' on the qnap.. i think it has an ir sensor and people are using measy remotes etc

Maybe it will work if you have a bluetooth usbdongle for the nas but i dont know if this will work or if the nas supports bluetooth dongles.
as i sayed without bluetooth on the nas you not able to use the remote.
alternative you can use a smartphone/tablet with kodi remote app to control the nas via wifi.

Even with a supported USB bluetooth dongle you may probably have to rework the keymapping of KODI. I don´t know if this is possible with the embedded QNAP KODI or if you have access to the keymap.xml on the NAS. But interesting that QNAP is now embedding KODI, didn´t see this as official feature in NAS devices until now.

After reading a few links at the QNAP forums to see what people with similar requests found out, it was revealed that any generic BT dongle requiring drivers and a software pairing interface would not work. Dongles already paired with devices from a factory that plug in and interface like a HID keyboard and mouse work fine.
Someone sarcastically mentioned that you could wipe it and install Debian for better driver / software support ("Debian on QNAP forum" - requires login).
As you've already found out, there is a built-in IR port and people have used a variety of remotes and Logitech Harmonies to control their systems, in addition to the QNAP supported one.

[Q] Play MKV locally via USB?

I've been searching around but can't find a definitive answer. I'm interested in purchasing a FireTV, but I need something that can play files (mkv's mostly) locally via USB thumb drives (a la WD TV Live). I know I can set up a Plex server on my machine and stream files over my wifi network but would prefer the aforementioned method. Is this a possibility with Amazon's FireTV? My audio receiver will decode DTS audio, so I'm not concerned about it processing audio.
Any help/explanation(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not available yet. USB doesn't work for drives only devices like mice, keyboards, controllers. To get it working will most likely require root and changes.

Thanks for the clarification!
like krelvinaz mentioned, no usb storage option yet, for me my solution was to install xmbc on the fire tv, the usb thumb conected to the USB port of my router, that way i add or remove content of the usb drive from my imac, work flawless for me.

TIP: Use Sony Tv Remote as Fire tv Remote?

I have Sony KDR60R550A and i accidentally figured out that I can use my TV remote play, pause and navigation buttons to actually navigate Amazon Fire TV. It works with any app inside Fire tv.
Sorry if this is known tip.
i think it's not the remote that will work solo,
it's cause your hdtv uses cec.
also my samsung tv remote can be used, also the touchmouse (not synced with ftv but with samaung tv) just google for cec ^-^

Yeah, is a bummer my Lg42LB5600 doesn't support CEC, at least the remote doesn't do nothing to the fire stick.
But it worked on my Samsung and my older 32 toshiba.
I'm thinking of getting one of this down the road and install it on the LG tv.

Anything to help reduce the number of remotes I guess.

That auction for the HDMI break-out box is to separate out the Audio Return Channel from the HDMI cable. It may pass CEC commands, but it doesn't seem to be a CEC injector.

I don't think it will work in my scenario because everything is routed through the bose lifestyle which cuts out all CEC related items. I'll test it out tonight though. Thanks for the tip.
My remote also works with cec but when I am in kodi how to go back to the home fire TV without quiting kodi or how to simulate the home button of the original remote?

I'm happy to report that my sony remote too works even when it goes through the bose lifestyle. Here are my observances.
1. No Additional features can be used such as the number pad of the Sony Remote.
2. The range is limited to Infrared and the remote must be pointed to the TV vs. the firetv remote which has a great range.

Kodi and reading media off of TV port

Good day,
I have a TV with a USB port, can I run kodi on a fire TV stick and pull media off of the USB stick connected to the TV directly?
Sorry, searching for this in the wiki was a nightmare
Probably not, unless your TV creates some kind of media server out of the USB storage. I have no idea whether any TV does that, but if you provide the TV model, you might get a different response from someone else.
TVs are display device, they don't usually have video output, not by USB anyway.
As Claude Koch already mentioned the TV must run as media server, which is not a standard feature of most TVs. Check if your TV does support "UPnP" or "DLNA" distribution as server. It is important that those protocols are supported as server since most TVs which do support DLNA/UPnP work only as client! KODI could then access the served content via UPnP source setting in the Video or Audio tab. A direct connection to the USB stick via file explorer is not possible.

problems network storage configuration Nvidia Shied Tv 16g Asus RT-AC87U Synalogyc

I have problems with network storage configuration.
Nvidia recognizes the Disktation of Synalogyc.
But when they put the user and the password, it shows an error and the configuration is closed.
The nas smb protocol is activated.
The configuration of my network is:
Nvidia Shied Tv 16g
Asus RT-AC87U
Synologyc Nas 1315+
Thanks for your help
AFIK Android TV support only SMB1, set the proper setting in Synology config.
You can use NFS for your network shares.
Use Kodi to playback your media, it has his own network shares supports and don't rely on the ****y Plex network support forced into Shield TV firmware.
By nfs the kody works perfectly
Hello, thanks for your help.
By nfs the kody works perfectly.
But for smb and the plex I do not make it work.
I can not understand that nobody knows the proper configuration. When the Nvidia Shield Tv is a distributor of Plex Server and sold it with that option. I had acquired it for that reason. And not making it work is frustrating.
I can not understand how nobody has
found a solution to this problem neither by nvidia or by plex
I would not insist so much if it was not important to me.
regards
Companies "solutions":
- Plex say it's Nvidia fault
- Nvidia say it's Plex fault
- In case these "solutions" fail they say it's user fault
Meanwhile the important question remains:
Why do you need Plex?
There are better alternatives like Emby that you can install in your Synology (server part addon) and use Emby for Kodi (client part) on Kodi running in your Shield TV as a bonus you can add Live TV/PVR support (TV tuners) too because Emby has it (and Synology if i remember correctly).
Emby will work on phones, tablets and PC's too, LAN and WAN.
Hello
That's what happens to me that Plex and -Nvidia go on saying why it happens.
There must be a secure configuration problem
and they have to know why it is.
I wanted to use the Plex I have it congured in several devices.
and now I do not know why it fails.

FireTV stick working with TV remote

I have a few firetv sticks. Today I noticed something peculiar. One is located in my garage and I was using an IPTV app on the device. I picked up the tv remote to set the timer. I backed out and realized was backing out of a menu app on the firetv. I also have an RCA universal 6 device remote and it worked as well. I know I programmed the rca to control a roku. But I don’t recall doing anything for the firetv. I certainly never did anything to the Panasonic remote (it’s an older plasma tv). Anyone ever seen this? I have many of the universal remotes and it would be great to program more to work with other firetv sticks.
What you're seeing is called HDMI-CEC. It allows the TV to send basic navigation commands to the Fire TV over the HDMI connection. No programming is needed. You can verify this is what is happening by disabling HDMI-CEC in the Fire TV's display settings. See here: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire...able-hdmi-cec-in-new-5-2-4-0-software-update/
