Should I get this phone? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,I'm thinking of buying this phone.I think the specs are great but I saw many reviews of it being laggy and slow on lollipop and other issues such as overheating and terrible battery life.
I know that it has a qhd screen which will drain battery more quicker but i saw screen on time of 1:30 - 2:30 hours only which i think is really bad considering it has 3000mah battery.
So guys, is it really bad on lollipop?I don't know if it is better on latest version because i saw reviews from june-july.
I need an honest opinion because I'm really fed up with lag on my xperia sp and now I want a lagfree phone.

The phone is a beast, especially considering that it costs 1/3 of current Galaxy S6 or even 1/4 of Note 5.
Battery life is better than S6, in par with Note 5.
Performance is great, camera is great, speaker is great, battery is good, software isn't bloated like Touchwiz.
Only thing that annoys me is slowish updates (because it's not main flagship anymore, G4 is) and washed out blacks since it's LCD screen.
Other than that I think its a great device and I'm happy that I will be using it for another year.

Thanks for the reviews guys.Hopefully i'll get it soon

I currently have the galaxy s2. Hows the battery life on the nitro? Cause I had the LG thrill and it sucked and so did the camera. How is that on the nitro?

Stock, the battery life of the Nitro isn't so great. About in the neighborhood of 8hrs with medium usage. If you don't mind rooting, debloating and tweaking than you can get better results.
The 8mp camera on the Nitro is decent to good. Sharpness, saturation and white balance are about on par with any other higher-end phone. The negative though is it can take up to 6 seconds from 1st shot before you can take the next shot...So this is NOT an action capable camera.
There's another thread with literally the EXACT same subject line as this new thread created, with the last word being the only difference:

I wouldn't say 6 seconds, dat's a little steep, but definitely not instantaneous; ballpark i say is somewhere around 3 seconds shutter lag, but that might be due to the crappy 16GB class 2 SD Card that comes with most of the P930.
No lag on Class 4 sdcard, rooted, hard reset and debloated.

what does that cut the shutter lag to? have you tried a faster card than class 4?
I have a class 4 and it takes 2-3 seconds between pictures.
sounds like the class 4 takes a little more than a second off the process. i'm getting ~4 seconds shutter refresh on indoor well-lit snaps, maybe a bit quicker outdoors in full sun.
anyone tried a class 10? usually overkill for a p&s but maybe with this device........
Processing lag is about 2 seconds with class 4 but then I havent seen a phone that was faster. Is class 10 on the market? I saw class 6 but the reviews said that they write speed gain was barely noticable.
Btw this is my second day without recharging mid day so the baterry is not near as bad as evo 4g or any mobile on wimax.
Also for anyone that caress, the touchscreen is a bit different than on sg2 or skyrocket (a bit different response wise). I definitely noticed that I am making less mistakes while typing. It seems way more precise than anything before.
Sent from my LG-P930 using Tapatalk
It's probably related to finger-to-finger difference. My typing on Nitro is way worse then on Atrix 4g, with keyboard buttons smaller then on Nitro.
My typing on my galaxy s2 sucks lol

