Charging cable dimensions - compatible charging stands? - Huawei Watch

Seeming that the apple watch charger looks very similar to the Huawei Watch got me thinking that some of the charging stands for the Apple Watch may be compatible.
For instance something like this:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/olixar-apple-watch-aluminum-charging-display-stand-silver-p53498.htm
I found the dimensions of the Apple Watch charger to be 27.5mm wide and 7mm thick, maybe someone can confirm how the Huawei Watch charger compares.

According to a user on reddit it's 36 mm in diameter, 9 mm thick, with a stiffened USB cord coming out at the 3 o'clock position which is itself 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm long.

I bought an Apple charging stand to try it out. The dimensions aren't even close. First, the hole needs to be a lot larger than the Apple stands have. 2nd, you need to ensure that the cable is on the right side of the stand (for those with closed watchbands anyway).
Hopefully, someone makes a shapeways cad drawing. There are a couple of cad drawings completed for Makerbot 3d printers already, but that does no good without access to a Makerbot.

Some people on Reddit already printed a few designs along with some others:
1. http://m.imgur.com/a/m94iB
2. Stand adapter http://m.ebay.com/itm/Huawei-Watch-Charging-Adapter-Fits-Any-iWatch-Stand-/252105188385?nav=SEARCH
3. http://m.imgur.com/a/VczLm
4. http://m.imgur.com/a/Dhx0B

An adapter like this can also be used. Unfortunately the shipping makes it twice as expensive for people in Europe. It would be great if some factory in China started to produce something like that.

Here's mine I got from one of the reddit guys who did the 360 type one as well. I think I paid 16 bux shipped for it and he did an amazing job. Well worth it and still use it today.

Edit: I'm going to see if there's a way to modify the stand so the charger sits flush in it. If I find a way I'll post pictures in here

Here is what I bought
The Watch stand includes a circle for the apple charger but it is too small. I figured it was wood and could make it bigger, but I ended up getting creative. I flipped the watch holder upside-down and flipped/reversed it so the opening is on the inside (phone side). Basically flipped it 180 degrees horizontally.
This way has the hole for the apple watch charger at the bottom where I run my cables out through the bottom. Then I just have the Huawei charger sitting on top of the flat surface. I haven't decided if I wanted to glue or tape it down because I travel often. But after a few days of the watch charging on it, the wire has rested and it now sits flat on its own.
The phone charger grooves are useless for me. It doesn't allow the phone to charge while standing vertical. It would work in landscape, but I Wireless Charge my LG G4 anyway, so I just placed my Qi Charging puck on top of the grooves. Overall I am happy with it and the price ($14) can't really be beat.

That's a good idea! Have you thought about drilling out a hole underneath where the phone sits for the cable to come through? Maybe if it's drilled at an angle to match the angle the phone sits at it would keep the cable nice and straight. Maybe widen the hole for the watch charger so that it sits in the hole too.
I might pick one up to try out

Beginning the journey of Wireless Charging

So I'm really missing wireless charging after having stuffed it into my GS3 and the Nexus 4 obviously having it built in. So... being that I still had 2 chargers and 2 pads left over, I've decided to begin modding the Moto X after seeing there was quite a bit of room in the bottom of the phone under the battery cover when I was replacing the woven black with a MotoMaker back. Here's the pre-fitting photos. I had to trim some of the foam away at the bottom, and still need to trace where exactly to place the wires for the charging. I'm guessing I'll have to solder directly to the back of the USB port. Where it sits will be a perfect angle, and should not interfere with NFC at all (Yay google wallet!)

You can get them on ebay now. Been eyeing getting one but waiting for the wood backs.
Well this is awesome man...!!!!! :good:
Wow, god speed. I don't yet have a Moto X (still holding out for a wood back) but I'm so used to using those Palm wireless chargers on my current phone (SGS)! I have one at work and one at home on my nightstand. It's a perfect angle of inclination for my preference and the wireless charging works great. Are you having any problems putting the phone back together? I know they don't leave much room in there for something as thick as one of these chargers. And I guess if I eventually get the wood back that probably wouldn't make for an easy time getting it off :-/
I'd like to do this too, which coil receiver do you recommend?

