[Q] Few problems with my Desire, any ideas?

I'm using unbranded Desire with no mods/rooting, udgraded to the latest official Android 2.2 version.
Here are my problems:
1. People say that they couldn't reach me (number unavailable) while I was on the network all the time. Doesn't happen very often (or I just don't know that) but is really annoying when it does.
2. I am connected to my home WiFi but browser/other programs say that network connection is not available. I have to turn wifi off and on again for it to work. Can it have something to do with the "energy management" widget?
3. My phone is calling people. I get a callback from people saying I called them but they couldn't hear anything (phone was in my pocket). I was wondering if it wasn't the case when I am finishing a call and pressing the red button to end the call but someone on the other side hung up earlier and when I press, the "call" function is activated. However I remember 1 or 2 times when it was definetely not the case.
4. I desperately need a PDF reader that allows to continue reading a book in the place where I finished last time. At the moment I need to be very careful not to close the pdf reader app. When I do I need to look for the page, really annoying. This should be a free app (Google doesn't want my money, they don't allow people from my country into paid appstore )

Hello, 1&2 are really weird problems, they might be connected with the radio, can you check your radio version in settings\about\software\baseband. Some people had problems with the official OTA. Just to be sure - is your wifi alright on other devices and are you sure you have sufficient network coverage. If you download torrents with a crappy router you are likely to get problems. If you're in a low signal area it is possible to lose signal while your device is in your pocket e.g. closer to the ground, when you pick it up you see the bars, when it's in the pocket the network dies. One thing you can easily do is a factory reset , this way we'll find out if any software is causing the problem
3 - you might be turning your device on and then pressing the screen and then calling people, it is not unheard of . Ask them if they hear any noise like cars, people passing by and other stuff, if they do then that's the case
4 - search the market, there are a few, you'll need to try them to see which works best for you

I'm quite sure it is, I have the maximum signal strength on the display of the phone.

quite a few of them and NONE supporting what I need :-/

It might be worth to pop in the store, the unit might be defective, this radio is alright for froyo

If you only have a 2G connection, and are actively using data, all incoming calls will get diverted to voicemail because 2G only supports voice or data - not both at the same time. This is not an issue if you are in 3G coverage, when you can have simultaneous voice and data.
Note that this is a network side issue - 2G networks can be configured to prioritize voice over data, so that if a call comes through data is suspended, but as far as I'm aware most networks (in the UK at least) do not support this.

I guess there is no point going to the store with a problem that cannot be reproduced :-/
Anyway I don't think it's something physical, I suppose software reset will fix everything.
I had that with Nokias, there was a main board problem (every now and then it said "invalid sim card"). Every time I sent it back to the manufacturer, it came back saying "software replaced, tested, everything ok".

Thanks Dave, actually my phone is set to automatically choose network type and I am using a widget to turn off mobile data since I have WiFi at home and only turn it on when I'm outdoors.
I heard that some phones cannot decide whether they should log into the 3G or 2G and that may be the issue. I have changed the settings to use only 3G, we'll see how it works.
BTW: Dave, is it London Ealing? I used to work in Ealing O'Neill's pub back in my student days :-D

DHD Going to Voicemail

I've had my DHD for a few days now.
Originally it was locked to 3 and sold to me as brand new and still sealed in its box. All I've done is put my old sim (from my iphone) in and unlock it to my carrier (O2) and installed a few apps, etc,
However I've noticed that the majority of my calls are goiung direct to VM and that I'm not getting alerted to new VM's.
I've seen a few threads around (here and other forums) that talk about this being "the norm" when gprs is in use - either fore of background use.
So my question is ... how do I identify what is using gprs or is there some way of turnign it on/off whenever I want to use it? Not being able to receive calls just because I checked my emails or similar is ludicrous. Never had this issue with my iphone ...
Any help for this HTC / Android newbie would be great.

I have got the Nexus 7 2013 with LTE. I have inserted a SIM with full support for voice calls and SMS etc. However there is no default dialer application on the Nexus 7 and there is no link to dial or send SMS from the "Contacts" application.
I have read a bit and it seems that the problem is that the stock operating system and default configuration that is installed on this tablet does not see it as a "phone".
Is there a way to use this tablet as a phone with full support for phone dialer and SMS and is there a way to do this in the least invasive way so that I can return it to the shop if it does not work ?

Question...Are you rooted with the bootloader unlocked or are you just running stock? Then we can go from there,,, I got your back man! lol

No, this is standard Nexus 7 2013 LTE from the shop. I have done NOTHING to it so far.
I have installed a few "dialer" and "SMS" applications, but there is no way I can make a voice call or send an SMS. When these applications try to make a voice call there is an error message "voice calling not supported" or "voice calling not allowed" or something similar.
There is another thread here in these forums where a few guys have tried make it dial but no luck so far.

