Screen fades to black/Flickering (Issue) - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere but i haven't found it. Has anyone had this issue where your phone turns on and it just fades to black? I've found a few people online have this problem. I had to send my phone back and just got a replacement yesterday. It seemed to work fine for a few hours. Then i went ahead and rooted it and the problem came back to this new model they sent me. I wonder if it's a DPI or motherboard issue when you root. I have read that it is a batter issue. Another person says it's the motherboard. And another even says it's the screen that need replacing.

Mothernoard and LCD. I'm guarantee this for You. I had the same problem with lcd, but it was broken. But i had almost the same symptoms mate. So, probably you'd buy a secondhand G3. Maybe ... I dunno right now how much will cost you a new mother board with the LCD. I'm really sorry mate ? ? Take care ??

Hey, I had a similar issue then I disassembled the device and checked the connectors, board and other components, then I procceded to only reassemble the device and it now works perfectly! I believe it was bad connection maybe caused by dropping (guilty lol)

Hi
finally I found the perfect solution for this issue,
No need to call LG company
No need to replace any part of your smartphone
No need to pay for anything
this is a software issue believe me or Not !! it's not about any piece of hardware ........... yeh it's look like a hardware issue but it's not
I have an LG G3 and I was have Exactly the same problem .
All what you have to do is :
* 1 Root your phone [ be careful in this step ] .
* 2 Install TWRP recovery mode
* 3 use TWRP recovery mode to install CloudyG3 2.5.
That's all and your smart phone will be look like LG G4 , fast, smooth, and New

I find this implausible. It is most certainly a hardware issue. Software cannot fix a physical hardware (overheating) problem, although it can manage power more efficiently.
What tests did you perform before and after in order to fix the problem on the device to which you refer?

If it's not software related then it is probably a ribbon cable/connector issue...which would help explain why people are seeing recurring failures after replacing LCD's and motherboards.
I followed this youtube video and it fixed my friend's flickering LCD...it took about 15 minutes total and cost $0... http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/help/lg-g3-screen-fading-flickering-fix-t3326092
If it doesn't work the 1st time you may have to add some thickness to whatever you put on top of the camera connector. I just used a rolled up label from work and stuck it on top of the camera connector, reassembled the phone, and it's been working fine for about 3 weeks now.
Good luck

Solution for fading and flickering
I found a Solution for the flickerinv issue, you don't have to put something between the cam connector and the case.
1. Open the phone
2. Remove Motherboard
3. Search for a hairdryer
4. Blow hot air on the whole Motherboard until it heats up and you can't touch it.
5. There's a chip which doesn't sit on the Motherboard correctly, heating up fix this.
I don't take any response for demaged Motherbard or so on.
Sry for grammatical mistakes, I'm a german guy. :*

I spent days of googling and there are only temporary solutions for this problem.
After testing my phone for 2 days in different conditions I realised that the screen is going crazy when the light is changing too much.
If you do a sensor calibration everything will go back to normal:
-enter in Hidden Menu (model dependent)
-select Device Test
-select MT
-OK to restart the device
-OK and do not touch the screen for few seconds
-go to Individual Items+Power (you must push power button when you select this item)
-select Sensor Test and take care to not block the proximity sensor when you make the selection
-you will be instructed to cover the sensor (usuallyy twice)
-go down to Backto the Main List
-select Normal Boot+power (again you must push the power button to make the selection)
The phone will be restarted and you will have a working phone (I have 8 days without any screen issue)

So, let me get this straight,
The problem with the G3's screen fading is a hardware issue related to the CPU/GPU. The fact that someone puts a paper on the camera connector and it works is due to the fact that the tension applied to the motherboard flexes it and it makes the BGA balls re-connect. The only way to fix it is to heat it up gradually ( I've used a professional Bosch Hot Air gun and some special paste ) and before reassebly, to put a metal plate with some thermal paste between the CPU and the metal case. This way the CPU won't overheat that bad, and it will be pressed into the motherboard, minimising the risk of this to reappear.
For any other questions contact me anytime.