The keyboard on this phone actually drives me nuts sometimes. When posting for example, it's incredibly slow to register my inputs. But, over texting it's almost too sensitive. I don't know why but it also registers the first letter twice sometimes. I guess I just have to get more used to it. Wish it can be iPhone keyboard smooth.
just fine
At first I was skeptical of this phone.
Now, it works just well. I can stream music for an easy 6 hrs. I can do the same task I've done on any other phone with pretty much the same battery usage. If I'm having a slow day at work and I know I'm using my phone heavy I will plug it in and use it. Or if i'm driving I will have in charging. it's exactly the same way I treated my iphone or other phones in the past.
The soft keyboard is a bit touch and it does lag pretty good at times..
The phone is fair. There is really nothing out there that my provider can offer (BELL)
It's got the HTC RAIDER (even worse battery life) and the Nexus (no expandable storage) - which was actually the deal breaker. I do not like being restricted to 16gb max. I like to know I can carry another one with me or have a 32gb. I like to carry movies and music..
I still wish there were more phones with FM tuner built in.. That would be perfect!
Just my 2 cents I guess.
I bought the sgs2 skyrocket, exchanged it for the nitro HD, and then returned the device 2 days later. The battery life, even with little use, is bad. I would seriously think long and hard about making the switch.
It doesn't matter to me which phone folks get but 2 days with this phone is simply not enough time to accurately gauge this battery. Hell, I don't think a week is enough
This phone needs a fair bit of set-up, including full drains/charges and bloat cleared out, etc. but after more than a month with this phone I can say the battery is performing entirely different than it did on day 2 and it is not an issue (other than my trying to make it one).
The fact of the matter boils down to this for me:
I wanted the screen and I wanted the LTE. Those features are part of what defines this phone and those 2 features are the top battery drains and would be on any phone.
I agree with what Scott mentioned regarding the battery. A little over a month and now the battery can last much much longer even with gaming and all. Somehow the phone adapts to your usage and becomes more efficient. Not much more, but better than when it was fresh out the box.

I'm glad to hear that your experience is similar, says a lot about this device.
Another thing about the battery, it charges fast IMO. I like to let mine go to full drain before charging up and I just did a full charge in 1 hour ~40 minutes and that reflects most charge times for me.
I don't have much experience charging other smart phones but that's a very acceptable time for me.

Yup, indeed this phone's battery charges really fast, fastest of course with chargers that give out higher amps. Using the stock charger (1.2 amps) I can fully charge the phone at about the same time u mention, sometimes even faster. Using blackberry chargers (0.8 amps), it takes a bit longer, but still fast. It's nice to see a phone charge that fast. The atrix took a long time to fully charge, and that's not from a full drain too.

Is it still worth buying this phone?

Hey,
I have a chance to buy this phone used for 70$ with one scratch on top of the screen. Digitizer is still working perfectly. I will probably replace it in future.
What about performance? I watched some gaming videos on youtube, everything looks smooth. San Andreas is also smooth. What do you think?
I have this phone for half year and i want rid of it quicky. Big problems with wifi (I repaired it 10 times) and battery drain (I have HOX+ battery, still worst). Dont buy dat ****. Get some new Motorola!
what about HTC One X+? Do you know anything about it?
Its better, but battery drain and overheating is still bad
If your hox have issues that doesnt mean its bad phone and other have issues. Build quality is great only battery is not the best but holds a day for me
Sent from my One X using XDA Free mobile app
Battery is the biggest drawback for the HOX, even the + model is poor, especially when comparing with devices like the LG G2.
$70 is a decent price for the phone but jut beware of sub-standard battery life.
Does it hold at least 7 hours with medium usage? What about gaming performance? Does any game lag?
It holds for me 10-12 h with medium usage

Like others told you before me, battery doesn't last that long. Actually, they put it quite lightly, I would say that battery life is absolutely horrible. Also, the phone will heat up quite a lot during gaming (at least mine does) if you don't underclock and undervolt it. So, don't expect stellar gaming performance.
Then, there's the above-mentioned wifi issue too. Some phones come with this issue, but it's easily fixable. I was able to fix mine with no prior knowledge of phone hardware.
But, on the other hand, $70 for it is not that bad, I would go for it. Just, keep in mind its biggest drawback, the battery life.

