Wireless Charging Issue Update 13B - Verizon LG G4

Anyone else having issues with wireless charging since the 13B update? I do not if it is just coincidence or not but both my wife's and my G4 refuse to charge through wireless. This problem seemed to begin after both phone's were updated to 13B. The light on the charging pads does not even come on. In the case of my G4, I have actually wiped the phone after the 13B update and still encounter the issue.

You should check to make sure it's not that the sticker on the back has stopped making contact with the wireless charging pads... All of mine have consistently stopped working after awhile because of that, however, if I take the sticker off and press it to the contacts physically it still works.
Although after fighting it for weeks I've given up on wireless charging for this phone.

Hardware issue is a possibility but, I have two LG G4's here that both stopped working at the same time. I experience the issue on multiple charging pads also. This was right after both phone were updated to 13b.

I'm on 13b and my wireless charging works as well as it ever did, which isn't spectacular. I'd say 1/10 times I wake up and its not charged. I even bought the official flip cover case with qi as I originally blamed my sticker back application skills.... but both work equally crappily....

Wireless charging on my 13B is rock solid. FWIW this is the wireless charger I use: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Yoot...9605910&sr=8-3&keywords=lg+g4+yootech+charger
As long as I ensure that it is steady green on the charging light by properly aligning the phone to the pad, I have never had an issue with it not charging properly.

I am not sure why I am still having issues. I did a battery pull on both phone and they started charging. But now half the time neither phone charges or I will wake up with the phone only partially charged. I just find it really hard to believe that both phones are having issues with two different chargers at the same time and that it happened right after I updated to 13b.
This is the charger I am using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JA7HNZO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

OK stupid question but does it charge regularly? Maybe you have battery issues.

If I plug either phone in using the same cable that goes to the charging pad I have no issues.

Thats what I figured, but had to ask. Have you tried charging it with the phone off? Could be the new software requires a greater amperage than before so charging with the phone on could cause issues. I know your charger comes with its own USB cable but what about the actual wall wort? Are you using the standard LG wort? Im just drawing at straws, but hopefully something gets your issue fixed. Other than that I guess at this point, since you already tried different chargers you could see if replacing the Qi sticker in the phone has any effect.

The LG G4 doesn't support wireless charging unless the NFC sticker on the back cover is changed out for one that is NFC/Qi charging capable. Look at the NFC sticker on the inside of the back cover. If it only has one section of the sticker with two metal pads, then it's only NFC capable. There should be two sections / arms with two metal pads on the sticker. one for NFC and the other for wireless charging. You can buy a new pad online for $10. My Verizon LG G4 didn't come with the wireless sticker , only the NFC one. See the picture for details of the NFC/Wireless charging sticker. :good:

I bought a new sticker that had both NFC and QI, and it was charging without a problem for a couple months. Now mine does not work at all and my wife's G4 only works sometimes.

Q I charging problem

I picked up an lg QI dock and tryed to let the g3 charge off it. Would not work. So found out that the us versions of the g3 do not have the correct back to work on qi dock charging. bought a replacement cover and then tryed to use dock.
the phone would go into charge mode for a few seconds and then stop charging. tryed moving the phone in differant positions and still no charge. then one night the phone charged, but it is intermitant. Is there something Im doing wrong?
thanks
The original back cover should of worked right out the box, I think the wireless charger is defective you have, try another one.

Qi chargers vary in signal strength and have an effective "transmission range" that is dependent on how thick the case of the transmitter is and how thick your phone's case is, if you have one on it. If you have a case on the phone try taking it out before you charge to see if that helps. Otherwise you may need to look for a "stronger" charger (they should have "transmission distance" or "charging distance" listed and anything 5mm or less is useless in my experience).

