Bottom speaker quieter than top speaker? - Xperia Z5 Premium Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that the bottom speaker on my Z5 premium is quieter than the top one. I have tried using landscape, the left/top speaker is always louder.
When starting speaker phone, which produces audio out of the bottom speaker, it is louder briefly before returning to a lower volume. I also notice this when starting music after the phone has been quiet for a while. The bottom speaker starts of loud then it sounds as though it fades to a lower level.
A method to reproduce the bug: Enter the service menu by entering *#*#7378423#*#* into the dialer, selecting "Service tests" and then the "Stereo speaker Right" test. You may find that it begins louder then fades quieter soon after the test begins. If not, play the "Earphone" test and then repeat the Stereo speaker Right test, and you should find that it begins louder than before, before fading quieter as soon as the test begins playing
Anyone else?
EDIT: a more foolproof method, start playing music in Google Play Music or your music player of choice, go into the above service menu and play the earphone test. As soon as the earphone test finishes and your music resumes, it'll be clearly louder in both speakers before the bottom/right speaker fades quieter again.
Hopefully sony fix this quickly!

Same here, although voices seem to be central?

Mine is fine this morning! Coming out of both speakers as it should! Weird. Literally just charged it overnight and tried again this morning after my Timely Alarm went off

Now that's weird.

We had a post about this when the Z5 came out. I and a few others had the same problem and it rectified itself over night.
Mine has been fine for ages, I've just flashed new generic software for the UK and the problem is back again. I'm hoping it will sort itself out like it did last time. Its definitely software and not hardware related

Under audio settings enable Dynamic Normalizer ,that fixed the issue for me.

Sure does, mine is so low I thought the bottom wasn't on. I'm very disappointed with battery, stereo speakers, and heating!

After reading your comment and a few others I am very concerned now about my Z5P, It is being delivered tomorrow and I would have thought that with such a big battery running in 1080p most of the time the battery life should be great. Also heat issues sound concerning aswell as the speaker issue
All phones for me are hopeless this year

Don't worry, your Z5P will kick ass...the heat issues are probably least of a concern with this phone compared to other 810 phones...and quite honestly, you should WANT the phone to run in 1080p outside of viewing pictures and videos... There is absolutely nothing to be gained by having 4k on all the time...but if that is something you want, it can easily be achieved by changing the DPI...no root or bootloader unlock is required... Being a Nexus 6P owner, I can honestly say the Sony is still better even running 5.1.1

Yea the battery is a little better today, but still not ideal for its size. On a bright note although it's a heat sink the performance is OUTSTANDING!!! no matter how hot it gets, I haven't noticed any decrease in performance. I also haven't noticed the "over heat" process running in the background yet. This was a common site on my z ultra!

Thanks I am not concerned about 4K infact thats not even the reason why I am getting this, I wanted a bigger screen than the z5 and bigger battery. I am glad its 1080p most of the time. that is a good thing infact I wish it was just 1080p.
My concerns are the battery life as if its running 1080p the battery life should be great ith a 3430 mah cell

See that still not ideal for its size is concerning tbh.

So I don't have a speaker issue as such but the speakers on this phone are not very loud and tbh, I am tired of this whole stereo speaker stuff I don't buy into it, before anyone mentions that the phone is water proof/resistant. I don't buy it on HTCs or the Nexus 6P either. Imo the bottom mounted single speaker on my GS6 and IP6S sound better, fuller & louder.

I know that this is an old thread but that's what the search feature is for.
This fixed my louder top speaker issue and has had the added bonus of increasing the volume of YouTube too. Thank you.

SOLVED!!
I have solved it
First step, empty the media volume bar, then restart your phone
Second step, turn your phone on, and play music with no volume, then increase it gently.
Voila!! Your bottom speaker now has equal volume with top speaker

Problem persisting even after a phone replacement

Does your speaker work fine now? I had mine stopped working and got a replacement from the company. But after 40 days the problem is back again. There is a 7db difference in the loudness of both the speakers. My original phone used to do the same. Loud for a moment but then quite at the end. But gradually the bottom speaker lost all of its sounds and I wasn't able to use the loudspeaker feature while calling and the company swapped it for me, probably with a refurbished model. Respond to me and help me out or I'll be damned after the warranty period expires.