Battery life so far on the G4 is horrible

Is the G4 really this bad? I bought one a few days ago, coming from the G2. I'm waiting for it to settle in but damn.. this thing goes through 3000mah like a fat kid through candy. My G2, now 2 years old lasts twice as long SOT. 6 hours to 3. I just.. I want to love the 4, but it is just too power hungry. Does this beast settle down over time? I have a week more to return it for something else, and on the verge.
Since firmware v10c there's a problem with GPS sucking battery. Try setting it to “battery saving“. Perhaps this improves things...
Yeah. Read that. Shouldn't have to turn everything down or off in 2015. I so love this phone but wow. The battery is nonsense. I went to it because my G2 was/is a champ. What is going on with this thing?
The battery in the g2 is much better, but finding a flagship from 2015 with a better battery than the g4 (and a comparable camera, screen, size etc.) is impossible.
It charges more than one percent per minute with6a normal charger, and you can buy a spare battery and a fast charger but the sot isn't going to get much better than what you're expering now. It's still the best phone ever imho.

I got a free battery with it, and the charging cradle. Which is nice. I guess I just got spoiled. The G2 is so awesome, and I expected this to be the same. It's not. Not even close. I bought this G4, a Note 5 and an S6 at the same time. Both Sammy's perform much better, and that pains me to say. Ugg.

You could help if you complain to LG about the GPS battery drain problem like me and others did already. Try “battery saving“ on GPS and post your results afterwards. With a decent screen brightness, I always get 4+ hours Screen on time. Not playing games or doing heavy battery draining tasks, though.

Man oh man, you are having better luck than I am. I might have a faulty unit, not sure, but the battery on this one is like driving an old car with a big V8. When you stomp on the gas you can literally see the gas gauge go down before your eyes. This phone is no different. My G2 was honestly 3X better than the G4. Good luck to you guys, and I mean that sincerely, I do. But I'm returning this thing. For me, at least... it is a pass.

Kind of the point though. I shouldn't have to tweak settings, and root a brand new phone to make it work. I'm not here to bash the G4 (I own it) but it stinks.. Ok.. bashed it lol. Seriously. I have the exact same apps loaded on it as my G2 and if sucks battery like a $2 hooker. The Camera is good, not sure as great as was reported. The speaker was kind of bashed from the reviews but I think it is AWESOME! So loud. But... battery. Nope. I don't care if they give me 40 free ones to swap, I shouldn't have to.

That's kind of what I meant. With my debloated, greenified, taskered, tweaked and optimized g2 I got sot of up to 10 hours, the g4 gives me 4-5. Except from every test ever and every user experience, I think not even LG tries to pretend that the g4 has the slightest chance to reach sot like the g2 did. You're the first person to say so ever, so I assumed the only explanation could be that your sot on the g2 were mediocre.

If you got 10 hours sot with g2 you were heavily underclocked and at that rate wtf is the point...i actually got a much smoother experience and better battery life by raising the min clock on big and little cores as with the stock settings both jumped around ridiculously chewing up battery on simple processes...we shouldn't have to root to fix anything but it's never the case...and getting 21 hours out of my g4 with 6 hours sot with browsing some gaming and lots of youtube vids I'm beyond impressed...h811 has no custom kernel yet so no undervolt is present...this phone will just continue to get better imo...i cant believe the complaints i see about a device that surpasses 95% of anything on the market

If you don't use auto, what manual settings for brightness would you normally use on the G4 ? Mention the figure in % or the range.
Are you on wifi or data, mixed ? what share each.
i gather you are on H815.
hey there @android404 mind sharing your g2 setup for those 10 hours and screen brightness also? i'm thinking my g2 might be a lemon i never reach even 6 hours with no heavy usage but i am on stock rom and kernel and i don't even use greenify i have no problem rooting it so please can you tell me your rom kernel clocks and whatnot? thx in advance.
Update. I went for broke and did a factory reset before I was forced to return it. Seems to have made a world of difference. Now it is performing the way I would expect it too. Not as good as the G2, but not draining before my eyes. I think something must have been borked. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic atp, but I have a week more of daily use to play with it. (Might get an extension) but so far, in the last 26 hours it is night and day difference. Whew. Really didn't want to take it back.

Yeah. Much better. Been unplugged for 10.5 hours and sot is just over an hour. 84% battery left. Same usage before the reset and it would have already been next to dead. Something was mucked up. I take back what I said before. This is what I expected.