The one he is using in the images uses the Palm Touchstone charger, you can find a bunch of applicable coils on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/palm-wireless-charging I am fairly certain that this coil will only work on that Touchstone and is not compatible with QI or Powermat.
edit: I also highly recommend buying some tiny magnets (I bought 1/4" by 1/32" circular ones) instead of the metal disks that are included so you can get it to snap a lot better to the stand.
thanks
Anyone trying this should aim to have the charging coil as close to the camera as possible, the antennas are all in the lower back of the unit and you won't want to block them at all.
I have been looking at some wireless charging options myself. One of them is a small pad that should fit under most soft cases, it has a thin ribbon cable with a very low profile micro usb connector on the end. The better option is something like that but integrated internally. I haven't opened a Moto X yet to see how much space there is. What is the maximum thickness we can hope to have, is there anywhere near 1mm if we remove the silicone pad?
Everything I am looking at is Qi compatible.
I have also been studying high-res pictures of the inside of the Moto X looking for possible solder points for power, doesn't look too friendly at this point.

There is plenty of room towards the bottom and the silicone is maybe a mm in the thickest area. Insofar as blocking the antenna, I've never had issues with my sgs3 or note 2 with putting the coil over the antenna. However, with regards to solder points, you are right. This is not going to be easy without fully disassembling and finding either the microUSB solder points or the charging circuits entry points from the microUSB. I may be abandoning this if that's the case.

That looks like it would be perfect to slip between the phone and a case, would bending it to conform to the back of the phone affect it's charging ability though? Or would it even be able to be bent?

So how would one check to see which of the 4 prongs connected to the ribbon going to the battery are the correct +/- terminals. I've been studying over the iFixIt.com images to come up with a plan and I think if I can get a random wireless charging coil from eBay then cut that ribbon to fit into the 2 needed ports for the battery ribbon, then the only thing would be size/fitment under the back cover.

It shouldn't matter. As long as the plug is in, and the pad is near the wireless charger.
This is kinda smart; can't believe this isn't widely known. I've never seen something like this.

Super strong magnetic car dock

Hello all, just got my parents the Moto G for Christmas and I went ahead and got them this car dock. It's super strong! The circular metal plate that comes with the dock is thin enough to slip in between the back cover and the battery. All I did was add a drop of super glue to keep it from moving around. Obviously it won't charge, you'll need to buy a standard car adapter, but for $25, I'm very impressed!

I don't think so. I use a Nexus 5 with a LG Qi charger with some glued in neodymium magnets and I haven't had a problem with charging, reception, or battery. Of course that doesn't have a metal plate behind it. But with the Moto G, the metal plate wouldn't be touching the phone (presumably where the antennas lie), only the plastic back cover
Sadly the UK amazon & eBay don't seem to have any, I'll have to see if the US Amazon ship to UK

I use a "wonder holder" her in the UK, same premise strong magnet, metal plate (although wonder holder's is smaller and neater)
Costs £5 from any petrol station pretty much. Seen them everywhere.

I don't think that will work. There is a magnet placed in the phone too.
at least it works with my MotoG. You just have to specify a range of values that triggers the car mode (with and without the 'trigger_magnet'.

actually I already tested it without the car. (put the magnets freely on a big steel plate, small layer of a used balloon rubber over them for traction. On the phone I only put a small layer of steel behind the cover, that's all.
during the test I just tapped the phones to the rubberized magnets and started to move the big steel plate in every direction with increasing force. It did hold even with putting so much force that could throw the phone like 20 meters.
Now I just need my car back from the shop so I can fit the holder to its final place.
If you are interested I can check for the exact type of magnets and provide screenshots about the final product

I'm not sure about it.
I've seen a video where a guy test the magnet's strength with a whole bunch of keys which looks heavier than a phone.
You've got classes for those magnets, cheapest ones are usually N35, some of the strongest are N48. So basically if you put several N35 (like i'll do with my previous order) you'll end with strong ones.

magnet size matters, and if you find a neodymium one in a hard drive it will be tiny like hell, otherwise it would kill it. Also don't forget that here we have the back panel between the magnets and the steel part and that requires much more force to hold the phone from this 'far'

---------- Post added at 04:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:47 PM ----------
these little parts are cut from a 1mm wide steel disk so they fit in the little holes in the back without adding bulk to the phone. As the holder part I used two 20x5mm round N35 magnets next to each other, one facing upside-down so they create a stronger loop. On them I put some rubber coating for traction (cut from party balloons).

