Is it possible to make your own battery case? - Nexus 5 Accessories

I have been designing a case for my phone that I will get 3d printed and I was wondering if it is possible to make a battery case. I know I can buy a battery and put it in the case I design but how do I wire it up to be able to charge the phone (and using usb otg will I be able to use the usb port while the cvase is on/plugged in?) or is it even possible to just' wire it up' or do I need some kind of chip in the case to moderate the charging? The battery cases that most people buy have a switch on them for charging and using the usb port ( a limit of usb otg im guessing, even though i cant find anywhere where it says that otg has such a limit and I have seen people reporting that they can use a charger and usb with a adapter [I know it has to do with providing enough power to the device plugged into the port, if it is possible does this need to be regulated?], also I was going to use an adapter in the case so that I can add expandable storage via micro sd or usb, hence why I wanted to be able to use the port while having the phoner plugged into the case), to have a switch like that (or the reason why they do have a switch)will I need to have some kind of controller?
Atm I am modelling a case that is normal and then has a clip on part for the battery pack (and usb hub, which limits when expandable starage can be used). I'm also modelling a non-removable battery section case.
So to some it all up, is it possible to make your own battery case and if so how?
P.S. This took me so long to write I forgot half of what I was saying, so feel free to ask questions if I dont make any sense.

Maybe mount a portable charger to your case?

that's basically what I want to do but mounted the whole portable charger would be massively bulky and I don't want to buy a portable charger and take it apart because portable chargers are expensive (I might as well buy a professionally made portable charging case)

Well, manufactured battery cases are also bulky. There would not be a difference. Portable chargers are not expensive, as I bought mine from Marshalls for around $15. What's your idea of "expensive"?

About time... This seems to be extended battery compatible since the way it looks to sit in the dock is perfect. It wont interfere with the extended part as it doesnt sit deep into the dock and the extra battery charges the SAME time.
This looks like it might be the same brand that I used on my TP or TP2 that charged both the phone and extra battery with either USB or AC. If someone buys it, please report back if it does or not.
I might get it... 25 bucks tho ahh.
my brother's been lookin for this since day 1, I'll send it to him and see if he bites. If he gets it I'll post his review.
I was shocked when I realized that the one I purchased only charged either/or. Great post OP.

The description in the op's link says the usb is for charging the handset and if u wanted to charge the spare battery u need to plug in the ac. Seems like the same deal with those either or deals.

I personally have had this one for a few months now, I like it because I dont have to take off my case and it charges my backup battery's. The clear plastic thing is removable if you have a case on the phone. Once you remove the clear plastic thing there is no support for the phone. This has not been a problem for me. Still charges great!

EDIT :
It does have a indent about the thickness of 2 battery`s so it might not work with all cases, depending on thickness of case.

This is the one to get, and has been discussed on the forums here a few months back. if you search for EVO dock you'll find the thread, but those Hong Kong ones are junk, don't usually charge both even though they say they do, take weeks to arrive and oftentimes don't fit right. The one from nakedcellphone is a quality dock, shipping is fast and you can charge an extended in the extra slot.

In the eBay picture, it looks like the cradle has only one USB port, is that true? If so, it still won't charge the phone and/or battery when the computer is off, unless you unplug from the computer and plug it into the AC adapter.
I work for sprint and we have had one for about two months now lol. It charges your phone and a secondary battery, with a wall plug in or USB. They are 49.99
So this cradle charges both the phone and a spare battery from either one usb cable or ac adapter? I currently have a kidigi cradle which requires two cables and only charges phone thru usb which makes it think its plugged into a computer even when its not. This is slightly annoying as it always has to prep the SD card upon every unplug from the charger and sometimes messes up some of the sense widgets. Not sure why.

You could have it choose to go to charge automatically. Then it wouldnt do that.

Yeah I have the default connection type set to charge only, and "ask me" unchecked but all this does is not put the usb symbol in the notification bar. It still thinks its charging via usb because the widgets always refresh and it always preps sd card upon unplug. Is this what you were talking about or is there another setting I am missing? Thanks.

Does this have the magnet in it that allows the phone to automatically go into dock mode? We just went to Sprint/Evo 4g from VZW/Droid and my current dock charges both phone & battery w/o putting in USB mode plus allows for dock mode which I use to silent all tones so I can sleep. Now I need something that will function the same way as that one as inexpensively as possible. I'm reading that lots of the cheap ones don't have this so I want to make sure that this one does from people who have one and speak English. Thanks!

[Q] ac adapter with battery backup, two usb ports that plugs straight into the wall??