Speaker/headphone volume VERY low.....

I sold my HD2 on Thursday and let me say first off that I have no regrets whatsoever: I absolutely love this phone. Before I sold the HD2 I played some music tracks on both devices through the loudspeaker and headphones jack and noticed a HUGE differential in volume.....I thought the HD2 speaker was pretty tinny but it was at least audible; the Desire speaker volume is incredibly underpowered...being practically inaudible in a moderately noisy environment. This problem seems to extend even as far as the headphones socket since some of the songs I was unable to play at full volume on the HD2 for fear of bursting my eardrums are simply not loud enough for me on the Desire.
Am I the only person to think the volume levels are too low? Is there perhaps a way to increase the pre amp levels. It's as quiet as the first generation iPhone which was REALLY BAD.
Any thoughts from anyone here?
Hi there - I've been searching online to see if anyone else has been having this problem and came across your post.
Had my Desire for a week now, and I love it. But the volume via headphones is WAY too low. Stupidly too low. I can't hear it on the tube at all, for example.
I was looking forward to using it - and Spotify, in partcular - as a replacement for my aging iPod. But there's just no way.
I can't believe this is common to every phone, as surely there would be more people complaining about it. Are there different firmware versions knocking about? It's got me pretty frustrated.
Ok this is not nice, speaker volume is very important to me. This is the first time I see somebody be this negative about it though...
Damn..
Further, you coming from the HD2, any more thoughts you want to share about the switch?
How is the 4.3 inch to 3.7 inch 'jump'?
Kind regards
Screen size is not a problem for me, colours are beautiful on the Desire and the screen seems note responsive. I tried using the HD2 for a day after getting the Desire and hated it bycomparison! Only massive annoyance though is that it is nowhere near as loud.
I suspect that people are still in their honeymoon period with the phone and that complaints will start to surface about the speaker volume in time. As far as I can recall all my other Android devices were a lot louder than this.
Don't have the device yet but in a video review the guy said the speaker was pretty loud, so it's probably only a software problem

Juste buy in-ear headphones ! your ear will thanks you, pushing the volume to 100db because the tube is masking noise : not a good idea believe me.
I too, coming from an iPhone, find the headphone volume painfully low.
I use an under speaker pillow to listen to podcasts without disturbing the wife, and on the iPhone she'd sometimes complain that she could hear it. Now with the Desire I find that sometimes I can't hear it and that's at full volume.
I know this is probably obvious but I take it you have gone through. Audio settings
And maxed the volume? And checked any volume controls on headphones? If both set to max
And still not loud then the handset is faulty so get it replaced
Now!!
Mine set to max would be at ear bleeding levels!!
The speaker quality isn't great, but considering I don't use them that much it is good enough for me.
Am a little surprised with the headphone issues, considering that I have my volume set just under halfway and it is more than loud enough for me.
I am using my Sennheiser earphones, but the volume is fine with the supplied HTC ones too.
what kind of bit-rates are you using for music? ... 128? or more, ... as the quality effects the loudness somehow I believe.
try experimenting with different bit rates and see how that goes

I think this might be due to new UE regulations about maximum volume in mobile devices, though im not 100% sure if its already in the system.
However Im pretty sure that in couple days/weeks there will be some hacks/apps/ to change that
So have I got a faulty phone?
Or are people just overly forgiving??
Everything is set to max. I've also noticed that the Mic quality in videos is also shockingly poor in terms of volume. I wonder if all of these functions are shared by the same chipset.
leoni, I'm having just the same problem. I think it must be a problem with some of these phones. I can't believe that people are just being overly forgiving.
I'm not looking to push the volume up too high, but if I can't hear it when there's a little background noise going on, then that's a serious design flaw.
I'd like to do a comparison with another Desire at some point, hopefully I'll bump into someone using one soon...
Just to answer some of the above questions/suggestions:-
I'm using MP3s in 256k bit rate format. All volume controls are set to max and there is no volume control on the headphones I am using.
I'm sending mine back. I'm due an upgrade on Monday anyway so I'll test one in the shop and see if It's the same. The headphone volume is the main issue for me; its just too low.
I also think that the volume is way too low. Just out of curiosity, could this be a Rom issue? I'm using the stock TMO Rom. To the people who think it's loud enough, which Rom are you on?
My biggest problem is with the volume through the headphones....speaker volume I can live with, though it is crap and tinny
I think this must be an issue on your phone or you expect it to be crazy loud. I swapped out my ipod for this today on a good set of headphones (AKG KE518LE's) and the volume levels seem identical. As for the speaker, i find mine is a tad on the loud side to be honest. I find myself having to knock it dont a few notches on the volume.

