Second Screen Custom App Icons & Widget Triggering through Tasker/Zooper/Popup Widget - LG V10 Themes and Apps

Second Screen Custom App Icons & Widget Triggering through Tasker/Zooper/Popup Widget
Hi Guys
So I know this isn't earth shattering, but given we are all feeling a bit underwhelmed with the second screen theming options I thought I'd share. I was able to get Second Screen to recognize a custom APK installed through Tasker using Tasker App Factory. I used a combination of Tasker, Popup Widget, Zooper Widget, and Tasker App Factory for this. I'm one of those guys that bought Tasker pro a long time ago, made some basic stuff, and then gave up because easier options came along... kind of the same with Zooper Widget, but I think I might actually starting using it more (even though I believe ZW support is finished) because I barely use the second screens static app options right now, it's just easier to pop onto the homescreen and open whatever I need. I think taking this route will give you access to stuff you might not want on your main screen easily (for me, that's something like the weather channel app), and doing it in any app you're already in. Essentially you just hit the app icon and your widget pops up with the information you want it to show, my widget is interactive so from there I can click certain things on the widget and open them.
I just tried recording my screen to share but it didn't record the second screen, so I'll need to charge my other phone before I can show you what I'm talking about. I'll hopefully get some pictures or a video up shortly.
By the way, this works with Nova Launcher also... I've seen some other threads where you have to use LG Launcher to change your icon.

EDIT
You will need the Zooper Widget Template that was created by Jack Burnett, I got this off of Zooper Widget Google + Community because it was easier than creating my own. I did however, edit a lot of the components to make it more in line with what I was looking for. You can do that in Zooper Widget.
This is a static widget that stays on the home screen, but allows you to interact with various shown components.

In short, you can use this widget standalone and it will not have the Popup Functionality and will always be on the home screen. Clearly this does not help if I am trying to get it on the Second Screen.
Create your Zooper Widget or Import the Template from above.
Create a new Pop Up Widget, import the previously created Zooper Widget into your Pop Up Widget and Save it.
Open Tasker, New Task, + to Add Action, Plugin, Hit Pop Widget Action Plug In… When it opens hit the pencil and select your Pop Up Widget that contains your Zooper Widget. In the bottom right of the Task Edit Screen there will be an icon select button, you can choose your custom icon at that time.
When you are done and on the Tasks list page of Tasker you can long press your Tasker Task that contains your Pop Up Widget and Custom App Icon, you’ll hit the 3 button menu at the top right and select Export. Export it As App. ( You will need Tasker App Factory for this).
When you do that hit the Android icon in the bottom right and it will ask if you want to install the Application just like it does when you download from anywhere else.
You’ll hit install, it should install, hit Done.
Go to Settings, Second Screen, Show When Main Screen is On, App Short Cuts, Scroll down to your APK (make sure you named it in Tasker) and select.
It will add to your second screen and allow you to Use your Custom Icon to interact with your pop up widget options.

What is that widget?

Here you go. @TheRealKingSen. It's actually pretty convenient

I dont understand the problem, we can change the icons on the main screen and move the app to the second screen

Hi - I'm not understanding your statement. There isn't really a problem. I'm not just changing the icons I am triggering a widget from the second screen that is actionable... We're adding our own Tasker APK to the second screen, which is clickable, and you can interact with the widget. Instead of keeping the widget on your homescreen taking up space, you can just use it whenever you want from the second screen without going to the home screen.. Like I said not earth shattering, but at the time the only changes I had seen regarding customizing second screen were changing icons, but people were saying you couldn't do that unless you used LG stock launcher..

I didnt realize it was about widgets, on the other hand, if you cannot see what is saying it doesnt make much sense, you might as well just have the app shortcut...

His option seems more about having a "peak" option so you can stay in-app.

Maybe a step-by-step guide would be great for us to actually try it out, or even placing other widgets onto it as well? Like Whatsapp, Facebook and stuff like that.

