zenfone 2 thermal shutdown - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know whether this is a bug or a hardware problem
Model: 4GB RAM
Baseband version: 1527_5.0.44.1_1027, 1527_7.0.20.0_0723
Build number: LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00A-2.20.40.139_20151104_2652
Problem:
My zenfone 2 4gb ram , 64GB model ( not rooted) was working without any problems until the last update. Now, my phone is shutting down automatically due to a " thermal shutdown event" I have noticed sometimes that the cpu temperature is really high at times say 133F but high temperatures are not causing thermal shut down. However, I have noticed that the phone shutdowns automatically even when the temperatures are around 90F. The problem is encountered while charging (i am using the asus charger) and also during light to normal usage of the phone.
I suspect that the thermal sensor might be damaged or theres a chance that this is a bug with the new 2.20.40 build. I really am not sure. I need advice/help in fixing this problem
Thanks
How to recreate: This is a random event. I did not suceed in taking screenshots of the problem
Carrier(s): T mobile in Sim 1, Sim 2 is empty
Wi-Fi Frequency (if connected): 2.4 GHz / 802.11ac

Hi @Shhyam
I had .139 version on my phone.
No such problems with me.
This definitely is not a bug.
As you suspect it might be a malfunctioning thermal sensor.
Maybe you can do a backup of your data and perform a factory reset and see the result.

Guys, excuse my English.
This week I bought 2 tablets Lg g Pad. One for me and one for my girlfriend
I think that mine is defective because it almost never gets past the test of Antutu. Always inform your tablet which will be shut down because of heat and it turns off automatically. The few times I managed to do the test, it registers 19 to 22mil points.
On the tablet of my girlfriend I can do this test and usually always score reaches 25,000 points, with little variation.
Someone already managed to fix this? I'll have to take it to rma?
Another recurring problem I'm having with my tablet is the message "Unfortunately, bluetooth has stopped" every time I open the TrackID app. Although I have tested bluetooth and is running smoothly.

I believe the overheating gpad should be rma'd or returned to the place of purchase and exchanged. Something is definitely wrong and of the few I have heard had overheating issues I have not heard of anyone fixing them themselves...
There are different CPU bin's out there. You might have one that takes a higher voltage to hit max clocks. As it is I feel the Gpad runs very close to that software shutdown limit in my testing. I can't remember the number off the top of my head but the stock LG kernel thermal shutdown is like 95 or 97, the qualcomm hard shutdown is 120 I think. So it *is* possibly to fix by changing the kernel shutdown limit higher. I don't think that should be necessary though for the owner to do, that tablet should work with all 4 cores at 100% or you aren't getting what you paid for. You can see in your Antutu scores that yours is thermal throttling the CPU speed and STILL exceeding the limit sometimes.
You can use Faux Clock to turn off thermal settings.

I have absolutely same problems. Antutu test become my pad overheated and go to shutdown. I try to run Antutu without heat protection- same problem but shutdown without message on same place. Also I have some extra temperature while using Chrome or Opera and open a lot of bookmarks. Brightness lowering automatically due overheating and come back automatically then device become "normal" temp. I have 4.4.2 Rooted stock firmware. V50020a.
to disable automatic lowering the brightness, use app from the play store called: "LGBrightnessPatcher", NO SPACE.
also can be used to other LG's devices...

[Q] Screen flickering *Lollipop update

Hell0
Getting vertical lines on smt700 non rooted after over the air update (U.S)
After update I did a factory reset installed apps One by one and I started to notice a flicker of VERTICAL lines appearing at start of boot and also when batter is low it will freez slightly and do the vertical line thing before freezing a little then shutting off..
this only also with games...
Thanks a lot..
-AHMED-
My sister noticed an occasional black screen flash after updating her Tab S 10.5 to Lollipop. I have the same model upgraded to Lollipop and have never experienced this issue but twice, once on KitKat and once with Lollipop I saw part of the screen look scrambled (like an old set tuned to a channel that WA not in range), for a second after hitting the home key.