are you on TMO ROM?
Loud speaker isn't audible above the sound of my shower, which is a real shame as coming from a n95 8gb the loud speaker was great. Oh well. I'm a forgiving type!
I have found music volume to be pretty low but I'm fairly convinced it is a software/Rom issue because the volume in some applications is loud! Doesn't made much sense. Running T-mob here.

Speaker making slight hissing and a click noise

Is anyone getting these slight clicking noise from the speaker whenever the phone is in use, like opening an app for example. I got my phone phone from the launch event (5th in line!! ) and i only noticed when it was really quiet in my room these noises came from the speakers.
To check, open an app and quickly put your ear to the speaker and I hear a hissing noise then a soft click. Always happens when i open an app!
I went back to Phones4U, the guy could tell it was faulty so I got it replaced..now same problem!! (not as loud as before, but still there)
Anyone having the same problem? can anyone check for me? this can't be normal!

Someone on another forum posted they had the same, so it might not be an isolated problem.
Isn't that just the touch click?

No, I have that turned off.
It happens whenever the speaker is used - when the sound stops there is a quiet hiss, followed by a pop as the speaker switches off.
Try it - hold the speaker right up to your ear, and use the volume rocker to hear the beep. Afterwards there is hiss followed by a pop.
It's not noticeable enough to be an issue (for me) in normal use, but you can hear it if you're in a quiet room.

The click comes like 3 seconds after you make an input, so it doesn't sound right and it just sounds random (and annoying).

Heh, that's certainly got something to do with it
As I say it's not really an issue, and it's not unique to this phone (as you point out). Just one of those annoying niggles - it depends on how sensitive you are to these things
Yes - I have the same problem with my new Galaxy Nexus. In fact, even if it's not a problem for most people, I'd say it is a problem for Samsung because I returned my phone yesterday and got it swapped out. The new one has the same problem, so I assume it's an Android software problem rather than a hardware glitch.
So that's at least two returns caused by this problem. Hope we get a fix at some point!
p.s. Phone is great by the way, even with the annoying click.
Guys
This is hardware problem. And it happens on most of the speakers however its more or less noticeable on some devices.
I have quite good quality monitors (studio speakers) and i can hear something hissing in the back.
Let me put it that way.
Every speaker needs electricity to work. The noise you are hearing is the actual electric current coming through the speakers. The sudden pop and lack of the hiss means that speaker has been turned off. For obvious reasons there is no point for the speaker to work constantly....
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I can't hear any click when I plug headphones in, so maybe you're right - the click could be when the amplifier that powers the internal speaker turns off...
However, for some reason I still get a click if the phone is in silent mode. I guess putting it in silent mode doesn't guarantee it keeps the amplifier turned off.
I hope it's just the speakers; the DAC in my HD2 hissed for a few seconds after any sounds even through my headphones. The hissing was always there when there was sound. It was quite depressing. I'm hoping for a good DAC in the Galaxy nexus.
I've got a click (sounds just like a quite speaker pop) from the back cover.
Turn your GN over and push the back cover, on the "Google" logo (below the camera flash). Then quickly release your finger.
Sometime it can happen with only the lightest of touches. If i put my phone down on my chest, the pick it up.
If you look really closely you can see the cover moving just below the camera surround.
Issue has been reported to google.

