Dialer default screen display number pad? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any way you can get the default dialer app to display the numpad when opening up? It's relatively unhelpful when it just displays a bunch of white space.

Well if you open the app, bring up the dial pad and close it but leave it in memory it should open back up the way you left it.

So you don't have "favorites"?? I thought everyone had those....
I'd put the people I call/text/email the most in favorites that way they show up. If you don't want to do this then open the dialer> open up keypad> then hit home button. Re-open dialer and keypad pops up on mine

It does open favorites by default. Favorites are helpful, but on ROMs like HTC Sense, the number pad opens when you launch the dialer and you can either dial a number right away or use the letters on the number pad to type the first few letters of a contact name to search for someone and then hit call.
I guess these are some of the finesse things that change among ROMs and I could download a different dialer app in the play store.

[DISCUSSION] Quick Keys: Anybody using these and why?

I just don't get it lol..
I keep going to program them and find NO real use for them.
I just use them for my gf, brother, and well nothing for the 3rd one
edit:
3rd one is now the browser
I have one set for music two for composing text screen and three for xda. Mainly use the compose text screen because I don't have to open messaging and then click compose, just click button then enter name and type text
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
Same with me - I use them for launching programs that I use heavily use the keyboard for.
first goes to compose sms
second goes to compose email
and the third goes to connectbot
I used mine with launcher pro to go to home screen. There is a menu on the keyboard, so I wanted the full set.
I add the "home button" quick launch with launcher pro, just go to "activities" and scroll down to launcher pro. It should be the first activity under the application.
The only one I want now is the "back" button.
I use it to directly text my gf with 1 click then type message

I only have one configured so far, it launches Voice Actions.

sense dial pad search on cm7

Im currently using cm7 rc4 and loving it. I was using miui for the last 6 months, it was great till it started rebooting twice a day. I also used calkins before that.
The only thing I miss from those roms is the search function in dialer. Where you select the letter you want from the dial pad and it sorts through the names in your contacts. I hate having to scroll through several hundred names. The favorites is close, but still not close enough to what Im looking for.
Thanks
Try "go contacts" in the market or "dialer one".

+1 Dialer one

Thanks, tried dialer one, it works perfect.
Its a trade off. In the aosp dialer you can hit the search button to search contacts. You can do this in dialer one and go contacts but they don't search through all fields of contact info like the stock app does. If you're like me and store job titles and company names with your contacts this can be a useful feature. I myself have come to rely on it. Its just pressing 1 extra button.
thanks for the tip on dialer one, but man is it ugly!
edit: go contacts is much nicer! i didn't even try it because of the +1 post for dialer one.
Dialer one has several color schemes for the background. In addition, you can customize colors of nearly everything on the screen (digits, letters under digits, contacts, 2nd row under contacts, etc..)
Although I use gosms, go contacts didn't appeal much to me..
Go contacts is SWEET. Go devs know what they're doing.
I would love if CM7 added this
Just download Go contacts. Works just as well as the Sense Dialer. Also, hitting the hardware search key on the AOSP dialer will do it to. Inconvenient, but still just one click away.

Dial by name?

How do you enable dialing contacts by spelling out their name on the dial pad? This was my most heavily used feature on my TB. I'm hoping I don't have to flash a custom rom just for this! .. thx!
I know I'm using the exDialer which supports both speed dial (long press a single number) and the dial by name feature. Both of which are lacking from the stock dialer.
I'm also using exDialer and I like it a lot. Way better than the stock dialer.
After you bring up the dialer hit the search button bottom right.

Yes that feature sux as it requires 5+ clicks as opposed to dialing it directly....
honestly there are tons of features that are just missing from this phone that I used all the time on my TB...
like a global search button (?!? wtf google) I never use the google search bar... and I wish I could reverse the home / back buttons...and remove altogether the recent apps button (I never use that either).... i guess my only option is a custom rom? any good ones out there that allow this? Or do I have to replace the launcher? I'd rather not do that tho bc i dont want any lag..... thx!
I use exdialer as well. If you're on a custom rom, there's a cm9 dialer that adds this functionality, but it doesn't work on stock roms.
Use the microphone icon on the google search bar on the homepage. "Call Dave on mobile". Works fine for me.