Thanks. Any idea which one I should look at getting? Haven't seen a good enough shot of the micro USB port to make sure I get one facing the right direction. I've got Amazon Prime so I'll probably get one from there to test.

Mine works as well, I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQ2GUFI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
BUT it only works if i have the receiver stuck on the back of the phone in between it and the phone case. If I have it on top of the battery the signal doesn't make it through.. perhaps because of the curved nature of the phone and the NFC receiver on the inside of the back cover.
I was always under the impression that NFC and wireless charging interfered with each other unless it was one integrated unit. That's probably why yours only works that way.
Well I got mine and tried it out, and while it does work, kind of, I'm sending them back. The cable ribbon is so thin it feels like it is going to rip, it would also need you to bend it at a bad angle to get it inside a case or inside the back. I can't get a GOOD charging connection with my TYLT VU chargers, so it is going back.

The cable ribbon is probably thin because you need to bend it at weird/sharp angles and it has to fit in the cracks of the back or case. As long as you're not constantly pulling on it, there's really no risk of tearing. Connections are fine with my $20 chargers, I can drop it on pretty much anywhere in the vicinity of the receiver and it'll charge.
Charge rate depends on which receiver you go with. Most, including the ones posted here, are 500mA which is kind of slow. I should be getting an 800mA one soon so hopefully that'll pick up the pace. IMO, these are still better than switching to PMA.
Its not so much the thin that bothers me, it is how flimsy it is. I mean it could have some reinforcement of some kind you'd think. And it leaves the pad really low on the phone, probably part of the reason it doesn't connect well even with a QI pad a good as the TYLT VU. Just removing the thing to root my device was scary, I thought the USB plug was going to tear off and stay in.
I just bought 2 battery covers with integrated Qi/NFC for $23 each on ebay (my wife got a G3 also) so that should fix the issues for me. Not sure what the VU charges at, but with my Nexus 5 it was always great, for a heavy user like me, I was satisfied (Qi dock in my car too).
What kind of qi car dock do you have? I love the wireless charging and have seen a few posts you put on XDA. I ordered that back plate from eBay, hopefully it works OK and I had ordered the sticker from China but it seems like a pain in the ass ripping off the old one.

Let me find a link for you. Been really happy with it. Glad my posts are helping folks!

Do you have a link to the ones you bought? Also could you post some pictures when you receive and install them?

Moto360 additional charger

Hi all,
Just got my 360 yesterday, and have updated to the latest FW, battery life does seem pretty decent so far, but was wondering if anyone managed to source an additional cradle from anywhere? Would love to leave one at home and put one in the office on those occasions that I may need a top up charge for a long evening.
I know other qi chargers are generally compatible, but the cradles do seem nice, if anyone has a suggestion for an alternate charger, please, chime in! thanks!
Here's a cradle "style" charger that looks similar to the one that comes from Moto

Do you know if this charger will accommodate a metal band? I picked up the Pebble band, so it doesn't separate.

I haven't personally tried this charger, I was just posting it as an example of on that's 'similar' to the one that comes from Motorola. But to answer you're question, it does look like a charger like this might interfere with a watch that doesn't have a band that will completely open. If you do a search on Amazon though, you will find there are dozens are Qi style wireless chargers, perhaps there is one there that can accommodate a watch with a bracelet.
I have this charger and a metal band. They don't really work well together. You will have to place the band below the cable, and somehow place the charger on an angle so there is space for the band to sit under the cable. I don't use that charger everyday so I just make do with it. I have yet to find a alternative charger to work well with the metal band.
Not to hijack, but it seems like the thread is going in this direction anyway... Is anyone aware of a charger that does work well with a metal band (besides the one that comes with the watch)? I travel a lot, and would really like to have a Qi wireless charging pad that worked with the metal band (which doesn't separate). Obviously the two are mutually exclusive at this point, so I'm looking for something fairly low profile that works with the metal band.

