HTC one M9 tethering issue .. big one - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: HTC on M9 Android 5.1 rooted and this issue tested with more than one custom rom + stock one. (Current ROM > LeeDroid )
device version: International, without locks to my service provider.
Main issue: Wi-Fi tethering hot-spot erratic behavior (Simply shuts down when i am in my car.. this was monitored with tablet and wi-fi monitoring software )
After reading and testing 3+ weeks , using 4 usb wi-fi PC dongles, 2 mini routers and every possible solution from forums and sites..... decided to ask for help here.
The story begins 4 weeks ago when i bought HTC one M9.
In my car i have Windows 7 64 PC (Car pc).
The Car Pc was connected to my previous phone (Galaxy S2 Android 4.2.?) with bluetooth dongle for conversations, and PC was using wi-fi tethering provided by the phone.
With Galaxy S2 there was no problems at all.
With HTC one.. no success.. 3 weeks of installing different android roms, changing PC Wi-Fi adapters, installing and uninstalling drivers, connecting routers and so on.
- My home PC (win 7 64) connects to hot-spot without problems.
- My laptop (win XP 32) connects to hot-spot without problems. ( Probably have to try this in car ? )
- My Tablet connects when i am home, but cannot connect when i am in a car.
- My Car PC doesn't connect. Only a few times the PC was able to see the network, but network disappeared after attempt to connect.
- Restarting does not help. Installing and uninstalling drivers does not help. Changing network settings... no success.
Even with external mini router the network simply disappears when the phone is inside the car.
- All Windows network settings changed one by one.. many times without success.
- Many Android APP's tested without success. (Some of them are doing nothing , some of them like WiFi Tether Router are more advanced but again no success)
- There is no problem with bluetooth connection and bluetooth PAN tethering .
- The phone icon for WI-FI tethering is looking ON .. even when network is not available.
- 3G Network is connected and was approved that is OK by successful bluetooth tethering test .
- The problem is the same with Stock, LeeDroid and Android Revolution roms.
- The problem persists regardless of bluetooth state On or Off.
- Default hotspot names and passwords and so on .. doesn't work.
It seems that i have to log something and provide logs to experts here. But i don't know what to log and how to log it.
I know that "Keep it simple and short" rule of this forums is violated by this post - but i am trying to avoid advises to restart the phone and the PC.
Please help... or delete this post.

Solved.. amazingly
Thanks to this forum - the problem was solved.
Why thanks to this forum ?? Because after writting all this things i was able to read and analyze it again, like if the post was not mine.
Following the logic.. the problem was hidden in car itself. By disconnecting the car battery i found that everything is working fine.
Hmmmm, what in my car can cause this?.. and i remembered that the security system of the car have one special item ... microwave proximity sensor
invisibeam-field-disturbance-sensor by Viper alarm systems
This thing caused interference ... but the problem is : - Why the HTC phone was not tested with signals like this ?. ...Samsung S2 have no problems with it.
The funny part is that i have another sensor .. not branded like this one and there is no problem with hotspot now.
(cannot post links sorry)
It is nice idea to call HTC and Viper and ask them some questions about frequency bands usage and interferences.. .. but i am far far away from USA and Korea .. and there is nothing more i can do, than changing this stupid sensor.
Maybe some day i will chahge the HTC one M9 phone, because he is uncapable of handling interferences of this magnitude ........ but not yet... not yet

