just flash lollipop and everything will be fine.
Just follow the steps here
IN SP TOOLS DO NOT SELECT "DOWNLOAD ONLY" OR "FORMAT"
ONLY SELECT FIRMWARE UPGRADE.

Bro, you look like you're in deep ****!
Don't worry, we'll fix this.
If you read my previous post in this thread, i said not to use download only.
USE UPGRADE FIRMWARE.
don't go to format tab or anything. do not edit anything.
JUST GIVE THE SCATTER FILE, SELECT FIRMWARE UPGRADE AND HIT DOWNLOAD. DON'T CHANGE ANY SETTING
do that and if still not working try kitkat flash file here
try it and revert back

OK so I understood you'r problem, and luckily I have a solution.
I believe the PMT block is created by SP Flash Tool dynamically from scatter file. It's comparing the scatter file with what is sitting at the PMT address on the flash. If these two mismatch, you get the error you mentioned. If you want to force a new PMT that matches your scatter file's layout, you have to do a "Format" in SP Flash Tool. This will get you back to a PMT on flash that matches your scatter file, then SP Flash Tool will be happy and allow you to use Download (write to flash).
What is a PMT? A partition table that holds the addresses to all the other partitions.
Stepwise, What you have to do:
STEP 1 :
In SP tools, on the top you have tabs like welcome, format, download, readback and memoryTest.
Step 2 :
In download tab select scatter file. ONLY SELECT. Then go to Format tab.
(Use only stock kitkat scatter file or lollipop doesn't matter. Only, it should be stock.)
Step 3 :
Here check the validation check box, and select auto format flash. Now click on START.
Step 4 :
Once completed, go to download tab and select Upgrade Firmware and hit download.
This should probably get your phone up and running.
Revert back if not.

Guys, I am almost having the same problem. My Canvas A1 worked fine for 11 months and now it is malfunctioning. The phone stops giving audio output sometimes and then I have to restart it to make it work. It even started to restart on its own. Last day, I tried to wipe the dalvik cache and did a factory reset and now my phone is stuck on the "Google animation". I have less time left for my warranty, so please reply fast. Do I need to flash stock 6.0 via stock recovery ?? I don't want to unlock bootloader or to root the device for as long as possible. Thanks for reading, waiting for your reply. :crying:

[Guide][Marshmallow] Android 6.0 official update for Micromax Canvas A1 (AQ4501)