[Q] Wireless Charging and LG G3

Hello guys, I've been doing some searching around and I can't seem to get wireless charging to work on my LG G3.
I recently purchased a NFC/Qi sticker and successfully replaced the old NFC-only sticker on my backplate. I have checked and made sure the NFC/Qi pins and the terminals on the pad make contact.
I have also purchased a CHOE Stadium Qi Charger, which was very highly praised around these parts.
My issue is - wireless charging is very unreliable. I place the LG G3 on the charging pad, and it does charge for approximately 5 seconds before turning off, and then charging for 5 seconds again, then turning off. It repeats this cycle indefinitely.
I have tried restoring back to a stock KitKat image and see if the Lollipop update was causing issues, but the same issue persists. I've used both stock Lollipop ROM and the BlissPop ROM to no avail.
Anyone here have any ideas as to how I can solve this?
Make sure that the power supply you are using is putting out enough amp. I have one of these cheap ones here that does exactly the same thing. Using a good psu it works fine. Plugging it into my PC sometimes work and other times it just goes hair wire.

I've used the charger that came with the LG G3 (1.8 amp) and a 2.4 amp charger. Still doesn't seem to help.

which wireless sticker did you go with? did you need to add the padding to get the correct connection?
Mine did this after 2 days. A couple of us talked about it in the other thread. No solution was found. I asked for a refund and an waiting for another from a different company

Hmm...
This happened to me with a case which had the nfc/qi sticker on the back (from amazon). The wireless charging worked for a few days then stopped. The case was a yootech quick circle case from amazon. Not to speak poorly of them... Their customer service is excellent, and they shipped me out another one. But amazingly... The second case had the same issue. Most reviews on amazon were 5 star so I seemed to be in the minority.
If this happened to you, did you eventually find a sticker/case that worked (longer than a few days)?
Also, what specific model do you have? Mine is VS986 (Verizon). Gray plastic back, from best buy...

Mine is 815 I'm using here in the states. I have ordered a different one, but shipping is taking forever. All the other stickers appeared to be the same as far as I could tell. So, no, I haven't found one yet; but hopefully in a week.
I have this problem, too. Weird thing is, I have also bought those stickers, but I don't think that is the problem. I also have the original LG circle case with the built-in wireless charging, and that stopped working, too?!
I had this issue a while back when the stickers first came out, so I bought another from a different manufacturer, but it had the same problem. I bought an official LG quick circle and it didn't work either. It was the phone not working, but the sticker or case. I had to send the phone back. Lucky for me they refunded me after a month of owning the phone. i was getting sick of the bugs and lack of root anyways. But now im stuck with 2 stickers, 4 cases/bumpers and an extra battery lol. Oh well.
Anyways, point was the phone is faulty. RMA time if you really want wireless charging like I did.
Thank you for the info frigidazzi , I was afraid that it was a problem with the phone, and not the stickers or cover. I guess I will have to send it back then... Bummer...
Same experience
I have the Verizon LG G4 running stock with no launcher. I purchased the New wisdom qi sticker from Amazon and after installing it had no issues charging wirelessly on my Tylty charger. After several days, my phone stopped charging, and no longer recognizes the charger when placing the phone on it. I assumed that the sticker had an issue, so I ordered a new one, but after installing it the phone still will not start charging.
The Tytly charger does recognize the phone when placed on it, but the phone does not recognize the charger. This has been driving me nuts since it was working fine for several days and now nothing. I also have a qi charger in my car and experienced the exact same thing.
guys, it's a hardware failure by the looks of it, please read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62403976&postcount=9
Ugh, say it isn't so
That is probably the worst possible news, but thanks for sharing. Has anyone had any luck returning their phone under the one year warranty to get this fixed?
I also installed a Qi Sticker on my LG G4, at the beginning. I was having a lot of trouble, I even added a little bit of padding for the connections but when I tried to charge the phone it would always disconnect.
The solution was very silly, apparently the dock station requires an adaptor of 1800mA (or above) to work properly and my adaptor was for 1500mA, and now it works perfectly.
So yeah, check all the connections and the current values for the devices.
btw. Also check that the two conntact pins for the wireless charging sticker are springy.

