On-screen buttons using buid.props results in an empty bar - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a Samsung tablet (SM-T800) and I have it rooted running the stock rom. I really want to enable on-screen buttons and disable the hardware buttons (I keep hitting them by accident all the time when I read comic books. I hate them).
So all the instructions I've see have invovled editing the
Code:
build.prop
and adding
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
. When I do that and reboot, I get a black bar at the bottom of the screens in most of my apps with no buttons on it. I assume this is the on-screen nav bar, but for some reason, all the buttons (Home, back, app select) are missing. I know on my phone where I run Cyanogen, you can customize which buttons show up. I was wondering if this was configurable somewhere and if, in Samsung's stock rom, they disable all of them? Or is it something else entirely?
What am I missing?

If you have xposed there is a great app called Ultimate Dynamic Navbar 23.2 that will allow you to have the navbar in portrait or landscape.
To disable the hard keys you need to edit Generic.kl in system/usr/keylayout

xposed says the framework isn't supported on my architecture. Surely this has to just be a setting somewhere in the stock rom?

Wrong framework, you need Arter97 builds and a deodexed rom.

Yea, I don't want to do that. I have the stock rom setup the way I want. I really don't want to wipe it. Surely there must be a way to get the on screen buttons working on the stock rom?

[MOD][ROOT][4.2.2](updated 03-09)SystemUI's Soft Keys Enabled, Transparent Bar Etc.;)

Did you notice that samsung disabled the soft keys in its 4.2.2 "update"?
Whenever one adds the line:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
in the build.prop and reboot then the systemui constantly forces close, thanks to samsung aka sam sucks:cyclops:
I don't know for you guys, but as for me I was annoyed cuz I can't live without soft keys. So I modded the SystemUi, and while I was at it I made the notification bar transparent, and put some green (my favorite color) here and there. Then I thought that some people may be interested, and that's why I share it here...
DISCLAIMER
I'm not responsible if anything happens, do a backup just in case.
INSTALLATION
You need to be rooted, and of course to be on 4.2.2
1-using your favorite root browser add in your build.prop:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
when done don't forget to set the perms to rw, r, r
2-go to recovery and install the zip
3-before to leave recovery wipe dalvik cache and cache
4-reboot, now you have a transparent notification bar, some nice green and soft keys.
The keys look pretty big, if it disturbs you then change your phone's DPI. As for me I use 110 for the whole phone, 160 for Android System and 130 for SystemUI, but it works with other settings, see which one fits you the best.
Have a look at the screenshoot below to see if this SystemUI inspires you...
You will notice an arrow on the left, it's there cuz I have good hopes to enable the mini tray drawer as an alternative multiwindows launcher. If I don't manage then I'll remove this arrow in a further version.
Edit 1:
Actually I don't like this unuseful arrow, and after all it's not so much work to remove it, so I made an other version without it.
Now you can choose, with or without arrow...
There is still room for some minor improvements and I'll do it when I have time, but for now I want to concentrate on making a Floating Multi Windows mod...
Edit 2:
I made 2 more versions.
I colored the soft keys, and I have made the separation between the notification toggles transparent, have a look at the screenshots and see if you like it.
One version has holes above the soft keys, the zip is labeled ColoredNoArrowSoftKeys.
The second version doesn't have the holes but has blueish lines instead, the zip is labeled V2ColoredNoArrowSoftKeys.
Enjoy!
Sir you solved my confusion...
I changed dpi thn added softkey syntax in built prop... what i got was loops..
I blamed pit file of leaked rom.. n till today.
Now I got cleared that softkey is disabled in 4 2 2
Uncle fab you are fabulous.. Thanks
To err is human; to forgive is divine
Few questions
Can you provide stock system ui app?
Can I remove phone, dialer and replace it with third party apps?
I saw navigation right left keys on softly bar when keyboard in active in k2wl rom. Is that possible on your mod?
To err is human; to forgive is divine
Stock systemui, yeah, sure, but why? If you don't want the soft keys just disable the build prop line. Or maybe you want to mod it?
Anyway, here it is...
It's possible to change the keys order of course, you just have to decompile the app and remap, easy.
Phone apk you can't remove as far as I know cuz then you don't have any connectivity anymore (I didn't try with this rom though, but I had with previous ones). Stock dialer, maybe, I never thought about it actually, thanks for the idea!
I will see this when I revert back to 4.1.2 in as few days, cuz this 4.2.2 goes more and more on my nerves, it's not an upgrade but a downgrade!
Edit:
the first time the systemui pretended it was uploaded but it wasn't, so I tried again and here it is.
Before to flash anything always have a look at what's inside the zip. First to make sure that you are ok with the files inside, second to learn, and third to make a backup of your original files.
Same here... 4.2.2 is head ache.. I will revert too. 4.2.2 seems unfinished yet.
I need system ui to compare both apk n learn. But I'm enough with 4.2.2.