Hi Guys - that's exactly why I was putting it out there. I think the functionality is endless if you are good at creating zooper and popup widgets. I clearly am novice at zooper, popup, and tasker so this was my first go at it. However, I do believe it would allow you to create really whatever you want... I was trying to get a Social Widget created, so I'd hit the one icon and my facebook, instagram, tumblr, etc... would all pull up in one actionable widget window.... but I couldn't get the Popup Widget and Zooper Widget to play nicely in Tasker.
I can put together a guide on how it was done, but to answer the question above, my recording quality was **** but I can clearly see everything on the widget and it's large enough to select individual portions of the widget to open them... ie the wireless dbm monitor if I hit that it takes me to wireless settings, in the middle there's a small calendar square (not clear in the video), if I hit that I go to calendar. And I can do it in app due to second screen or if I am on snapchat and my videos are taking forever to load, instead of pulling down notification panel and long press wifi, I can just go to this popup widget and it shows my dbm and the network I'm connected to immediately without leaving snapchat.
I'll edit the original post so that it's more concise as to what exactly is going on. You can use a shortcut but what this method allows you to do is to create "short cut icons" for whatever you want, even if it's not provided as a typical shortcut, through your zooper widget and tasker.
I'll update what I can to make it more clear though. thanks for your feedback. Again I think It's more of a hey you can do this, someone who has awesome zooper/tasker functionality, roll with it type of thing.

If I did that you'd be limited to only the number of iapp spaces/shortcuts allowed on the second screen. In this instance, you can directly access Calendar, Clock, Wireless Settings, Settings, Weather, Battery, really whatever you want to add to the zooper widget interface by only taking up one App Icon Space in the second screen. I'm writing a more concise post now and will modify it. I added a screenshot of the widget below, it's legible.

Widget options?

I'm new to Android, and cannot for the life of me figure out how to access some sort of option menu for individual widgets. Holding down the press just gives me the chance to delete it. For instance, I'm trying to change the colors/background of Digital Clock Widget, but cannot find any way to do this. The widgets do not show up in Apps so I cannot think of another way to get to options...
EDIT or another example, I tried TypoClock, but the bottom of it is cut off... I know I could resize it by paying for LauncherPro Plus, but come on, I don't want to REsize it, I just need it to be 'normal' size! I see everyone else's as correct, surely not EVERYONE has the paid version of the program just so they can resize the clock to its APPROPRIATE size????
EDIT think I may have resolved this, reset LauncherPro defaults. I wonder if it was my changing of the rows/columns? Probably...
You get to the widget menus by adding a widget to the home screen. When you add the widget, if it has any sort of menu, it will pop up prior to being added to the homescreen. Alternatively, some widgets may have some sort of menu system built into them, but I am sure they would have clearly recognizable buttons on the widget itself to access said menu.
I noticed the popup menu with some... I guess you have to re-add if you want to change something...
but at least now I know there isn't some generic hidden widget option menu. Thanks.
On many widgets, if you tap on them, that will bring up menus or advanced features.

Zooper and Popup Widget

All of a sudden I'm not able to select an existing ZW when using Popup widget.
When selecting Zooper as the widget from within Popup Widget, one can only select the default 18 templates / sizes and not an existing created zooper widget.
I would appreciate some assistance please from someone who uses Popup Widget to place Zooper Widgets on screen.
This has worked before but not at the moment.
Thanks for any help in this regard!

Does it work if you create the Zooper widget directly on your homescreen/any other way than Popup widget? Just asking because from your initial description it kinda sounds like you have the free and not the pro version of Zooper installed.

Thank you for prompt reply.
Yes it works well when I use from within Zooper.
The issue seems to be that from within Popup Widget, there is no way to select the actual zooper widget but only the default templates.
So the 18 templates can be chosen, but not the already existing custom zooper widget that one has already created!!!
Yes, I am using Pro version.
Thanks kwerdenker

Actually, I should have stated that the way popup widgets work is to select a 'shortcut'.
So basically the process is to point the hotspot to Popup Widget and select one of the widgets prev setup in Popup Widget.
Problem is as per my original post, can't seem to create a Popup Widget using an already created Zooper Widget.
But this has worked previously!
Thanks
Ps I don't seem to be able to select a Zooper widget as the hotspot link from within Zooper either.
I can though select a Popup Widget within popup widget..
Apologies if this is getting confusing..

I tried to recreate the issue but it works for me. Could you please check your steps against mine for any differences?
Create new Popup widget either via the app or directly via a new shortcut on the homescreen/Zooper's OnTap action.
Select a Zooper widget as the Popup widget content.
Configure the settings for the Popup widget.
Exit the popup configuration.
Open the newly created Popup widget via shortcut (again either from homescreen or via Zooper)
Tap the "blank" Zooper widget and load the template.
Exit the Zooper configuration.
The Popup widget should now be completely configured and show the Zooper template when called via the shortcut.