Thank you for your instructions - surprisingly it worked. You missed a step - the menu should be ELT test after getting into hidden menu.

Did this and now have an insecure boot error, going to give a fresh kdz install a go

I followed the baking instructions and the phone seems to be working again. At 375F (solder melting point) for 7 minutes. Then I let it cool in the oven for 30 minutes before reassembling the phone. Seems to be working.

Maybe, Maybe not
I started messing around with the settings, and since my phone, right now, doesn't have service, I turned data off. Where the screen would eventually fade to black, and became unresponsive, It would darken a little bit, then snap back. I said hey, why don't I get a cpu app(I used setcpu). I lowered the speed to a little over 1900, made sure it was using ondemand(using noop), turned off automatic brightness(set it to 61%), and rebooted. So far no flickering, fade to black, unresponsive touchscreen, with no touch, installed greenify. I'm gonna let it charge, and see about the battery life(thank goodness I installed greenify). Yes the phone's rooted, and twrp is installed, and xposed is in, but never changed roms, just stock. When I get a carrier for it, and it does it again, then there maybe something there.

Hi all,
I had issues after I acedentilly fried mine using maps, spotify and wireless charging when driving with it in direct sunlight. I didn't realise until I nearly burnt myself picking it up. A few hours later it started flickering and fading off suggesting to is an issue either caused or effected by overheating.
Anyway i took it apart and baked the motherboard at 175C for 8 minutesminutes and it worked flawlessly for 3 weeks until it overheated agian. Did it at 200C for 9 minutes this time and its fine, see how it lasts and maybe get some thermal paste and make some adjustments to keep it cool

Galaxy 3 i5801 Digitizer Replacement Needed

dunno what happened, my samsung doesn't likes to respond on every touch.
Touch screen works sometimes, sometimes it refuses to do anything.
I disassembled the phone and even cleaned the LCD Digitizer from inside but still same issue.
Now only hope is to replace the digitizer but its not available in my town, can someone quote its price in India and which samsung service center to contact for it ?
I see many of them available on ebay.com but its hard to get it shipped to my small town.
I wanted to buy a new phone, but can't find a suitable one in budget which can offer features similar to Galaxy3 and ofcourse I would cry hard for not having kyrillos Rom :crying: on the new phone.
what did you guys decided on after Galaxy 3 (i5800)

Thanks Tanmoy, but I am 1000+ km away from mumbai, I've tried to repair it last night, and screen works fine but the two Soft keys are not working.
I've used hair dryer last night to remove any possible moisture near screen which made screen work but the back button just refuses to show life.
Have also asked local cellphone part supplier to check on digitizer and get me one if its available in aftermarket.
Now opening the damn phone again and lets see what happens.

Yups may be I over-cooked it using dryer.
the lights blink when I have a new SMS as its a feature of kyrillos 10x Rom already.
I clearly remember earlier back key used to automatically operate repeatedly even in home screen.
I've very less hope for it to work but lets see, also I discovered In i5801 the softkeys are integrated into Digitizer itself while in 5800 samsung had different small panel for those, in Indian version which is i5801 there's no physical contact between the base pcb for those soft keys and the digitizer so I am sure it not something with small internal connector as in 5800.
Please upload the files I'll give it a try and will do a full backup before flashing.

Thanks for info, They sell in bundle as they need to squeeze bigger bucks,
LCD is completely different part and can be replaced without the need to replace the digitizer and vice-versa but they would not do it.
I am trying to fix this phone, else I'll try to buy a new phone instead of paying 2200 for repair.
Edit: Tried zerofill and reflashed kyrillos 5-6 times, It stucks at boot animation, Got frustrated and Installed JB Ports (AOKP B1P1) to see if it boots up, and luckily it did on 1st attempt. looks cool, but one important thing "Camera" is not working for me.
Softkeys still DEAD
after flashing kyrillos did you try to wipe data/factory reset in the recovery .

u dont need to replace the lcd i , just the digitizer and it wont cost much from the local market as i purchased its lcd for only 750 inr.moreover i had seen a guy who was purchasing iphone 3gs digitizer ,it costed him 1000 inr so galaxy 3 digitizer would be even less than that i guess.