You need a room installed with a native dialer built-in. I'm sure there are other ways but this is the easiest. I have Cm 11 4.4.2 rom installed on my nexus 7 lte and I'm able to make phone calls.
First off, do you want your tablet rooted? It's the only way I know of to allow you to make calls. If so, there's an easy way to unlock your bootloader, root, and install a recovery. But you must do this first in order for it to make calls. You can install dialers all day long but they won't do a damn thing if you're not running the correct software. Again, I'm sure there are other ways but this one is about as easy as it gets and I know it works.
Have you ever rooted a device before? If not, it's not that hard but you must follow the steps carefully. Just let me know what you wanna do and we'll go from there. I don't wanna spend the time explaining everything if you're not interested! Lol..

Are you saying that you have got the Nexus 7 2013 model to make ordinary voice calls? yes I am very , very interested.
So far I have tinkered with my other Android phone, I have "flushed" a new ROM on it, there is a Windows application that connects to the phone and then you can format it and then download a new ROM to it. The trickiest part was to get the USB device drivers to work right, Windows is a bit tempermental.
Given proper instructions I think I will be able to flush some other ROM onto the Nexus 7, if such a ROM already exists.
But first I would like to know that we are talking about the same thing: Nexus 7, 2013 model, with LTE. And we are talking about making and receiving normal phonecalls and SMS, using a phone's SIM - for example when someone dials my number it should ring and be able to answer the call on the NExus, like on an ordinary phone. Unfortunately not. The quick summary is that out of the box the Nexus 7 2013 LTE does not have a "messaging" application or a "dialer" application, so you cannot send SMSs and you cannot make phonecalls. You can however receive SMS messages, they flash on your screen and all you can do is acknoweldge them, but there is no history, nothing.
If you download and install CM 11 or better they have enabled SMS so you have the default android SMS application and you can send and receive standard SMS messages. I was unable however to send MMS.
You can also enable SMS by doing some other tricks, modifying some framework configuration files. In both cases you need to mess with the bootloader, the recovery and so on.
The main point however is that there is no possibility so far for making or receiving phone calls. Therefore the ability to send/receive SMS is vastly irrelevant : who in their right mind sacrifices a working SIM into the Nexus just for SMS messaging? Until I can make and receice phone calls, my SIM will stay in my phone!

Actually I would steer clear. There are thousands of posts in various forums about the defective screen. I am 99% convinced it is bad hardware design and not random bad tablets. There are two huge issues:
1) I believe ALL the tablets have grounding issues so that the screen does not register touches properly, ie it misses touches, or it "clicks" in a different place to where you clicked etc. This happens when the tablet is not connected to the USB and when it is resting on a surface. For example this morning I was in bed and had the tablet next to me and tried to reply to a post, and I realised I had to press on each letter two or three times before it would register, it was because of this problem. This is not a "once in a thousand" miss-click issue, this is guaranteed to happen unless the tablet is held in your hands, in which case you are the "earth", or it is plugged in!
2) From Amazon reviews it seems the screen matrix is very fragile and very susceptible to tiny cracks, almost invinsible, however when it happens the screen then stops registering touches and you must replace it. It has happened to many people who claim they have not dropped it and have not mis-handled it in any way.
So I am returning mine today and will wait for a quality product like a Samsung to come to the market. In the meantime the Samsung Note 3 is smaller at 5.6", but it does have the HD resolution 1920x1080 and it is a phone!!! and it does not suffer silly quality issues like this.

I understood from your post that's possible to make GSM calls from Nexus 7 2013 LTE. If so, could you tell me the exact version of CM 11? I'm asking this because I can't make calls from my CM 11 4.4.4 snapshoot version.

Firstly making a phone call needs hardware support. They provided the SIM slot so that you could use the LTE / 4G / 3G / 2G data plan and not for making calls. (This is because the entire development team did not like using WiFi :cyclops: and thus used a second SIM card for data usage )
Anyways, now no matter which software you install, there will not be any voice calling (except Skype / Viber) for sure!
Such a waste!

It's actually not quite that clear cut. Most 3G/4G (LTE) tablets have all of the hardware required to make it happen today. There have even been reports of some folks getting SMS working on certain tablets, and at least on Verizon, it's known that they block SMS/MMS and voice on tablets specifically. There just isn't that much difference between a Samsung Galaxy Tab and a Mega, for instance, except that the Tab is considered a tablet and the Mega a phone. The N7 uses a different chipset, but that chipset is also used in phones...
When VoLTE finally becomes a thing, this will get a lot more interesting. While tablets technically have the hardware to place calls and texts now, once we get VoLTE support, it's going to be a lot more obvious that it's a carrier issue.

I was able to make an app that can send SMS from stock android on Nexus tablets that have a SIM (still can't receive though).
No luck with GSM/USSD yet though.