Can you explain step 5 and 6 in greater detail please.
I pretty much do all the steps before that..
All other widgets from other apps work as expected....
These are my steps
1. Create a Zooper widget and save.
2. Select Create a new widget in Popup Widget.
3. Select Zooper.
4. Choose any of the 18 templates
5. This places a blank Zooper widget.
And this seems to be the issue.
I should be able to select a previously created Zooper widget that I have created in Step 1. Above.
Thanks for your time on this.
It is appreciated.

Ah ok, I think I understand the problem now: your expectation of the process doesn't match with the one Zooper implements
When you create a Zooper widget, you get the choice of multiple widgets. The only difference here is the size of the widget. (You used the word template here but when you talk about Zooper, template means the .zw file you can load via the SD card option. This probably had me confused a bit at the beginning.) To get to the screen where you can load the template, you first have to create a Zooper widget of any size. This will result in a widget with the text "resize or tap to start" on it. When you tap it, you'll get to the template screen.
This "tap to configure" part is problematic in combination with Popup because in the configuration screen, you can't actually tap the widget. When you do that, you get the resize option from Popup widget. So what you have to do is create the widget, configure it in Popup as far as you can. Then you exit Popup and call the Popup shortcut you just configured, so it opens the blank Zooper and you can actually tap on it to load the template.
I hope this clarifies the steps necessary to make Zooper templates work with Popup widget.

That's exactly the issue.
I didn't express it well enough, but your understanding now is perfect.
So what you have to do, can you explain each step in the relevant App please, Zooper or Popup.
Still unsure of the process.
Apologies for being difficult, but this is difficult to comprehend.
I have though, once before, been able to see the Zooper widget load successfully into the Popup Screen.
This is probably driving you insane too, but once solved I'll document everything and post it here.
Thanks

Try it with the following steps and see if you can make it work.
Create a Zooper widget, configure it the way you like, save it as a template
Open Popup widget and create a new widget
From the list, choose a Zooper widget with the appropriate size for the template you just saved
Configure the settings for the Popup widget as would normally
Exit the Popup widget configuration via the back key to save your Popup widget
Exit the Popup widget app.
Either create a shortcut to the Popup widget you just made or use the appropriate OnTap action from another Zooper widget
Open the Popup widget via the shortcut/Zooper OnTap. It will display the "blank" Zooper widget with the "resize or tap to start" message. Tap on this Zooper widget.
You should be in the "Open template" screen. Select "SD card", search for the template you saved in Step 1 and tap on it.
Your template should now be loaded in the Zooper widget you called via Popup widget.
Exit the Zooper configuration
Your template should now be loaded in the Zooper Popup widget.

Thank you very much kwerdenker.
Your instructions work perfectly.
I'm extremely grateful to you.
I obviously managed to do this once before, but by fluke.
At least now I understand the process thanks to your patience.
I'm using Uccw hotspot to call the popup widget, but will probably use Zooper at some point too.
Thank you again for your patience, I know this can be extremely frustrating, so I'm particularly appreciative.
Have a great remainder of the day.
Sorry I took so much of your time.
One last thing (promise), when creating a Zooper template, and resizing the template, how do you tell what size in pixels the resized template is?
Can't seem to see any setting that tells you the new size of the resized widget.
Thank you again.
Cheers

No problem. This is what these forums are meant for and I gladly support everyone who is willing to expand their horizon and has the will to work for it.
As to your question: you can't find one because there is none. Zooper doesn't really work with pixels but has an internal scaling engine that should make sure that widgets look the same on different screens. This doesn't always work as intended but that's another story.
I guess you want to know which size you need to set your Popup widget to, so it has the same as the original Zooper widget you saved as a template? My way for that is to just determine it by hand: get the size of your device's screen in pixel (1280 height and 720 width for your one x for example) and divide that by the number of rows/columns you have set up in your launcher. Then you can just multiply that by how many rows/columns your Zooper widget used on the homescreen and get the size you need or at least a good estimate.

looks like popup widget cant call a zooper from within themer. If a zooper included in popup widget is selected, you just get a blank "loading zooper..." message.
Any solution to this?
Sometimes this occurs when memory low.
Try reboot and see what happens.
Worth a shot.

