Amazon Fire HD 8" & 10" - remove firelauncher (no root) - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Android Development

I am ecstatic to announce that I have found a solution as of 2016! Please visit my thread describing the tutorial on how to remove firelauncher and use any launcher you choose without rooting your Fire HD device!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tut-remove-default-launcher-amazon-fire-t3288192
I have been reading a lot of forum posts and decided to make an account here in order to communicate with you guys. I see you are all interested in possible modifications to the Kindle Fire, and as you must know the HD 8 & 10 models do not have a root currently.
I am relatively new to Android but I am really enjoying working with it. The only thing I do not like about the FireOS is the firelauncher (com.amazon.firelauncher), and I have been looking for a working way to remove, replace, or modify it without rooting (unless there is a way).
I found two methods to accomplish this, however it needs some tweaking. I think someone as experienced as you might be able to perfect it.
Method 1:
I noticed that the stock APK file, ("/system/priv-app/com.amazon.firelauncher/com.amazon.firelauncher.apk") cannot be touched as it is a read-only filesystem, but I can reinstall it. (I was able to reinstall a slightly older version of firelauncher successfully using "adb install -r -d firelauncher.apk" successfully by the way). During the installation there is a brief moment where it is deleted, and the prompt to select a different default launcher is presented, and works. Sadly I have no clue on how to prevent firelauncher from finishing its installation. I tried "reboot -p" to kill the device in the middle of an installation and various other things but nothing worked.
Method 2:
Like I mentioned previously, I was able to reinstall any version or a modified version of the APK. This allowed me to edit the contents of the APK and delete some important resources, causing the launcher to crash and switch over to the last opened window, I think there is potential in here if classes.dex could be modified somehow.
Method 3:
I was able to take a different launcher and decompile it, edit the package name from net.example.testlauncher to com.amazon.firelauncher, however I don't know how to sign it properly and the mismatch caused the tablet to reject the apk. This has REAL potential as a method, but it may be impossible to forge a certificate signature.
Edit: It may be possible to disable the certificate checking,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698352
If anyone is able to collaborate with me on this, we may be able to finally get rid of the horrendous firelauncher. Additionally, anyone who would like to remotely test things on my Fire HD 8 let me know and I'll setup a console or something for you.
I am attatching a previous version of firelauncher.apk, to install it (which there is no real reason to do so) type adb install -r -d firelauncher.apk

I have been experimenting with modified backup and restore files, no luck there. I have also worked with sideloading certain files, and of course no luck there either. There might be some potential in the fastboot screen, but I am not sure which command to use to unlock the kernal. I will post a list of all the getvars if anyone will find them useful. I remember unlock_status: false but that is about it. fastboot oem unlock does nothing as it is an invalid command.

I am ecstatic to announce that a temporary fix for this has been found! Please visit my thread describing the tutorial on how to remove firelauncher and use any launcher you choose without rooting your Fire HD device!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tut-remove-default-launcher-amazon-fire-t3288192

Either deal with the quick delay of the fire launcher, or just don't use a different launcher.

Launcher Hijack works flawlessly if you delete the firelauncher. The home button will still work, but there are other side affects.
If you don't delete firelauncher, and I sincerely hope you haven't, then you still get the occasional delay like normal.

I GOT IT TO WORK!
After my latest failures, I got the bright idea to try something that has never worked for me before: LauncherHijack
I downloaded LauncherHijackV3 from GitHub(mod please help with the link ) and sideloaded it onto my kindle and installed.
I opened it and selected ADW Launcher (the only one on the list), and now the home button works beautifully, with no lag at all.
I'm so happy im gonna make a new thread!  :victory: :good: :victory:

Well... but there is the problem that whenever you go home, sometimes, you see for a brief period the amazon launcher, making it confusing and weird. That thing made me return to the amazon launcher due to the trouble it gave me.

So.. lag or no lag? Do you still see the fire launcher when using adw?

Yes I am aware of that now. At first I had deleted firelauncher and then installed LauncherHijack. This completely erased any lag or glitches with the main fire launcher, but had some other side effects not related to the launcher or the home button.
So my statement is now outdated and i will be editing it now.

Yes. I believe there is no way around this as of now without root.