I have this issue on my gnex. Its def a sw problem. I took the back cover off and still have the issue.
slightly different, but also hiss related...
my rezound does the same thing when headphones(or aux to car) are plugged in and nothing is playing. once you start to play something you don't notice it. and its a confirmed issue.
It's a hardware issue guys, depends on the audio chip I believe. Impedance-related.
Here is the other thread with this annoying sound

It isn't just on the speaker either. Atleast on my Galaxy Nexus, I can hear it when listening on high end professional in-ear headphones. I can verify that it is almost certainly a signal isolation problem. The activity causes the DAC (the thing that makes a digital signal into an analog signal that speakers and headphones need) to kick on for a few seconds and until it shuts off you can hear the noise coming out of the DAC. It's pretty substantial on mine though, so I'm wondering if I got a bad unit. I'll have to stop by a Verizon Wireless store and plug in to the display unit to see if it is any better. I never noticed this on my Galaxy S (Fascinate).
My unit is also affected, it was made in Vietnam. I checked the Google Code issue tracker link (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22307) and I can see many people confirming this also. This is definitely not how the speaker should work - I checked another Samsung phone (SGS II) and there's no such "clicks". There's some silent noise but not the click.
I can hear it from the speaker only, not through the headphones.
I think many users are unaware of the issue because it is often only noticeable in a silent environment.
Yes getting same issue. Have tried different ROMS to no avail

[Q] Sound distortion, anyone have same problem?

I have a really big issue with my HTC One V, since i used to listen to a lots of music on my old phone, i hoped the sound quality would be at least decent on One V, but i hear a lot of background noise in my earphones, not the stock ones ofc, since they are really crappy, i have t-Jays One, which quality is rather superior, but on this phone i hear a lot of cracing noise, like some magnetic/electronic distortion, wich is unbelievably annoying, and it's hearable even with music off, right after i plug in my earphones, is that a reason to give my phone back, or have it repaced? (European version)
If I turn the volume up 100% I can hear a (very) slight amount of noise, but other than that the quality is excellent with zero cracking.
i don't have that issue with stock earphone..
i dont hv, my one v play music really good
Thanks guys, i'll just get it replaced, i guess you can lock this thread...
I have a One V with me and it too has a lot of background noise through the headphone jack. With the headphones plugged in there is no noise but the moment some sound starts playing on the phone you can clearly hear it and it's constant regardless of the volume of the music or whatever you are listening to. While you should get your phone replaced, there is a chance that the new one might have the same issue.
I had a terrible noise problem as well, but over time it slowly decreases. Noise is not yet completely lost, but now is in a tolerant level.
Interesting, is not it?
I have it too. Sometimes noise is so annoying it makes me want to trow off the phone. Noise is present even at boot sound. Changing headphones helps nothing. I had SGS earlier and it had perfect sound with it's wolfson dac, so I'm very disappointed now.
Hi there, I just bought this phone and I'm having the same problem... Did anyone find a solution? Anyone got it replaced and solved the problem?
I think I'm replacing mine as well, this noise problem is really anoying...

Low volume or distorted speaker

Hi.
I'm on the new android 1.4 update with speaker support. When I make a phone call, I either get really low volume on the speaker (have to put my to my ears to listen) or the speaker has decent volume and distorts (like when you play loud music on tiny speakers). I'm wondering for those with the new update if that's normal or there might be an issue with my watch
Thanks
Unfortunately, I think it's an issue with your watch. The speaker is actually pretty loud, you can easily hear the voice from 2 meters away. The sound itself is also pretty clear, of course bass performance is reduced, but the speaker is suitable for phone calls.

Thanks for your reply. Is your watch the same volume all the time if you don't adjust the volume. My watch works fine at times and then for no reason you can barely hear anything and have to put the watch upto your ear. Also do you get any distortion at all on phone calls i.e. squeaky or mumbling voice

No afraid not. Have contacted Huawei support today in the UK and they have escalated it to head office and will let me know what happens next. Will update the thread when I hear something back
http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenwatch-2/general/speaker-scratch-call-volume-maximum-t3332476
Zenwatch 2 have the same problem... So i think that the problem it's on android 6.0.1... The volume in call it's very low and if you use in a car, it's difficoult to hear! Also the speaker as you said distorts the sound !!! This , however, does not happen by listening to the music ! if you use google play the sound is higher than the call! but high- volume music have a scratch
Ensure that the speaker port is clear. It can become blocked and the result is distorted sound.
Update
Update, after contacting Huawei support. They sent me a prepaid envelope to ship my watch to a third party repair centre SBE Ltd. I sent it off on Thursday and they received it next day Friday. This morning I received a brand new replacement sealed box. I have tested this one out and there is no issues with it. Sound is clear with no distortion.
Seems I'm having the same problem, hardly use the speaker, don't even play it loud when I do and out of the blue the speaker is distorted. Sigh
I have the same issue now with my replacement Huawei watch. Very annoying. It's completely unpredictable when it distorts as sometimes it's fine and other times its distorted. It sounds like someone trying to speak through their nose. Very distorted.
The only thing I can think of is the place I work at is quite dusty as I do warehouse work so maybe the speaker has dust inside

I can't get a recording as I've sent the watch back to the service Centre. The distortion when it occurs is so obvious that you can tell it's a defect with the speaker as even half volume is distorted.