Sense Home Widget Issues

Hello,
My Sense Home Widget is not working properly. Pinned items disappear. Also, how am I suppose to add new folders (and apps) to the widget? Every time I remove something some other app automatically gets placed in there. I figured a work around with apps by creating a folder with a current item and the new item then removing the one I don't want... but that is a stupid design. I suppose I could do the same thing and recreate all the folders, but you think it would be easier... why cant I just drag them from another home screen. Anyone else having these issues?

Sense Home is designed to automatically populate with the apps that you use most in the particular location you're in. If you want to use it, then just set your locations and use your phone as you normally would in each location and the widget will learn which apps you use where and populate the widget accordingly.
If you want total control, then just place shortcuts directly on your home screens, but you won't have the location-specific feature anymore.
I understand it is meant to auto populate, but that doesn't account for pinned items disappearing or the lack of an intuitive way for manually adding items to that widget.

Can't add apps/widgets to Nova launcher homescreen

Hi
I've just done a factory reset on my htc One. Htc backup failed miserably so I'm trying to manually reinstate my apps on Nova Launcher Prime. Long press and hold results in a popup of my homescreens in the background with no option to add apps or widgets. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Nova and checked the homescreen is unlocked but am pretty much out of ideas otherwise.
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks
go into
Nova settings > Desktop > Advanced > Lock Desktop.
That will probably be on so you cant add anything. Turn it off and you should be golden.
Thanks, but desktop lock is confirmed off. It's got to be Nova because I went briefly to sense launcher and long press works fine there.

Hi, Warthog01...
Have you tried this....
Long press on any home screen... all of the homescreens should recede slightly into the background.
Three options should appear at the bottom of the screen...
Wallpapers, Widgets and Settings.
Select the Widgets option.
** To add a widget...
...simply drag one to the home screen.
** To add an app icon, or a selection of app icons...
...locate the shortcut right at the top entitled Apps or Folder. Drag this to a homescreen... It will 'open' and provide you with a list of all of your installed apps.
Check the tickbox of those apps you wish to add. Then press 'Add' to add them directly to the homescreen, or press 'Create Folder' to add them to the homescreen in an untitled folder.
(See attached screenshots.)
Hope this helps.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Hi GedBlake
Whoa! That's different. Must have been awhile since I upgraded Nova as I've been using the old long press for both apps and widgets right up until I did the factory reset yesterday. OK, I've got your widget selection to work, but not having much luck with the apps. When I long press and the homescreens recede, there's no app/folder shortcut at the top. I see the apps/folders shortcut at the top when I click my apps box of dots in the dock, but don't see a way to drag either to a homescreen. What am I doing wrong?
Also, am I the only one who thinks this is a helluva lot more complicated than long press and select app/widget? There must be advantages--right?

I see the apps/folders shortcut at the top when I click my apps box of dots in the dock, but don't see a way to drag either to a homescreen. What am I doing wrong?
Also, am I the only one who thinks this is a helluva lot more complicated than long press and select app/widget? There must be advantages--right?

You need to press the **Widgets button**, in order to see the Apps or Folder Shortcut.
It's in the Widget drawer... at the top.
(See additional screenshot).
-----
If you take another look at my second screenshot, you should see it at the top, between Nova Action and Activities. (All of these are Shortcuts, and are dragged to the Homescreen in the same way you would drag a regular widget. And they all behave in different ways when they're dropped onto a Homescreen.)
My third screenshot, is me dragging the Apps or Folder Shortcut to the Homescreen... out of the Widget Drawer, onto a Homescreen.
...and the fourth and final screenshot is it 'opening' and displaying all of my installed apps, and from where I can make my selection of apps that I want to add to my Homescreen.

With regard to the changes in the way Nova works...
Nova changed sometime in May of this year, with version 4.x, and with the developer adopting Googles Material/Lollipop design guidelines.

Thanks again, Ged. I'm a little slow, but I'm nearly there, I think. One more dumb question ought to crack it! I now see the app drawer and have successfully dragged it to the home screen, but there are only two apps in there! Presumably, I have to populate the drawer with all my apps for them to appear. How do I do that, please?

Aha! figured this one out all by myself. I had all my apps except two ticked as hidden. They're back now and I'm in business. Thanks very much for all the assistance--don't think I would have figured this out without you.
Cheers!