Yes.. I learned that late.. I cursed me after finding that I could have backup.
Thanks but I will revert back after getting reason for considering 4.2.2 as downgrade

Previous post updated with the app...
Why a downgrade?
Higher ram consumption, no more floating multiwindows, sooooo much bloatware (a new record, I removed like 170 or 180 stock apks), google's latest spyware aka fusedlocation.apk that one can't get rid of, incompatibilities with xprivacy, lags with my favorite file manager, can't remove some unuseful xmls (well, for me they are unuseful but for google they help spying, in 4.1.2 I had removed all that trash), annoying persistent notification if I disable background sync, etc...
Actually it's not grand related, it's a 4.2.2 problem, I had some of those issues with my tab running cm 10.1 and you know what?
I reverted to 4.1.2 on my tab, such a relief!!!:silly:
I hope it will get better with 4.3 and 5+ but i'm not very confidend about it, at least when it comes to bloatware and spyware, it's the direction google and samsung follow, you remember the discussion we had a while ago...

I do remember. I get tired of blocking white collar spy wares.. Mr. GOOGLE... Blocking them makes system unstable.
I doubted on fusedlocation as it was present in all roms here... Aopk cm10.1...
Means 4.2.2 is loaded with monitoring system.? I removed bloatware but they were 70... Hence, I could figure out just half! Uncle fab provide list of apps which can be removed in a separate thread. I'm very much aware that you made in post but a thread will be handy...
Another queries....
Will battery usage improve in 4.1.2 ?
Is your multi window mod in 4.1.2 bug free?
Can you add navigation option in your soft key bar?
To err is human; to forgive is divine
I will make a thread about safe to remove apps for 4.2.2 in a few days when I have time.
Regarding battery I can't tell for sure cuz in the last days I spent most of my grand time doing settings, removing trash, trying (without any success so far) to implement multi windows and thus rebooting all the time... But since ram consumption is lower in 4.1.2 probably 4.1.2 has a better battery life.
The multi windows mode on 4.1.2 is bug free once set, but at first you have to set dpis properly.
Add navigation key in the soft keys bar? What do you mean? You mean adding other keys? I think it's possible to add the search key, but I don't know about other keys like camera, app drawer (this one is touch wiz dependant so if you use another launcher it won't work anyway, even on a Rom that supports it like let's say the tabs) or screenshots. It depend if it's supported or not (if the function is built in then it's just a matter to find the line and enable it, but if it's not supported then I'm not sure if one can trigger it).
As for me I would like to trigger real tablet ui (the notification bar merged with the navigation bar in the bottom), but I know that Samsung has disabled it on the grand and with this 4.2.2 "upgrade" I didn't have time to check further. Be insured that I will as soon as I'm done with 4.2.2...
I want real tablet ui.. Navigation keys are activated in Aokp as soon as keyboard pops up..
I really found that interesting.. May be deodexed rom can achieve it...
Edit..
I found that your 4.1.2 multiwindows mod works better on deodexed rom. Is there any way that I can convert my stock rom to deodexed rom?
To err is human; to forgive is divine
I don't follow you.
When one has the soft keys enabled it means that the keys are always active.
I'm not a big fan of custom roms (and to be honest I have always been disappointed with the ones I tried), for me the best is a bug free stock rom with everything working. Rooted, deodexed and debloated of course.
Regarding deodex, if you want to use floating multi windows on your grand, and if you want to theme your systemui etc. you need to be on a deodexed rom. You've probably noticed that the modded systemui in op is deodexed, if it hadn't ben nothing would have been possible...
Edit:
yes, the floating windows work better with a deodexed rom. If you don't know how to do it on your own it's a good opportunity to learn
Otherwise search the forum, there are some deodexed 4.1.2 roms...
When I get back to 4.1.2 I will try to improve those floating windows a bit, but first I want to try to make it work on 4.2.2.
Not working for Me
i have 4.2.2 rom and rooted
flash through CWM but wipe cache but nothing happen why
You are on stock 4.2.2?
Nothing happens? No transparent notification bar?
To have the soft keys you have to add
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
in your build.prop, otherwise the soft keys won't show, did you read op?
@DBZo07:
I went back to 4.1.2, this 4.2.2 is not for me. So I won't make a thread about safe to remove apps, but you can use the one I wrote for 4.1.2 cuz it's the same, except that you can't remove fusedlocation.apk. Don't forget to make a backup just in case