Update: SPFlashTool flashable Marshmallow firmware file is now available. Build MOB30N.
OTA links are already there on xda, but here was no specific thread for Canvas A1 so i am writing one
Google has released the OTA files for Canvas A1 and other android one devices.
NOTE: To update your phone using OTA files your phone should be running Stock lollipop or atleast stock recovery. (Not applicable if using sp flash tool)
If you are running a custom rom or custom recovery then before proceeding to this guide you must revert back to stock lollipop using sp flash tool
Pre-requisites: 1.Your phone should be atleast 60% charged
2. Back up all important data (just to be safe)
Canvas A1 users can easily update their device by following method(s)
Method 1 (the usual method):
Step 1: Download the official Marshmallow OTA file from here https://android.googleapis.com/packages/ota/google_aq4501sprout_aq4501/dc78fbefaf5f69cc4754751251d9ece094bc96e6.signed-sprout-mmx-MRA58M-from-LMY48M.zip
Step 2: Connect your smartphone to computer using the original USB cable.
Step 3: Copy and paste the OTA zip files to phone's storage and make a note of its location.
Step 4: Boot your smartphone into recovery mode or stock recovery: Disconnect the phone from computer, and then turn it off.
Press and hold both the Volume and the Power buttons until the display turns on and enters bootloader mode.
Hit the volume button to open the Recovery menu and then press the power button to select it. Your phone should now boot into recovery mode.
At this moment, a dead Android with an exclamation mark should appear on the screen. Now press and hold Power button for three seconds and then hit the Volume up button once to progress into recovery mode.
Step 5: Return to the main recovery screen and choose 'install update from sdcard'.
Step 6: Then select the OTA zip file using the volume buttons for navigation and the Power button to select any file or open a folder. After you select the zip file, confirm its installation and the update should start installing on your device.
Step 7: Once the installation is done, return to main screen of recovery. Choose Reboot system now to restart the phone and boot into the newly installed Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update from Google.
Voila!! You are running official Android 6.0 :laugh:
Method 2 (using sp flash tool, best method)
This method can be used even if you are running a custom rom. You can also use this method to unbrick Micromax Canvas A1.
Pre-requisites: Windows computer, USB cable, and most important "patience".
Step 1:
a) Download micromax driver.{thanks to @mohsin.r.munshi}
Extract its content, you will find an .exe file inside a folder "driver9401". Disable your antivirus and run the .exe file as administrator. (If you are using 64-bit windows, you will need to "disable driver signature enforcement". Google it)
b) Download SP Flash tool from my mediafire or from its official website. Extract it to any folder
c) Download SPflashTool flashable Marshmallow firmware . Extract the zip file. You will see the following files in it (similar not exact)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Note the location of MT6582_Android_scatter.txt file
Step2: Goto the folder where you have extracted sp flash tool. Run flash_tool.exe
Step 3: In sp flash tool, Click on "scatter loading". Then locate and select "MT6582_Android_scatter.txt". SP Flash tool will load all firmware files from the folder where you have extracted the OTA files.
Step 4: Power off your phone. And REMOVE the battery. Now on SP flash tool, click on "Download".
(refer to screenshots given on this website. Ignore the steps given on this website, just refer screenshots)
Step 5: (pay attention to every word) Connect USB cable to your phone only. Then Press and HOLD volume down button and insert the other end of USB cable to your pc. Flashing will start automatically. Wait till you see "OK" message on your pc.
Step 6: Once you see "OK" message, disconnect your phone and reinsert your phone's battery. Turn ON your phone. The first boot will take longer than usual.
Congo! You just updated/unbricked your Micromax Canvas A1.
Feel free to post comments for any doubts and errors

flash official lollipop rom using method 2 above
Hi.. I'm on CM13 now. But I don't have mobile data for some reason. So I want to flash stock ROM. But last time I tried flashing stock, it wiped my IMEI numbers. Luckily my warranty status was somehow reset. So I had to get the phone replaced. Does this have a chance to cause the same problem (wipe my IMEI numbers)??

In that case, i would suggest you to take a backup of your imei data using MTK Droid tool. Also copy your nvram folder straight from your phone to as many external storages as you can. Nvram (imei data) somehow becomes unrecognised after downgrading some phones.
Solution:
1. Use MTK droid tool to restore it from a previous backup.
or
2. locate nvram folder ( /data/nvram, correct me if i m wrong) DELETE it. Then paste a copy of your nvram folder that you copied when imei was not lost. DONT chmod. You will most probably get your network working (ensure that sim card was PRSENT and Radios were ON during this copy paste) within few seconds. I did this to restore imei on galaxy s4.
well, i have flashed 9 different mediatek phones using spflashtool, didnt lose imei in any.

Firmwares are device specific. You CANNOT install a this on any other phone. You will brick your phone by installing a ROM which is not made for your device
Please update stock marshmallow link sir as soon as possible
.......
Thanks in advance

My micromax android one got stuck at marshmallow logo. I tried to flash lollipop using SP flash as mention above in method 2. I connect my phone . My phone is successfully detected by my PC. But SP flash show no progress. why??? I follow all steps very carefully. Or is it not possible to install lollipop if your phone already has marshmallow?

That means your phone was not detected. Power off your phone. Load scatter file and then click on download button on so flashtool. Put one end of USB cable to your phone. Hold volume down and simultaneously put other end of USB cable to computer. If its connected, the progress bar at bottom will show progress. I am assuming you have installed all drivers.
I hope this helps.

