Verizon-Intermittent Data drop - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just received this phone yesterday and dropped the sim from my 2014 X into it and it worked perfectly all day. Today, however, the data has periodically dropped until I reset the phone or toggle cellular network. Are there settings I need to modify to optimize? Any ideas welcome.
Thanks!
Preferred network type - global
Enhanced 4G LTE Mode - on
Data whie Roaming - off
System select - automatic

Sorry to derail your thread a bit... I am setting my sister up on this phone coming from a 2013 moto x. Is VOLTE working for you? If so, did you have it provisioned on your moto x 2014 prior? I just set up HD calling for her on her account but internet + call wasnt working right away. However visual voicemail wont set itself up. I may have to have her put the sim card back into the X and setup visual voicemail on line before putting the sim back into the 5X no? Hard for me to troubleshoot her phone being she isnt near me.

I personally have never used VVM, but there is a check box for "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" that is selected by default that should work as long as it is enabled through VZW on the account. It may require a reboot after turning on if I remember correctly.

Thank you. The issue is that once advanced calling/HD calling is enabled on a verizon eligible phone, regualr voicemail doesnt seem to work? Can you confirm you have Voice over LTE and what is your voicemail solution?

x'm a newbie to NEXUS. The 5X is my first one. But I am 7 year Android user...
You shouldn't need to touch the developer options but it is worth seeing if it makes a difference.
I would experiment with these settings to see if it helps stabilize things.
Settings>Developer Options
Disable "Aggressive Wi-Fi to Cellular hand..."
Disable Always allow "Wi-Fi Roam Scans"
Enable "Cellular data always active"
Those three options, or a combination of them may help. I disabled the last one("Cellular data always active") which is the default. If I need it, I'll select it in the future.
I hope it helps.

Aaah I see, I can't really comment because I have a work account so I can't access the account to enable VoLTE. And I'm using old school "please enter your four digit code" voicemail.

Tmobile S4 on AT&T cannot connect to LTE help!

Hey everyone!
So I picked up a tmobile s4 to use on ATT since I read it was the most unlocked due to bands / bootlocker. I unlocked it via the method described on this site via the debug menu.
Popped in ATT sim, everything looked fine initially.
1. I'm only getting 4G in an LTE area. device hasn't picked up any LTE anywhere yet.
2. When I go under "Network Mode" and select "LTE/GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) the signal dies out and it always reverts back to GSM/WCDMA"
3. I've called ATT a few times and triple checked that I'm on an Android LTE data plan, so that's not an issue. ATT techs suggested it could be a device issue and maybe I should take it into their tech center.
4. Tried to set up ATT Visual Voicemail, that failed also.
So can it be a Sim issue? Maybe something on tmobiles side? Since device was never active on their network. A lemon S4?
I've run out of options
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA!

In the "APNs" window just hit the + button to creat a new APN

I also found the setting from here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMyD8zqk-Hg which led to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336085 .
The main end game fix was that ATT had my IMIE # incorrectly set. Once they fixed that my LTE was a go!

During Call Switches to 1x instead of 4G?

Not sure if I remember this happening on my Verizon G2, but my G4 consistently knocks out 4G when I am on a call? I thought it should be using it.
You need to enable Advanced calling to keep your 4G active when on a phone call.

Hmmm... I don't anything called Advanced Calling. I'm on T-Mobile.
Different carriers work differently. And I think some don't need "Advanced Calling" to do voice and data at the same time.

It's volte for you.
Also, having VOLTE enabled gives you the ability to go from WiFi calling to networking calling seamlessly. If wifi calling is disabled, the call will normally drop. If you have it enabled, and it still drops, you only have WiFi calling 1.0 however you shouldn't have that issue since you're posting in the g4 forum.
For anyone who's wondering: Advanced Calling is a free feature from Verizon. I checked with a phone rep and activated it on two different G4's without problems.
Also, this is supposed to be enabled by default, but it wasn't when I picked up my phone from Best Buy.

Verizon Advanced calling brings:
VOLTE
HD voice at a higher bitrate which is clearer when using the earpiece or built in speaker.
Offline Voicemail downloaded to device
Simultaneous voice and data using one radio instead of SVDO (which the phone doesn't have)
switchable to video chat while on call, either one or both users.
Dropped calls if you move out of a 4G area.
Thanks - just turned it on.

Enable bands

My friends has a g920p and wants to enable some bands so lte from telcel can work now he has only H+. Can that be done. I know that the s3 can with some magic. Thanks

Just put the phone on automatic in mobile network settings and set up two apns one for hspa and another for lte but make sure the lte apn has the bearer option set to lte the other just leave it how it is.
Didnt get it my friend.... here in mexico we use same apn for 3G or 4G LTE. We just need a sim v6.x and will get the lte bands.

I know how to do this, but you would need to have the MSL number, if you don't then Google idoneapps, this guy sells an app that unlocks phone and extract that number.
So i need the msl number so how can i get it. Friends phone is already unlock.
Enviado desde mi SM-G920F mediante Tapatalk
MSL number is needed to edit data settings in sprint hidden menu. Install shortcut lite master and then search for PST, launch that application. Then look for ##Data#menu. You'll see there if your LTE is enabled or not. If it is not the only way to enable it is having MSL number.
Hidden Menu
there is no need for app for shortcut. Go to setting and go to Activate this device. Phone will load some info then look at top right for MORE. Click on it then click on PST. This will take to hidden menu,
To get LTE working all you have to do is create two separate APN's one with your regular APN settings and another that is identical APN settings but on the "Bearer" setting put it on LTE and you're good to go also make sure your phone is set to automatic and not gsm / umts

what you stated here is correct. but have you tried it yourself?
I did, but there issue with send text messages. incoming sms works, outgoing - no.
there is no need to set to automatic. in service menu there is point where you can set preferred network type LTE_GSM_UMTS., but again, sms does not work.

