Hello everyone! It's been a month or so since I got a new LG G4 and I've been wanting to root it since the but I don't want to void the warranty yet, so I have a few questions about this. This isn't my first phone to root, but I need some info on this one.
1. What's the difference between *Low Effort Root**and *Bootloader Unlock and Root*?
2. The low effort root can save me from voiding my warranty? Note: I'm from Romania and my LGH815 is a Romanian model too.
3. If those are not the only ways to root it, is there any way of rooting and not voiding the warranty?
4. If question 2 or 3 has a positive answer, can I still get official updates from LG or do I need to download and flash them then root again?

You can use low effort and whenever you want to you can flash back to stock, unroot and make it look to LG (or to whoever might have given you a warranty) as if you never altered anything.
You never think about taking an ota while rooted but updating manually ("low effort" with newest firmware version, for example marcosuper7) is unproblematic. Ok?

I agree with the manual update, but as far as I know, there are some things that show that I've been changing or altering the software on the phone, some code, I don't really know.

1. low effort only roots and do not touch the bootloader... with bootloader unlock your warranty is void.
2. yes (if you restore to stock with lg flash tool before.)
3. no other way to root till now.
4. no. you have to flash official updates with lg flash tool and root again.

Understood. But what's the difference between those 2? Besides "touching" the bootloader. Any advantage on any of them or disadvantage?

with an unlocked bootloader you can install twrp and then you can flash something for example custom roms.

as long as its a stock based rom then yes but without an unlocked bootloader not for custom roms.

Great informative thread! A few Q's if its OK?
1. So with Low Effort Root I can use Xposed and all the modules, remove bloatware and if something goes wrong I can just us the LG tool for restoring?
2. When an OTA is released I will loose root, or I won't even be able to install OTAs?
3. I really want to change the colours if the notification quick toggles, that should be able to do with Xposed, right?
4. Are all G4 updates available viua the LG tool, don't want to use old firmwares just because I'm rooted?
5. After rooting and changing what I want to change can I then remove root to make the phone more secure and not as "open" and potentially vulnerable?

2./4. you never try to take an ota on a rooted g4. You flash through flashtool or push a rooted image when it's available, a couple of days after official release at max.
3. yes
5. most of the advantages of root are lost once you unroot. The only one you don't lose (that i can think of) is that you're still as debloated as before unrooting.

But changes like the one mentioned in (3) will still be there after I remove root?
I'm pretty sure Xposed or any associated modules won't work, or won't work properly if you un-root. Why are you so worried about leaving your phone rooted?

Not sure I'm that worried, but I know that some apps won't start on a rooted device. But I remember something about an app that hides the fact that the phone is rooted, does that exist?

Hey guys. I'm considering to root my international One X but I have a few questions about the consequences after rooting. I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer my questions.
1. Will I be able to unroot my phone without leaving any traces of root that might void my warranty?
2. Will I be able to receive OTA updates on stock rom? If so, will I still have root after I install the update? (let's say the upcoming JB update)

1- no cause you have to unlock your bootloader and they will see that...so you will void your warrany
2-you will be able to recieve OTA updates, but if you're running a custom rom and you're rooted you must not update through them!

No, unlocked bootloader is a prerequisite for rooting.

yep, did the same thing, i have waited a bit to see if there was problems with the phone and then when i discovered that there was nothing wrong i unlocked it....after 1 week
does the g3 have any sort of tamper flag like knox on samsung , which voids warranty when rooting?

Pretty sure any sort of rooting technically voids the warranty. That's what an ODIN reflash is for.

Well, I used towelroot to root the G3. It's pretty non-intrusive and very simple to use. No reboots required. Just install the APK and click a button.
Your bootloader stays intact and so does the stock recovery. If a simple root is all you want, try towelroot. You just need a factory reset to remove root.
And yes.. the S5 users are using it to root their devices without tampering the Knox bit. Based on this info, I would say it's pretty safe

Is the factory reset enough to make the phone accept OTA's? I can't see why it wouldn't be (unless there is a tampered flag) however some people on here have said refreshing stock rom is the only way to do it.

I used towel root on my LG G Pro 2 to change my build prop so that I could install and run skygo. I performed a full unroot with supersSU Pro and surprisingly found that this did not satisfy skygo and it still flagged up as rooted (superSU Pro has always worked for me previously with other root processes).
I repeated the root process and I found some additional towel root files in system xbin which I removed then ran unroot with supersSU Pro and was then able to run skygo successfully.
I hope this is relevant to the g3 as I intend to buy a 32gb version but would like to have skygo on this. For the first time in my life, I am not charging in head first. I am holding back on my purchase and reading everything about it first.
Not sure I can keep this up for much longer though.

