Faulty head unit? - MTCB Android Head Units Q&A

Hi,
I think my Xtrons TD696A may be faulty.
The SD card keeps unmounting and saying unexpectedly removed. Then somtimes remounting again. And will keep doing this.
I have tried Kingston and Samsung cards 16 GB and 32 GB.
Also tonight when I was changing the card I couldn't get it to click into place.
Eventually it did but then wouldn't again, like its faulty inside possibly
I am on Malalysk firmware. And have tried factory resets too.
Any advice. Do I need to format the SD card in a certain way other than FAt 32, does allocation size or anything else matter?
I may have to try and return the unit to stock before I send it back if that is possible. Only problem is seller is in Italy. Im in UK, so really didn't want to return it!
Thanks

there was a post or thread where someone had taken a photo of a bad connection between the sd card slot and the wires soldered to it.
Can anyone help me find this?!
Thanks

Or is there a general guide to opening the case and accessing the front SD card reader?
Help please lol

You might try putting the sdcard in your pc and formatting it to exFAT. Then put it in the head unit and have android format it. I had to do this myself.

thanks, i tried that after seeing it suggested here, unfortunately it didnt work for me.
Really think its a hardware issue as sometimes by pushing the area around the card slot, it will mount/unmount etc

Well I took the front off (warranty probably already void due to installing custom ROM and rooting anyway!)
But couldnt get the PCB out of the front screen case, might have been glued in or something and didn't want to force it.
Coulndt see any obvious solder breaks.
Managed to wedge in a bit of paper to see if it possibly might put a bit more pressure on the sd card contacts, but doubt it will do anything.
We'll see when I get it back in the car
Thinking I can probably do without an SD card reader anyway really...

Seller is advising to only use class 4 cards, im 99.9% sure that isn't the issue though!

'Dead' 16GB SD card?

Hi all,
Happily listening to music with Core Player on the TP2 I received last Saturday and the phone lit up with a message from Core Player that it wanted to update my media library, following the removal of the SD Card.
Suffice to say, I was confused: no chance with the SD card hidden under the battery cover that it could have been loose and fallen out but checking through File Manager on the phone, the SD card can't be seen at all.
Put said card into an adapter and then card reader on my PC; it comes up to suggest there is no card inserted: put the same card via adapter into my digital camera and the camera refuses to even turn on with the card in.
It's a duff card I'm sure - bit peeved since it wasn't that old but meh: don't trust all eBay sellers selling 'genuine' SanDisk products I guess - however, whilst I await the arrival of a new one, could it be my TP2 that has damaged the card in some way? Has anyone else noted problems with the TP2 and higher capacity SD cards?
FlashROM based cards only have a certain number of writes. Same goes for SSDs. They should have a way to track number of writes to cards. I've had official Sandisk cards go bad on me within the first year too. Don't forget that static shocks from your clothes can actually damage the card. Also don't forget that your phone can corrupt your data if it's in the middle of a read/write op and you remove the card.

Thanks for your thoughts mate: it wasn't removed from the phone and the phone only had CorePlayer running on it at the time - so I don't think it was anything I'd done
I think I got duped by someone on eBay selling a 'Geninue' Sandisk card that perhaps wasn't - I've read here than Danetec are also quite good so I've ordered one of them directly: fingers crossed I have more luck with my second one!
I was more concerned with it possibly being my phone - I read a month or so back on the Diamond2 forum that 16GB cards didn't work so well with that phone and wondered if any forumites here had noted any issues with the TP2 and certain SD cards, thats all...
it happened to me last weekend, due to an automatic update of go news touch which went wrong.
no way to see or format the card on the ppc or my netbook. I had to go back home, put it into a usb adaptor, and finally format it with mu desktop pc. my little cer netbook couldn't detect it, and locked up each time I tried formatting it, even from cmd console. but on desktop with adaptor it went just fine.
hope you'll be able to resolve - my sandisk card was 20 days old, 65€ worth, and having it toasted isn't something I would wish to anyone

In this case, it's not even recognised - via a card reader, active sync or inside another device: this one I think is lost Meh, it's only money
Hi All
Paulplex, don't feel you are alone, this happened to me too with a genuine Sandisk 16gb card. It worked last thing at night, went to access it in the morning and it was dead - just 3 months old with no issues at all up to that point.
The solution was replace it as it would not recognise via a reader in the pc either - completely useless....
The cause? Who knows, i do suspect the TP 2 though as i had no issue with it on my old Dopod 838 pro for the first 2 months since new.
Cheers