Note 4 vs LG G4

Hi
I'm thinking to switch from a note 4 to a LG G4 but before I wanted to decide on want to ask the G4 users how there experience is with the phone. How is battery life and heat with this phone? How is camera?
I'm a moderate gamer but I watch often movies on my phone. S pen is not that important for me
the biggest problem of LG G4 is only about battery. I personally just can achieve 4-6 hours of battery life. My G4 was worked normally until last week: the temperature became 60'C, always restarting when overheated (now my G4 is at LG Service Center). Camera is absolutely the best, even note5 can't beat it. Screen size is only 5.5, so if you came from Note3 or Note4, you'll miss roomy screen. So, if you need best camera, buy it, otherwise upgrade to other phone IMHO
I dont know how battery life will improve with the marshmallow update. I just updated yesterday so time will show that. I would say battery life is about 4-5hrs SOT. If you are used to longer screen on time you might be in for a suprise. However the camera is the best i have seen. I don't know how it would compare to the note 5. Another device worth looking at is the Nexus 6P. It is up there with the best so maybe go into a store and check it out. Bottom line im happy with my LG G4. No lag at all

I came from a Note 4. I loved my Note, but figured out, that after a while I didn't need the S-Pen anymore.
The G4 is not as "Productive" as the Note, but comes along with an awesome camera and, if you're rooted and got the right apps on you phone, with a good battery life.
In fact, I'm happy to have changed from Samsung to the G4, but it's surely a question of taste, too. But I can recommend it. I'm super satisfied Cheers

I have no heat problems and as I said: Battery life is good for me. Usually I have 2 days until I have to charge my phone again (If I'm not using it very often).
Otherwise I have to charge it every 24 hours, if I'm using it alot.
I think there's no big difference between the battery life of the Note 4 and the G4. I usually had to charge both phones at night, which is pretty much ok for me.
If I had to make a choice I'd say the LG G4 lasts a little longer (if rooted) Cheers
EDIT: If I'm power using it I get like 5-6 hours SOT, which is also similar to the Note 4
Remember results may vary.
The guy above me is getting 5 -6 hours SOT. But for me I can only achieve that when I am at home on wifi all day. And maybe the same is true for follow_and_feel. So it really depends on your day to day activities.
In a nutshell. If you're in a area with spotty connectivity, battery life will take a huge plummet. On work days my building is in a spotty area, and the phone lasts me until the end of the day with maybe 5-10%. With 3ish hours SOT under my belt. If the network wasn't spotty I'd probably look at 4 hours or more.
The only time I experience heat is under heavy usage, very spotty areas, or while using a garbage app like snapchat. Otherwise on normal day to day use with messaging, browsing, social media, the odd video here and there the phone stays cool.
Camera on this bad boy is out of this world. I've seen some of the shots people have taken and they look very professional. To the average person, they would barely be able to tell the difference between a G4 picture and one taken with a proper camera. The camera is probably the biggest selling point.
Lastly gaming. Gaming is a no no. Battery goes down very fast, and the phone eventually heats up as well. You can get away with some light games like Clash of Clans but don't expect the battery to hold up. The GPU is weaker than it's hot headed older brother (Snapdragon 810). If gaming is very big for you, I'd honestly say get the Note.
Videos is not an issue though. You might get some warmth though but nothing major

How good is the nexus 5x?

I am looking to get a new phone and for a while I've been using a windows phone. The Lumia 640(terrible) to be exact. I then got a galaxy s3 from my friend and forgot just how awesome android is. I was looking to get the s5 but then the nexus 5x caught my eye. Now I know the nexus 5x is mid range but with the newer snapdragon 808 chip and the hexacore processor does it beat the s5 in performance? Both phones have only 2GB of ram and although the s5 does have a higher clock speed i cant help but think the nexus could out perfom it. Has anyone had experience with the two phones? I don't know what I should do.
I would say performance will be similar. Do you care about getting official updates? GS5 is EOL, Nexus 5x is good till Sept of next year.