1.1 Firmware mirror for NST

So I just picked up a nook simple touch and am eager to root it, I've done plenty with Android on phones, never an ebook though. I've been reading the material here and had a couple questions.
1.) It looks like 1.1 firmware is needed for most of the roots here, however B&N only lists 1.2 currently. Does anyone have a mirror to 1.1 or tell me how to get that, currently I'm on 1.0.1
2.) If I can't get 1.1 are there any roots that will work for 1.2? I've been following the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and it looks like it only works from 1.1 by the sound of it.
3.) Is everyone or anyone using the NoRefreshToggle? If so what do you think? Is it worth trying it out? Dangers of using it? When you toggle it off do you get greyscale back? From the sounds of the post, it's pure black and white with it on which is fine if when I disable it, it goes back to normal greyscale images.
4.) Did anyone find out how to turn off page animations in the kindle app? not a big deal, just wondering.
Thanks a lot, look forward to trying this out.
Here's a copy of nook_1_1_update.zip I pulled down from B&N a few weeks ago: http://www.mediafire.com/?h5kn1214gfjhkcg In the end I didn't need it, so I can't confirm how the upgrade works (the instructions said just put the file within the zip on an SD card and reboot)

Thanks for the link
Thanks for the 1.1 post link, however I updated to 1.1.2 and followed the instructions and everything seems to be ok, I can get email, install from the market place, only thing I can't do is search the market. A search just lists a blank page and doesn't find any apps, any ideas.
As for the Kindle question, after installing kindle app and seeing the performance, this isn't a big deal at all.
Still curious on the refresh toggle however, any ideas on that, have you guys tried it out? I may post there if I don't hear back.
Thanks

I have checked and as you said market search functionality is absent, it seems to be broken since the Googleplay thing.
As a way to regain it, in the mean time we get an updated market working, install Searchmarket.
The NorefreshToggle is still in early stages, but works quite well for webpages, etc.
Try it, there are no risks on it, on any program when you enable the app it will work, and when you go into a menu it will return to normal grayscale.

How do I install Searchmarket if I can't search the market for it lol ... Do I have to install it on my phone first, then transfer the apk over to the NST, then file browse and install it from /system/app ?
I tried NoRefreshToggle, it's interesting, like you said a work in progress ... Tried it with GReader unfortunatly it shuts off between Feed view and Article view which is a pain, but I think that's probably to avoid ghosting.
As for web page viewing, Opera Mini FCs on me everytime I open it, as does the stock browser, so I haven't been able to try browsing as of yet Still looking for a solution to that one.
Thanks for all the info, really enjoying the NST if NoRefreshToggle keeps getting better this could really be a killer device

I just use the Google Play website to initiate installs to the nook (it appears in my device list as "phone")
The included Opera Mini installation never worked for me (no FC nothing). In the end I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

So are you saying you are on 1.1.2 rooted and enjoying it?
Should I downgrade to 1.1.1 and root or just go ahead with 1.1.2?
I can't wait to try this out.

I can't speak to the upgrade patch from 1.1.1, I bought my NST yesterday, it had 1.0.1 on it, I upgraded to 1.1.2 then followed the rooting instructions for 1.1.0 or was it 1.1.1 can't remember, in any case, after rooting everything seems to be working just fine

It was 1.1.0, there was no 1.1.1
Is there any risk upgrading to 1.1.2 from 1.1.0? Would I have to reinstall google apps &c? Did anything change in between 1.1.0 and 1.1.2? (I have heard that they may have fixed the WiFi issues that were plaguing me a few months ago.)

