Custom ROM, changing carrier on a locked phone - need to go back to stock? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I'm running currently running SlimRom 4.4.4 on my phone and want to change carrier from Rogers to {cheaper}.
I've found various unlock instruction for free but everytime I tried them I get errors when it starts USSD. With a bit of digging around I found that they probably only work on stock roms from Samsung. With the newer CRTC ruling Rogers is also required to unlock my phone if I ask them to, but I'm sure they won't have a clue and won't assist me with a custom rom on.
I've found the latest stock rom from Rogers (RWC-I747MVLUFOB1-20150310141610) which is 4.4.2 and was going to flash that using Odin, but then... I found warning about potentially bricking your phone by doing downgrade of Android (from major revision to another).
Is that mostly a problem going from 5.x to 4.x or do I need to take extra precaution to not brick my phone? I'm assuming that the modem and everything stock is in the base rom and I won't have issues afterward?
Appreciate the help!

The free method only works on a completely stock 4.1.1 ROM. If the phone is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader, you will have to purchase an unlock code. The unlock code can only be entered if the phone is running a stock Samsung dialler.
Yes, all Canadian carriers are required to unlock the phone once the phone subsidy has been paid off; however, the carriers are not required to unlock the phone for free. I believe Rogers will charge $50 + tax for the code.
Flashing the FOB1 ROM should not brick the phone. The possiblility of bricking happens when attempting to downgrade the phone's existing bootloader to an earlier version.

I've flashed TWRP on the phone to get my custom roms and rooted, so I'm not sure about my bootloader, did that not change when I flashed to get root or does it stay at the same version in most case?

The bootloader will not change when flashing TWRP. It is unlikely that a custom ROM would include a bootloader and, in fact, I have never come across a d2lte/d2can/d2att ROM that alters the bootloader or modem/baseband.

Good to hear! I'll flash back to stock tonight and get it unlocked then. Considering going with Koodoo and I think they do it for $35 but I'll try Rogers first.

I would order a code off ebay. Cost me $17 CAD for a Rogers code.

Many thanks that worked like a charm and I'm now back on stock 4.4.2... got a scare when Odin lost connection mid way! but I restarted the process using another USB cable/port and it went through no problem.
I've checked with rogers and it is indeed $50 to unlock, quite expensive!
I've found some reseller on eBay and will likely go with that. How does that work anyway, do you know? It seems fishy, but their sellers rating are mostly all good. I suppose there's no danger in sharing my IMEI?

I have used these people several times: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Unlock-Code-...Rogers-Fido-/131547835629?hash=item1ea0dcaced
Cost is only $14 and takes a few hours to get the code.
Just purchase the item and include a note to the seller with the phone's imei, model #, and carrier.

How do I unlock the phone? I currently have Cm11 on it.
I want to ditch rogers (terrible service) so what do I need to do to unlock it?
side note, when I got the phone it was via future-shop warranty and they gave me a fido version and put my rogers sim in it, did they unlock it then?

Since Fido is really owned by Rogers, your Rogers SIM may work in the phone if it was originally locked to Fido. To check whether it's unlocked or not, try putting in a non-compatible SIM (like Bell or Telus) and see whether it prompts you for an unlock code. If it does, you would need to purchase a code online or request one from the carrier. If it wasn't on Android 4.3 prior to the CM11 installation, you may be able to install stock Android 4.1.1 and free unlock. Either way, whether you are free unlocking or using an unlock code, you have to be on a stock ROM for it work. You can check your phone's settings and see what baseband and bootloader versions you have. This will tell us know whether you should flash stock 4.1.1 or 4.3

I747MVLUEMK5 is ver. 4.3 and you almost certainly have the 4.3 bootloader as well. With this, unfortunately, you can't downgrade to 4.1.1 where the free unlock option is available as any attempt to do this could brick your phone. You would need to request an unlock code from the carrier, if eligible, or purchase one online. There have been reports also that the unlock codes don't work when you are on a custom ROM so if you buy one online and it doesn't work, you will have to flash stock 4.3.

ok, which carrier would I have to talk to, it was a fido phone as mentioned previously. Also is their a possibility I could downgrade to 4.1, or is it a guaranteed brick?