No clue maybe do ##72786# it will reset the phones modem settings and it will nag about activation again and relock the phone but I did it since I can unlock it myself again and never had an issue.
Weird thing is that my phone after unlock it wanted activation popup and then it actually went through and it went away with my T-Mobile sim.

Ok found something out for some reason if you do not get LTE after setting it to Automatic switch to LTE/CDMA let it reboot and Reswitch it to Automatic reboot again then LTE+GSM_WCDMA should work.
Do you mean in service mode select cdma/lte then reboot and then go back to service mode n select gsm/wcdma/lte? Because ive been trying that fkr hkurs since reading your post lol. If this works your a beast . We need a gsm rom for this phone tho

hmmm, been in the same boat with T-Mobile and a G920P, with only 3G being picked up but after switching it to automatic, it picked up LTE! Thanks for the poiter. However, have you been able to get MMS enabled or working as I seem to have issues with that and not sure why it isn't downloading the messages. Not sure if I need to give T-Mo a call and get something enabled or what. BTW, how did you manage to make that annoying activation screen go away as the moment I got it unlocked and popped in my sim card, it can't ever activate, but works fine though
any one succeeded in unlocking bands
Has anyone had any success enabling additional bands on a Sprint S6? Basically the bands it comes unlocked with are useless for Europe 4g and would love to unlock bands 3, 7, 20, 28, however 3 & 7 would be enough.

Same here. seems to me Samsung does not give us open source to edit Exynos settings. As I'm aware, our phones' hardware is capable to get those bands

Advanced calling

Well I searched first before asking this. I called Verizon because I have no data when on the phone. They said I had advanced calling, but removed it then added it again. Still no data while on the phone. They said I should have the option to turn it on and off under cellular networks, I do not have it. I then called google who said it should work but pushed the problem back to Verizon.
Anyone else have this problem? Verizon also said maybe it was because I bought the phone from google.
Try *#*#4636#*#* then phone information and see if VoLTE is provisioned. There is a toggle there for it. If it isn't, toggle it on then reboot and recheck settings - more - cellular networks and see if advanced calling is listed.

I had it with stock 7.1.1 but when I flashed DU rom I lost it. Even toggling it in *#*#4636#*#* doesn't enable it.
Flash a stock image and you will have it back...
Oh, you didn't say you had flashed DU, that's important info. Yup, flash stock it will return.

I tried everything here and more. Nothing worked. I factory reset the phone and now its back. I was always stock and had not loaded anything on my phone. I did and still do have it unlocked but have done nothing else. I don't understand why it was not there. I am just happy it's back after reset.
I have been on the phone with google and Verizon for hours. All I have to say is I should have come to XDADev my real home. This is why this site and the users on this site ROCK!. Thank you ahent!!!

HD Voice/Video calling on Verizon with Google version of device?

Does HD voice or HD video calling on Verizon work with the Google Play Store (unlocked) version of the Pixel 2 XL? I see no settings for it at all like before in the settings, guess I just figured once I popped my Verizon sim card in that it would enable HD voice/video calling, no? Anybody else have any input on this? Do I have to get the VZW version to get HD Voice/Video calling?
EDIT: After I popped in my Verizon sim I rebooted it and let it 'settle' for 10 mins before I touched it again and now I see the "Advanced Calling" toggle in the settings (which was already on) and then I went and tested it by calling my wife and it is indeed HD now and HD logos appear on both of our phones.

Once you enter your Verizon sim, go to the Play Store and allow it to install all the Verizon apps. Also let it do all the app updates. Once all that is completed reboot your device. Then once you are booted back into your phone, go to the connectivity in settings, tap on mobile network, tap on Advanced, and you should see the HD calling options.

Thank you all, this is what I did to make it work (for anyone else having these issues on prepaid)
I went into features in my account on the Verizon website, disabled and re-enabled HD Voice. Then, I went into *#*#4636#*#* hidden menu and tapped "TRIGGER CARRIER PROVISIONING". When into the Google Play Store and saw "Carrier Services" was disabled. I enabled it and updated it. Waited about 5 mins for provisioning to be done. Rebooted and put in a post-paid Verizon SIM on a corporate account. Removed that SIM, put in my prepaid SIM and rebooted again.
Now it works and I noticed that the Carrier Services APK is disabled again. Strange, but It's working and no need for any Verizon bloatware. I see "HD" on the middle of the screen when on a call with another HD Voice enabled phone. Which I did not see before when calling/testing the same number.
Not sure what really fixed it though, I will update the thread if it stops working. I am also aware that Advanced Calling is needed for HD Voice, technically it does more than just HD Voice. So HD Voice is a part of Advanced Calling features and not "it is HD calling".

This ^^^^^
This is actually how i got VOLTE working. Before i did this i had no data while in voice calls.. Of course this was also after not being able to edit the APN's without playing musical sim cards. What a pain..
But yes, this dialer trick should work.. As soon as i did it, i saw the hd calling features amongst a few other hidden features being enabled/available..
Im on Straight Talk Verizon so as far as the thing about the carrier side being enabled, I dont know, i would assume Straight Talk doesn't offer optional luxuries like that. .. just the ability to use data while in call.
So glad I found this. I have the Pixel XL and I was getting frustrated that HD voice was not working. Google was no help, Verizon was no help either. This should be pinned to the top! Thanks!