[Q] Troublesome installation of Xposed and GravityBox on Fairphone

Dear internet community,
i would like to adress my problems concerning the installation of Xposed and GravityBox on my Fairphone. You must know that this is my very first smartphone and i dont really know how to use them yet. But i know that i would like to be able to change my Locksreen wallpaper, whích is the only intention for me to try to install Xposed in the first place.
So lets get to the nuts and bolts:
Firstly i tried to "unroot" my phone (of which i dont have any clue what that might mean), but the program i used (universal unroot) gave me this message upon trying: "please allow root access now. If you cant allow root access your device is most likely not rooted". At this point i dont know if i am able to allow root acess to that program, which ist rediculous in itself since this program should allow me to do that in the first place. I checked in the settings but couldnt find anything that looked like root access.
The next step was to install Xposed (version 2.6.1 and then 2.7 both with the same result). After the installation and the reboot, Xposed states unter the "Framework" category that: "the latest version of Xposed is currently not active (my app manager tells me it is). Did you install the framework and reboot?". Again i did the reboot and i installed it. If try to go further into the Framework menu and press the "install/update"-button it tells me: "failed to get root access. make sure your device is rooted properly and you have not blocked shell commands".
My question now is: do you have a solution for my problem? I would be very thankfull and appreciative if you would offer me a solution, since my intentional desire of changing the Lockscreen Wallpaper is such a small thing that it is quite hillaours as to how much effort has to be put in to change this small detail. Please dear community, help me out!
With kind regards
Alex

First of all: I see no point in "unrooting" my device. Since you said, you don't have any clue what that might mean, maybe this helps.
The term "root" is comparable to the "admin rights" on your computer. Some people do not need those rights. But If you don't need it just don't use it. If you "unroot" your device, what you do is, you throw away those admin rights. I don't see why you want to do this. The only reason which comes to my mind, is if you want your manufacture to repair your phone using your warranty. They basically don't like it if your phone is rooted, and say it violates the warranty conditions. But then again: fairphone comes pre-rooted, so having root does not void the warranty of your fairphone.
Usually if a program wants to have those root(/admin) rights, a screen pops up where you have to confirm that the app might use those rights.
If you want to know for what root rights can be good for, just google "rooting android" or something like that to read up on that topic.

Seems like you are actually unrooted. To use xposed and all its cool modules you need to have root rights. Unrooting your phone to use xposed is just contra productive. Maybe install SuperSU to re-gain root rights. But maybe you need to re-flash your OS.

Wait, what? Did I understand correctly, that you unrooted your phone to use an app that requires root so that you can change your lockscreen background?
Dude, you can do this in the settings without any root/unroot/xposed stuff.
As you said it is just a small detail, and such a standard feature, so it would be CRAZY if you need to go through such a hassle.
Just go into settings and somewhere in the display or lockscreen settings you can choose a background (you might need to disable the mood background for this). I do not have my fairphone anymore, so I cannot tell you where exactly that option is. Maybe someone else can point to the the exact location of that setting.

I can't find any option for a different lockscreen image on my FP - only normal background image (wich is then also used for lockscreen, if I have mood background disabled). So I would also suggest GravityBox, which seems to be a too complex topic for your first smartphone ever...

I know that this option is there. I had a custom lockscreen background (without using some xposed module like gravitybox). I will check with a friend who has a Fairphone, and tell you where the setting is.
I am sorry. Apparently I was mistaken. Changing the lockscreen background to a different wallpaper than the homescreen background seems not to be possible. You can just choose between mood background or not. I thought I had two different backgrounds while I had my Fairphone, but seems like I was wrong. sorry
Why is this not implemented? What I know for sure is that is a feature in CM and and Samsungs stock android version. I do not know about AOSP android.
Thanks for your feedback, Hyst!
I second your question about the missing implementation, but that's quite in a row with some other phone's stock features I am missing on the FP - e.g. a more solid gps, special character search in contacts and some other things other phones can do. Then I remember, Fairphone is still quite new on the market and neither has the experience nor the financial background to act like e.g. Samsung would do. And taken that into account, I'm sure they will grow with the requirements...

Now in a later post of yours you said that it is not possible. But i qould like to go into why i unrooted my phone. I was watching a Video from this site and misunderstood what has been said. I unrooted my phone, thinking that this would be necessary to make Xposed work. By that time i didnt really know how all of this works. I know its a rookie mistake and a "stupid" one, but i learned something and i am okay with it.
The next task now is to reflash my phone. Maybe you guys have an idea as to why it wont work: I followed the instructions on the Fairphone website and it still aborts during installation.
Edit: I am not allowed to linkt external websites, so i cant give you the video and fairphone installation guide links.