The price you pay for being on the bloody edge is that sometimes when you're one of the first to have a new device no one has had the device to develop exploits for it.
You can always feel free to jump in and develop the method and publish it.

This uses an exploit that does not work on the LG G4 (ability to remount /system as read/write instead of read only).
All of the existing root scripts that I have found execute the command "mount -rw,remount /system".
In earlier LG phones this command was successful. In the LG G4 this command fails (No Permissions) so the older exploits don't work.

Did you try the g flex 2 rooting method?
rooting is one of the reason I've joined here. Will wait for updates. I'm itching to try it on my upcoming G4. Hopefully, I won't messed up this time around

A few questions for the uninitiated of LG Android. I am not familiar with the LG Android ecosystem, been with Motorola and just got off of Samsung. If I root the G4 now, how will that affect getting OTA updates and installing them? (like if I root would that hinder my ability to get conventional OTA downloads and being able to install them normally? Like if it would set my "status" to "custom".)
I'd REALLY like to be able to uninstall Facebook and Messenger! Would uninstalling them also possibly hinder my ability to get OTA updates and installing them?
Last will I have to worry about voiding my warranty like you would with a Samsung device if you root that and say tripped the knox counter??

As far as I remember, just rooting your phone doesn't take away OTA availability. You'd have to freeze or delete the files that control that process with a root explorer

You definitely want to make sure Ota is blocked , I remember on my rooted and TWRP installed stock G2, when the first Ota came through tons of people almost ended up with bricked phones, thankfully someone found a way around it, but it wasn't looking good for a second., after that I just flashed a modified stock room to eliminate the risk of OTA

well got this **** to work when SU told me to reinstall with twrp -_- i rebooted and lost root now i can't get it to work (semi bricked FML)
Also used other root apps so might be a combo problem of this **** is the system mount/un-mount i had this with my s3 once it disabled my internal sd, so i need an twrp to get it back going or i'll just call my insurance

If SU told you to reinstall with TWRP it didnt work

You will not root the G4 now. The bootloader is still not unlocked. After that we can expect root to follow. One forum member said the ul bl and root would be available at the same time - but now is not the time.
Also, for the international version that I have - the UK H815, there is an option in settings not to download or install the OTA.

You can achive root without unlocked BL, if you have an unlocked BL you can root without having to use exploits
Hello guys,
I'm sorry I created a new thread to ask some questions but nobody responded when I asked on an existing thread. Also, I think you should keep this thread for new users who what to know everything about rooting their LG G3.
So, my questions are the following:
I just bought the LG G3 (D855, runs Lollipop out of the box) and I want to root to it (I've rooted many devices before) but will I be able to receive OTA updates? Does LG has any security feature like Samsung's Knox that is triggered by the rooting process and marks my device? Is there any danger in general?
If later on I decide to flash TWRP and custom ROMs will I have to unlock the bootloader?

I am not sure about the Lollipop version but when I was running KitKat I was notified of OTA updates but when I've tried to run it I got a pop up that update couldn't be applied because my phone was rooted. had to get rid of root than I could update it.

From what I heard a simple unroot from SuperSu app was not even enough, because the stock fw has a counter that is incremented in case you root, and therefore even if you remove root the counter will still prevent you from applying the OTA.

I've flashed a stock firmware and updated. There may have been a simpler way, but I am not an expert.
Again I am not sure if things got easier or harder with Lollipop but to be very honest in the last few firmware updates I did not see anything life changing from LG that would worth the hassle. I think being rooted is much more valuable than the latest firmware updates were.

So, LG indeed has a "security" feature that messes with your device. Can someone confirm it?
If the counter is software can't we alter/erase it? Or is it hw-based like Samsung's Knox Warranty Void? If it is hw-based we cannot do something.
Hi. I am about to purchase a Huawei Mate SE and wanted to know if there is a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. It looks like Kingroot and/or Kingoroot might be an option. I'm not new to rooting phones so I understand most of the basics. From what I read, I won't be able to install a custom recovery and therefore can't install custom ROMs which is fine. I mainly want root for apps like Titanium Backup and Greenify. I don't want to lose the ability to OTA. Is this possible? Thanks in advance for the help.
Kingroot and kingoroot are hot piles of garbage on oreo, and nougat. Pretty sure it only works up to lollipop.
Only way to root is to flash Magisk, and that requires an unlocked bootloader.

I just ordered this phone also. You should be able to get your bootloader unlocked with a service. See threads.
I sure hope so. Cause i plan on doing some stuff with this device.
Unlocking the bootloader is not difficult, but then there is a stupid bootloader unlocked warning that comes every time the phone restarts. And supposedly there is no way to turn it off for Huawei phones