That's great news, @Warthog01... Glad you got it figured out.
Happy to to be of assistance .
Rgrds,

I have another issue but don't know where to post it
I have an extensive hierarchy of tabs, folders, and folders inside of folders within my Nova Launcher app drawer setup. I'll just put it this way. I have 380 user apps downloaded, and only about 20 of them are folderless. It is all within 8 tab groups: Apps (contains app store and some stock apps), Web, Communication, Utility, Settings, Productivity, Media, and Misc. I may adjust this later. I'm using the identical red and blue icon packs "Tab Red" and Tab Blue Icon pack with the first four Tabs using only the red icon pack, and the last four only blue. It looks epic and is incredibly useful for finding what I need, but I've now spent a week trying to fix the issues that keep occurring.
I did all that work, taking me hours per day for about a week, and after each reboot, each day, the colors would reset on many of my apps, and every boot requires me to allow SD Card Write Access by moving files in ES File Explorer, or else the apps won't even appear within the app drawer (I figured this out 2 days ago). For some reason, no matter how I try to create a widget, the widgets will not show up, and when I finally get the widgets to finally work after restarting nova launcher and occasionally having to reinstall Nova and restore my backup. Even after taking all these steps, finally fixing the app drawer temporarily, My WIDGETS will require the same process to even appear anywhere. MY TABLET IS NOT ROOTED, and I am afraid to mess anything up (My rooted Note 10.1 2012 was basically rendered useless from lag and then the battery stopped working, so it is a brick that won't turn on/charge). I know there is some Xposed Module that allows users to enable write access by default, and you can use root to make external storage formatted into internal, or make nova launcher a system app, blah blah blah. I'm not going to do anything related to root, so if you know any way to fix this on 5.1.1 without rooting, that would be most appreciated. Basically, I am using my tablet for college and I probably won't root it for the next few years since I can't risk having something happen. If I can't fix this without rooting, then please recommend me a better launcher. I am really mad about these issues after all my efforts. Anyway, if you got this far, thanks for reading this and I hope someone can help.
I'm a newbie to Nova and after much scratching off head with setting up the interface I stumbled onto this thread. Thanks Ged for posting your answers - it's simple when you know how!!
Still can't add widgets to Nova Launcher. I even rooted and converted to a system app (app and prime both as system app). Widgets still won't appear on desktop. Lock Desktop is turned off. At a loss here as it happens both to my Alcatel tablet, my Stylo4.
Same issue, two different platforms.

[Q] Suggestions for Alternative apps for weather, photos etc.

Hi all, So i as usual installed Nova to use some of their gestures (such as bringing down status bar from swiping down anywhere on screen etc)
In the process i lost access to the google weather widget (as it isn't available through Nova launcher)
Any lightweight suggestions to replace it? or is there any way to get the google weather widget functioning on 3rd party launchers?
What about alternatives to google photos? To be honest i never really used photos , I'm going to try to start doing so but i notice that it doesn't even pick up all my folders such as facebook folder (pics downloaded from facebook).
How do i get it to recognize folders like this ? What other lightweight yet useful gallery app is out there? (not quickpic please that purple font is killing me)
Thanks in advanced!
quickpic version 3.4.9.1 doesnt have pink icons for me and its neutured down so no google drive, dropbox etc linking - just pure gallery.

how do you find it? its slim, lightweight, fast - and gets the job done without any extra add-ins which is what i like, almost like the huawei launcher plus you can change the display and it recognizes ALL your images on your phone (im looking at you google photo)

I too use Nova, for weather, I've been using Weather XL by exovoid for years, link
Action launcher has the Google widget and weather baked in. I switched from Nova to it years ago and while I'll go back to Nova briefly for change of pace purposes I never leave Action for very long. Once I got used to and understood the blinds and shutters features in Action everything else became dad's old launcher; including Nova. You can also set the Now page, assign gestures, all the usual staples of fully featured launchers.
I've used Piktures as my main gallery app for a few years. Great app.

thanks, tried it out, looking for something a bit more lightweight, just for the purpose of widget use.