You would need to contact Fido since it was originally on their network. I'm afraid nobody has yet posted a method to allow you successfully downgrade to 4.1.1 and still preserve the free unlock functionality. You could follow some instructions posted in this forum to downgrade to 4.1.1. However, this wouldn't allow you downgrade the bootloader/modem which is required for the unlock.

I found a way to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.1 or 4.0.4 stock. (for Bell).
I bought and used Mobile Odin (available on the play store). Anyhow, it flashes the stock rom and not the old bootloaders. Once you're on 4.1.1 or 4.0.4 the problem is that *#197328640# no longer works. Basically when you type that ServiceMode comes up, but all the options are gone. I believe this is because they locked those features on the new bootloader (which is still on the phone after the Mobile Odin downgrade...)
Unlocking this phone has become a major pain in the ass.

You are quite right. Sam and the networks are winning this time. You can indeed use Mobile Odin to downgrade the system (ROM). However, there hasn't been any reports of a successful downgrade of the bootloader. Therefore, even if you downgrade without bricking the phone, you can't free unlock. Tough but you will need a carrier unlock code.

[Q] I have a Bell Galaxy S3 with Cyanogenmod, I'm hoping to unlock it.

Hiya,
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3 locked to Bell, and I have installed Cyanogenmod 11.
I'd like to unlock it and give it to a friend.
My questions are:
1. If I unlock this phone, will it work with Zoomer Mobile? It's a subsidiary of Rogers. I would imagine it would work, I just want to make sure.
2. I've read somewhere that Cyanogenmod causes problems with unlocking, is that true? Will I have to go back to stock firmware in order to unlock it, then go back to CM11?
3. I can't seem to find any information about unlocking through Cyanogenmod... anyone have a link to a guide of some sort?
Thanks in advance for any help!
am pretty sure you have to be on stock firmware to use free unlock method. will try to search around with for more info

Thanks, thats great to know! My bootloader version is I747MVLUEMK5.
Thanks for all the links mrrocketdog, looks like everything I need to start unlocking!
Since you are on the MK5 bootloader, you will have to flash back to stock, purchase an unlock code, unlock the phone, and flash back to your custom ROM.

Which version of stock, though? I can't remember what the phone came with since it was so long ago... I think it was something like 4.1 , but I'm not sure. Since I've since updated to 4.3/4.4, I'm also worried about bricking my device, because I've heard that flashing earlier roms with newer bootloaders can do that.
Which version of stock should I go with then? Thanks in advance!
Confirm that you have an i747m with mk5 bootloader and baseband. This can be done by using the Play app called Samsung Phone Info.
The stock i747m firmware is available on sammobile.com. Just search for the Bell sgh-i747m 4.3 ROM. You can flash it using Odin. Do NOT check anything except auto reboot and F.reset time. I recommend using Odin 3.07 and backing up your important data to your computer as flashing with Odin will wipe your phone.

[Q] Sim unlock on custom ROM. Tmobile support not being helpful.

So I'm currently in Europe and I will be here for 2 more months and I would like to unlock my phone because $4.19 a minute is ridiculous. However tmobile support is being, let's say very smart. The first representative said "just visit you're nearest tmobile store and we'll help you out there." After I had already told them I was in a country without tmobile. So I was wondering if there was any way to do this for free? I really don't want to have to spend any more money right now. I'm currently running liquidsmooth lollipops latest build. And I really don't want to have to revert to stock because I currently have Internet speeds of 85kb/s and that would take ages to download and then reset up my phone. All help is greatly appreciated.

Which version should i downgrade to, and could you give me a like to a method of unlocking it?
Before flashing any TW ROMs via Odin, confirm the bootloader and modem on your phone.
I'm not sure but if the T999 is like the i747 (ATT s3 version), you cannot downgrade the bootloader from 4.3 to a lower version. Doing so may brick the phone.
If you are on a 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 bootloader, you should be able to downgrade to stock 4.1.1 and you may be able to unlock for free using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
If you cannot downgrade to stock 4.1.1, you'll need to buy an unlock code and enter it using a stock Samsung dialler.