Anyone see anything like this? I thought I saw something like this once. What I'm looking for:
* plugs straight into the wall: doesn't rely on any extra cables, or micro/mini usb cords
* has *2* usb ports
* includes an internal battery that charges when your phone is charged so if you're away and you have this little box you have extra power
again: no extra cables (aside from a usb cable for your phone, but no charging via mini/micro, charges through the wall ac), battery backup, and 2 ports
Thanks for any input!
jack
Power Jack
You should be more things with you.
Or I could get a device that fits my needs (and exists) .
So the OP confused the hell out of me.

Lets cover the basics first. You essentially want an AC powered external battery for your phone, that has an additional 2 (full-size?) USB ports (assumedly just for power purposes - not as a data hub?).
However, you want it to charge your phone, but without cables, but with a USB cable...
FFFFFFUUUUUUUU!
So do you want a hardwired cable and then 2 spare ports? Or do you want 2 USB ports to be used with normal phone USB cables?
TO CHARGE THE BACKUP BATTERY: no extra cables, plugs straight into the wall, no charging via mini/micro usb charges through the wall ac
TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE: just use your usb cable (standard size, not for data) for your phone and plug it into the unit
So nothing like these:
http://tiny.cc/xj3ow
Hope that's more clear.
I saw someone using something like this once, but I can't find it online.
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Battery-Motorola-Samsung-powered/dp/B004FEMDXY
Getting closer. But the one I saw had two ports
So this then: http://www.puroitalianstyle.it/en/batteria-demergenza-2-porte-usb-emergency-battery-2-usb-ports
Pretty crappy capacity internal battery, but looks to be the best you can get.
Its not the same as I've seen, but its best I've seen online so far. I'll keep looking but I'll probably try and go for that one.
The benefit of these things is that you can charge your backup battery and phone at the same time and you only need one cable so no mix up with micro/mini cables. With those other batteries I always had to have two different cables (if my phone used micro) and then make sure I charged both.
Thanks!
Search for "Revolve Electronics xeMicro Hybrid USB Charger and Battery Backup with Emergency Squeeze Dynamo" and follow Amazon link. The internal battery is only 1,350maH on the unit but it looks like it meets your requirements. I'd post the Amazon link directly but being a new user on the forum, they won't let me.
Thanks pas,
I actually got this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Digipower-EBP...6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315323836&sr=1-6
PROS:
* no need to carry other cables (aside from a standard usb cable that you would use to charge a phone anyways)
* two ports
* flashlight (only useful if you dont have one--like me)
* plugs right into AC (don't have to plug some usb cable into a usb port to charge)
CONS:
* not high capacity (1700 mah I think)
Frankly, I don't think the last one is a big deal. I sold a (actually two) XP18000 with 18,000 mAh (yes that's thousand mAh) but it was too bulky and required extra cables. For 90% of users, you only need an extra battery if you didn't charge the night before, an emergency, or unusual heavy use. By the time your phone's battery and this one is dead you'll be next to an outlet where you can charge again. I have *never* needed more capacity, it might be nice, but the point for overkill isn't that far off from this battery.
That's a nice unit. I ordered a 6,600 maH battery pack (New Trent acd66) with dual usb ports the other day. It uses the same microUSB cable as my phones so I won't have to worry about carrying extra cables. Hope it works okay.
That one does look nice. The only reason I asked for an ac charging solution is that 1) usb-charging tends to charge slow (my old 12000 mAh wouldn't dare resort to a usb charging port) 2) it assumes you are next to a desktop. You are more likely to find an electrical outlet than a usb port. If you wanted to charge it so that you have a backup for your phone before a flight, say, you end stealing power from your laptop (unless your laptop happened to be at 100% and plugged in) just so that you have a backup for your phone. Of course you could bring a wall charger with usb ports, but that means you have to lug around something else.
It's not *that* big of a deal, the main reason I went with ac is because I kept forgetting to charge my phone at night, so I just plug it into this battery and if I happen to forget to charge it, the battery will be charged and I can charge it during my commute.
I'm pretty sure you can charge the acd66 using the same usb cable and wall charge plug that my HTC EVO uses. That's how I read the specs anyway. I had the same concern you have about not wanting to be limited to a PC usb port for charging it up. Hope I'm not disappointed when it shows up.
Not sure if this helps....

Take a look at this: Its at Seidio online and called the Multifunction battery charger. I am not allowed to post outside links since I'm new so I'm sorry I just could give you the link.
Good price and Seidio is a pretty good company. I've purchased items from them and been happy. Sometimes a little expensive on certain items but this is only $29. Might be worth looking into. Also take a look at Gorilla Gadgets, they may have something and they have excellent customer service and ship quick. Hope this helps and good luck.