Hope I didn't get it completely wrong but just wanna throw in another idea: why don't you reset your phone to factory settings? Reflashing it sounds like a lot of work for a beginner like you.. (Didn't do it either)
Since the phone is/was rooted from release on, resetting it should do the charme, imo. If you don't have a lot of files to lose I'd try that.
PS: really funny how complicated it got for you since your main intention was to change the lockscreen wallpaper )

PS: That, unfortunately, didnt do the trick
Edit2:
Since the Fairphone support hasn't replied yet, i tried another solution, but i need to ask you guys for help. I was following the instructions in the Fairphone wiki under the "How to restore Fairphone if you totally bricked it" topic. All the necessary files and programes are downloaded. Now when i choose the scatter file of the fairphone binarys the program gives me this message: "Error initialising scatter file failed. Please check the name of scatter file which you load is legal". if i press the download button the program gives me this message: "Download list is empty, please select a scatter file before executing"
I really dont get this. The fairphone binarys are supposed to work with this program, yet they are not. Can anyone help? Is there something really pbvious i have overlooked?

I don't think you need to go through that mouch trouble as you're still able to use your phone (if I understood that correctly).
How about re-installing the Fairphone software from recovery? There's a nice guide on how to do that at:
fairphone.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202478028-Manually-install-Fairphone-OS-software-update-version-Cherry-1-6
Afterwards the superuser binaries should be back and you will have root access again.

Which Fairphone model do you have? If it's the old one (from last year's batch), did you already use the repartitioning tool to "unify" your internal storage? Which update did you try to apply (exact filename)?

What else could be done here?

Applying that one from recovery clearly should have worked. I've even used it myself with my (already repartitioned) first batch phone.
If you want to be sure the .zip file you downloaded is not corrupted, compute its MD5 checksum. If you're under Windows, use a tool like heise.de/download/md5summer.html
Under Linux, just use md5sum <filename>
The checksum should match the one found on Fairphone's software update page: 664ca09368a4c922a12dc2526afe092b

1.5 is the version your phone was shipped with, I think. As they issued the update to 1.6 just a few days after the new phones started shipping, I guess they thought putting only the new image up on their website was enough.

The awesome support Team worked something out and my phone is finally rerooted! Now, i have installed Xposed, rebooted it, installed Gravitybox, rebooted it and both programs are working fine. After some fiddling around it finally has worked!! For most of you it might seem to be a small thing and really not that important, but for me it is. Honestly the only two things i really use to personalize the phone is the Wallpaper / Lockscreen and the WakeupCall ringtone.
Thank you so much for all of your support and patience!

Well be in next version, if you set icon to invisible, it will also disappear from leanback launcher.

Do you just download to phone or PC and put the extraction on the Nexus Player to gain root?

Are you referring to the launcher settings or SuperSU settings there should be an option in SuperSU settings to set the SuperSU icon to invisible.
I just happened to check my system today and had the OTA update from LRX21M to LRX21V waiting. I tried installing it but Recovery stopped halfway through the install with an Error. I got back into Android with a power-cycle, so things are fine, but it's still on 21M.
I'm guessing this was due to having rooted the device. Is there a proper way to remove SuperSU to allow for a system update? I see there are 3 different options for cleaning up; does it particularly matter which one I choose? I could just pick one and try it but I'm kind of curious what the differences are between the options. Anybody know?
Update: I tried the second and third cleanup options (new superuser app and full unroot) and neither got me into a state where the OTA was successful. So I just downloaded the factory image and flashed the system.img from it, then reapplied the original root process.

probably a full unroot and flashing the stock boot.img would fully unroot, I wonder when LRX22C (5.0.1) will hit the nexus player
The root is fundamental in all devices for many things, and thanks to Chainfire and others independent developers we can consider Android a semi-open platform. (semi-open because not all is open source)
We don't want Android like the Apple walled garden, but we are not even against the sale of the software, we just want a common garden in which the user can choose and is not obliged.
For example with the root, it was easier to start this project:
Nexus Player with a Full Version of Android Lollipop https://plus.google.com/103019026671039069038/posts/V5XaLxK3vN8
This is just the base rom with all hardware components working, on this base that is very usable, i want add many other options. like external usb webcam and mic, improving the audio part that have fixed volume and many other things useful for the use in TV.
Nexus Player is not just Android TV, but is the first Nexus device with an intel cpu. Is a milestone in the evolution of Android.
This is just the start and I am very open to sharing and collaboration on this project.
Thanks Chainfire for the root and for your "How-To SU" guidelines.
Out of interest will rooting prevent OTA updates from installing in the future?