Yea I'm sure it works but I'd rather not announce who im calling to the whole room sometimes... dial by voice has its benefits but its just not for me I guess..

I'm also using exContacts along with Desktop VisualizeR to replace the stock dialer/contacts launch icons. That way it looks stock but opens the extools.

Oh sweet... thanks!
This was actually something that I thought would be included in ICS stock dialer. Really surprised Google hasn't figured this one out yet. Oh well.
As many others have already stated, exDialer is a free app available on the market that satisfies all your smart-dialing needs. There's even a free ICS theme available as well. I truly love this dialer in comparison to the stock ICS dialer, which was lacking so much - which I noticed right away when I got my GNex. All is well now though with exDialer installed.
Texting as well?
A little off topic but today I transferred all my contacts from my Evo3d to my Nexus. This evening I tried to send a text message and thought I could just type the contact's name into the To: field and have the phone pick it up from my contacts list. It didn't happen. Am I missing something?
thx ill check it out
one weird thing that i've noticed is the avatars for my friends in the contact list is super low resolution for some reason... its the contacts that have facebook "linked" to each contact - any idea how to fix this? It should be showing the full resolution of the image not a 120x120 pixelated image.....
also how to search the contact list for duplicates? HTC does this automatically and suggests that contacts be "linked"..... but on the GN, you have to do it contact by contact which is a PITA when you have 400+ contacts..... ideas? Thx everyone for the help!

switch to go sms pro - its much better than the stock app! be sure to disable the notifications of the stock sms app after u install it.
Pure Android Nexus & AOSP Roms don't include the feature the OP is looking for.
Just to answer the OP's question, pure Google Android Nexus phones have never included the feature you are looking for, same goes for most AOSP roms. CM doesn't include it either.
Seems silly, I don't know why, I always dial people by putting in the first few letters of their name also and the number pops up. Wish the pure Nexus line included that.

SMS Window For Lockcreen. *Edit* Get SMS Wakeup!

Is there something I'm missing? Why does htc not include an sms window for the lockscreen?
Tried sms popup which worked on previous htc's, but with ics has some weird issues. Shows blank window, and once closed keeps opening other messages on lockscreen.
Go sms pro works fine, however the lockscreen window has such a small font, you can barely read it.
Handscent is an app that has mixed reviews.
What are some other options to display an sms window message on the lockscreen?
Go to Settings -> Customize and choose "Productivity" as your lock screen style.

And now that you have the answer, I'll answer what will most likely be your next question after you get it set up. The texts shown on the productivity lock screen only show the phone number, not the person's name (even if it's in your contacts). I'm guessing this is on purpose for privacy. EG: incoming text from your fling appearing by name on your locked phone in front of your wife/girlfriend/husband/partner/boyfriend. If you have multiple messages you can swipe them left and right to see multiples w/o unlocking the phone. To go directly to a specific message drag it to the unlock ring.
That's awesome, however the lock screen doesn't turn on. You have to grab the phone and awaken it. Seems pointless lol.
*Edit* Found what I was looking for!
Get SMS Wakeup from the market. You can use any lock screen option, even wallpaper. Then in the default sms preferences select show name and number on lock screen.
Very happy about this. No more third party sms apps necessary
Now the lock screen turns on, shows the name and number of the text message without having to grab the phone!
I would like to change the screen lock, so I could put shortcuts on it to music, camera etc.
Any recommended app?

I presume you mean the icons on the lock screen.
When on the sense home screen drag and drop icons in and out of the bar at the bottom

[Q] Can't paste number into dialler app?

Copied a phone number to clipboard from chrome browser, couldn't paste it into the number entry in phone dialler app.
Anyone else get this? It's going to be a problem for me I think

Try exDialer from Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer :good:

Same here, pasting from Chrome doesn't work. If I paste the number into a draft text message, re-copy it, I can then paste into dialer. Not really a solution, but a work around at least.
so:
Chrome -> dialer = no paste
Chrome -> text ->dialer = fine.
weird!
Just tried the same with Firefox: worked
Chrome on the same webpage: couldn't paste the number to dialer. But double tapping the phone number in Chrome offered me to dial directly...
Might be a problem with Chrome....
Just before someone starts asking: stock firmware, unrooted
Anyone have select text problems?
Magnifying glass instead select option.
For example from Textra and Total Commander text editor.