I do like the fact that the 5x receives updates faster and runs on stock android. If the performance should be similar than I might go with the 5x because of how fast it charges and because it also has the fingerprint scanner. I know the s5 has a scanner but i don't like how you have to swipe

Sigh, that's only like 15 more months of support/updates. I haven't been in this community long enough to know if devs for ROMs continue to take the latest Android source code and make builds for unsupported devices?

They do, just check the Nexus 4 forums, that phone was released almost 4 years ago and has multiple Android 6 ROMs available. Even the Galaxy Nexus, released in November 2011, has a couple available.

That's crazy!!
I own these two phones right now. nexus 5X is only better for camera and stock software experience and fingerprint scanner ....rest everything is better in s5( i.e display, battery, sound/speaker, waterproofing, storage options, camera is not bad either but slow focus) i dont see any difference in real life between snapdragon 801 or 808..Funny thing is i can charge s5 much faster with s6 charger as compare to charging speed of nexus 5x with type c cable

that's the MINIMUM. Nexus 5 got Android M direct from Google and it was past it's EOL date
Does anyone else have anything to say. The thing that really concerns me about the phone is battery life. Is it really as bad as people say? How are colors on the nexus 5x? accurate? and how fast does it really charge?

I get about 5hrs SOT if I let my battery run to 0%-5% which I rarely do. Projecting based off of 12+ hrs on battery with 50% left with 2hrs+ SOT. 15% brightness, location off and WiFi on for 85% of the time. BT for 45 mins with music streaming. So, it's solid battery life for me.

I'm a pretty light user so I get over a day on a charge. GSAM battery monitor says my averages are 1d 5h average per charge with 6h 15m active. It also says my average SOT is about 4h. Those stats are from about 2 weeks ago when I got the phone. I suspect this is the best I will get and as it ages the life will diminish. Compared to the old S3 I came from this is great. For charging I was at about 14% this morning and with the stock charger went from 15% to 85% in one hour of charging. To me that's pretty fast charge.

Battery life lasts a day quite easily, 2 days with lighter usage. It charges very quickly, 25% in just 15 minutes.
More accurate colours than the similar panel used in the iPhone 6s as shown by Anandtech.
You get high end features on this device for a mid range price.

About battery life, i'm a heavy user, everything always on (wifi, GPS, bluetooth, data) and I get 3h - 3h30 with 10 % battery left.
About the screen, I own a Galaxy Note II, and I'm really very happy to leave the flashy amoled screen, Nexus 5X's screen is much better for my eyes and the colors are more accurate. I just miss the deep dark of the amoled
Full charge from 10 % takes about 1 - 1h30, it's really fast.
So the battery life is not so good, not enough to last a day for my use, but I charge it on my car going to work and coming back home with a 2A charger and it's also fast.
It is definitely a solid device. I just picked up the Moto X Pure from Best Buy as a Deal Of The Day for $160 off and the camera is quite similar telling me the X does really have a phenomenal camera. The Marshmallow on the MXP is pretty dang stock as well so can't claim anything for either there but would say that the camera is great on 5X personally and the updates are a huge thing for me as well. Screen is phenomenally accurate on 5X but battery is a huge difference. I get around 5H bone stock on MXP and about 3H on Nexus 5X. They both have to be charged at around 8-10% every night and that is all so just telling you through the full day I'll get around those numbers on each device from normal heavy texting and FB Messenger alongside a lot of Bluetooth Audio from GP Music and maybe 30m each day for calls and not much gaming nor anything over 15m of video playing on FB or YT. I'll tell you as well that the signal seems to be slightly stronger keeping LTE in a tiny bit of more places on the MXP as well. The battery life on N5X is terrible compared to what you'd get BUT you also adapt and don't quite use your phone for the useless junk to compensate for it as well. Hopefully it helps SOMEHOW.