[Q] Disconnected because service is unavailable

Hoping someone can provide some direction. First and foremost I am not a HTC savvy so although there are a few threads here about the same issue none of them relate to me as I have not rooted the phone nor flashed to custom ROMs or anything to that nature. I am simple user of the phone... Now.. to the topic.. so I bought this phone for my brother in law last year as a birthday present, and at the time I had a working phone so I didnt put my mind too much to it.. but I did liked the phone very much. Two months ago, I decided to purchase one of these, so I bougtht an HTC ONE X Phone S720e Android 32GB 8MP 3G WiFi GPS Bluetooth Unlocked White. I don´t recall what versión of Android it carried at the time but looking at the specs it should had come with Android 4.0.3. After loading it up, transfering my files on to it and loading some basic apps, whatsapp, email, Skype... it off coursed asked for a software update two times which I went ahead and did. The last one it installed added Android 4.2.2 and HTC Sense 5. It was working fine, layout changed considerably... now after doing another of the updates to applications and software, specifically the transfer files update it suddenly quit recognizing data services completely. I though it might be something with the micro sim, so I tried testing a couple of others, it didnt make a difference so I decided to back up my contacts and information I had on the phone and did a Factory reset. It wipped it clean but issue remains the sames, it is unable to even recognize the sim card is missing and when I go into settings I see the message Disconnected because service is unavailable.
Reading online, saw a few folks stating that this situation was related to software updates.. so I was wondering if I could get some help on how to get this fixed. Not sure what to do, downgrade to 4.0.3 or how could I get it resolved so appreciate some direction here.

If you go to settings - about - phone identity, does it still shows the imei ? Seen many people here having their imei gone from their phone and becomes an iPod since we can't write it back. Tho you are on stock, so better send it for repair.

It shows up as unknown actually... is this a software related issue then? Im concerned about the other phone going through the same situation... should no updates be installed to it then? That makes it fairly useless and might prefer to send it back and try to get a refund instead.

OK Google - No voice responses

Hi guys
Please help! I am a few days into my OnePlus 3 ownership and for most part I'm loving it! I have been a Nexus owner since the 4, with my last device being the 6P (unfortunately just a little too big to keep) and wanted a near vanilla OS device with great hardware in the form factor.
Besides the known bugs with Oxygen OS and the outdated phone apk which I wish had call blocking and local search/caller ID - any suggestions for a solution? The real issue for me is I get no voice responses to any of my OK Google voice commands. I am running the oxygen OS 3.2.1 update.
I only get responses in the browser / on screen. This is regardless of the command, what's the weather , what's the time in Tokyo etc or set a reminder, send a text to ... etc
Now I have done the following to troubleshoot:
1) Checked all related settings (speech output on etc)
2) Tried both uk and us English and ensured languages had been downloaded
3) Factory reset and tried again from restoring Google account
4) Factory reset and tried as a new phone with no Google account
Whatever I do there is no voice response. I will note during Google maps use if I ask a question I get a response.
OnePlus support offer nothing but an RMA which of course is probably no the solution it must be a setting or a software bug.
Can fellow owners check if they have the same issue and if they have a solution, kindly share it?

My first op3 was defective. Same issues with the mic. (besides phone calling)
Don't waste your time guys., you have to return device.

I think it only works on Google launcher home screen and any screen while phone is on (if activated under settings). It will not work while screen is off. Correct? Or are you referring to something different?

Thanks for this, to be clear are you saying you had the same problem, voice commands via 'OK Google' were working but the response was only on screen? But your replacement phone works fine and you get audio responses/'OK Google' talks back?

Thanks for your response, I am referring to the fact the phone doesn't talk back. No voice response when asked a question. 'OK Google' works from any screen when the phone is on (and you choose the setting) but whatever you do the answer or response is on screen only, no answers are spoken back.

I have the exact same issue, it was working when I received the phone. But since 4-5 days it has stopped responding back, it just shows the answers on screen.
Good to know that I am not the only one facing this problem. I hope it is just a software bug and will be fixed soon.

i am saddened because of this as well! I used to ask Google Now about the weather, time, to set the alarm and the talk-back is a great feature to
me, just that now my OP3 has lost this capability !!! I've already googled for a while, a few are questioning same problem but no resolution!

Wow, it got fixed automatically after so many days. I was just setting a reminder and it replied with voice, so I tested other commands too, like weather, time and other stuff. It is working properly for me now, please check if it's fixed for you too. (I didn't update to 3.2.2 yet)

I've had this phone for almost a week and have had the same issues. Tried clearing cache, reinstalling Google, changing settings and nothing worked. All of sudden it started talking back to me yesterday. So there is hope.

Hi FateWeaver, I updated to 3.22 and this is now fixed!!! That's the solution guys at least it was for me, install the oxygen os 3.22 update! So happy OnePlus are delivering fixes so quickly!
