4G LTE & signal bars disappear about 30 seconds after powering on. What's wrong? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought a Verizon Note 4 (Verizon sim from previous owner installed) and a Gear S from a person off craigslist for $400 total. I have not activated Verizon service yet, only using on WiFi for right now. The phone has been updated to the latest BOG5 firmware from Verizon, so looks like no root for me as well ... Anyways...
...Is it normal for the phone to show 4G and a signal for about 30 seconds after powering on, then have no signal or LTE? Again, I have not activated the phone on Verizon yet, so keep that in mind.
I have checked the APN, and it seems I can't change or edit the Verizon APN. It is greyed out. It also seems it's incorrect. I'm wondering if this is why I get no signal at all.
Anybody have any ideas? I tried putting my metro PCS sim in it as well, and same result, no signal or LTE icon. Even added the correct APN for metro PCS and still nothing.
I also have a Verizon Samsung S6 Edge Plus that is not activated yet either, with a Verizon sim installed and it shows 4G and signal. Also, I can put my metro PCS in the Edge Plus and it works perfectly, without changing or doing anything.
Anyone have any idea as to why the Note 4 isn't working?

Should I expect LTE or 4G symbol beside the signal bars?

I enjoy my new Nexus 7 LTE very much. But one thing bothers me. I have a LTE sim card in the tablet but I always see 4G symbol beside the signal bars instead of LTE. Actually I never seen LTE symbol since day one I put in the sim. Even at the same time my note 3 can have full bars of LTE signal, the tablet only shows 4G. The note 3 tested 100Mbps down on the speedtest.net but the Nexus 7 only has 50Mbps down when the 4G symbol is on. My carrier is Rogers in Canada. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or something is wrong with my tablet?
Mine always shows 4G only. If I use any other widget (like Zooper widget) that determines and shows connection type, it says LTE.
what's the top speed of your N7 on cell network?

Yes and no for me on AT&T.
I activated a SIM on AT&T on the Nexus 7 2013 4G/LTE and it shows LTE in US.
But, I used the AT&T SIM I activated on Nexus 7 2012 3G on my Nexus 7 2013 and it never shows LTE, only H (HSPA). The transfer speeds on LTE are greater than HSPA on the same Nexus 7 2013 4G/LTE..
Given the Nexus 7 2013 responds different on the same AT&T network at the same physical location just using 2 differently activated SIM gives me a clue there must be some difference in the network settings. I have not yet looked into the details exactly what happens different on the two AT&T SIM but this might help you.
I suspect the network configuration must be changed for LTE access, and it may have nothing to do with the Nexus 7 2013 4G/LTE hardware. It is possible there is some AT&T throttling based on activation but I have no idea how they could do this on a per-device basis (outside my network configuration).

You have to call AT&T to "register" your imei number corresponding to the sim card you are using. Once you do that you will gain lte access. Mine was hspa until I called them.

Just done a test and found something very interesting, just like to report back.
I picked a spot where has very good LTE signal.
First I tested the speed on my Note3 and N7 with its own SIMs. My note3 showed LTE symbol and speed around 80Mbps. The N7 shows 4G symbol and speed around 70Mbps which is in the ballpark with Note3.
Then I switched the SIMs. The note3 still showed LTE symbol with N7 SIM in it. N7 showed 4G with the Note3 SIM in it. The speed test was about same as the first test.
My conclusion is that there is something in N7 doesn't like the Rogers network so the tablet always shows 4G even it is actually connected on LTE network and functioning on LTE speed.

I found it is possible to swap SIM on the same network provider without the tablet noticing, and the results might not change because the SIM settings are unchanged. There should be a tablet reboot involved when swapping SIM, so the new SIM settings are actually applied. I suspect you might have done a valid test, or it may be possible the settings did not update between SIM changes.
What I do is swap out one SIM, insert a SIM from another provider and boot up to configure settings for a second provider or at least clear out the first provider (the SIM does not have to be active), and insert the second SIM from same provider as first and boot up. This has worked very well. It might be enough to simply reboot the device but I don't know if the SIM setting are read and configured every time the tablet boots.
Good luck.

Yes, that's what I did. I power down the devices to switch SIM and power up to test. I've done the testing twice to be certain. If you insert SIM to N7 on the fly, the device will ask you to power off and on to make the SIM work.

ATT note 2 as go phone

I have a att note 2 with a go phone sim card in it. I get hsdpa+ but can not get lte. When the sim card was bought it was used in a vzw note 2 would that effect it cause the vzw note 2 imei number was used to activate the sim. All the ready I have done someone said somewhere that the sim is probably not provisioned for lte. Well the point im getting at is I need help in trying to get lte and I know where im at there is lte cause my Co workers are currently on lte.

H+ is LTE. Check the phone status >> mobile network type and you will see you are connected to fastest available network.

If you are on a go-phone plan I would be very careful using mobile data. My wife doesn't use her phone much so she has a go-phone plan. I experimented with it some and a couple of apps got updated via mobile and it ate her $$ up in a hurry -- something to the tune of $17 in just a couple of minutes.
Then again there are a couple of different go-phone plans so this might not be the case for yours.