Green flicker
Smt700 wifi screen flashes green and gets vertical lines....
Sometimes when the screen does this flickering it restarts...
-Ahmed-
My 10.5" T800 has been on for over 200 days and has never been turned off or rebooted since i got it, no problems at all with flickering, but the older you get the less sensitive you get, I am not a gamer so my tablet is not stressed.
If you are having problems get your tablet repaired or replaced.
John.
I ve the same issue after upgrading to lollipop, I cant find the solution
Still flickering
try everything to solve this flickering with vertical line issue.
Nothing worked..
Factory reset, disable hardware overlays and limit performance ultimately won't fix this issue...
I have the same issue.
Downgrading does not solve the problem
I have seen that it happens when battery is lower than 50%.
To mitigate the problem I have set seen brightness to 30% fixed and also losing mobile segnala makes the screen flicker or the tablet to reboot
When you rotate the tablet do the vertical lines rotate as well.
John.
All problems started only after lollipop update.well most of us are getting them,,random reboots, green flickering lines, grey bars etc,,
But the only available solution for flickering Is turning the power saving mode on which is what I have done
iam facing this issue with my t705
its not the lollipop fault
its an hardware problem, the battery connector socket
This happened to me before and after the lollipop update. Someone suggested to use power saving mode to restrict CPU usage. It seems as if the tablet goes crazy whenever theres a high cpu load involved.
I have the same problem after update to lolipop. Most often occurs when there is a lot of notifications and low battery.
In my opinion is a software problem, what do you think ?
edit:
8% battery, lot of vertical lines during using notifications center, tablet reboots - this never happened before (on 4.4).
[SOLVED]
Fixed screen flickering issue !!
did this by governing the frequency to not pass more than 1.6 ghz...
Rooting then installing overclock widget and setting frequency to not pass 1.6ghz. Max..
From what I know about chips ''they are not all baked alike'' the same chip could come out with lower stable frequencies ..
I hope this helps someone for it has 100% solved the screen flickering problem for my smt700...
Thanks...

My relative has complained of an odd flicker (screen goes briefly black) after updating to Lollipop. Usually happens while moving from an app to the home screen. I sent them instructions based on that article so they can test if it fixes their issue. I'll post the results but likely after a few days to make sure it actually works. Oddly enough I have an identical model SM-T800 on Lollipop and do not have the issue that they find so annoying.
Thanks for posting the article.

I've seen it on mine since Lollipop came along. In my case I get the screen with snow - like a TV tuned to a channel with no signal - . It's happened when the screen was timed out and then awakened. I've not been bothered by it more than about 5 or 6 times so I've just not bothered with doing anything about it.

Service center in Poland (CCS) replaced screen and repaired motherboard. It seems to be fixed.
I thought it was a lollipop issue, but having followed the advice to force GPU screen rendering through developer options, I found the problem did not go away. Thus, it must be a hardware issue.

Hello,
Did you try to set the default CPU frequency to 1.6 ghz... maybe even try to govern it down to 1.4ghz.
For my WiFi smt700 simply underclocking the cpu completely fixed the issue...
The issue is due to either your tab cpu wasn't from a set baked that could handle Higher work loads or quick raises in frequency like from sleep or switching between apps.. forcing GPU rendering take away resources from cpu and forces the GPU to do the work.. Hopefully an official kernel update could help with this in the future...
But for now under clocking the cpu or force GPU rendering or powersave mode all appear to help resolve the screen flickering issue and the only constant that I can determine is that these fixes all involve taking away workload from the cpu...
UNDER CLOCK FOR NOW !!
Thanks... (hope underclocking helps some members here)

That's interesting. Unfortunately, my device is not rooted yet and I don't plan to do that in the near future. So while I can use powersaving, I can't underclock. If there is a problem with the quality of the CPU, then IMO Samsung owes me a fully working device. I mean, they sold the device with the idea it was able to run at correct speeds.