If you get a small enough Qi charger that can go through the metal band such that the Qi part on the back of the watch can sit almost flat on it - that should work...
I tried the wife's 360 on our Energizer Qi pad at home (it wasn't a metal band but for the purposes of the test I did, it didn't matter).. and it was still charging even when I put
a few millimeters of paper between the two charging surfaces. Something small like this should work..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/UPGRADED-Wireless-Charging-Blackberry-Qi-Enabled/dp/B00C40OG22/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1412772510&sr=8-4&keywords=qi+wireless+charger
Or this..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/QiStone-Wireless-Compatible-Including-Receivers/dp/B00KOOE5ZS/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1412772562&sr=8-16&keywords=qi+power+bank
So with the above in mind, having the two surfaces in contact with each other (which might not be possible with a closed metal band and a small charging pad anyway), may not be a necessity..
i have a few Amazon PowerBot Qi charging Pucks at home and the office, i dont see why those wouldnt work for people with bands that dont open...
the puck is small enough that i would think will slide inside the band and make proper charging contact

Just what I was saying
Dang it Moto... Do you see how many customer's you're losing by not offering the OEM charger for sale separately? Just release it already!

Someone used a puck and made a dyi stand and what that does is that the watch can suspend on the charger.
I will try my version tomorrow using a Nokia qi pad lol.

Well if you have a Nokia qi pad you can prop it up and charge a bracelet band.
For the pucks you'll probably need to get a bit creative.

It looks like Best Buy is listing the OEM charger on their website now. However, it's not available for shipping and no stores in my area carry them. Maybe they're prepping to start stocking them?

PowerBot QI Puck holder
I have a PowerBot on order and I have designed a holder for the puck and the 360, centered to the puck. Can't make one until I can get actual dimensions off of the PowerBot. I'll 3D print one and let you know how it goes if anyone is interested. Should look like this:

[Q] Possible to convert black to the nice new steel version?

hello, i was just looking into the smartwatch 3 and i think the steel one looks great. the black one however, is right now almost half the price (net quite but not too far off) and i was thinking, could i get the black one then at a later date but the nice steel strap and holder for it?
i mean as much as i like how it looks in steel i dont think its worth all that much extra but im hesitant to get the black rubbery strap as in the past my skin hasnt always loved that kind of watch straps.
(also sorry if ive put this in the wrong place, wasnt sure if here or accessories)
Yeah the bands are interchangeable, not that Sony has bothered to make strap available to buy yet...........................
ah thats what i hoped. one now ordered. yey, thanks and fingers crossed sony decide to make it available at a sensible price for a strap.
same here waiting for accessories especially for the black steel band
Sony announced the availability of the new straps in spring !
http://www.androidcentral.com/sony-smartwatch-3-stainless-steel-strap-launching-worldwide-week
well thats good news, yey. not like my watch has actually shown up. curse you amazon.
I'm a bit miffed that I had to buy the Smartwatch 3 twice. (I got the black rubber on launch thinking I could just buy the metal strap.) Just like the Smartwatch 2 it looks like you will never be able to. My metal Smartwatch 3 arrived this morning but its been a costly exercise being an early adopter. It works out ill have lost £80 once I've sold the black rubber one. Id have kept them both and used the black for running and the metal for best but you cant pair both at once which is a real shame.
Waiting for the official lime sports strap!
It still works out way cheaper than buying a Tag I suppose lol!!

How adjustable is the band? What's the smallest adjustment that can be made?

Well the watch was already the perfect fit for my large wrists. You can take 8 links out so it can even go on a youngsters wrist.

Does the watch come with a tool to adjust the band and/or instructions on how to adjust it?
I haven't looked for one or even looked at the instructions as it was a perfect fit. I'll check the box in the morning and post on here my findings.
Hi. Just checked the box. You get 2 extra links and a USB charger cable. No tools for changing the links I'm afraid.

I find it pretty robust, and if it breaks warranty or insurance. Also I think the convenience of being able to charge wit a conventional cable outweighs any potential port breakage issues
just ordered these for using with it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261585900510
why they didnt give you an angled micro usb connector i have no idea.

I have no problem with the USB port albeit it's in an awkward spot, but it is the rubber dust cover that I think will not last too long, but time will tell
