How does one ID what's using bluetooth and causing major battery drain. - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently it seems that some badly written apps are trying to use bluetooth for beacons and are killing my battery in the process. In the past I found that Gasbuddy was the culprit and could work around the problem by killing it. Now it's happening again, The apps aren't showing up in the battery display but bluetooth keeps popping up as the second largest user of battery. For example, right now my phone has been off the charger for 3 hours and bluetooth is listing 32 minutes of CPU time and 1 Hour 19 Minutes of wakelocks. It never used to even show up on the list.
What tool can I use on a non-rooted phone to identify the app that is hammering bluetooth and causing that kind of usage.
Thanks for the advice,

I don't claim to know best non root or even best rooted rooted solution but I the short time I glanced at Google Play, this one caught my attention: no permissions or ads.

Attached is highest app regarding battery concerns. The Windows drop down but only option given is to uninstall. If there's an auto starts app that doesn't require root, that may be an alternative to add more control to these apps of concern.
I usually just use the Recents/Active applications to see what's active but you're right, there's activity hiding from this monitor. Only some are neglecting permissions.
Gee, I thought someone had said no ads in their review? Adaway adware scan didn't reflect this as a concern. Any doubt why I love root?

I don't know how well it works for non root phones but greenify now has an auto hibernation mode for non root users.

@poit
While looking for an Adaway alternative for systemless root, I came upon an app which produced a link for permissions app and ad blocker; both have no root requirements.
https://m.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3vxa3b/managing_app_permissions_and_systemwide_ad_on/
You may have to search for the ad blocker but the permissions app is on XDA

I wouldn't recommend the auto installer unless temporarily enabling it for automated long process. I've used these rooted permissions apps but this one is very simple in approach although I had to ignore a lot of middle risk apps that I trust.
I installed both apps and scanned with no concerns. I'm liking the results so far.

Google maps

Does anyone know why google maps always runs in the background.
I have already turned off gps and it still continues to run even after I kill it
It may be in memory but it's very unlikely that it's actually running or using any processing power.
What makes u think that it's still running?

Go to manage applications and force stop. That will stop it until you open the app again.
actually you are better off just using manage apps then atk but I won't start that continuing argument.
When I force stop the app in manage apps it seems to have another app that is turning it back on.
As for the argument over atk. I agree however it just seems easier for me to open atk and kill a group of apps that have started as opposed to going into manage apps and closing them separately. Just a preference I suppose. Neither is really better than the other I guess
Edit: maybe what you said is true. When I use atk to kill maps it seems to turn back on. When I use manage apps it has not turned back on by itself yet. I will keep you posted. And thank you for the suggestion. Greatly appreciated
No problem, glad I could help
Download and run the "Autostarts" program. It will allow you to disable maps (and other apps) from starting when you phone first boots. A lot of apps also are triggered by other events such as "Data state changed".
If you used the app it will show up in the battery usage until you reboot.
Check out os monitor in the market. That'll tell you what's really running. You can sort by load.

Anti virus on desire

Is it usefull to install a anti virus or not.
Thanks
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
I have got a antivirus app (but only since 2 days ). I think that it is not 100% necessary to have one, but it improves the safety of your phone.
I don't know how good the apps are therefore I can't say if they are that usefull, but a study showed that there was a 400% increase of Malware since summer '10.
So I think that it would be usefull (if it works properly )

Lookout security!! Recommended
Personally I don't use any either on my phone or a Linux PC I run at home and I've had zero problems in 12 months. My windows PC is a different story and is protected to the hilt!

I've also got the Lookout security. It works without problems.
But you have to know that such apps drain your battery (because they run all the time - otherwise they wouldn't have any use )
As you can see in my first post you can't be sure that they work perfectly, but I think that it is better to have one.
Thanks for you're advice.
After reading the article I definitely install an Anti-virus
But some say that the NetQin are the best.
NetQin doesn't take much battery.
That could be right. I'm testing Lookout (free version - I think that's a pretty good antivirus app). Untill now I could see that it takes more battery with the antivirus, but not exactly how much.
I installed it one or two days ago so just test NetQin (search for threads I think that there are some here or in other forums).
There are apps with the feature to lock and locate it romotely (which I think that it is a pretty good feature, because my former phone was stolen )
But before you install a premium version I would try a free version.
I just saw that NetQin is free so you can just try it. QR:

PS: sorry for the picture size
I dunno man...I have been using lookout for more than 8 months, I updated it regularly (set to automatic update on market app)...and I have not received any virus found message even until now..
I dunno if the anti virus is reliable or there are really no viruses found in my phone.

