Screen Question - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a galaxy tab s 8.4 and a note 4, spec wise the screens are the same, but the tab s screen looks so much better, can someone tell me why, what am I missing?

From trusted review
this is because Tab S 10.5 has a RGB Stripe display, whereas the 8.4 uses diamond PenTile sub-pixels.

Edit: Opps I somehow misread the question as why the 10.5 look better. What do you mean better? More vivid colours? The Tab S has 3 different colour modes, two of which is more vivid.

[Q] Is it the same awful screen as the nexus 10?

I know the resolution is the same, but this doesn't mean it's the same screen. In particular, the nexus 10 had awful colours and wasn't very bright
In comparison the original note 10.1 had great colours and was brighter, so I'm hoping the panel on the note 10.1 is the best of both worlds
Any ideas?

well according to many sources incl. android police the answer should be no as i dont recall the nexus 10 using "clear pixels"
http://www.androidauthority.com/note-10-1-2014-edition-rgbw-lcd-pentile-268340/
All reviews I've seen are great on the screen so I have no reason to believe that it will be a bad screen.
This Note 10.1 is said to have a bright screen.

[Q] Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 or Galaxy tab s ?

Iam confused on which tab to get ,since both are priced similar in the U.K , also this will be my first tablet . few questions i have is
1. Is the AMOLED display of tab s significantly better than that of Note 10.1.( iam impressed by the display of note 10.1 but hadnt used tab s)
2.does the extra 0.4 inch of tab s make any difference?
3.is S-pen really useful productivity tool.
4.Which one is overall a better tablet(VFM).

I had a note 10.1 2014 till it fell and the screen broke. I replaced it with the 10.5 tab s.
1. Yes, the amoled display is significantly better and nothing compares to it. Watching movies on the note annoyed me because if you weren't at the PERFECT angle, then parts of the image looked slightly washed out compared to the rest of the screen, if not viewing dead on you have the same annoying issue which is compounded by the back light being on on lcd's so the blacks are dark grey and they exhibit the same washed out look if not viewing the screen dead on. Amoled screens don't have either of those issues, even in extreme viewing angles the image on screen is the same as viewing dead on, and the deep blacks are awesome as the pixels are not lit and this alone would have made me upgrade even if my note wasn't destroyed.
2. The screen size difference is negligible and I don't notice a difference really.
3. The S Pen is a very good tool for those who use it. I have a note 3 and don't the s pen with it, but on the tablet I used to use it a lot for school. Note taking on the tablet with an app named Papyrus was very convenient and that is the only thing that I will miss dearly from the note tablet (I'll be so pissed if they announce a Note S before the end of the year)
4. Overall, for the price, I'd have to give it to the Tab s. It's slightly bigger, way better screen, thinner, lighter and has much better battery life. I'll check out getting a stylus later on when school resumes but for now, the Tab s wins.

Can't decide, going Crazy. (Tab Pro vs S 8.4)

I really can't decide on which tablet to go with. I'm going crazy, have ordered and cancelled back and forth out of being undecided.
(Im buying LTE version to replace my Note 3 as my main communications device, including phonecalls and networking)
Reasons for Pro 8.4:
I do a lot of reading, so white backgrounds are handled better with the SC LCD on the Pro (brighter), also less battery consumption on lighter backgrounds (also whiter to my understanding), i don't enjoy oversaturated colors on AMOLED Screens (i set my display as professional photo profile on my Note 3, which reduces oversaturation), plus Super Clear LCD (i think it's similar to IPS?) would be superior sharpness-wise against the pentile arrangement of the S Amoled?. I don't like the gold bezel on the S much but that can be covered with a skin i plan to buy, prefer the chrome one. Slightly faster processor. Cheaper.
Reasons for S 8.4:
Newer (by a couple of months) but thinking on longevity Samsung might make the S series their baby, that means slower software updates for the Pro and maybe less longevity software wise, 3 GB Ram makes it future proof. AMOLED has a lower screen longevity, i've seen Galaxies S2/S3 in stores that looks horrendous, and well, i might not have this tablet in 2-3 years, but if i do i prefer to have it looking as good as new. Lighter.
Anyone who has owned or currently owned both can compare and give their reasons on why they chose one over the other?
I know that AMOLED has come a long way in advancements but, are the whites now closer to SC LCD? Is the bluriness from the pentile arrangement gone vs SCLCD/IPS?
Thank you!
I have two similar threads, at pro and S forum. Take a look here

What bother me the most is better support to Qualcomm processor (Pro) vs better RAM + lighter + thinner (S). Good luck your our decision

I did read both your threads, thanks
This is driving me crazy hahaha.
Post on wrong thread
Do yourself a favor and go to a store and have a look at both tablet side by side and you will see the differences. The whites are whiter and black are near perfect pitch black. The pro screen looks washed out and to me colors aren't strickingly realistic. After looking at this screen long enough, i can't see myself going back to apple retina or any ips screen anymore. I just wish samsung software is on par with apple.
I have a note3 rooted running well so I decided to buy tab s 8.4 wifi. I found that the tab S response is relatively slow and most disappointed is that tab s 8.4 doesn't support 4K video. It is not smooth, relative to note3, in some 1080p video. It is far to my expectation. I am planning to sell it out.
Do you own an Note 3 with Exynos or Snapdragon?
My guess is that sluggishness is because of some early stage problems with Exynos 5 in conjunction with highres AMOLED. Very likely it gets matured as the hardware should be pretty capable.
I had the pro and changed it to the tab s. They are both very similar.
The pro had a little bit of a better battery life. I prefer the screen on the tab s. Love the fingerprint scanner and how thin it is. I prefer the tab s overall.