I just checked the specs on the TYLT VU charger and the input voltage is 12v/750mA which is quite a bit lower than the charger you are using. Even if I could find another wall adapter that would fit into the VU, I would be leery of doing so since that would be more than double the voltage for which it is rated for and I don't want to trash my $60 charger. I also used this same charger with my LG G3 for over a year with no issues at all. As I stated earlier in my post, my G4 was charging fine for several days and then stopped suddenly (others reported similar issues as well). Lawrence750 mentioned this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...76&postcount=9 which seems to indicate this is related to the phone itself (hardware failure). Until someone is able to send their phone in to LG for repair and then receive it back with the problem solved, I don't think we will really know for sure what is causing this issue.
I had an issue where the phone also stopped charging wirelessly. I verified the charging array was good and that the phone was seeing it properly. The phone would act like it was going to charge for about 15 seconds then stop. I figured the array had moved a bit and wasn't touching the pins consistently. I placed a piece of scotch tape doubled over under the pin pad and still no joy. come to find out that the spare battery LG sent me was the culprit. Swapped the battery and it worked like a charm. Both batteries charged correctly when plugged in. Not sure why the newer battery had an issue.
I've experienced a problem with my G4 which suddenly stopped charging via wireless. I have a number of wireless chargers which all work with my wifes G3 but I no longer get any response when I try to charge the G4.
I sent it to LG who took 2 weeks and returned it with 'no defect found'. I've obtained another case with the wireless sticker but still nothing. NFC is fine on both cases btw.
LG then sent a spare battery but it still doesn't work.
I'm now waiting to see what they suggest. I could really do with testing both my cases on another G4 to be sure they are ok but the first worked fine for a couple months and theres no reason why a brand new one would also be faulty.
Fixed My Problem
The problem is definitely the phone itself. After trying multiple chargers and different Qi phone battery covers, I contacted Verizon and spoke with there tech support about the issue. They agreed to replace the phone since it was still under warranty, and the new phone they sent me charges just fine.
Mines gone back to LG again. If it isn't fixed this time I'm going to look to return it and switch to HTC or Samsung.,
For any who have tried wireless charging, I have a poll and questionnaire re: your experience. Would greatly appreciate your input.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/tried-wireless-charging-t3227672
Got my G4 back from LG with a new main board. Wireless charging seemed to be working. Phone charged wirelessly overnight and since then will not work again.
So I've reached the end of the road with it. I could live without wireless charging but I shouldn't have to so I'm going to push for a refund and will switch to Samsung or HTC. There's obviously a fault with wireless charging looking at the results of Waylo's poll.

Qi stopped working?

I have a t-mobile G4 and have been using qi pretty much as soon as I received the phone back in the beginning of June. I have the AliExpress sticker and another from Amazon, one on the brown leather back and another on the red leather back. About a week ago I noticed my phone wasn't charging over night so I thought maybe I just didn't place it properly but I found it just totally stopped working. I have 2 TYLT chargers and 2 Nokia puck chargers I've tried and no luck. My wife has a G4 as well so I swapped backs with hers and they work just fine.
Any ideas on a fix or anyone else with the same issue? I tried doing a hard reset already thinking maybe something set it off but that didn't help. NFC is working fine thankfully.
Any helps appreciated! Thanks
Her back works on your phone, your back dont work on your phone.
Sounds like your sticker died, they are like $3 now, just get another from amazon or ebay.
That or the alignment is off.
Appreciate it, thank you both. I tried the alignment first and that didn't work at all. I have another qi sticker coming tomorrow so hopefully that works for me. I just don't think thats the issue, I guess I didn't make my self totally clear in the beginning. I have 2 different backs for the G4 (brown and red both with qi stickers) neither work for my phone but both work on the wifes.
Huh... how do the contacts look on the back of your device?
Ok so I ordered 2 Qi stickers from Amazon and put them on a replacements. Neither work for my G4 but both work for my wifes. Im just guessing but doesn't that pretty much mean somehow my Qi is dead? I know if I get tech support from Tmo they probably won't deal with my issue or know much about it.
Does Tmobile sell the Qi case? If so, I would go there and have them install it and test it, play dumb, and ask for a replacement.