Lenovo K8 Note Red State Bootloop After Flashing Custom Recovery

Hello Guys,
The issue is that i wanted to root my lenovo k8 note so follow this link "https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/tutorials-how-to-root-lenovo-k8-note-t3685502", Everything works file but in last rooting step no. 9
9. If you see internal storage 0mb Then GoTo Wipe and FORMAT DATA once & reboot to recovery
but in my device there has memory 59999mb so i ignored and reboot using twrp but it says no OS installed
and shows orange state, then i format phone using twrp but nothing happens again orange state and no os installed.
then i found another article with same issue "https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/lenovo-k8-note-stuck-boot-logo-flashing-t3751324/post75974342#post75974342" and found this
The bootlogo issue.
Hey! I read your post regarding your k8 note being stuck at the bootlogo.
Consider that you can still use TWRP, boot into it.
Then go ahead and download the SuperSU zip on your PC/laptop and connect your phone with a USB. You might be able to see the SD card folders on your PC, then you can just copy and paste it to the internal sd and flash it. You'll be good to go. If that doesn't work, in the TWRP Mode, go to advanced and select ADB sideload. You can now flash using ADB sideload.
Search for tutorials on ADB sideload. It's easy and that should work.

solution over there and flash supersu but nothing happens.
After so many try i locked oem bootloader in fastboot using command "fastboot oem lock", after this my lenovo k8 note show Red State.
Now i am not able to do anythig please help me out.
Basically my device is stuck at the bootloop with the
Red State
=> "Your Device has fail to pass verification and may not work properly
your device will boot in 10 sec trusted
Your device will boot in 5 seconds"
definitely I must have screwed up something.
Please help me to boot my Lenovo K8 note in normal mode.
Thanks

Now i am not able to do anythig please help me out.
Basically my device is stuck at the bootloop with the
Red State
=> "Your Device has fail to pass verification and may not work properly
your device will boot in 10 sec trusted
Your device will boot in 5 seconds"
definitely I must have screwed up something.
Please help me to boot my Lenovo K8 note in normal mode.

Are you okay with losing your data on your phone? If yes then go ahead and flash stock ROM with sp flash tool. And about your problem, I guess you wiped the /system partition as well that's why it was showing no os installed.
Another thing is that if you install twrp Do not boot up your phone, boot up into twrp by pressing volume up and power button at the same time you'll need to flash magisk or supersu so that twrp can modify partition correctly.
Thanks

What problem do you have, please describe
I have lost all my mind and need serious help.
Recently, the march update came. i forgot that rooted phone should not be updated by the OTA update. And i did. As a result i got stuck in a bootloop. Then I had to use the oreo ROM from this forum and flashed it using SP Flash tool. It was a successfull flash. Then I used Maui META to write the IMEI for both sim. That was successfull too(Wifi and bluetooth addresses were working by themselves and i didnt write the serial number of the phone).
After working nicely for three days, i was using Whatsapp and a friend of mine sent me a .pptx file (powerpoint presentation). I opened it using WPS office app. I opened it multiple times in morning with no problems. But in the afternoon at about 2.53 PM while i was in my car, i was unable to open the file. The phone hanged. It heated up. To get out of the hang, i restarted the phone using the power button. IT DID NOT START. All it showed was the lenovo logo screen. And after doing more restarts, the phone went completely blank.
Now i cannot start it, or charge it. So i thought of flashing it again. But when i connect it to my PC, it keeps CONNECTING and DISCONNECTING. what i saw in the device manager was that the driver keeps changing very fast betwee MTK USB PORT and PRELOADER.
I found the solution to be updating the drivers manually. I did. Now the driver shows only DA USB VCOM and when it changes, it goes invisible in the PC and then appears back. Now when i start flashing, the first red progress bar appears as: Download DA 100%. and the flash hangs. After some time, this error will popup: ERROR: STATUS_UNKNOWN_STORAGE_TYPE (0xC0040009)
Please someone help me.

I couldn't find more about the problem online, can you please upload a screenshot of the error. Try using the latest version of SP Flash Tool and see if the problem persists
I have lost all my mind and need serious help.
here are the screenshots. Note that the battery is in the phone always because i am unable to open the back cover. During the flashing process, i did not press the vol - button.
https://ibb.co/sq8knnj
https://ibb.co/VjqKQm3
https://ibb.co/4VkVPjs
https://ibb.co/cw2BzLC
https://ibb.co/kcjjJ74
Now in the following screenshots, i kept the vol - button pressed down. Note that the driver is stuck at preloader and not DA. Also the first bar is yellow color in both these cases. However, in the above situation, multiple files were flashed. But in this below situation, only this so called "flash" was done; that too unsucessful in the end.