So i installed action launcher and I cannot find the option to build out tabs or folders within the drawer itself? Also can't remove the multidot drawer icon and just use the swipe up feature by itself
Cool thing is it did import everything almost from nova

Yeah i just discovered that app ,
I also discovered that any motion photo or any other like top shot (to show you the whole selection of photos taken) etc doesn't show up in 3rd party gallery apps
You just long press and drag the icon up and out, you'll see the remove label at the top of the screen, drop it there and it's gone. The rest will take a bit of reading as Action doesn't work the way normal launchers do so it takes some explaining. Before I do you can create folders in the drawer section of the home settings, it's under folders. I'm saying this because Action doesn't really work the way Dad's old launcher used to do and there are some new paradigms in play. Don't want to deal with that then just imagine the post ends here.
In action you don't really need to make folders in the drawer as it's laid out to use it's killer features, the covers and shutters. For covers you can drop a shortcut you tap as normal to open that app and then you can also swipe or tap the shortcut and it will open a folder with whatever apps you want inside of it. Those are created by dropping one app onto another to create a folder as with most launchers, open the folder you just created and tap the menu (3 dot), choose create cover and now you have it. Tap the first icon you placed and it will simply open that app, swipe it (or double tap if you select that as the opener) and it will open up the folder underneath. I'm not sure if there is an app limit for the folders, I've had 14 in one now. Using my setup for example I use Hangouts as my personal primary text and instant message app but I also use several others; I have a hangouts cover set in the dock, as its a cover I tap it and open hangouts in most cases. Because it's a cover I have the apps for texting that I use infrequently underneath that which I access by swiping the icon instead. This goes on for all the shortcuts I set in the dock. I use a 2 page dock which is all covers save for one which is a shutter and through those have quick access to 47 applications. Much quicker than finding them in a drawer, even when folder the drawer because you will need more touches to get to the app than with a cover.
The shutter is an app shortcut which you use to either open the app or by swiping it open one of that apps widget. An example would be Whatsapp is my work messaging app. I have the icon set and use it as a shutter. I touch it and go into the app as normal. I get a lot of junk messages though that really aren't for me so sometimes I'll swipe it and open up the unread messages widget. This allows me to skip straight to the more important messages first rather than sort through them all in the app itself. The menu(3 dot) when you first open up the shutter will allow you to select the widget you want to use.
Despite all that you can still access the built in long presses if the app/icon has them. What happens in all this is the app drawer itself becomes more of an initial setup bin where the apps are laying until you set your covers and on the odd occasion you go in there to open a seldom used app. In the rare cases you do need to get into the drawer the sea of icons pulled out of the bottom ala Pixel may look cool but it's slower than using the side drawer which I would highly recommend folks try. While not looking cool it's more efficient; particularly for those with many apps. Still want the bottom drawer pullout it's the default action, just get rid of the shortcut and it's there.
You're going to want to menu dive with Action because there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. You can have it match your wallpaper for the launcher theme in the quick theme section. In quickbar you have what amounts to the Goog searchbar with extra functionality that you can adjust. I don't use it as I find little need for it with all the different ways you can get to the search function and it takes up space which can be better spent showing off my carefully selected wallpaper. The icon pack section is self explanatory. Icon appearance will let you change functions and visual cues like notifications counts. App drawers is where you will decide on trying that side drawer and other related settings. Recommend if you do go to a side drawer to tell it to remember where you left it. Otherwise it will always default to the top of the alphabet. Desktop is where you will do the meat and potatos of setting your desktop, the grid, icon scale, scroll effects, infinite scrolling, etc. One thing of interest in the desktop section is it will allow you to create a quickpage. This is a page you can "pullout" from the side that is separate from simply the page to the right of home. I use it for my travel apps of which I have a fair few but only use during that time. Desktop shortcuts will take you to the settings for which functions will show up when long pressing the home screen out in the open. You'll be able to add typical actions like wallpaper, widgets and so on but also custom actions. Docks is where you'll set up the number of dock pages if any, style of dock, dock seperators (or not), etc. Folders and shutters will allow you to change functions there for those tasks. Shortcuts is where you'll define whatever gestures you want.
While all that seems like a lot when you start fiddling with it it'll start making sense. Sorry for the length of that and I hope it wasn't too boring for those that made it this far.

Oh, yeah... If you use a launcher that allows you to set custom action widgets (Nova, Action Launcher, etc.) you could simply install Action launcher, never use it but get use of the weather widget via custom action in Nova or any other launcher which supports that function.
Huge fan of Today Weather! Can choose which service to receive forecasts from and has a number of widgets.