System UI Tuner is disabled

Hello i have an HTC 10 but Hidden System UI Tuner seems to be disabled, I've tried the "long press on Gear icon" but does not work also tried with developer mode enabled/disable also with the animations as I've read in some posts, any idea?
Ive rooted all my past phones about 10 different ones but I want to keep this locked for warranty.
Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, HTC has disabled the feature.
You would need to decompile the systemui.apk and edit the smali code, then recompile it, in order to get back the feature.
You can use GravityBox on Xposed to make some quick settings changes (I use it myself), or depending on your version you may find people who've already modded the systemui.apk (no US versions, mostly EU).
BTW rooting should not void your warranty nor keep you from system updates (it's systemless these days).

I use GravityBox and I have two tiles (Calculator tile and Extreme Power Saver tile) that I cannot remove from Quicksettings... Do you have the same problem? Do you have a solution to remove those two tiles maybe? Or maybe know about modified SystemUI.apk with System UI Tuner enabled so I can replace apk with stock one?
Any help is appreciated and thank you...

Yeah I have the same problem. Because of how HTC hard coded the quicksettings we cannot get rid of those 2. There appear to be default quick settings tile options in default.xml but I've not played with it enough to know if it allows changing the default tiles.
Because of all the updated base's there hasn't been an updated systemui.apk from anyone in some time. I personally am not smali proficient to reverse and fix it myself.
Several of the custom ROMs have this enabled.

[MODv3] [NMF26V] NavBar Tuner, Additional QS Tile Rows, NavBar DPI - TWRP Flashable

**I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES TO YOUR DEVICE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK**
**UPDATE v3 2017.01.04**
I've updated the mod to NMF26V. NMF26V increased the size of the NavBar to a ridiculous 48dpi, so I've had to add mod intermediate steps. I've also added 0dpi/0dpi, as some people have requested this. So far, I've tested each version and it has worked, but if you find an issue, let me know and I'll fix it. You can always return to stock.
The mods that can be applied are:
NavBar/StatusBar dpi
0dpi/0dpi
0dpi/20dpi
0dpi/24dpi
32dpi/24dpi
32dpi/20dpi
36dpi/24dpi
36dpi/20dpi
40dpi/24dpi
40dpi/20dpi
44dpi/24dpi
44dpi/20dpi
48dpi/20dpi

**UPDATE**
I've now used Aroma to make a TWRP flashable zip making this much easier to install.
Now in order to install, simply download the Stranula.Full.Flash.v2.zip reboot to TWRP recovery, install the zip, and select which mods you want. You can only select one SystemUIGoogle.apk and one framework-res.apk to install. I've also now included the stock apks, so you can easily revert back.
Download Stranula.Full.Flash.v2.zip
**/Update**
Coming from Galaxy devices, I got used to the "Back" button on the right and the "Recents" button on the left of the device, and have been trying to figure out a way to do this on the Pixel.
After looking at [MOD] - WETA UI Mods - [3MinitBattery][NavTuner][centerclock][navbarheight], I knew this had the answer, but I couldn't get it to work on NMF26Q, so after a bit of googling, I found this [MOD][GUIDE] Enable Navbar Tuner for Nougat [7.0] which gave me what I needed to make the mod myself. Finally, thanks to help from fritzgerald I also now know how to add the full battery % in the status bar instead of the battery icon (more details here [GUIDE] Add Battery % to Statusbar ! [Updated Stock 2.3+, CM9/10/10.1 etc -28.9.14])
I made 3 versions, and unless someone suggests a change that I would personally use, I do not intend to make any other changes, or respond to requests.
SystemUIGoogle-NavBar+Brightness.apk has the modifcation to add NavBar Tuner to the SystemUI Tuner as well as the option to remove the brightness slider from the dropdown.
SystemUIGoogle-NavBar+Brightness+4Tile.apk has the same, but additionally, when the full QS is pulled down, it will display 4 columns instead of 3.
SystemUIGoogle-NavBar+Brightness+4Tile+BatteryMod.apk has the same, but additionally has the battery % in the statusbar.