Good idea player, I saw they have the quick circle case so maybe I'll give that a shot!

The TYLT charger and the Motorola puck charger both have indicator lights. They both light up and show that Qi is activated but the phone simply doesn't receive the charge. I throw the same cover on the wifes phone and it's fine. Drives me nuts

Don't bother. I've got the exact same problem as you, except for the fact that my charger lights don't indicate that there is anything there to charge. It's like there isn't a sticker there. With the QI case, and also with my 3rd party sticker. The QI case, which I already owned, doesn't work. It does however work on my girlfriends G4 (and her working QI case, doesn't work on my phone) As far as I'm concerned, the wireless charging circuitry has died. I don't know why. But I did have a 3rd party sticker, but frankly, why should that be the cause? The wired charging circuitry has this sort of protection built in and wouldn't blow because you're using a charger from amazon, so these issues wouldn't occur.
I looked at the G4 teardown on Ifixit, and there is a separate chip on the main PCB of the G4, which controls the QI wireless charging. It is of my belief that this chip has failed, and to fix will require a main PCB replacement. IE a new PCB which contains the SOC/RAM, the chip for the nand flash, the modem, etc etc. I think that sort of repair is generally considered beyond economical repair, and a replacement device will typically be issued, although sometimes if this issue was happening on a larger scale, they might literally just swap out the main PCB for a new one to save a lot of money from wasted housings/screens etc. But on a smaller scale, the man hours to replace the PCB, typically costs more that it's considered worth to just give you a new device. I did do a factory reset as well, just to be sure there wasn't some weird glitch in the firmware that made it appear as if it wasn't charging. But right now, I'm satisfied that the QI chip is dead, and at least a replacement main PCB is needed to resolve.
I'm going to be sending my device in for repair at some point in the near future, I'll post back once I've done that and it's completed, and let you know what happened. However with this touch screen grounding issue becoming uncovered, I am considering waiting for a bit longer, and maybe once the problem has been officially addressed, then I'll send my phone in for repair or replacement..
Similar thing happened to me, I described this in many of the threads several weeks ago. Was very wary that the charging circuitry was fried somehow, and with your post describing the teardown, I'm convinced. What a pos!
I described my initial thought process here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62234065&postcount=27
Sad to say hardware failure is a realistic possibility.

And just like that, my second G4's charging circuitry is dead! Unbelievable. Poor showing, LG. This is literally 3 weeks since getting the brand new replacement through my carrier. The first one died within half a week of starting wireless charging.
BTW, the touchscreen issues are much improved with my 10n update on T-Mobile. I may just switch over to wired charging and turn it in for a warranty replacement later. My first had a pink hue on some photos and this one is not so bad.
Having the same issue here... What have people been doing to have this resolved? Going through LG support channels for replacement?

I went through my carrier for the first onebecause I'm on lease and was in the first 2 weeks with free return. If you own it, LG support channel will probably have you do a warranty return.
Glad I found this thread. I replaced my original G4 due to the wireless charging stop working. Now my replacement one has the same problem. Just messaged with Verizon and they're sending me out yet another replacement. Sort of a pain to swap everything over, but glad I can get working hardware.