You like the screen on the S better, would you be more specific?
Are we speaking about shaprness, colors, blacks, whites?
Any other reasons to go with the S instead?
Thank you

I cant find the S in my local best buy, just the Pro. So i cant compare but im going to trust you.
You say whites are whiter? I own a Note 3, and well whites are good but not as good as an IPS screen, i thought Pro's SC LCD was just another name for IPS?
Touchwiz lags behind iOS, but i actually like android better.
Thanks for your input!
I was stuck making the same decision at Best Buy lol
I did end with with the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 after doing three days of a bunch of research reading reviews and comparing the pros and cons.
Why i chose the Tab S 8.4 over the Pro
- 2560x1600 Super AMOLED screen (insane contrast ratio, the whites are bright and, well white! And the blacks are truly black!)
- Exynos S Octa cpu (two quad core cpus vs one quad core in the pro)
- 3gigs ram
- sd card support up to 128gb
There are my reasons. If you can afford the extra, what is it now, like $50? I would go for the Tab S over the Pro!
I watch bunch of youtube videos and ended here

£100 price difference here if it was only £30 I'd defiantly go for the Tab S
Right now in the states on BedtBuys website, the tab pro is $329.99.
Just in case anyone did decidd to get the pro.

If its like the 10.5 your going to get a shock if you don't like over saturated colors, at least when you first switch it on, luckily the Basic profile isn't too bad it actually tracks pretty accurate but its still a touch over saturated.
There is a way to get a degree of adjustment as far as over saturation goes but you might find it effects other things, contrast etc.

i was in bahrain yesterday and managed to check out both sizes (only LTE versions) and wow indeed the screen is as good as they said it was. there was a demo video with a red lobster, i paused it and it looked like it was painted on or something.
wish they would sell the wifi versions only i dont really need the LTE

I was in the same situation, had the Tab Pro 8.4 and gave that to a family member and bought myself the Tab S 8.4. Finding similar things like better batter on the Pro, however the AMOLED screen is just gorgeous and also I much prefer the speaker placement on the Tab S for watching movies (proper stereo placement).

Post picture of the Back of your AT&T Note 4 (Battery Cover Removed). Thanks

Can someone please take a picture of the back of their phone with the battery cover removed (Cover your IMEI #). I have gone through a couple of Note 4's which had a characteristic residue (grayish color) along the sides and edges of the device (AT&T Note 4). Thank you.

I've been dealing with the Charcoal Black Color.
Dude... you have had nothing but bad luck with this phone, eh? This and also the issue with the screen tint?
Maybe you should move to another device manufacturer....
hope this helps. I attached a pic of the back of my device (charcoal black)
Speaking about tint. I compared my Note 4's screen to my S4 Active's screen and my Note 4's screen does look noticeably more red/orange...

I saw that too in a edge vs note 4 review. The edge screen was slightly darker at max brightness but the note 4 screen was really warm looking (Whites were beige looking)

Did you make sure to have all the corresponding settings the same? Plus, you can't really compare the screen of the Note 4 to the year old S4 Active, can you?

Yeah all the video settings were the same. The S4 Active uses an IPX screen rather than a SAMOLED screen. The S4A screen looks more crisp and clear which was one of the reasons I chose it over the S4. Can't remember if I noticed any real tint differences between the S4's SAMOLED screen and the S4A's IPX screen...

S4 mini i9195 and true black amoled

Hi,
I'm wondering if the s4 mini has true black screen values when in total darkness. Mine seems to be a faint glowing gray when showing black colors. On my S4 (the big one) black is truly black, my Note 3 had this as well. Now i'm wondering if this is because at one point my s4 mini's screen was replaced, and i got a bad screen, or has samsung used older amoled screens like the one on the S3? What are your screens like? Also, has the VE (i9195i) edition updated the screen? I can only see the issue when in a totally dark room, under normal light i can't detect it. Would like to know, cause i love reading at night
the s4 mini was one of the first to use a s-stripe technology if i remember correctly and that is superior than the pentile on the other devices you have and most other Samsung phones as of late.. that is except for burn in and degrading. The screen on my 9195 had screen burn in within months of owning it and after the first year had a solid yellow tint permanently on it. Oled degrades fast and maybe that what you're finally noticing?
I do not notice a yellow tint, just a faint glow in the dark, as if there is a backlight active.
I have 2 screens here, from I9192 and I9195 and both don't display true black
Ok, thanks for confirming this. Anyone with a i9195i (ve) here? I reckon they probably used the same screens.

I have rebuilt all models, they use the same(ish) screens. the ribbon cables are different but the displays appear to be the same.