Strange SD Card problem

I had a strange problem happen to my SD Card on my SG3. I have a Patriot 16GB class 10 card that I used on my EVO 4G for a almost 2 year without a problem. After when I got my new phone I clean all folders that I no longer needed except my pictures and some applications. Put the card in my SG3 and everything was OK. I was able to copy files take a pictures and everything seems to work the way it should. Last week I was on a trip and during the process to taking a picture I got a message that my card was removed and basically disappear. I reboot the phone and nothing happen. then a little bit later I saw another message that card was found and everything show up again. Then I check do I have all the pictures and most of them were there except on a last one was (when card disappear) basically it was look like that picture was taken a half way. So I delete that bad picture and continue. A day later it happen again but this time when card show up again instead a normal card I have that message in notification bar with a little sd card that it says Blank SD card. then if I pull down and click on it phone is asking me to format the card. I try to mount the card but got the same message Blank card or unsupported file system. Ok so I didn't have at that time my adapter to plug in to my laptop and wait until I got home to try to repair the card.
Here is what I got now and I'm not sure is phone damage the card or card slot on the phone is not good.
I use minitool under windows and GParted as well under linux. Both of them recognize my card as 60 GB Unallocated space (it is a 16GB). when I try to recreate or format both of them said successful but card is not show up. I have to plug it back and then it goes again as a 60GB unallocated space.
Does any one know how to format a 16GB card as FAT32? I mean the settings I have to use to put to get back again this card as a 16GB not as 60GB.
Sorry for the long explanation and thanks for you help in advance.
P.S. I' not rooted and on LG8 update.
Bro,did to trid any other sd?

Windows will format it just fine under Disk Management. The fact that its reading it as a 60GB... I'd bet on the card as bad. I have hours and hours trying to save thumb drives and SD cards. 97% of them had no hope. Sometimes the card reader can act up... but not likely, and the phone's kicking it out too. Try to stick with Kingston or SanDisk even if you have to pay a little more. Yes, Cards do go bad like that.

Thanks for the reply. It is look like that this card is going bad. It kind a surprise me since I didn't have any problems under my old phone. I will play a little bit more to try to repair it but....... looks like will be a lost a time.
Do you think that because it was a class 10 card causing a issue? I saw a couple treads but most of the SD card that people use are class 4.

Probably 1.5 year. I got my EVO 4G back in sept. 2010 and bought the card a couple months later when rooted my phone.
Yeah, like root said, the class wasn't the issue. The different phone might have pissed it off but you really never know. I never liked Patriot myself, but then some people like them. Gotta back stuff up or have it auto upload somewhere.

I do have all the pictures auto uploaded to my DropBox account and all apps I backup on my PC. I just wondering if the card slot of the phone is bad. I have a new 4GB class 4 card. I will put in to the phone, format and try to see if it happen again.
last week suddenly received a message that the card was blank. did everything i could not to format it. finally gave in and tried formatting the sd card but couldn't. had to buy a new one. sounds like yours is going bad as well.

When I first got my SGS3 I used my old card from my OG Droid. I got an OTA update and my phone quit working (I got the "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped working" message). I took the phone back and they asked if I had ever had an SD card in it. I said "Yes, my old card from my Droid." I was told that this is a "known issue" with the SGS3 and that any SD card I used should be formatted in the phone itself. I'm not sure if this is the issue here, but it might be.

[Q] Sd Card Not Working

Ok i have searched the the forum and none seem to directly apply to my issue so ill post this and hope its not a repost. I have the 2014 edition and i picked up my tablet off the table yesterday and noticed some icons greyed out. I went into settings/storage and noticed the sd was not mounted which was odd so i clicked mount and nothing happened and i realized it said insert sd. I took the card out and put the card from my phone in and it didnt recognize that one either. I put the card from the tablet in my phone and it worked instantly. I have formatted the tablet installed the stock rom, installed cleanrom. Nothing seems to work. Obviously my warranty is void and as i can find no apparent way to untrip the knox counter (go to hell samsung with that stupid efuse crap) anyone have any other ideas to repair this thing. It has no been dropped or anything that i can recall nor water or anything of that nature it just decide to stop working i imagine. thanks in advance.

I have had three (name brand) go bad in the last 10 months or so. I now always get the replacement warranty with each one. The last one just before I got the Note was the first replaced by the warranty. Well worth the 4.99 for a year of replacement.

There are other postings in the G-Note 2014 section that have reported the same issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2678229
In almost all the cases it is NOT the tablet but the card.
Even if the card works in a phone but not your tablet does not mean that your tablet is defective.
I have a few questions for you that will help us to help you.
What brand is the card?
What class is the card?
Did you purchase it from a local retailer or Ebay?
Was it sold to you bulk or in a genuine retail package?
How old is the card?
What file system is the card formatted as?
Have you tried another card in your tablet?
.

I see...... You made this determination just because it works in your phone and not in the tablet or do you have a second SD card that you tested in the tablet and it did not work as well?

Actually i tested 3 different sd cards in a 32 gb an 8gb and a 2gb none of them worked but all worked in my samsung galaxy s3 and in my card reader in my laptop which says to me that it is the tablet itself not the sd cards
Just something I would do is flash stock rom with Odin and start over and see if that helps if you can't return it.Do you have jellybean or kit kat on it? I saw with a post so where and they were saying kit kat won't read the external ad cards.