The problem may be with your drivers, i see you have Preloader drivers only.
Follow this guide for installing drivers - https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-m2/help/windows-10-mtk-vcom-usb-drivers-32-64-t3267033

So i did as you said brother. I don' t know how but something happened. The phone, after a long time actually displayed up. It showed the LENOVO logo and down in the corner two things came in written :
>device unlocked
>Tool DL image Fail
I googled it up and found that it requires to flash the phone with the DA DL option ticked. I did that but it does not flash. The error is same as follows:
https://ibb.co/Ssj58Zd
Can you please guide me in the flashing process? I think the mistake is very small but i don't know where i am missing.

Okay so what i figured out is that in this state: (battery plugged in, no notification LED response, no response on power or volume buttons) the driver you require is MTK USB PORT.
I updated to this driver manually, and guess what? the phone actually flashed. But three files remained and the process hanged. (system, cache and userdata)
Now i get the errors:
>device unlocked
>Tool DL image Fail
and sometimes: >device otp failed
I am trying to flash the rest three files individually. Lets see what happens.

This group is possibly dead. No one has responded till today...

Did I hardbrick my RN8P..?

Hi, everyone. A very desperate owner over here...So, I am having no response from my Redmi Note 8 Pro. I unlocked bootloader, flashed the "lk" and "preloader" files to prevent hard brick. Then I flashed recovery.img from LR Team. I formatted the data and flashed the latest version of MIUI 11 for Europe (miui_BEGONIAEEAGlobal_V11.0.2.0.QGGEUXM_a13b9653ba_10.0). Everything went without problems. I went back (didn't restart) to recovery, and I chose the "install root" option and flashed Magisk. After that, I restarted the phone. But then the problems started with the phone bootlooping. So, I thought, I'm gonna do all these steps without the "Install root" to see if anything changes. So I flashed "lk" and "preloader" (just to be sure), and I flashed the recovery. After that phone doesn't even bootloop. It just vibrates vey shortly if I hold volume+ and power. No panic just yet, I go to SP Flash Tool, load the firmware scatter file and I press "download". But the tool gives me an error "status-brom_cmd_send_da_fail (0xC0060003)". I have tried different usb ports, changed the usb cable, different button combinations, changed between MTK_AllInOne_DA. bin and DA_PL.bin but without success. So I'm asking you all is there some step that I am missing? Because I have been all over XDA these last couple of days and no solution is working for me.
*******************Update 03/13/20********************
So I have managed to unbrick my RN8P. It was dead, without fastboot or any other way to connect. Except for SP Flash Tool. But I had no success to connect my phone in a way that would allow to flash the stock firmware. The SPF Tool kept giving me the "status-brom_cmd_send_da_fail (0xC0060003)" error. So, with my final effort I tried the steps that are explained in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/help/redmi-note-8-pro-bricked-t3976289/page4 (the last post on the page) . First I downloaded Miflash Pro from here https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=4349826312261688231 . It's in Italian, but don't worry, you just need to use a few functions within the program.
1. Once you have installed Miflash, open it.
2. Switch over to the 'Flash MTK' tab.
2. Load your firmware (I used this page to download mine https://c.mi.com/oc/miuidownload/detail?device=1900375 - European Version)
3. Choose Download Agent ( for example C:\Program Files (x86)\MiFlashPro\SP_Flash_Tool\MTK_AllInOne_DA_mt6785_mt6765.bin, your path coud be different)
4. Load scatter file (my example - C:\Users\your_username\Downloads\begoniav11030eea\images, it should be in the 'images' folder)
5. Click on 'Download'.
6. Connect your bricked phone
7. Now this step might work for you without pressing any buttons, as that was the case with me. But you could try pressing Volume - or Voulume + while connecting with the computer.
That's it. The flashing took about 5 minutes, but my phone was resurrected. BEAR IN MIND that before this hard brick happened, I did flash the files that were leaked a few weeks ago that permitted the use of SP Flash Tool without an authorised Mi account- the 'preloader' and 'lk' file. But I did flash an android 10 based firmware on top of it. As suggested by some senior members on this thread, by flashing an Android 10 ROM, I overwrote the 'preloader' and 'lk' files, therefore losing the option to flash with SP Flash Tool without an authorised account. But, the bottom line is, this method worked for me. So maybe it might work for you. And if you have a hard bricked Redmi Note 8 Pro, that doesn't have a previously flashed 'preloader' and 'lk' files, please, do try this method. If it works, then great, we just might have resolved some issues with hard bricking of this device.