Thanks, for the info, My softkey use to stop working and I used to dry it up little bit and it worked then, but this time entire touch screen was unresponsive so I opened the complete phone and used hair dryer, it worked for few days then again stopped working and this time I extended the time and seems softkey got over-cooked
I'll try to find someone who can hunt it for me, I am 600 kms away from delhi and don't have plans to visit delhi anytime soon.
Camera doesn't work so my phone is serving for phone calls and mails.
The new Gmail app has a button to go back to inbox which is making it less painful for me to operate without the softkey back button.
Android 4.04 is certainly working cool on G3, apart from few bugs like camera.

What happens when you do a factory reset? Does it load into CWM?
you can access download mode so you can unbrick your phone
I think its not a hardware problem because you can see the lg logo
If you can access cwm menu , wipe user data and cash , then flash hono stock ics.
Then if the phone startup was successful check the hardware parts via hidden menu in stock roms.

Yes this is the exactly the issue i am facing day by day it gets worst. The whole thing started after flashing CM10 ROM. the small bsod you get leads slowly into this. Guys i took real good care of my phone it never fell down from my hand nor does it have a scratch on it. never over did the flashing part as well, my advice is stick with the stock ICS. My Nitro is game over i bough a new Samsung s3. just a word of advice dont over do your beta flashing. :crying:

happyneser how did u resolve the issue.
Please advice i tried every thing in the book and did not pull though.
You need to check the power IC, and make reballing
I was treated to the service (good repair workshop), they said that one of chips was soldered askew.
I think it one of this - Qualcomm PM8901, PM8058 and PM8?7? I do not know exactly.

you might want to retract this statement if this issue is caused by faulty soldering and not CM10

Dear Friend,
i believe i am still right the BSOD now a days Laptop are common mostly HP, its Due to the VGA chip being BGA(ball grid array) they are chips with small balls with soldering underneath them used for comm between the chip and the Bord. but went to chip overheats it melts the solder underneath and when it cools back down the solder get solid it a different area(we moving the phone like taking out of pocket or so) which causes lack of communication between chip and board(when they are back solid) it causes BSOD. I believe the Graphic chip in NITRO HD is using the BGA tech(It makes sense) so if our phone overheats too much the chances of De-aligning the solder in the chip is high cousin BSOD. We all know CM10 at the early stages caused overheating while in black screen coursing huge power drain in battery(we have stigmatic data with the help of battery analyst app).
So summer Nitro HD = BGA , CM10= overheating, Overheating=Bad for BGA(Causes BSOD) so overheating Nitro HD causes BSOD there u have it. i case if the phone really overheats while its in your pocket of in a uneven place and the solder goes out of place then you are in trouble like me.
Solution= Re balling or heat gun(temporary) Can FIX it.
So it's pm8028 near mdm9200
I got the same problem last weekend. I woke up and found the screen on and no sound from alarm clock. I checked and the phone got no sound at all.
I restarted the phone and got the gray screen. Late at the day the phone boot again but after another reboot it got the gray screen and never recovered.
I use CM10.1 and wind kernel with no overclock.
Too bad I didn't find any shop that reball the chips so my phone is dead
I got a i9305 today to replace it.
cn you fix the re-ball?

Make sure the phone is fully charged before you try to boot it up, if it is fading out after the logo splash screen it either sounds like a dead battery or a badly flashed rom. You can enter into recovery by holding the volume down and pressing and holding the power button till you get prompted to wipe the phone.
I have had a couple of grey screens (or "black" screens) which I was able to recover from, simply by making sure the phone was powered off, then fully charging the battery for 4 hours, then booting into recovery and flashing a different ROM

Overheating solution ! Worked for me.