[Q] WiFi problems after Froyo update

After installing the Froyo update yesterday I seem to be having troubles with my WiFi connection. The connection is being dropped after a half an hour or so and I'm unable to reconnect at that time. The Desire just keeps connecting and disconnecting to my network.
I need to reset my router in order to re-establish the connection but it gets dropped again after a half an hour.
I did not experience these problems on the previous version, I did however experience something like it when I connected my PS3 to the router via WiFi in the past. After I done that I wasn't able to connect on my laptop. But I switched to a cable for the PS3 after that anyway.
Is it possible that something on the Desire triggers an overload in the router that causes it to malfunction? I'm unable to connect with my laptop when the connection is dropped on the Desire as well.
It's a Belkin f5d7632-4, which is actually a modem-router, but after disabling the DHCP server it functions fine as a wireless router.
Thank you in advance for any ideas.
If I can't find a solution I think I have to get a new wireless router, I can't go without WiFi on my Desire at home!
If that's the case, advice for a new wireless router is welcome as well. Please post the brand and type and if it's functioning fine with the new Froyo for you.
I have the same issue. I went from standard, unbranded 2.1 to OTA 2.2 like a good citizen, but now it won't connect to my belkin wirless N router, but it DOES connect to my SKY netgear router.
What's the deal?
Yes, I've spotted some more Belkin N1 users on (the dutch website) Tweakers.net with the same problem.
I retain a good connection for about half an hour. They seem to be having the same problem right from the start.
I have a similar problem with a BT HomHub 2.0 but it drops the WiFi randomly however I do not reset the router just turn the WiFi Off and On on the phone and the Desire reconnects. My Desire will also change which SSID its connected too, i.e. from my own SSID to BT Fon or BT Openzone (I have them both turned on in my Home Hub) again to get back to my own SSID I have to stop and restart the WiFi on the phone, simply asking it to move back to my own SSID doesnt work.
Just had a call with HTC Netherlands and they advised me to try it on a different network/router and/or do a factory reset to a clean 2.2.
Has anyone tried the factory reset? I doubt that will do any good. A different router would seem to work according to Jammy1 (and I didn't expect otherwise).
Apparently something killed the compatibility between Belkin routers and Android 2.2 ?!
do you guys have the Bluetooth turned on?I realised when both the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on at the same time, the signals tend to clash thereby resulting to connection loss. Though,I experienced this on another android device (a tablet:Archos 5 AIT) especially when a major update occurs.Still waiting for my new Desire.
Random drops also on Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware...

No Bluetooth here. Never even used it.
Try turning off the bluetooth.
Bought myself a cheap Sitecom WiFi router and it works like a charm now. But I hope HTC wil fix this and other little bugs present in this version.
I had similar problems after upgrading to Froyo (custom rom) - the Wifi seemed to get connection then as soon as I tried to use it within the browser it dropped and tries to regain IP. After a bit of fiddling with settings I have found that
i) using channel 12 (12 and 13 are only available if router is set to America location) to avoid conflict with heavy wireless coverage in my area seems to help
ii) using WPA2 encryption seems to give a much stabler connection over WPA, although now and again it forgets the passkey data, even re-entering it fails, only solve was to turn wifi off then on for it to reconnect
still having this problem...
does anybody have some news on this ?
I can connect to my home router a linksys wrt600n with WPA2-PSK key but i cant connect to a belkin N1 with WPA2-PSK enabled.
I tried every setting on the belkin router, just cant get it to connet.
My device just keeps connecting and disconnecting, it gets an ip but cant connect...
What i haven't tried is setting a maual ip and see if it connects then.
If i set it to manual ip, it works.
Does anybody have some news on this ?
What channel is your router on? Read somewhere about it not liking anything over 11...
I've been having the same issue on my Desire and on HD2Android.
If a 2.1 ROM is loaded into either of my devices TKIP and AES work perfectly.
With 2.2 it only connects through my Marconi router and doesn't obtain an IP from my Belkin N1.
I don't think this is a device issue but rather a ROM/OS issue. After speaking with some Linux guys they seem to have the opinion that the driver on 2.2 doesn't resolve it's IP address with some routers. Especially higher end ones with added features like QoS ie Belkin/Linksys.

Yes that was my initial thought !
But my linksys is newer then my belkin and it has no problems connecting my phone.
The 2 wireless routers are configured the same.
On android 2.1 i had no problems.
is it possible to try and install the 2.1 wifi drivers on 2.2 ?
i had the same problem 2 months ago when i first got my Desire. worked at just about every damn wifi router but the one in my house.
did some reading, no one had an answer. just seemed that it worked on some and not on others. so, i went out to the store and i picked up a Linksys after testing the linksys at the shop. my phone connected and had internet no problem. i thought, perfect, i'll take it.
brought it home, same problem. wifi connects and no internet. no setting would fix it. i brought it back to the store. and sure enough, we plugged that very router into their connection and my phone connected and worked. they obviously would not return the router because it works (and i live in a 3rd world country, forget about it).
so, **** if i could figure it out. i wound up using an older adsl/wifi router i had and no problems. but, i have a new linksys that is just sitting in a box...
its not your router, but the phone.
you can always sell the router on internet or the phone

I had contact with HTC Scandinavia and they also recommended a factory reset. But these guys haven't got a clue - they didn't even know this was a big problem after the froyo update. Weird when you think about it, I mean wifi is kind of a big thing for a smart phone.
But no, factory reset did NOT change a thing. And replying to other messages: this thing has nothing to do with what router you use. It seems totally random almost.

