Lightflow - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seen reports of people saying Lightflow messes with Ambient Display. Can anyone confirm this?

This should be in Q&A section. Anyway, I have both Ambient Display and Light Flow on. Light Flow does not mess with AD, and works quite well with it. Light flow colors work. I have the Pro version of Light Flow.

Sorry, the question is about an app so I thought goes here? Anyway. How does your AB work? Does it pulse randomly (like Moto X) or only when lifted or notification?

I used light flow pro and it forced screen wakes for a few minutes without a notification being present then it calms down. I uninstalled it and ambient display stays off unless there is a notification

Got it. Without Lightflow, there are only 3-4 pulses. With, it never ends.

Ah, I noticed that too but hadn't put that down to Light Flow.
I have a GWR, so disabled Ambient Display anyway.
Has anyone got the Sleep function to work?
No matter what Light Flow settings I use - at night, the LED continues to light up my room, so I have to leave the phone face-down at the moment...
I've been emailing the developer about it - but he's waiting for his 5X to turn up (as he's also ordered a 6P, he has to wait for that to turn up in the same delivery...)

I have enabled notification light through Settings and am able to generate a white light flash (repeating) when gmail receives. Has anyone noted fingerprint security have any negative impacts on notifications like this (more curiosity than anything)?
Admittedly its been some time since I have had to use lightflow pro; good app, just been awhile so I may be rusty on settings I am betting.

Lightflow is one of my standard apps. Unfortunately, it was draining my battery on the 5x regardless of the settings I had set. Looking forward to an update after the dev can optimize for MM/5X/6P.

Anyone else having an issue with lightflow and mms alerts needing to be cleared manually in the app?

To anyone who has Lightflow pro running well: would you mind posting your settings?
I've tried every combination I can think of: root mode on/off, run every command as root on/off, etc. The best the app can manage is a brief pulse on, then off, then a quick on/off before the LED stays off. Have tried direct mode, too. Tried the Legacy version, but it doesn't cover a lot of apps.
I can't seem to get any consistent results otherwise.

To be honest, I gave up and now use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3244601

Just as a note: I looked at their website, and tried installing the Legacy version without uninstalling the paid version. All apps show. Legacy version works fine.

Yes! I just got the 5x and am settling down with stock Android for a while. Rooted and Xposed. It will be maybe 2-3 days before I start installing custom ROMs! Thanks for the headsup on this particular ROM!

I have only had it for one night but it seemed to work fine for me. I changed the sleep method to "time" (it defaults to NFC or something) and set the "start time" to 10:30pm and the "end time" to 6:00AM. I also have ambient display disabled. I am not sure what GWR is though. Also make sure in each app notification setting you do not have "exclude from sleep mode" checked.

I'm using paid version of LF. For now I'm not rooted.
I noticed behaviour you've already talked about.
1. If I'm using ambient screen I always have notifiction icon "Number of notifications". Can I hide that?
I know I can hide it if I disable app notification, but in that case Light flow don't work anymore ...
2. Is there any solution with messing ambient screen and LW led. After recieved notification ambient lights on few times and completely mess up LF ...
Is Legacy version solving those problems?
Thank you.
edit: I solved problem with legacy.

I have en issue with lighflow legacy that when I set my gmail notification to switch screen on, it won't play the notification sound correctly, the screen will light and notification sound is not completed when email is received, it is like once the screen switch on, the notification sound won't complete till the end. Anyone noticed that? disabling switch screen on, will make the notification sound fine.

I have this problem with a N5x and LightFlow.
It doesnt matter if I do use Lightflow normal or legacy, because on legacy I kept seeing a Lightflow notification and the screen turns on with ambient display continuously due to this :S