Sorry but h+ is not lte. And according to documents on att.com and other varies websites you can connect to lte with this phone on go phone plans
It is LTE if the rom doesn't have an LTE icon.
And how do you know you are in an LTE area? I'm in a large California city, and I almost never see the LTE icon.
HSPA+ is considered "4G" by ATT, but it is not 4G LTE.
AT&T 4g icon... yaya
At&t stock roms will show 4g icon in the status bar for both HSPA+ and LTE. This is where the confusion starts yay AT&T.
To check to see if you are on LTE I would go to settings / about phone / Status and check the mobile network type. I think this will give you a better indication of the network you are on.
An information app similar to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gdip.android.network may also help.
If you are still not getting LTE with your at&t go phone I would start by checking your apn settings.
I have used a few of at&t mvno's I have had straight talk, at&t-go, and currently prefer(and use) AIO wireless (now re-branded to Cricket). All of at&t mvno's don't even require you to unlock your carrier you can use any at&t phone on their networks.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
I've checked apn settings they are what it should be and in the settings menu it reads hspa+. And where I live and work both have lte. Gettysburg pa is where I live and I work in baltimore,md and people I know all have lte. I called customer service and they could see I was in a lte area and only receiving hspa+. They have a trouble ticket in. I know the icon in the notification bar always shows 4g thats why Ilike to always go off setting/about. Thank you for your help

you need a new sim, you can get LTE with at&t prepaid but if you have an older sim,it wont work. i had a note 1 on postpaid and was only getting h+ until i went to the at&t store and got a newer sim.
some people will try to say there is no lte on at&t prepaid, there is.

My ATT Note 2 has a 4G icon and a 4G LTE icon...

I agree with getting a new sim. Go to a corporate/retail store not a dealer/franchise store, as the corporate will give you a new reprovisioned sim and the dealer will say it won't matter, or charge you.
I just saw the LTE icon for the first time, but I am far away from my home now.

Tmobile S6 edge on AT&t users......

I currently am using my unlocked tmobile S6 edge on AT&T and was curious I am not getting an lte signal icon on my phone just showing 4G. Could someone confirm they are getting an lte symbol icon to show or will the symbol just show 4G on my tmobile even if it's on att lte? If someone is getting a lte icon to show could you tell me your apn settings that you are using? Thanks!
If you havent had lte before on at&t, you might need to get your account updated to use lte. Call at&t and try to have them provision your account for lte. The first rep i talked to said they cant provision for lte because i dont have an at&t phone so you might need to try another rep. I'm using the default setting for nxtgenfone and see the lte icon.

As above, you need to call. However, I was lead 20 different ways before getting it fixed. Basically, the IMEI forthe Tmo version is identified as a phone with no LTE in their system. So, you don't get LTE signal when using the nextgenphone APN. You actually won't get any data. However, if you switch it to the phone APN, you will get 4G. You can verify this by moving your sim into another LTE capable phone and it does the same.
When I spoke to the rep, she said she wasn't able to enable the LTE plan based on the IMEI. I had to give her the IMEI of my Nexus 6, which allowed them to select the proper plan. Once that was done, I put the SIM back in the Edge, selected the nextgenphone APN, and now I have LTE.

Sold my phone to a relative, now no 4G

I picked up the new Google Pixel XL and sold my OnePlus 3 to my uncle. He went to AT&T and went through 3 sim cards with no 4G.
I put my sim back in the OP3 and I get service but no 4g, so it'll make calls but can't send/receive pictures. I checked that the network is on 4g and the APN is on nextgenphone.
Any ideas?
Sounds like your APN is wrong. I am on AT&T and I get 4G LTE speeds without issue. The APN name you listed sounds wrong. Mine is just ATT Phone and again works without issue.
Compare against the settings here:
https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KB424489
I had him add the ATT phone APN and still no 4G. Ive always used NXTGENPHONE and gotten 4G

trouble finding 4G LTE after temp move to E (Edge)

Noticing something unusual now with my S8+ locking onto 4G LTE.
If I am in a 4G LTE area (40-50 down speeds on avg), then move to a poor coverage area (Edge only), then move back to the same 4G LTE area...my phone does not switch back to 4G LTE.
I have to restart my phone in order to connect to 4G LTE.
Turning off then turning on data doesn't work either...although shouldn't have to do this anyway.
Any suggestions? BTW, haven't touched the default phone settings and I have cellular network preferred in the wifi call setting if that matters. Network mode is LTE/4G/3G/2G. My phone is not rooted.
Thanks.
I've experienced this same issue I've actually had my s8+ replaced under warranty 5 times now... t-mobile is now having me contact samsung to send in my phone because they believe its a phone issue...
wow, really...
that stinks...and you know, only started after one of the recent updates, whatever was before the Bixby update... maybe coincident, maybe not.
Same issues here. I've had while running the T-Mo firmware and the unlocked firmware. Mine was originally the US Unlocked version purchased straight from Samsung.com.
I have that same problem too... Just put it in airplane mode for a few seconds to fix it.

That doesn't work for me. It's hit or miss. Sometimes it bounces back to LTE just fine, other times not. Yesterday, it got stuck on H+. Only a reboot would fix it.
well what the heck - guess i will visit the TMo store to see what they say...