[NEO] Strange wifi problem. Connects but no internet.

Hello. I have xperia neo for 1 week. It is great phone and great upgrade from my X8 but i see a strange wifi problem. My firmware is latest version - 4.0.A.2.368.
At my home phone connects fine to my wireless network and everything is stable. I do not see any disconnects, reboots or other problems. My router is linksys wrt320N and i connect at wireless N speed - 72Mbps.
When i try to connect to the wireless N network at my office the phone connects fine but i do not have internet access. I have IP assigned by the router, network is shown as connected but i do not have connectivity. I tried with 3 different browsers and with the market and nothing connects. At the same time i can connect with my laptop to the same network and i have internet. My colleagues with other phones also connect and have internet.
I tried setting static IP address on the phone but this did not help. I read that if i set static IP in router's settings assigned to the mac address of the phone this will help. Unfortunately i can not test this because i do not have access to router's settings. Also at my home i did not make such settings and everything is working fine.
Previously i have seen this problem with my X8 and the same work wifi network but it was not always present. It was present with some custom firmwares and not with others.
If you have any ideas or have seen this problem please help.
Having the same device from Globul I never had such problems for the 2 weeks I'm using it. I had some disconnects but i put the blame on my router.
if you can try changing the wifi channels
I think I've found the issue (by facing by myself)
The version neo is shippe (2.3.2) has a serious bug on AES encription.
Actually only the upgrade to 2.3.3 (no clue about upcoming 2.3.4) can fix the WPA/AES issue.
So the actual solutions are:
or change your wifi securty to WEP, updathe the phone via OTA
or use the Windows Software and update to 2.3.3.
Please note that if you use the Control Power widget it has been removed in 2.3.3
This was my problem when I had just bought my Arc.My phone couldn't surf the internet with my personal wifi network although I tried to use many browsers and also Android market. Then I reset and reinstalled my router, everything works well ^^
Ask your office IT staff to do a simple power cycle on the router and try connecting again. That may solve the problem.

[Q] my Arc has wifi problem ?

Hi everyone i just bought my arc yesterday and quite satisfied with the good quality of my phone call but today i experienced a problem is that my Arc can not compatible with the Planet WRT-415 Router .When i connect to this router the wifi icon appeared on my screen but i cannot browse to the webs ,access to the android market or do anything relate to the internet (but others router at coffee shops or public spots are ok) .I also have the iphone 4, the ipod touch and when i connect them to this Planet router everything work just fine. i assume that there is something wrong with my ARC .So could you please help me fix this problem, thank you very much
my ARC info : Model LT15i
Android version :2.3.4
Build number : 4.0.1.A.0.283
I think you need reconfigure your wireless router. you can search this case in Internet.
perhaps you can check the DHCP least time?
the lease that 'never expires' might be the problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17737923&postcount=761
i have done alot of research but still can not figure it out, i also set the DHCP least time to 1 week but it doesnt work,i think it is not the hardware problem but something wrong with the firmware because yesterday i installed FXR WIFI FIX AND RESCUE and some others WIFI FIX APPS ,my device suddenly work about 1-2 hours normally then disconnected until today ,this error really make my upset,
the others device such as ,Hd2 iphone 4 and ipod touch gen1 and my laptop are ok with the wifi from this Planet Router.ony ARC has this problem
i have done : 1)reset wifi router
2) change the channel from 1 to 11
3) install WIFI FIX APPS including FXR WIFI FIX AND RESCUE
4) reset phone settings
but no helps ,
anyone can solved this problem please help me
is your router running in mixed mode? my router was running in bgn mixed mode and none of my android devices connect. when I switched the router to 802.11g only or 802.11n only, all of the android devices connect again.
No my router is only running as g mode because i bought it long time ago about nearly 5-6 years ago so it does not have n mode, my problem is that my arc does not totally incompartible with my router ,sometime it suddently work then i can browse the web and surf the internet with my arc then i try to reconnect it in order to check if it is fixed then it is disconnect again. I feel really upset with my phone ,sorry about my english
Not sure where shall I post my question. Can't find an answer but decided not to create a new post when a wi-fi problem one already exists.
I am trying to connect to WI-Fi in my office but it's WEP encrypted with password.
I got the password to connect to it and everything is working fine apart from internet use. I am connected to wi-fi but with local access only. Can't update email, browse the web or anything like it.
Is it because the Xperia Arc S does not support WEP encryption? Or because I'm doing something wrong?