[APP] Light Flow

the developer has claimed the latest version on the play store is working for rooted phones, but I still am not having the best of success. I thought I'd start a thread and see how others are fairing.
The newest version has some improvement; being able to select different colors for different notifications and actually getting them to go off when you've pulled down the notification bar. however, it doesn't blink for me at all. When i get a text or email the corresponding light is a steady constant light if the screen is asleep. If you wake it up the light either disappears or only lights up very infrequently.
I've read some posts before the latest versions came out that some users had success getting it to work by actually turning Accessibility off. This seems to turn off the entire app for me.
anyone having better luck?
I didn't have much luck with it either. The app itself would become very unresponsive over time and I'd have to kill its process for it to respond again. I'm pretty sure I read that he may add the pulsing light option to more of the indicators in the future, but it's not something that is supposed to work right now. (Aside from the selections that do pulse.)
mine works great via cm10 and aokp jb make sure you turn off system notification light pulse etc and then check

you need to enable Samsung S3 mode. otherwise the light will stay green as for some reason in Samsung's software, "black" (off) is green and all the other colors are mixed.
anyone know if there is going to be options of other color blinking lights? the only options are blue and red. I want other blinking colors.

He's added code that works with rooted phones and allows all normal colors to flash plus keeps flashing red and pulsing blue. But it doesn't support custom colors. I will say this dev has done a lot of work to overcome Samsung's screw up of LED color matrix on U.S, models. The version for unrooted US S3 didn't work at all for me on rooted phone. I don't what iteration of v3.0.5 he has on Play at the moment.

yea..thoes are all i have.. soon i suppose. Green, and Yellow and orange would be nice if they could blink.. lol
I use the built in settings in paranoid android 1.9.6 no troubles, plus you specify apps for notification like lighflow, just a suggestion if you plan on trying another rom. I do love that app though.

The app works flawlessly with blinking blue and blinking red for me. As stated above make sure you have the SG3 Mode enabled and Accessibility enabled. Andrew is really busting his tail to ge this working based on the US version problems. He is very close with e non-rooted version.
I would suggest starting by disabling all notification in Lighflow and then do one at a time. Also make sure you disable the LED in Android Settings because it conflicts.
I'm using cm10s led settings all with custom colors and they work perfectly. The only reason I didn't like light flow was you could never kill app in recent apps or it would stop working.

Just got schooled by this app. If you use the backup feature, you can't simply do a restore after flashing a new/updated ROM (with full wipe). You have to go and cycle the S3 mode toggle after the restore. If you don't, the S3 mode will be checked, but it never went to su for access, and it won't work. There's 30 or so minutes of my life gone forever.

Light Flow has been updated. You can now flash all colors of LEDs and not just the red and blue. Non rooted users now have support also.

I wish.
Here's my standard response!
This seems to be an ICS/Samsung bug. It happens for some people and also with other apps that use the accessibility service such as Tasker, Llama and others.
Try the following that I've just been posted someone has tried:
For those who wants to try it do the following with your Samsung S3: - Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Talkback "ON" - Select "Settings" from the bottom of the page - Uncheck all Talkback options - Switch Talkback "Off" again - Go back to Settings -> Application manager -> All - Disable Google TTS (text to speech) - Disable Samsung TTS (text to speech)
I've reported this to samsung's research and development team and I've been told their development team is looking into it.
It doesn't happen with phones on ICS from other manufacturers.
I am still looking into ways around it though.
Bummer thanks for trying nice to have flashing working but don't like looking like a duffis in front of others when I go in my folders.

There seems to be a bug with the "USA and Canada S3 mode" it works fine with the root option, but with the US variant, in two hours, Light Flow was my number two app in Battery usage, and brought my power from 100% to 73%. For now I'm going to keep testing and see why it's doing this.
Has anybody else notice Android OS and Light Flow (number 1 and 2 on the list) use large amounts of cycles?
Cheers
The update app ruin the light on me using att sgs3 the pulse blue light does blink and then pulse then turn off. When you try to select the blue blinking light it does not light at all. Revert back to the previous apk and it fix it

No LED Notifications

This is hands-down the best phone I have ever used, but I am quite disappointed that the LED notification light was omitted from the hardware.
I was hoping I could use the NoLED app to display notifications instead, on the always-on-display, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work.
Does anyone know of any way to display notifications (i.e. text messages, emails, missed calls, etc.) on the always-on-display?

I contacted Huawei about this. I received a canned response, but if enough people request all notifications on always-on-display, maybe they will listen.

Disable messaging and install Google phone and Messages. Mark them as default apps and give them proper rights and you'll have all notifications (home and lock screen). Don't know for Gmail, I use email.