It's an old mod, I just pulled it in to this framework. Haven't really modded since my SGS2 but figured I'd start it up again. Feel free to shoot a PM if you ever get stuck and want a second set of eyes.
I've updated this mod with a TWRP flashable zip file containing all of the mods in one. I don't have any testers, so I've only tested it myself, and so far everything is working.
If you happen to use these mods, and the installer, please let me know if everything works, or if you experience any problems.

I'm really only proficient enough to implement changes other people have done the work to figure out. I was a bit more involved a couple of years ago, and this is my first jump into modding Nougat, so I'm still trying to refamiliarize myself. That being said, if you can point me to guides for Mods of interest, I can try to implement them.

I haven't tried. My #1 recommendation is to update then install. However, if that was what you wanted to do, you wouldn't have asked.
So, my #2 recommendation is to go into TWRP, mount system, open file manager, rename /system/system/framework/framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.bkk and /system/system/priv-app/SystemUIGoogle/SystemUIGoogle.apk to SystemUIGoogle.apk.bkk.
Now you've backed up your original files. Install my mods and reboot. If they work, awesome, let us know. If they do not, boot back into TWRP and restore your original files, then come back here and let us know.

immersive nav bar for Stock Oreo.

Hello guys. I just wanna share my humble contribution to Xz xda community.
Today i'm uploading a mod that "remove" navbar add the possibilty to add a immersive navbar like LG G3 does.
I'm not responsable if my mod brinks your device (I hope it don't do it). Keeps the ftf file near by. Lol
I'm not ready to give the respective credits to guys that help did this mod. Next step I will.
You Will need install simple control or any other softkeys program to add a immersive navbar Before apply my patch, because you Will have no navbar to configure privileges and other stuffs after flash it.
Don't use a diferent immersive mod version that your stock rom or you Will get an infinite crash pop-ups....
Install method:
Flash zip in twrp recovery as any other flashable zip.
Expect that someone enjoy it!
Screenshot:
New release for last stock firmware:
Now I create an all "immersive" bar mod. No status bar. If you wanna invoke it, you can configure the navbar shortcut to do it!
Updated to last stock firmware: 99.

Were you actually able to substitute the navbar, or just make it disappear, like in immersive mode? Are you on Oreo?
Hey Guys,
I just wanted to inform you that there is an app on the play store, that does the same thing
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zacharee1.systemuituner
I updated the mod to the Last stock firmware 107.

Dear 888Leander, all mods that I have tested cause a incredible lsgs tô wake up screen. Sometimes I need to force restart my Phone to access my apps. This get me a so angry.
After all, all programs take enable immersive Mode don't give me all screen space: eg: home screen and Facebook.
Note the bluebar at screen bottom.
So I prefer to apply a mod that remove navbar snd statusbar once for all and add a "immersive navbar".
This is my prefer setup. Maybe your is good for you.

Navigation Bar Tweak?

Hi,
I already have my system ROOTed, Xposed installed.
Any specific Xposed modules or app / etc. people recommends that work on Tab S4 that would allow me to tweak the navigation bar?
For now I just want to switch the order, as I'm used to have back button on the left.
Thanks for the advices.
Test & Error so far
GravityBox [O] v8.3 Xposed Module - Works with system, but NOT able to re-arrange/swap order (still same after reboot)
Android NavBar Buttons v6.3 Xposed Module - no work, will prompt Samsung system UI error.
You can change the order of the buttons in Settings -> Display -> Navigation Bar. At the bottom you will find "Button layout"
Mine is Tab S4 standard/not rooted