But then you have to carry around the charger AND an extra battery AND you have to swap it out. I don't see the benefit unless you're planning on going through lots of batteries over a long period of time. But if that's the case, just go to ebay and buy tons of battery and associated charger either from Hong Kong (or even in the US). I could get 4 batteries and 2 chargers for for the price you're quoting:

That is what you're looking for isn't it?
ac adapter with replacement battery
I got this one: (see attached file!)
for my sgs2 along with a replacement battery. Only one USB port though!
Yeah I had some of those. BUt you end up carrying around extra batteries. I was looking for a external battery, not one you would have to turn of the phone and replace the battery with. But those work depending on your needs.
Have you found it yet???

Solar case for Xoom

I'm looking for the perfect Xoom case (for me).
I want a case that can house the Xoom, Motorola keyboard, Altec Lansing Sound Blade, and assorted small accessories such as a Mojo mini mouse, usb otg cable, stylus, card reader, etc. It can be hard or soft, and I don't want it to be larger than what I need for all those things.
BUT- I want it to have solar panels and a battery that will charge my Xoom & Droid.
I've found one for $600, but I'm not really quite THAT green!
Anyone have such a case? Chime in even if you have a charger (solar) that can fully charge the Xoom. I'm not opposed to buying a solar charger and somehow matting it with the bag.
Next choice would be a stand alone solar charger w/battery that is dimensionally close to the Xoom.
Thanks all.
Also looking at non-solar backup batteries. I would want one that is the same dimensions as the Xoom.
Question: What are the battery specs I'm looking for to fully charge the Xoom? Double what the Xoom's capacity is?
if you can do simple soldering and are proficient in modding you could make a pelican case to suit your needs. pelicans are also water proof. (do not work for pelican, i promise) they come with foam liners you can cut to suit individual items.
i turned one into an all in one 12v powered, ipod, wireless remote system with a headphone jack to plug into a amp on my dinghy so i could use my ijet wireless commander without getting everything wet, and keeping ipod and separate phone and wireless unit powered and charged. was pretty cool cause when i went out in the dinghy all i had to do was plug this box into cig lighter and haedphone jack on amp, and i had a water proof stereo, with wireless remote so i never had to touch ipod. or risk getting wet. ive since dissassembled the setup but i can show you pics of how the pick and pull foam in the box is easy to deal with.
not sure if i can post links, but here is waht i suggest, or something similar
http://www.pelican.com/1075/index.html
also solar panels are not that efficient, the solar panel will be more of a gimmick than anything else, especially if you are charging extra batterys as well, unless you make a mini foldout array, and now it is just getting complicated and unecessary. lithium packs are light, if you look on google you can find slim lithium packs to make a spare external pack, keep in mind you will need to keep the pack at 12v since thats what the xoom charges with. also its important to remember that the xoom uses 12v at 1.5 amp. by comparison thats almost equal to the output of 5 standard apple wall chargers, thats why our xooms charge so quick.. solar panels put out around 7w per square foot at 12v for the affordable panels that you see on peoples roofs, you would need a 4 square foot solar panel to meet the charging requirements of the xoom. so it would just be easier to integrate a beefy lithium pack that you can plug directly into the xoom. a properly sized pack could charge a xoom at least twice without weighing you down too much. of course you need to make sure you have the proper protections in place so you dont over or undercharge the external pack, packs can blow if treated incorrectly as we all know.
sorry about the ramble, sometimes i get carried away.
Thanks for all the input, bundles.
I am a good fabricator, so I may actually adapt something similar to the pelican, fitting it with a solar panel and LiIon battery pack. I know I can't run or charge directly off the solar cell, but the cell can take all day to charge the power pack; -That doesn't matter. Fitting the case together with all the components doesn't bother me, and I solder well (used to be a jeweler). But setting up several batteries in parallel or series, etc, I'm less confident about. Don't wanna burn the Xoom, and I don't wanna start one of those pretty green flamers like the old laptop batteries sometimes did!
I was also hoping to find something that allowed for several different currents/voltages so I could also charge the wife's iPad, our cameras, Droids, etc.
So it looks like the Energizer XP18000 is what I'll get for realtime practical functionality that meets my criterion, but I might make a separate solar cell unit to charge it with in the future.
the one other thing i forgot to mention is leaving a bag out in the sun will get very hot, i wouldnt want to cook my xoom in a solar powered oven of death. when you want to use it, it may be too hot.
If looking for solar / power up combo (costs a bit, but panels are amazing, I have the Adventure 10) ... check GoalZero products.

That links to their power kit list.

wireless charging solution thread

As we all know, the new Zenfone 2 is missing wireless charging capabilities, however there are multiple solutions to enable wireless charging on basically any phone.
Example is http://www.amazon.com/BEZALELĀ®-Wire..._1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1432149451&sr=1-4
It is a cover with a Qi receiver built in, which connects to the charging port and it also provides an independent micro usb port as a part of the case.
The absence of wireless charging in Zenfone 2 is a deal breaker for me ( don't judge) and as soon as an appropriate case is available, I'll get it and the phone as well.
Please post your findings here.
Would love to use wireless charging but using a cover like the one posted is out of question.
I love the slim form and feel of this phone. so i will have to live without QI and other solutions.
This will occupy the mUSB port but would probably be the best current solution.