Do you know when each of your phones was manufactured? My first was 5/2015, my second was 6/2015. It's on the label underneath the battery on my T-Mob version.
Not sure how they intend on preventing this from happening again and again. If the circuitry design is just bad and susceptible to this happening, I'm afraid it will happen yet again.
Maybe if LG or the carriers keep hearing about this they might actually investigate. But an actual fix to a hardware issue? I'm sorry to suggest they probably won't ever admit to it, much less fix it. It took a ridiculous amount of press for Apple to admit to Antennagate, and their fix was a stupid TPU bumper.
I've been using LG wireless charger with the G4 and a wireless sticker for 2 month. and now it stop charging wirelessly . I would think that the Qi chip is fried , but how come when I switch off the phone and put it on the wireless charger doc , the phone will startup ? if chip is fired then it should not work . if the phone switchs on by the wireless charger then it does receiver the power. I suspect this problem is software based.

Good point. Are you running stock? Rooted?
I am running stock with V10c-EUR-xx version. I have a friend with same model. I tried to switch back covers with him , to his device on same charger , and his device charge with my back cover on the wireless charger. so I guess it has some thing to do with my phone. today I tried to use it at the office while listening to music from head phones. because I can not place it on the charger while the head phone jack is connected , i tried to use it in horizontal with an eraser to raise it to the charging spot , it worked for a while before the big quit of charging. maybe I made some mess ?

Who has tried wireless charging, and is it still working?

There are numerous threads on people's experience with wireless charging, mostly involving the stickers to use, meltdowns with heat, etc. I would like to compile people's experiences.
If you do have experience, please comment on:
1. Did you ever get it to work to your satisfaction? If not, what was not satisfactory about it?
2. How long did it last? Or how long have you had it working?
3. What qi charger do/did you use?
4. If it broke down, what happened and did you ever get it working again?
5. What model of G4 and/or carrier do you have?
Also, there's a quick poll associated in this thread.

This one, it was basically the cheapest one I could find June 2014. Once the phone is charged you can see the light cycle on and off just maintaining 100%. Works fine for a bunch of devices and I don't notice if it's slow as it has 8 hours to charge when I sleep.
CHOE UPGRADED Qi Wireless Charger Charging Pad https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DRBFMZM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_WNViwbW7EJTDK
I purchased this plastic replacement back that came with a qi sticker. I used it mainly with this CHOE 3 coil charger, but also tried it on this Yootech one, and this one as well. On all three chargers, the phone got super hot while charging. So much so that at one point my phone even froze up and I had to pull the battery. It may have been the qi sticker that came with the back I bought, but I stopped wireless charging after about a week, because I just didn't like how hot it got.
I'm thinking of picking up another qi sticker, but just can't decide which one is the best.
I'm using the official LG qi charger and the quickcircle cover with qi built in. All working but i find plugging in faster so basically just end up using that instead..

I've found that exact placement on the charger can affect the charging temperature dramatically. I think if the sticker is a little ways off from the center of the qi charger (wherever that is, not sure how that is determined on the 3 coil), it heats up a lot more.

Yeah I tried my best to make sure it was right in the center, but it seems no matter where I placed it it would get hot. Plus what's the benefit of having a 3 coil charger if I have to place it in exactly the right spot? I think there is definitely something wrong with the qi sticker I'm using. If not, many others would be having similar issues. I'm using fairly widely used chargers.

I never felt comfortable using the Qi charging after hearing the noise my phone made when I set it on the charger. I have multiple brands of chargers and all produce the same noise from the phone's speakers (youtube link below). I've tried with cases and without cases on all my chargers.
Here are my qi chargers:
1. Itian Qi Standard Wireless Charger
2. Axiong Qi Wireless 3-Coils Stand Charging Pad Stand Dock Wireless Charger for Qi Phones
3. Tmvel T2 Wireless Charger Charging Mount Cradle Stand for all Qi Phones, with Wide Charging Area for LG G3, Nexus 5, Nexus 4,Nokia Lumia 920, MOTO Dro
4. Tmvel Qi Wireless Car Charger Dock for Qi-Enabled Devices
5. Nillkin Energy Stone For Nokia Lumia 920 1520 Lg Google Nexus 4 5 LG G2 HTC 8x DNA Simple Fashion Wireless Qi Power Charger Charging Pad + Leevin® NF
6. PowerBot® PB1020 Qi Enabled Wireless Charging Pad Station for All Qi Standard Compatible Devices Including Samsung, iPhone, Nokia, Google, Nexus, LG,
7. Ruix Wireless Charger -Qi Enabled Charger - White