From what I understood, you have to be on android 9 when flashing preloader. After that one can flash other ROM versions. Or am I wrong?

Nope, if you flash a rom that contain those partitions it will be over writed.
Read carefully the instructions, the dev remark this point clearly in the mega post
In the past, I would edit the updater script to remove whichever partition updates I didn't want, such as boot.
Does that work with MIUI 11? I guess I could try it out, only flash the system partition and see what happens. Anyone else try?
OP, did you flash both preloader, lk and lk2 before rebooting?
Try this:
I was in a similar situation. I unbricked my phone by downloading the SP flash tools with the DA file specifically for the MT6785 (The note 8 pro's chip). here's the link to download it: https[colon]//easyfirmwares[dot]com/index.php?a=downloads&b=file&id=603
Just extract and follow the directions to unbrick your device on the megathread. Hopefully this helps.
* Also, this won't work if you don't have the preloader and lk images flashed, as said in the megthread. *
edit: Replace [colon] with " : " and [dot] with " . "
I pulled my phone back from the dead. I read in a thread somewhere that this guy had the same situation as me. He downloaded miflash pro (black icon). So I did the same. There is a tab inside miflash for sp flash tool. When I connected my phone it immediately started flashing. The phone rebooted with the firmware I chose ( which is 11.0.3.0 PGGEUXM). Since this thread is from last year (when I have more time I'll post the link here), I think that it MIGHT work for bricked RN8P's that don't have the preloader/lk files flashed. But it's just a thought. Anyway, like I said, my phone was dead, wasn't reacting to anything, I had no fastboot and SP Flash Tool that I had downloaded from the official website kept giving me errors each time I connected with USB. It could be that particular versions of SP Flash had some misunderstandings with my PCs (tried two PCs and three versions of the SP tool). I was so desperate and I had already ordered a Redmi Note 8T from Amazon. But then I read this post and it worked! :silly: :laugh:
i need an auth. mi account to flash my firmware back. can anyone help me please?

Where do I find the scatter file? Is it in a subfolder of the firmware I downloaded ? I have a scatter file but each and everytime I get Error: Status_scatter_file_invalid (bC0030001). I have googled all over, change the path of my firmware to a real simple path (c:\firmware). I have the same problem with stand-alone sp flash tools. - For that I tried 5 different versions. Any advice appreciated

The scatter file is inside the firmware. You need to extract the tar.gz image, then it should be in the 'images' folder.
Thanks, I managed to get abit further, but not much.
My phone is bricked I think. Can't go into recovery nor fastboot. powering it on, I just get the standard 'Redmi, by Xiaomi' splashscreen for about 3 seconds, in the bottom left, I get a small line 'se blown:sucess'. I think it should read efuse or qfuse but because of rounded corners, cant see full message. After 3 seconds it reboots, goes blank for 5 seconds and then back to Redmi Screen..
I have noticed, having it plugged into PC, when it reboots (i.e. goes blank) the meditek vcom driver pops up in Device Manager and I get the Windows sound of a device being connected. Then it disappears after a second or two
So I can now successfully load my firmware and scatter file. and if I hit the Download button in SPFT just as the its rebooting, detects the phone and the port comes up in bottom left of SPFT. But after 2 minutes it just times out with an error. Its like it detects it for a second and thats it.
Any ideas?

Looks like it's not hardbricked anymore, that's great. You should check out other threads on the RN8 Pro about what to do next.
It works flawlessly AND i had preventive loader (Android 9, Global 11.0.6)
However, note following points;
1. if you get your battery drained it wont charge in preloader mode. so you have to flash the original preloader/lk files as well else, you can uncheck preloader, lk1 and lk2.
2. For future, DONT EVER LET YOUR PHONE BATTERY EVER DRAIN TO ZERO, else possibly you might have to flash whole rom again. (you can try simply restoring preloader)
hi i have a redmi note 8 pro bricked, wrong twrp install, i tried this but it says i don't have any authorized account, what can i do?
dont work!for me

Unbrick Nokia 6.1?