I do know that Android in general doesn't like WEP.
So in this case the only way to resolve the issue is to ask my company IT guy to change encryption, isnt it?
Are there any applications which could help with the problem or is it some kind of other issue and nothing can be done?

I am using WEP here at home, with no problems at all. I use my Xperia Arc and have an HTC HD Mini running Android from the SD card, both connect via WEP flawlessly.
If you can only view 'local' pages only, it could be that your company use a Proxy Server to filter the webpages you can access while at work. It could also be that the settings for the DNS server are incorrect.
Depending how easily your IT department can be bribed... It may be worth stocking up on beers?
it is not web or wpa the problem is the phone, but sometime i dont know why my phone suddenly work with my PLANET modem, because i used to leave the ARC with wifi on all day at my home sometime it can connect to the internet just like normal.like zombie turn back to life .i found that when i hear the notification ring tone when i receive new gmail at my phone ,so when i hear that tone i know that my phone work with my wifi.when i try to disconnect and reconnect at that time,i cant access to the internet anymore
I have the same issue with my Arc and Neo, and now Tablet S. Seems to be an intrinsic problem of Android. For Arc and Neo, they both worked fine with firmware 2.3.2, and refused to work after upgrade to 2.3.3. Now a further upgrade to 2.3.4 does not help.
Any inspiration? I searched the max possible I could for a solution with the Almighty Google God and tried days after nights to set/reset router/phone/Tablet, and play with settings. No hope. Strange thing to notice:
1/ Can connect for a while, and then drop for no reason. AND, will reconnect after an unknown time ticks;
2/ Cannot have all three SE/S things wifi connecting together to the same router (Mine: Buffalo). Only one at a time. Yet my other NBs/IPad/IPod are still working flawlessly.
3/ All three can connect to certain make of routers: e.g., free wifi in airport/cafe.
So what exactly is happening?
hi guys after 2 weeks finally i found out a solution for my home wifi internet then my android phone now work like champ .so i hope that something im about to write here will help you:
(i have 1 modem adsl named Postef,1 Wifi Access point named Planet WRT415)
here are what i did :
1) change the IP address of Modem to :192.168.1.1
change the IP address of AP to 192.168.1.2
2) change the channel of AP to 9
At the first time my modem and AP have the same IP which is 192.168.1.1 so when i use iphone4 and laptop to browse 192.168.1.1 it logged in to the Modem but my Android phone logged in to the AP so that is the problem ,the android phone can not distinguish if you use the same IP for Modem and AP

Bt Home Hub 2 Problems

Hey
I've got some severe wifi problems with the BT infinity Home Hub 2.0:
1. Sometimes I cannot connect to the hub and the phone cannot get passed "obtaining ip address"
2. On rare occasions I can connect to the hub but no data is transferred and to make matters worse it takes down the wifi network for others (Other devices remain connected but no data is transferred) To get things working again I have to reset the hub!
If I try connecting to BT Fon or BT Openzone on my network the same problems occur. (Other BT broadband users will understand what I'm talking about there)
What I've tried to fix the issues:
I've tried setting a manual ip address with no luck
I've tried a full reset of the hub
Changed the wifi channel of the hub
Turned on best performance in wifi settings on the One X
I've tried a variety of roms and am currently on Viper
I experience these issues when connecting to other BT Home Hubs and other random hotspots. But at the same time I have no issues issues connecting to other wifi hotspots such as hotel ones and public hotspots.
At the moment at home I've got an old voyager 2100 bridged to the hub and I can connect through that with no problems, but as you can understand I don't really want two routers running at the same time when it shouldn't be necessary.
If anybody has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks :cyclops:
Working perfect on my HH2. I say perfect, but as well as the HH2 will work, you'll get what I mean.