Well almost all HTC desire devices have an overheating problem causing them to reboot every time we use them.
Well I tried something that actually worked!
You need to have the required skills in order to do this
You need :
1:a clean soft brush(tooth brush recommended)
2:Tools to disassemble the HTC desire
3isassembly manual
4:Electric contact cleaner
Procedure :
1: Disassembly your HTC desire and just unplug only the mainboard and the upper board (that includes the camera)
2: CAREFULLY open the metallic box located to the main board (the one that is under the display and has the CPU inside)
3: use the electric contact cleaner and spray everything inside that box
4: CAREFULLY use the tooth brush to clean it from inside by making soft movements !!
5: wait for 5 minutes for the electric contact cleaner dissapears
6: Do the same in the camera mainboard but don't open anyone metallic box , just from the top
7: Start assembling the HTC desire
8: Test it and write down if it worked
Note : a friend of mine told me that you don't have to open the metallic box that protects the CPU,just use the electric cleaner and be sure that you have sprayed everything ! And this guide is tested on 4 HTC desires with the same problem all of them 100% success !
WARNING: USE THIS GUIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK ! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY KIND OF DAMAGE!
I personally tested it as I said on 4 HTC desires and it worked !
Just test it and write it.I was looking for 1 year how to solve this problem and I believe I found the solution.

Hello,
This is the thread I was looking for since I got one HTC Desire with the message “repair it and take it, or throw it into trash”. Luckily for me, that was only few weeks ago, therefore I didn't suffered like other proud Desire owners.
I can power-on the phone but it will stuck on HTC logo or it will do reset loop (several times) finishing with 7 vibrations and HTC logo.
It was failing on RUU updates because of radio; then I decided to freeze phone (only device without battery, sd card and sim). After that, I was able to update the phone...freeze it again, s-off it...freeze it again...flash it with custom rom...freeze it....etc.
I was planning to apply some thermal compound inside and maybe cut some pieces for better airflow but Your solution seems great.
Is there any news about those 4 repaired phones? Are they still alive and performing well?
short update:
mine doesn't work after the procedure from first post.
however, it will still come alive (for the short time) after freezing. :/
Interesting post. is overheating a common problem on the desire?
My phone seems to crash every so often and sometimes gets really bad and doesnt wanna start up as mentioned above so am thinking whether its a overheating issue rather than software/hardware

When your phone doesn't want to boot, put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. If it then boots normally, it's an overheating issue.
approve - this works, btw if anyone have any another questions then ask

I have disassembled the phone. There is a metal box on the back of the main board (directly behind the
sim card and sd cards slots) though it appears to be completely sealed. I do not see how it could be opened
and/or how the contact cleaner can get in to do anything.
I am missing something ? Anyone ?
thanks and best regards

I did this last night, and same result... the phone keep restarting... its 100% a overheat problem cause here are +2°C and when i operate the phone outside , is working without any problem, but when im in the house at +25 the phone start acting weird...(restarting)...

sorry for double post but just want to add that something... the second time i opened the phone, ive put some thermal paste (processor paste ) on top of black cip's, but same result... the phone keep restarting... other ideas???
I tried this
and had no luck. I think it may be absolute tosh. we were promised photos of the procedure...
we are still waiting for them
Not working for me too... bad news problem not solved - we need new motherboard... i will sale the phone for spare parts....
When I read the titel of the postig i feel so lucky but as i read the rest of the postings...
The desire is such a great phone but the heat problem su**s.
Hope someone will find a sollution that works for all of us.