Bootloader is unlocked.
I was running nokia-tool.exe to restore it to stock. nokia-tool.exe crashed in the middle.
Now the screen never comes on (e.g. no Android One logo). However, oddly, the phone is working. For example, I can boot it and I hear the usual chime as it boots and when it's booted. I get the Nokia 6.1 appearing as an attached device. Also, I can get it into fastboot (even though the screen appears dead) and I can see the device in fastboot devices.
I have tried flashing boot.img, system.ing, vendor.img and then wiping userdata with fastboot -w option.
But the screen remains stubbonly dead. Oh and yes, it was working perfectly before nokia-tool.exe, so it's not a hardware issue.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Did you try using the OSA Tool?
It worked for me quite successfully when my Nokia 6.1 device failed to boot and I was looking for ways to restore the STOCK ROM and the recovery.
However, I unlocked my Nokia 6.1 Bootloader before proceeding with the further steps.
I followed the techmesto guide to successfully unlock my boot loader.
Once boot loader is unlocked, you can use these web-links and I am hopeful that you will get your device functioning well in no-time:
Download the Stock Rom through this web link
Here's how you can use OST Tool to install STOCK ROM
Links to download OST Tool:
Alternate Link = https://androidmtk.com/use-ost-tool
Download OST Tool = https://androidmtk.com/ost-tool
Just follow the steps listed in the above guides properly and all will be fine.
Let know if this works out for you.
Cheers,
Manu

Thanks for the reply - I've hit a roadblock: the link to the ROM is only for the img files, not the nb0 files. (The author says "It is already advised that the Nokia Service Tool only supports firmware files in the .nb0 or the .mlf format. You can download them from the below-mentioned links" and then failed to link to them! Any ideas where the stock nb0 files are? I searched this forum and couldn't find them.
EDIT: Think I might have found one Googling...
EDIT2: I found PL2-354E-0-00WW-B01.nb0
When I run the OST tool and click the "Edit Phone Information", I get "Boot FTM Mode Fail!". If I OK that (I read that this error is OK to ignore) and carry on, if just hangs at "Checking device status...".

Don't click on the "Edit phone information" as many guides recommend.
Follow these steps instead:
Download your STOCK ROM and extract it in a new folder
Download OSA Tool (crack version) >> Install it on your system >> Paste the crack files in the default installation folder
Stay connected with your internet >> Run the tool and click on OK >> You will arrive at the first screen of the OSA Tool
Switch off your device >> Use "Power + Volume Down" key combination to boot into the "Fast boot mode."
Click on NEXT >> Locate your extracted STOCK ROM FILE >>> Add it to the tool and from the drop-down, select Emergency mode/ Normal mode depending on your situation.
Note: Emergency mode is useful if your device is dead and nothing works. It will erase your personal data completely.
The other mode i.e., "Normal mode" is useful if your device works fine, and you want to simply flash the STOCK ROM without erasing your personal data.
Once the mode is chosen, click NEXT >> Let the process begin
You will get a success message once the process gets finished
Close the OSA Tool and disconnect your device
In most cases, your device will auto-reboot >> If not, reboot it manually
Once booted up, you shall have your STOCK ROM installed successfully
Note:
I downloaded my STOCK ROM from this link - STOCK ROM for Nokia 6.1 (2018)
I used OSA Tool v6.2.8 Cracked version to bypass login issues. Use Google and you will find the software easily.
Let know if the above steps helped you, and reach out if you still get stuck anywhere.
Cheers,
Manu

OK, so following this to the letter:
Once the mode is chosen, click NEXT >> Let the process begin
At this point it says "The update process failed. Error: emergency download failed. Error = Device_Not_Configure (0x4000).
Oddly, if I type "fastboot devices" it does show me the device, so I know it's connected and visible to the laptop.
Weird!

Time to put it in the bin?

also tried flashing twrp (again) using fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and it just said something like the recovery partition was not found. As I say, the phone boot both normally and into fastboot - just neither without a screen.
I appreciate your time trying to help me, but time to draw a line under it and chuck it in the bin. (There's a phrase here in the UK and maybe other places too: you can't polish a turd !)