Just noticed you have the infinity version, which I assume is totally different.
Sorry about that!
(however, I'm stuck on sub 8mb (2mb, ish) in the country, I'd put up with dodgy wifi for your connection )

It's pretty much identical but I've had the same issues on other normal home hub 2s
I had the same problem whereby every time my One X connected to my Home Hub, it would cause the network to become unresponsive for all connected devices! I eventually found that changing my hub settings from 802.11 b/g/n to just 802.11 b/g did the trick.
Go here: 192.168.1.254
then: Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Wireless --> Wireless interface type.

Thanks! I'll give this a go when I get home, I wonder what the underlining issue is here that's causing all of these problems
i don't think its the phone, id blame the router, mine does similar sometimes, works after a reboot of the router though
Hi,
I encountered this issue just recently. I have a Galaxy S3 and a HomeHub2 with Infinity. I tried setting a manual IP address, rebooting router and phone, changing wifi channel etc, but none of that worked. I later noticed that the dhcp table on the router was full of expired leases for the same device. I clicked the "refresh" button on the HH2's dhcp page and it refreshed showing a list of different mac address - weird - but this time showng them with an "andriod" prefix. I manually deleted a few of the expired entries - one at a time (pita) and that seemed to fix it, i.e. I was able to reconnect and get an IP address assigned on my S3 again. I've since selected the option to "always use this ip address" on the dhcp table entry details page (just click one of the items in the list to view). I guess there must be a bug/conflict/glitch between andriod and the hh2's dhcp service which perhaps prevents expired ip address assignments from being dropped and reused. I have a few other devices that are wireless and use dhcp (ps3, iphones, ipad, ipod touch, wii, samsung smart tv, wifi printer, microwave, fridge... ok i'm kidding about those last two , and none of those have multiple expired sessions.
Hope this helps someone get round the problem.
Jeremy
PS: Great noob vid.
Funny this is here. I had this exact issue its frikking irritating. I went through the hassle of unlocking the hub to work on talk talk...I had my nexus then and it flew..I know the nexus is like that though lol. So got the x was a nightmare on WiFi.coverage wise also in the kitchen..it went below a bar. So changed to b and g only. Works okay but still is slow ans doesn't do well. Annoying seeing the hub is capable of n

I'm having the exact same problem but with the homehub 3, I was convinced it was a faulty router and have been pestering bt for a new one. I realized it was the phone whenever the same problem happened at the father in laws house (he has a hh3 also). I have been using cyanogenmod for a a few months and this prob only occoured when I started using mike1986's Rom... Maybe someone should tell him
I'm having issues with my One X and my HH3 , it's only started since i went to jellybean. It was fine before now when my HOX is conneced to the router all wireless devices (Ipad and laptops-win7/ubuntu) will drop out and back in of connection. Sometimes the router will drop it's broadband connection then come straight back up.
It's driving me mad.

[Q] Wifi Tethering Multiple Devices - Limited Connectivty

Does anyone else have problems with wifi tethering? It seems to happen for me with any rom, currently though using JellySlim_FullPower [HSD Project 4].
My problem is I start the wifi tethering from my Xperia S, then on my Windows 7 PC I can connect no problem at all and usually it works fine - The problem then is if I try and connect to the same hotspot with another device at the same (Xperia T / Nexus 7 2013). Within minutes of more than one device been connected to my Xperia S wifi hotspot all the connections drop, then on Windows 7 I get the Limited Connectivity and yellow exclamation mark.
To keep it simple, wifi tethering seems to work when only one device is connected to the hotspot, but it seems having multiple devices connected causes the connection to lose internet.
Has anyone else experienced this, have a solution maybe? I am wondering if there is a setting to allow x amount of connections at once or something
Thanks.

The only thing I can do is connect phone to PC and use USB tethering for internet on PC, then to share with another device also use hotspot.
Again though, any more devices using the same hotspot drops all the connections. I cannot find a resolution.

Have you tryed with kitkat how tethering works?
Two months later and so many many wasted hours, looks like solution found! Luckyly by my self
Go to your pc wlan device properties and change from internet protocol verion propeties ip to automatic.
I hope this helps help someone else.
Strangely two other phone tethers ok even ip wasn´t automatic. Not sure when that setting was change. Or was it.