I also missed the notification led on my EVR-AL00 coming from my Mi Mix. Its a pitty that Huawei does not show all notifications on the always on display.
In the last days I evaluated some of the available amoled always on apps in the play store.
Finally I now use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newgen.alwayson as daily driver.

Compared to other available amoled always on apps it has several advantages:
Shows weather
Displays notification icons
Has optional a simulated notification led
Notifications can be previewed directly
It works for me with direct fingerprint unlock (others close the always on and you have to rescan again in the normal lock screen)
It also has some disadvantages:
Notification Led color and size cannot be customized
It offers a flashing edge, but this cannot be configured a lot and does not use the whole screen, which looks like bad
Weather only shows one configured location, no tracking based on GPS (it cat be set by GPS manually)
To get it work...
Disable Huawei always on
Set all rights for Autostart manually for this app
Exclude it from battery optimization
Give it all rights (I dont use the Cutted Edge feature, so it is not necessary to give draw over other apps right)
Configure the app without Open Camera on slide to left, it does not work
There is another app which has the best looking edge lightning https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe But I did not manage to see edge lighting + notification icons in this app and I always had to scan fingerprint twice.
I Have chines version AL00 and no problem with notification without led. Apk NoLed working perfect and I no longer miss the diode I was used to in Note 10. It was only possible to play in the settings and I'm happy. So i solved the problem with Nova launcher when I installed apk Fluid N.G. All I miss is a double tap on display on the Note 8, but I've already used to unlock my face or connect Xiaomi Stratos watch.
Yes works well for those that use always on display, but not if you don't.

Yes but I can not see why it is not used when it is the only way to display a no LED diode notification. The app has no effect on the battery life and I have a SOT over 13h and I usually spend over 2 days! Who has trouble with Always on display?
Good point. But led blinker is nice.

Yes, led blink is nice, but Mate 20X does not have it, which is a shame and I do not understand it because the Mate 20 diode is right over the camera in the tear ...
Just check out a YouTube video, the honor view 20 has a led notification light on the top. Mate 20 and pro also has it. Only mate 20x doesn't, that's sad!
NoLED is cool but the fingerprint sensor doesn't work properly, you have to press the power button first to be able to unlock with fingerprint.
Anyone knows a workaround or similar app? I've seen several for the OP6 but they don't seem to work with our phone.

Normally not, but Samsung will on messages app for example
Any chance you could add functionality for use as a battery indicator?
Does notification light blink constantly like on the note 9 and older until the notification is cleared? I'm not exactly sure on how to set this up.

I also noticed this when I was setting it up but all seems to be OK now with the ring light.
One thing I am seeing is a white dot flashing to the right of the camera cut out
My ring light still shows only the bottom bit.
Can u share settings?
That white dot could be the proximity sensor. Try covering it. The screen might go off. If it does, it's the sensor like on the S10.

If you don't need the Always On Display, the app can also activate the Always On Display (AOD) only on notifications or show the notification light / LED even without the Always On Display!
With the notification preview feature you can directly see if you have important notifications without waking your Galaxy Note10!
MAIN FEATURES:
• Notification light / LED for Galaxy S20, S10, Note 10 and others!
• Low energy notification preview (android 10+)

MORE FEATURES:

The cutout may need some minor adjustments. Will be optimized in upcoming releases.

Yes, still adjusting a little fore note 10. When i have a final release ill readd.
Playstore is always up to date.
this is great, was looking for something like this after seeing the Note 10+ didn't have a notification LED, it's such an important feature when you want to leave your phone on a table and see notifications or if its charged as you walk past or from across the room.
will definately be using this when my Note 10+ comes.

Hello?
Note 10+ is supported right? I'm having an issue where the camera cutout lighting is cutoff when the screen is off (AOD on). I only see the very bottom of the lighting.

No, there will be a new app as Note doesnt have a Bixby button anymore.