I totally disagree with your opinion to apply thermal compound and cut some pieces. Thermal compound works for pc and in case you apply this, think that the hot will still remain inside and maybe get worse. Also cutting pieces will result for your phone to fail, cause all this are made to protect all those that they include
other solution
For users that are EXPERIMENTAL ONLY! you can try this
Follow all the steps in post #1 but when you reach to the cpu chipset, use a heat gun for about 30 second with distance up to 10cm(maybe more).Do whatever is needed to be sure that heat will not touch the other chipsets. This solution have 40-60% Success- Failure. In case of failure, (I DONT HAVE RESPONSIBILITY!) the phone will be dead for ever. If you have free time and this phone for test then do it otherwise better not
Also i will try to find an HTC Desire to take screenshots ...

Ghost Touches on my Zenfone

Hello everyone,
Since yesterday i have been experiencing ghost touches on the top part of my screen., and it keeps increasing. I have not been able to find a solution uptil now.
I am prism barebone Rom (Stock). I was using google launcher, tried removing it, but not of much help.
I am not able to understand whether its a Software issue or a Hardware issue. Should i take this to Asus, i am already rooted, so wonder whether they would help or not.
if you got your device bootloader unlocked , your warranty void but i think there is some article how to getyour bootloader relocked but idk i havent got my device unlocked yet. but another story if you havent done anything to your device, just bring it to asus and get repaired

I am also a prism barebone user and I have the same ghost touch problem time to time. I started noticing this after I received my last update (165).
My bootloader is unlocked and there is no way to relock the bootloader (except flashing the dark splash screen to make it appears to be locked) as such I can not repair my device with warranty. I could do out of pocket repair though.
I did search on xda , internet and found so many postings without any proper solution except send it back to Asus repair service. (Asus changes the digitzer part)
Here is what I found.
1. The Ghost touch (it also called Phantom touch) started noticing around December 2015, after taking the last update. So it could be software related. Asus has aware of this problem and we are hoping that the next update would fix this problem.
2. Everybody who had their warranty repair said that the problem was fixed. So it could be hardware related.
- Some said that they download and flashed the latest firmware and it solved the problem.
- Some said that they replaced the ZenUI with Google launcher and it solved the problem.
Here is one I thought it is useful so I copied it to my note pad. I did not copied the name of the original writer so I don 't know who wrote it.
"For millions of ASUS Zenfone users having Ghosh Touch issue there are 2 temporary solutions you may try:
i) Slightly Bend your Zenfone towards front and back - this should instantly solve your ghost touch issue but only temporarily (be very cautious while bending your phone as excessive bending may damage your screen)
ii) Do Not Keep your mobile phone in the pockets of your trousers as it may again bend your phone and cause ghost touches
iii) Even if the ghost touch is fixed try running the SMMI Test (Touch screen Test - draw a big 'S' from top to bottom of the screen and repeat it from left to right side of the screen) frequently to find if it is really a hardware issue, while testing you may find sometimes the tests are passing while sometimes the tests are failing. If the Tests fails frequently please take it to local ASUS authorized service center immediately for a hardware fix, take screen shots of the tests before visiting the place. "
I used to have screen and phone cover. I took those off .
I no longer put the phone in my trouser pocket.
I did bend the phone sometime.
I am waiting for the next Asus update.

Hmm....i too looked it up and found that it could be software related.
So just for testing purposes, i have started using a custom rom. Uptil now i havent faced the ghosting issue. I will also try the methods you have listed.
I have a back cover that is pretty tight and a tempered glass. Will try removing those too.
Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Yes, i did check it. It was unticked.
BTW i am cm13 now, and havent noticed any of the ghost touches for some time.
But now they are back. I assume it is hardware related now. Going to take it to asus.