The bootloader is not locked on the AT&T S3 (I747). You can use Odin to flash a custom recovery and flash any ROMs for d2att/d2lte you want. No unlocking required. It is a pretty modder friendly phone.
The thing you cannot do on the newer bootloaders is downgrade the bootloader. Attempts to downgrade anything beyond the 4.3 bootloader will result in a hard brick. This also prevents you from using the free sim unlocking method because it involves a firmware downgrade to 4.1. If you need to sim unlock the phone to use it on a different network you'll have to get a code from AT&T (they should provide one since a phone this old just about has to be off contract) or purchase one from a third party.

I concur with @jason2678
I have an AT&T SGS3 (d2att/i747) that is on the NE4 bootloader and modem (4.4.2) and am running CM11 atm. As a matter of fact, none of the CM or AOSP roms since late in 4.4.2 development will run unless you are on one of the 4.4.2 bootloaders (NE4, NJ1, NJ2)
What you stated, quoted above, is true for the Verizon SGS3 (d2vzw/i535).

It appears that you have an NE4/Android4.4.2/KitKat rom installed over 4.3 bootloader and modem. I have seen several custom TouchWiz roms that run fine with this setup as long as one of a couple of custom kernels were installed. CM and AOSP roms will also run in this condition. BUT, from what I have read you will not be able to use the unlock codes. My reading indicates that you must be on complete stock ROM for the code to work, including stock recovery instead of CWM. ALSO, what I have read says that you only gt five attempts before the code becomes invalid.
I don't know why your phone is not asking for the unlock code, unless it has already been carrier unlocked. Even thouhg it is not asking for the code, does it function as it should?
Frequently the service modes do not work on custom roms, even TW based ones, because they are not using the stock dialers. I have also seen it reported that some were disabled with the 4.3 update and others in more recent updates.
Proceed carefully.
You may be able to enter the unlock code if the phone is running a stock dialler with a matching bootloader and modem combination.

I had this phone since 3 years ago (new from ATT) and rooted stock rom with CWM 6.0.4.7 recovery touch . and I remember that I could unlocked through SERVICE MODE when I was overseas. ( sure I had used this phone with Other carrier) about 1 year ago I put this phone in my drawer I did factory reset and installed Stock firmware and update OTA to 4.3.
Last week I want to use this phone with Tmobile SIM but got Phone Not Allowed MM#6 message . The rom was still 4.3, Contact AT&T and got Unlock code.
but this phone didn't ask for unlock code entry option and still 4.3 , tried the whole weekend with service mode and upgrade to 4.4.2 via CWM recovery.
and still no luck
With your suggestion , it means that I don't have choice to downgrade back to 4.3 rom same with my bootloader and baseband? I heard we can't downgrade if we already in 4.4.2 , is that true?
But I still use stock recovery from CWM.
Before I proceed with replacing with stock recovery, is the stock recovery have to be 4.3 stock recovery or any version for S3? do I need to use odin to change to stock recovery?
if you have good link please help?
Thanks again

Stock dialer means the entire Rom must be replaced to match my bootloader and modem combination or just replace the dialer in my case and still use 4.4.2?
Appreciated if you can help, thanks
Stock dialler requires a stock Samsung kernel.
From what I am seeing, you are on the 4.3 bootloader and modem. As I said before, there are custom TouchWiz 4.4.2 Roms that will run on the 4.3 bootloader and modem. Changing to a 4.3 rom, stock or otherwise, therefore would not be downgrading your bootloader and modem.
What rom are you on?
Some of the custom TouchWiz roms use dialers from the S5, therefore not stock for the S3.
Some of the custom TouchWiz Roms use the stock kernel, some use a custom kernel.
Did you flash a custom kernel?
What is your kernel version? (check under Settings > About Phone)
With the answers to the questions I asked, audit13 and I may be able to give more definite guidance. It could be as simple as flashing the stock kernel and a stock dialer. But, I can't tell at the moment.

Are you saying you unlocked it before? If so it should still be unlocked. Flashing/wiping won't affect that, so it's pretty much a permanent thing. If so, maybe the Sim card you're using is an older one? they don't always work on tmobiles networks.

if I flashed with inserted active SIM Card (T Mobile or foreign SIM Card)
I will see PHONE NOT ALLOWED MM#6 after reboot
if I flashed without any SIM Card inserted after reboot :

I will have AT&T as roaming provider and for about few seconds received text message about fee from SIM issuer roaming to AT&T so means My S3 is unlocked...