Should work fine , getting my note soon, then ill optimize positions.
Does it work when the screen is on? You can also adjust position in aodNotify settings

It's perfectly located when the screen is on. I'm also a software developer and I spent a little while playing around with an opensource version of a similar app (Holey Light). I think the issue is that the AOD doesn't stretch to the edge of the device on the Note 10/10+ like it does on the S10; it cuts off at the front camera. Hopefully there's a way to bypass that.
So far I love this. Great feature.
Can this support battery % also? Energy ring still hasnt made it correctly for note 10+
Set it up now just waiting for a text to see the notification. Thanks for this

How To Guide Control Always On Display via Tasker

I like using AOD but don't need it on when I'm sleeping. I had the same need with my Pixel 3XL. Same solution works with Tasker on the 6 Pro. I'm just going to turn it off from 11pm to 7am but you could do it for all sorts of situations such as when connected to a certain BT device (in car for example). One time tasker setup will require you to turn on USB debugging and run the command
adb shell pm grant net.dinglisch.android.taskerm android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

Here it is in Taskernet. Turn AOD Off/On a schedule
Thanks, it's been a while since I used Tasker and other apps like it, but I might try this.
Thx a bunch! Was looking for this. Will try the same.
One suggestion: Can you maybe also share your tasker project on Taskernet? Than it would be really easy for anyone to import and try it out.

Good idea. I haven't done much with Tasker in a few years so didn't even know about Taskernet. Hopefully this works? Turn AOD Off/On a schedule
you can set the do not disturb times and the AOD goes off

That's what I've done on other devices and will try it on this 6 Pro! cheers
Scheduler based on time is nice.
Now what I would like to do is to have AOD only enabled when there is an unnoticed active notification on my phone. So that I kinda make AOD as my notifiaction LED replacement?
Using Tasker to toggle AOD is a great solution. Alternatively, I just turn my phone over so the display faces down. This also causes the AOD to turn off. I do this before going to sleep or during the day when I don't need to keep an eye on the display.

aodNotify has a function for this. However, as I understand it, it simply draws over AOD to make it black. I do not know this for a fact,so someone please chime in. However, if the display is black, I would imagine that there is some battery savings, so long as the app is not chewing up more in return. It does, though, tell you when there is a notification because the screen is lit.

I believe your interpretation is correct, or at least close enough.

I am not so sure about the battery saving because this means that both AOD and AODNotify will be active all the time. Actually having just AOD online all the time would consume less battery. So AODNotify gets useless in the end?

There's an event of "notification" that you could add. There's also a variable you could check to see if the screen is off. Then set that to AOD On. I just tried that and it worked fine.
I'd have to do some testing to see the best way to turn AOD back off when there aren't any notifications but there's probably a way to look at screen off and no notifications.

I've done it already and have been using it in Tasker since the Pixel 3. It's been a crazy week for me, so please be patient and I'll report back later with screen shots and/or a taskernet link for you to download.

Works fine on Pixel 5(CrDroid 7.21, Android 11), but when this is enabled on AOD also appears alarm icon set to 10 minutes in the future and time of the alarm changes with time and is exactly 10 minutes ahead.
Why? How to turn this off?

I've had that too. It can be disabled in Tasker preferences and disabling Reliable Alarms. Otherwise I think there's an app called System UI Tuner that can be used to remove icons from the task bar including alarm.
As of the May update (to Pixel 6Pro and Tasker) I get a message Cannot run settings. Error says Need newer version (or missing?) of tasker setting app. Please contact developer.
I emailed tasker dev, but while he's Out of Office I thought I'd ask here to anyone else getting this message and error?
Reply from developer.
Hi there. Are you please able to install this app on your phone and then try again from Tasker? Thanks in advance.
Also, be sure to give the app the needed permissions via ADB (https://tasker.joaoapps.com/userguide/en/help/ah_secure_setting_grant.html) but with the package name set to com.joaomgcd.taskersettings instead of net.dinglisch.android.taskerm.
Also, make sure to exempt the Tasker Settings app from battery optimization (https://tasker.joaoapps.com/userguide/en/faqs/faq-problem.html#00) so that Tasker can call it in the background.
Check here for more info on this: https://tasker.joaoapps.com/userguide/en/target_api.html

Fun fact, there is an alternative for people like me who cannot really pay for tasker.
You can configure Bedtime Mode to also turn off the always-on display and then adjust your alarm like usual