Heating Problem

Hello
I purchased asus zenphone 2 and the problem is that the phone gets heated up within 1 minute i start using.I updated the firmware and also changed the theme, still no change. Also i changed the start up apps and there is no result. How to reduce the heating in zenphone 2 ?
Is it being charged? Disconnect wifi and look for background running apps.
Is your cellular signal weak?
I suffer of heating problems when i disable auto brightness and bring the brightness to max and/or when i use internet with the sim.You should give more details.

System_Server (Android OS) High CPU and Lag

Model: Galaxy Note 4
Android: 6.01
Rooted: No
My phone once again is almost impossible to use due to constant lag and slowness. After using one of many apps to identify what was consuming all my CPU I discovered it was the Android OS process and then I drilled down using top command (Elixir 2 app) to identify sub-process system_server. The system_server process was constantly utilizing >40% CPU and when this is coupled with user processes, my CPU was pegged in the 95-100% all the time. This made my phone just about impossible to use.
I encountered this issue approx. 3mo ago and I tried everything to resolve, but ended up doing a factory reset to resolve it. after the same thing a few months ago. Doing a factory reset was the only resolution unfortunately at the time. Now that it the issue has returned, I have tried just about everything to fix it without doing a factory reset, here are some of the trouble-shooting:
Toggled bluetooth on/off
Disabled improve location accuracy options for both BT and WiFi
Removed and re-added my 2 Google accounts
Disabled Google account sync of Gmail, and selective options.
Toggled from Global/GSM to LTE mobile network mode
What did clear the system_server CPU usage issue was putting my phone in Airplane Mode. All this tells me it is radio related....
My phone has been extremely slow and hanging as a result the past three days to a point where it was FRUSTRATING the hell out me, at one point I almost threw it!!! After searching high and low on the web, I couldn't deal with it any long----so I too the plunge and performed another factory reset---which fixed the problem. Since this was the second time in 4 months, I'd like help identifying what is causing this to avoid it in the future.
Thank you in advance everyone!
Bump; 24 views and no replies yet.... I cannot be the only one who experienced this issue. Can we start a dialog on possible causes and fixes other than a full factory reset?
Thank you in advance,
i have the same issue just installed https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...-noble-rom-t3392289/post68300761#post68300761 and system_server consumes ~15% along with zygote ~6%. did you resolve problem?

I can see why you arrived at that conclusion but I'd caution a second look . I think its your wakelocks bud which is radio connected . until I disabled the lame google one my phone would get ridiculously hot and I mean physically hot as in to the touch turns out my problem was all the damn services the play store is attempting to use. It$ rediculous 1 app has twice almost 3 times as many service request as the rest of the phone . makes me wish play games was Foss compatible so bad I threw in on the bounty for it. But yeah try a wakelock sheriff specifically on play services and its stupid 22 (I think was what mine was) connected services and see if that helps
We are watching you
It looks like removing the screen pattern/password stops bumping system_server +110%, and it runs ≃ 1% CPU and 6% RAM.
Accordingly, CPU frequency is also lower. (1,4GHZ to 1Ghz).

Very high CPU usage

Hello to everyone, i hope that you can help me . I have a Zuk Z2, and I installed some roms, and with all of the roms this happens...I install the rom and the CPU is ok with a very good usage and temps, but in a day, the 2 big cores of the SnapDragon 820 are at 100%, and some time later, all the cores are at 100%... I read in the internet and the issue was because i hadn't got any text-to-speech app, (I think the processor or the OS is retarded and he is all the time searching for a text to speech app) i installed it and surprisingly the CPU was going very normal and with very good temps, but in a day, this issue stills happen and i don't know what to do for solve it...
Thanks to everyone, please give any tip or information, i'm very worried about this
PD: I'm using Android 7.1.2 and i used Kernel Adiutor for see what's going on with the CPU
In mine it was happening as there was no sim in either slot. So I think it was continuously searching for it .
Once I put my mobile to airplane mode it worked fine.
I'm using it as secondary mobile that's why no sim.