So an impressive 50% of folks on the poll at this time have had it crap out.
Wonder if the V10 will have this issue too? I'd consider switching to that, but the G4 is big enough already for me.
1. Works as expected
2. Have it for a week now
3. PowerBot
4. n/a
I'm using the official LG G4 CFR-100 cover btw...
After reading about wireless charging, maybe it's the reason why the feature was removed from phones released in my country. We got a dual sim variant where wireless charging was removed totally.

Wireless charging was removed from dual sims because the circuitry for wireless charging is replaced by that of the second sim.

Also, there's a quick poll associated in this thread.

1. Yes, it worked perfectly.
2. I only use the wireless charger at work and I started noticing issues after the 12th work day. Today is the 13th day and it is no longer working at all. When I power off the device and stick it on the charger, the charging light briefly indicates it's charging and powers the device on and then goes back to the idle state.
3. Using this back: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZEY13SU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage and this charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LFVPRMO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
4. Came to XDA see if it's common and it looks like it is I'll try to see what happens after contacting LG support. I doubt there's much T-Mobile can do if I don't have any type of insurance or anything with them.

The T-Mobile store can put in for a warranty exchange, if you initially bought it with them. But then you get a refurb. It's $20. Alternatively, you could send it in for a factory warranty, but it'll be out for several weeks. And then after you get it back, the wireless charging will break down after a week or two. Ridiculous, right?
I think it's endemic with our H811 model. I wish this could be as big as Antennaegate, forcing LG to admit their poor design+engineering, but there aren't enough users to raise a stir.

I just had an online chat session with LG Support and since they only officially brand their Qi case for Verizon phones they are telling me that the T-Mobile model is not compatible with wireless charging and there's nothing they can do. I got this phone off CL so going to T-Mobile is going to be difficult. I purchased the LG G4 back on release day day but returned it so I was going to use that receipt with LG Support but it looks like that's a dead end.
Another question you should ask in this thread is which model people are using since this is a general G4 forum and not carrier specific. It does look like this happens with Verizon phones too though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/help/wireless-charging-stopped-t3226231
Thankfully the battery life is good enough on this phone where I can probably live without the wireless charging at work. To be honest It was more of a must have when I had the S6 since there was no way I could make it through the workday without leaving it on the charger.
Wow, really? The function that works (at least initially) because all the hardware is there, on T-Mob, is "not supported?" That sounds like LG support has their heads up their butts, just like the QA department on the wifi charging.
I'll add the question of what version G4 do you have on the questionnaire. Can't edit the poll anymore though I wish I could.
1. Locked up during the night, multiple times a week.
2. Randomly started working perfectly for 3 months. Replaced phone. Worked for about 1.5 months. Now stops charging and locks up during the night again.
3. Nokia puck + Samsung + several chinese ebay units
4. Absolutely no idea why it magically fixed itself and now magically broken.
5. Verizon G4

Yes, but not for more than a couple weeks at a time.
2. How long did it last? Or how long have you had it working?
About 2 weeks, sent in for RMA, came back not fixed, sent back, worked for a little over a week, stopped today.
3. What qi charger do/did you use?
LG Quick Circle case purchased from Verizon, 2 tylt vus, one samsung puck.
4. If it broke down, what happened and did you ever get it working again?
No idea what caused it to stop working -- today it stopped somewhere between work and home.
First time, mailing it in twice helped.
5. What model of G4 and/or carrier do you have?
Verizon

Using a Yootech sticker with a Yootech puck. Both work well. I originally had a sticker from the Fone company...the colorful one in blue and green, iirc. The wireless charging worked but the NFC was unusable with it. (not that I myself use nfc