Need help!! LG G4(H815) not starting

Hi all,
so here is my problem.
Day before yesterday i had a perfectly working LG g4 H815 model with s/n 511 running on firmware v20h, when i decided to root it and install some mods.
so i flashed TWRP, installed xposed and xtrememusic mod. the phone booted normally after installing these. i didn't install any modules under xposed. the phone worked perfectly for two days. however today morning it hanged while taking photo with the camera app. when restarting it got stuck at LG logo for long time. My brother(who doesn't have any technical knowledge) pulled out the battery and restarted. Again it got stuck at LG logo. thinking somthing wrong he again repeated this only to find that it didn't power on at all this time. No LG logo no notofication light nothing.
Tried charging it(although battery was aroung 60-70%), pressing power button removing the battery. still nothing. the phone is not at all powering up.
However when i connect it with USB cable with laptop, laptop makes sound of getting usb connection detected. i took it to a service centre.
the technical guy there told that IC may have been faulty. he told me that motherboard needs to be replaced. however unofficially he may try heating the IC to get it booting.
What should i do now? Is the IC really fried. had the rooting and installing mod caused it?
Please help.
PS- the phone is imported and cannot be sent back for warranty purpose.
I think you are experiencing the dreaded LG G4 bootloop. I don't think rooting or modding caused a software problem. It "may" have caused a hardware problem simply because it generated enough heat to loosen the IC that little bit that initiates the problems you are describing. I rooted and installed the stock image in Nov 2015. Two weeks ago the phone froze - restarted and then could not be booted. LG sent me a Fedex label and I sent it off. Ten days later I received the same phone back. I assume they replaced the mainboard.
You should contact LG directly. I saw a class action suit that was called off because it appeared that LG will fix this particular problem (failed mainboard) out of warranty. Anyone please correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Hi thanks for the help.
But isn't the dreaded bootloop is that where the phone is stuck at the LG logo. Mine isn't booting at all. And the bootloop problem is due to big cores or such and not due to ic?
Mine wouldn't start at all - it bootlooped once for about a split second - then it was dead
Same is the problem with me. Bootlooped twice and then its completely dead. I have tried contacting Lg UK. Lets see what they say.
Ok so i got a reply from LG and they suggested me some steps to take (which are obviously not useful as it is completely dead). however they have also told me that they are willing to help me and asked me about details of purchase etc and "whether it was rooted".
so what should i reply rooted or not? will they detect it as it is dead.

Sorry to be late on reply. I advise to not answer question whether phone was rooted. Here is my reasoning:
1. This problem is widely occuring - only a tiny percentage of people root their phones therefore question is irrelevant.
2. The problem is known to be that an IC becomes loose most likely due to heat - a better question would be - do you place the phone on a hot dashboard with GPS running while you are charging?

thanks for the reply (although late). i have already sent the phone to LG replying as no root. Lets hope they repair it without any problems.
second i didnt do anything of anysort like placing on hot dashboard or such. one day while opening the camera app it decided to just hang and later on die on me.
I hope you didn't think I was saying you might have done something that would overheat your phone such as my second example. I was trying to come up with an example reason the IC loosens. Even if you did that the phone should survive such conditions. Let's hope the replacement motherboards somehow do better. My guess is that the soldering job is fine, the problem is probably bad design that doesn't "vent" the heat from chip.

so what do you suggest after repair should i keep it or sell it? Lg g4 is no doubt the best phone when considering the value for money. no phone even twice in price comes close in camera and screen quality especially. but the unreliability of this phone has made me to consider selling it as soon as i get it back.
I'd keep it if your new board is high serial

Well my old board was also high serial, beginning with 511
I'm going to take my chances - it's a great phone until it bootloops. I'm going to avoid scenarios best I can that could result in the phone heating up inside. That would be charging only if absolutely necessary while in my ProClip dash mount if the car is hot, using backup battery after depletion instead of charging more often etc. Thinking back I rarely put the phone into heat inducing situations - normal use results in the IC becoming loose at the 1 year mark. If mine bootloops exactly a year from now and LG fixes it again I'm an LG fan. If they blow me off no more LG.
I really regret not paying it off early and taking the $15/month deal for an S7 Edge last month