[Q] HTC One M8 SD Card randomly unmounts

My apologies if this has been covered, but I did a search and couldn't find the exact issue. Since the first day I bought the HTC One M8 9-10 months ago, the Micro SD card will randomly unmount itself. The only solution I have is to pop it out and pop it back in, then the phone seems to recognize it. Then 10 minutes later, it might give me an error again and say "SD Card unexpectedly removed."
I called tech support awhile back and they hadn't heard of the issue, only solution they could suggest was to wipe the phone and re-install everything. I'd like to avoid that of course.
Any ideas? Card is a Kensington 16GB.

Hi I would check to see if the card is genuine also format the card in the phone. Don't forget to backup data first
Try another card, otherwise the SD tray itself may be broken.
I know on past HTC devices, some folks had trouble with the SIM not making proper contact. A piece of tape (on the non-contact side) helped thicken the SIM to make better contact. Not sure if something like this will help here. Of course be careful, as you don't want loose tape getting jammed up in the slot.

Micro SD Card corrupted? [write protected]

Hi folks of XDA! I am in a bit of a pickle right now with my micro SD card that I purchased a while back from ADATA.
Long story short, I purchased a 64GB micro SD card from ADATA due to my needs of a little more storage than what this phone offered. I ended up using the micro SD card as adoptable storage as I wanted to be able to use both my internal and micro SD card for 'everything'. It worked great until the night before I was suppose to go on a cruise: music wasn't being downloaded as it said it had insufficient storage space, and I couldn't take pictures with the camera app because it couldn't find the storage. I got frustrated as it was showing I had over half of the storage available on my SD card and I just did not have time to meddle with this problem; it was late at night and I simply needed my phone for taking pictures & videos & music.
I ended up doing a 'no no' and ripped the micro SD card out of my HTC One M9 without formatting or anything (literally just popped it out of my phone), restarted the phone, and surprisingly nothing was corrupted; everything on my phone was still working. But not surprisingly, the micro SD card got a little weird where when I put it back into my phone, it did not recognize it and my phone wanted me to format the micro SD card. Fair enough. I did that and it said it could not be formatted ("Volume partition disk: 179,32 public' failed..."). Fair enough.
I went onto my Windows 10 PC, slotted my micro SD card into the adapter that it came with, slid the little notch away from the 'lock' on the adapter, and my computer says it needs formatting. I try formatting it but all it keeps saying is that it's 'write protected'.
I slid the notch on the adapter to the lock, and away, as well as kept it in the middle; nothing helped, it kept saying it was write protected no matter which part it was on.
I tried using scotch tape to cover it as some people on the internet found it to work when their slid mechanism broke. Still did not work.
Tried using another adapter, and it still said it's write protected.
Resorted to using the DiskPart technique via CMD; everything shows up, the micro SD card status is online and disk 1, 58GB, 0 free space.
Tried going further into the steps (i.e. "attribute disk clear readonly" & another way, "select partition"), and it says it could not be recognized due to fatal error of hardware.
Would anyone happen to be in this situation before and was able to get their micro SD card fixed or knows a fix for me? I'll be happy to give you more in-depth detail if needed. Thank you!
Moomoomania
Did you figure it out? I've had similar issue. I had to insert and remove multiple times until my PC recognized it... I think when I booked to Linux it worked though.
That sounds to me like the SD card is toast. I think it's built into the cards themselves that if the controller is going, it goes into read-only mode so that you can get your data off of it. I had an SD card bite it the first day I owned it a few years ago in a camera. I would use either a Linux VirtualBox or Linux Live Disc to copy your data to your computer and buy a new card.

Unfortunately I still haven't figured out how to fix my micro SD card; it's just sitting on my desk collecting dust and sadness. I'll update this thread if I happen to fix it!
Also, "booked to Linux"?

Fortunately everything important like photos were already backed up into the cloud and my micro SD card has life time warranty so I guess I'll have to end up using it. AHHH cost of shipping & time from my impatience with removing the micro SD card. My hunch is that the encryption that occurred when I used the micro SD card as an adoptable storage may have ultimately screwed it up... ://
If anyone have any clues to how to fix the problem or would like me to try things with it, feel free to post a reply

I've tried using Linux but it's not working.
I'm having Two SD-cards collecting the dust as yours .
Please reply if you find any solution for revering those adoptable sd-cards back to working.
Thank U....
The nature of solid state memory is that any errors causes a complete failure. You will never recover the sd card. Return it to the manufacturer for a replacement.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply (school exams) but mine is still collecting dust and will be probably forever. For the price that I've paid (~$30), it's not worth to replace and it's better if I just purchased a new SD card. Time + effort to get a new one is far too great for me to care about getting a replacement.

Oh I see. Fortunately for me right now, I am not using a custom ROM. I've been sticking to stock HTC and will proceed to do so until HTC stops giving out updates. I am not quite sure what you could do except try to manage with the 32GB like me by deleting all unnecessary apps, putting all your photos and videos into Google photo, and caching music that you find yourself listening to the most these days. So far it has been working well for me to the point where I don't find it necessary to have an SD card anymore! Perhaps it's a different case for you.