Hi, I've been going crazy trying to figure out the same thing. My music volume on my watch is really loud and phone call volume is so low, it sounds like a whisper. This makes no sense! I contact Huawei and they said there is no way to change the volume of the phone call. Maybe it is a bug! I don't know if I should try to get a replacement or just wait it out for a new update to fix the issue. Anyone found a solution??

Post no 7 mentions a similar issue with the Asus zenwatch 2 as what you describe. So check that thread as well. I can't help much as my issue was constant whether it was listening to music or during a phone call.
Also I know if you get water in the speaker opening then the sound will temporarily go quiet but once it's dried then it will return back to normal.

When You are in a call - incoming - there is options on the call screen swiping up. There is Volume and others (dialer, mute, etc...). Try it!
Same problem here. The sound is so low, almost mute and crunchy. I'll contact to huawei for a replacement.
That normally happens when water has gotten in the speaker. I would wait till it's dried out and check again.
Even though the watch is water resistant there is a sort of chamber after the speaker grille that water will sit in before it's evaporated. It happens to me often when washing my hands.
Hi I know this thread is pretty old and I don't want to hijack this thread but I have a question. I want to buy a smart watch that has a good speaker for music. I've got two choices Huawei Watch and Gear s2 3G. Which one should I buy?

Mine doesnt
Yep very poppy speaker at near full volume, sou D's like the membrane is cheap.
Not impressed with it playing music or videos yet, most of the time I use BT audio I'm my car anyway.
for the price i would have thought the speaker would have been better quality, which my note 7 had, on the plus side the Pixel XL wont spontaneously combust
The headphone/earpiece speaker is made of cloth, not aluminum or plastic mesh.
No issues here. Played about a dozen songs from Google music on full volume with no distortion. Surprised how full sounding the speaker is.

If it plays ring tones and basic YouTube audio I'm good. I never run it at full volume. When I listen to music it's over Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth connected Klipsch Gig speaker.

Audio coming out of the speakers on mine sound awful and that's at less than half volume. Apps have a crackle to them and you tube videos as well. Dunno if I should request replacement or not
My xl speaker sounds better than my old note 4and Nexus 5x. So much so, that it could substitute for a cheap Bluetooth speaker. Watching a video on 6p sounds better as it's stereo and has good treble, but in general the pixel is louder and much more fuller. It makes the 6p sound tinny.
The issue I was speaking about almost seems like the phone is struggling to load the audio in sync with any video or animations going on in a app. You would say it's not powerful enough to do anything other than be a phone. I've already called and requested a replacement phone, should be here early next week then I will have two XL's in hand to see if I'm fact it's the phones speaker or if it's a software issue.

I have noticed the same with YouTube. Probably software related as it does work well after a fresh reboot.

I'm not talking about crackle or noise. Just seemed to help with voice and video synchronization.

I haven't had any issues with crackling until 20 mins ago. Watching a YouTube video and about 5 seconds in it started. It was at max volume and now I have to reduce it 2 clicks down to go away. I'm going to call for a replacement tomorrow. Once it starts the speaker must be replaced.
No problems here. It's actually louder and clearer than the speakers on my 6P. Which already has a bad emmc chip after only 10 months. All I care about is notifications though and this phone plays them very loud. :good:
Mine is not experiencing this issue. I've tried the reproduction with the piano app you have mentioned and I do not hear static or poping noises. I will admit I wish the speaker was louder, but I believe this was by design, and does not represent a production quality issue.

I'm in the same boat as you. Did you get your replacement order in? My speaker just started cracking and when I contacted support through the phone they sent me a list of software fixes which of course didn't do squat.