Not sure if I'm going to stick with the ZF2, so I haven't gone out and done all that yet but qi adapters are pretty cheap now for both home and car. How effective some of the car ones are though are another story. iOttie has two models out now that look promising for the car.
There may also be the possibility of placing those adapters into a separate case just meant for wireless charging... remove the case if you need the mUSB port.]
Or... if they do release new back covers... get one that you install the qi adapter in and then one that you won't have the qi adapter in.

Here's a teardown: http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/asus-zenfone-2-teardown/
You could solder the DigiYes posted earlier (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HI8JYFE) onto the usb board. Or you could probably just jam the wires into the connector for a non-permanent solution. The pictures of the DigiYes are a little conflicting, but if it does have leads for the data pins, you'd be best off omitting them (you'll be limited to 500ma qi charging).
This is of course assuming there's enough space to wedge the DigiYes between the back cover and phone.

Which goes back to my point. Why did Asus purposdely omit to include QI/wireless charging pins on the back? It would had cost them hardly anything extra at all, and users could just have changed back cover to get wireless charging...
That one http://www.amazon.com/BLUBOON-Unive...2630&sr=8-2&keywords=qi+wireless+charger+1000 is 1000mA, if it does make a difference. But a case integrated receiver would be much better solution, if ever.

I bought that model. I have a Qi charger (used with a Nexus 5) hooked up to a 2A USB Adapter, and it barely charges the Zenfone. I do not recommend. Maybe a 2A receiver would work better.
It's ridiculous.... why did asus decide not to offer a wireless charging solution similar to the previous samsung galaxies/lg.
Have the pins for charging on the back, and let the user change the case to a qi receiver case or add a qi receiver pad inside. this is honestly the only thing that disappoints on this phone (((((((((((((

Thanks for trying. Did you actually solder or just plug it in the usb port? If you plugged it in the usb port, does the cover close without damaging the cable?
I'm asking because if that works, we could potentially design a slightly thicker but hollow back case that could hold NFC and the wireless receive without unnatural bulges.

Yeah I judge, wireless charging its just another feature. A small battery, a slow processor or low memory now that's a real deal-breaker since your phone wont last a day, apps will run like hell and you will always have to micromanage just for things to run properly.
I'm way more pissed off at this phone not having a removable battery, not just because its a real deal-breaker during travel where I will be forced to lug around one of those brickish power banks but because Li-ION batteries have the lifespan of a mosquito. I already had 2 phones like that and the result was always a massive pain in the ass to deal with.
I rather buy a case with an extra battery than this thing

I have a qi charger built into my car. I do not like aftermarket charger added to the phone. So this is a deal breaker for me and will not consider any phones without buildin qi charger.
Looking to buy this phone and own a quick charging card like this. Is it possible to slip the card under the back cover (without a case) or will it cause it to bulge in too unsightly a manner?

It closes fine but there is a bulge and the cover is left slightly open.
Here's my solution. Doesn't look good but functional.

It can but causes a gap near the usb port that I could not close. I would've run it inside if it didn't do that.

Great Idea.
The speed of charge is 350 MAH ?? Is to slowly (USB PC charge normally 550 MAH)

No Hassle DIY Wireless Charging

Hi,
After going through all possible options of connecting a wireless receiver to a magnetic charging port, and having no luck, I come up with something even more simpler.
Any soldering was not an option, as I wanted to keep my phone waterproof when I need it.
So I got these three things:
- Case. I was looking for something slim, preferably with covered magnetic port, since I'm not going to use it anymore. (this case I bought from aliexpress)
- MicroSD cover, didn't wanna ruin original. Cover has to be there, without it microsd will get lost.
- Wireless receiver itself. Any should do, but the longer is the cable the better.
After being using it for a month, even magnetic charging now feels like too time consuming to me )
Here's how it looks.
You cut the cover of the USB port and sd card slot? How could it be waterproof anymore?

That's why I got a spare one, so I can replace it when I need it.

Huh ? How so ?
It's only 800mA charging current on your wireless charger...that's like half of the original charger used with a magnetic cable(1.5A)
I see. I meant that it takes time, especially at night, to to align magnetic connector. As far as charging time, it takes about 4hrs.
I like this a lot. Thanks for posting. Where did you get the spare cover?
For me this would be most useful in the car. I'd still like to use the magnetic dock on my desk so now I'm off to find a dock-friendly case.
Do you have links to the stuff you bought for that?
How did you create such a small micro usb connector?