I just replaced CWM recovery with UCUFNE4 stock recovery
I did unroot with SuperSU and also

basically my phone just as new factory setting but with UCUFNE4

as I have stated at my 1st post that I had official unlock code from AT&T and got email from them the unlock PIN
but there is no option asking to key in the PIN with other carrier sim inserted .
I have checked also with Swappa esn check
and result is

This device does not appear to be globally blacklisted.
spent countless hours just to beat solving this device and read the threads and no result. And still "PHONE NOT ALLOWED MM#6"

Returning to stock rom from CM 12.1 to Android 4.2.2

Hello
I am currently running CM 12.1 on my SGS3 i747m.
I want to return back to stock rom, the current version offered by Rogers is Kit Kat 4.2.2.
Is this considered a downgrade? (from CM 12..1 to Android 4.2.2) Will I brick my device?
Is returning back to stock rom the only way I can network unlock my phone?
1) it is a downgrade in android versions (lollipop to kitkat. not bootloader/modem).
2) no , will not brick your device as long as not downgrading bootloader/modem.
3) what is your current bootloader/modem version ? (if unsure , you can DL the "samsung info" app from playstore and it will tell you).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609045
here's the xda thread for that.
4) i belive its the only free method. i think you can pay for an unlock code and not have to return to stock.
5) if returning to stock , here are directions posted by @audit13

"err on the side of kindness"
So you're telling me I do not have to revert back to stock in order to network unlock? =D
That was my only reason for reverting back to the stock rom.
correct. but i've never had to unlock one so i wouldnt know where to go or how much the code cost.

***update: i just bought an unlock code
didn't work. my phone says perso lock.
sigh
if i revert my phone back to stock rom, does the recovery have to be reverted too? or it's all good.
Recovery can be custom or stock. You need to revert to the stock Samsung dialler in order to enter an unlock code.
Easiest method would be to flash the latest 4.4.2 stock Rogers rom from sammobile.com, skip through the set up, power off, insert non-Rogers sim, boot phone, enter unlock code, done.
could I install stock rom via recovery or does it have to be through Odin?
so... I tried to install the stock rom via Odin3 as instructed on Sammobile... but it gets stuck in the glowing Samsung logo during boot.
any ideas?
try thru recovery :what:

Did you perform a factory reset/wipe in stock recovery before booting the phone with the newly-flashed rom?

i tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...13-nightly-t3356062/post66306367#post66306367
and doesn't help =(
Are there any error messages in Odin? You're flashing the correct firmware?

So I went back to flash the latest stock firmware... and I was able to access the recovery and wipe cache and then factory reset/wipe! it worked!
=D
but I am having the same problem I started. I couldn't unlock my phone.
I entered the unlock code I got from MobileInCanada.com... and it still doesn't work.
I see that there is a free method for Android 4.1.1.
I am currently running Android 4.4.2
From Phone INFO app
Bootloader Version/PDA/CSC/Baseband: I747MWLUFOB3
Do you think I can revert back to Android 4.1.1 and try the free method? Or should I complain to the MobileInCanada about unlock code not working. Seeing as it looks like going back to stock, everything should be easy as pie to network unlock.
So you flashed back to a completely stock rom, inserted a foreign SIM card, you were prompted to enter the network unlock code, and it didn't work?
The imei in the phone matches the imei provided to mobileincanada? I have used mobileincanada but it was a long time ago. I get all my unlock codes from eBay because it's cheaper.
Do not attempt to flash any rom that is 4.3 or older as attempts to do so may hard brick the phone. Once an i747m is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader, the phone can only be unlocked with a code.

Yes! completely right! I inserted my foreign SIM card, entered the unlock code from MobileInCanada and it didn't work.
I double/triple checked the IMEI.
Mobileincanada has a very good reputation. I recommend contacting them for a refund or have them resend the code.
Thank you!
would it be a different code?
If you supply the same imei, the code should be the same. Perhaps mobileincanada looked for the wrong imei in the unlock database.