How i got rid of battery drain...

While I own an international unlocked version of the S2, i assume the Sprint version must be very similar. After countless hours of trying to figure it out, this is what i discovered and solved my battery draining issue (it's been two months with no problems at all) i get 4 to 5 hrs display time and it lasts me all day. I was on stock 2.3.3 and recently upgraded to 2.3.4. with same results. The following tips are things i did prior to rooting, and they solved my battery drain issue.
1. Anything that tracks location is a battery drainer and i discovered that i was using wireless networks for location (it's also not that accurate) and it was the biggest culprit, so i disabled it and now i use gps (more accurate) as needed and turn it off when done. If you use Google maps with google latitude enabled, sign out of latitude when done using it.
2. App killers use more battery than saving it by closing apps and processes that run in backgroung that will automatically open right back again. Stay away from them.
3. Some apps if left in memory will constantly cause cpu spikes (suspend and events/0), in my case it was Facebook and Xfinity apps. So i close all active apps in task manager. Don't really clear ram, just close active apps.
4. Use Watchdog from Market to track any apps that might be using a lot of cpu.
5.Enabling Back up my data also drained my battery, so i disable it.
Hopes this helps...

While I can't state for certain that it's causing any extra battery drain, Carrier IQ is hooking into the location service, and every time your location changes, grokking your latitude, longitude, accuracy, and a timestamp. This is new to the Epic Touch.
I constantly have alerts for suspend and event/0 in watchdog. In the stock task manager there really isnt much running to kill. It's driving me nuts. haha My battery life isnt horrible but I think it could be better..

Massive wakelock from multiple apps (*alarm*)

Hey there, I wanted to show a new kind of battery drain that is happening to my 5X since two weeks every now and then (about 3 or 4 days).
(Nexus 5X with the latest PureNexus 6.0.1 on ElementalX kernel with HawkTail settings)
Apparently at some point, applications like Play Services, MoneyLover, Whatsapp, Tasker, App Google, Weather Timeline, Office Suite, Phone, Google Opnion Rewards, Zooper Widget start keeping alive the device with wakelocks called *alarm* or wake:[service for sync of the app] draining in an insane manner the battery (the first processor of the LITTLE chip is always at max speed).
The really odd thing is this Bluetooth graph in BetterBatteryStats:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Apparently, even if it's off, the bluetooth keep switching on and off. But the thing is that in every wakelock app I cannot find anything anormal related to the bluetooth (of course, it's off) which led me to think that maybe the graph is measuring something else.
Someone could say that it's fault of some app or even of the Play Services, but I tested even with every Google sync service disabled and nothing changed: the drain continued.
Looks like something the cause is really something system-wide because it's causing A LOT of apps misbehaving in this peculiar way.
I tried using the Battey Historian Tool, but I didn't manage to extrapolate useful information. The misbehaviour seems to stop after a reboot and after it recharged completely. Even disabling wifi and data gave no effect.
Here some screenshots of stats:
In summary, I could really use an hand in diagnosing what the hell is happening here because I am not understanding anything and I saw my fair share of wakelock problems, but nothing like this one. I'd like to undestand something before trying a factory reset.

Question Random parallel apps

Hi all, occasionally I'll get a parallel app within my app drawer, a reboot fixes it, for a while, just curious if anyone else has seen this or knows of a permanent fix? I'm the screenshot I've attached you can see the calendar app duplicated which isn't even an app that should be able to duplicate.

I unfortunately have not. It's definitely annoying though! I still don't know what triggers it either because I don't use parallel apps ever.
I had this issue when I ran Island for it's battery saver features as that manipulates user groups I think. Only time I've had that happened and you didn't mention the app though so probably not any help

The battery saving apps I'm using are greenify, naptime, servicely. (unrelated to battery sort of I'm using the GPU underclock from FKM)
Update 06/18/2021:
I reorganized my app drawer, making folders and putting everything in there or hiding the app icons via Nova Launcher (was able to hide the calendar with the parallels app icon), and so far after a reboot it hasn't come back but I also haven't used my phone much so not sure what is triggering it still.
So I've been messing around in logcat and looking for anything that might stick out and it looks like somehow apps are being randomly added to user 999. It's extremely evident when using smart launcher. pretty much any app I install is getting a duplicated parallels app.

The only way I've found to fix this is to remove the created user within adb
https://actuallydavide.com/blog/2019/04/13/how-to-remove-work-profiles-on-oneplus-devices/ this article details on how to do this. Don't worry about removing the user, if/when you create another parallel app via oneplus UI it recreates user 999.