I did this, despite the warning it gave me. Now although I still get permission dialogs etc, I can not run the main program to delete apps etc from SU access. Is there anyway to go back to the main screen? I went to the apps sections of the NP and unlike other apps it didnt have an open command.
To get it back do I need to uninstall and then re-CFroot?
Thanks. I should pay better attention to dialog boxes but its not a huge deal.

Google SPMC, download SPMC and install it, report back if vidoe is still off center. For sportsdevil, google "sportsdevil tvaddons". The first result should be the future of sportsdevil thread. Click on it and look at the last couple of pages of that thread, there will be a link for the latest update posted on one of the last couple pages. The sportdevil update is a manual update, meaning you need to unzip the file, take the follder inside and move it to your Kodi addons folder. If you do not know how to do that let me know.

Should i remove Kodi then do that, and i dont know how to do anything really with this lol so any detailed instructions greatly appreciated
Man honestly, Kodi is so vast with so many different options available to do whatever you want to do...you are better off googling or youtubing whatever it is you are trying to accomplish, and chances are there is a step-by-step process that tells you how to do exactly that. That is how most of us navigated through the initial setup anyway.
I second the uninstall kodi, install spmc sentiment mentioned above.

You can uninstall it if you want, but report back if and let us know if its stll off center. If its off center after installing SPMC I will tell you how to fix it. The main thing is making sure its centered and after that is fixed I will help with the next issue you have. Since you are a novice its best to do things one step at a time so you do not get confused.
Hold up. Did you ever calibrate your Fire TV with your TV screen? One of my TVs needed to be scaled back 3%. Go to the display settings for the Fire TV and calibrate the screen first. If it's still off, then try other things.

So turns out this was the screen issue im pretty sure i did do this step before but maybe i hit back instead of accept thats the only thing i can think of
If firetv is OK but Kodi is off... Go to KODI>system>settings>system>video output>video calibration to fix
Can someone post a link to the download I should use for spmc, I've seen a few and want to make sure I download the right one
Go to spmc.semperpax.com an download the latest version. After installing I will show you how to add sportsdevil.
1) Post #6 gave you the answer. Mine needs to be set at 2% for my TV. However, if you changed displays settings in Kodi, you need to undo those changes to Kodi.
2) To install Sports Devil, you will need to do a google search for it. (Youtube has tutorials BTW) Once you have the .zip file, you will need to sideload it to the Amazon fire TV. Once sideloaded to the AFTV, you can then install the zip to Kodi by going to System/add-ons/Install from zip file/ choose your the location where you sideloaded the zip file.
p.s. - if you need help sideloading things to the Amazon Fire TV, there are many ways. (1. the use of ADB in command line. 2. using programs on your computer 3. using an app on your android.) This is a great site for Amazon Fire TV users: www.aftvnews.com Go here and take a look a the tutorials section. It's awesome!

Lineage OS 16 - Pixel Launcher Keeps Stopping

Finally figured out how to install Lineage... I think... it's installed for sure but not working. When at first startup it asked to choose a launcher, I picked PIXEL because had no idea which was which, and now I have no desktop, just the wallpaper and every 10sec the message pops up saying Pixel Launcher Keeps Stopping.
Went into the app, force stop, cleared cache and data, reboot and no change. No icons or anything so can't get into Play and download another launcher either.
Any ideas? I have 0 rooting/image/lineage type experience. My old tablet was a Nexus10 and Wugfresh did everything for me so, kinda new to this.
Thanks

Looks like you have a strange lineageOS version. Normally there is only trebuchet launcher. You can always restart installation at the step in twrp wipe system and data.

I followed howtogeek.com/348545/how-to-install-lineageos-on-android (I'm too new to post links).
Maybe it's the GApps? was vague on that stuff and were like 8 options and no idea which to choose so went for the Stock version
I need to redo it again anyways... followed directions but SuperSU not working right... tablet does show rooted but when I went to install Pokemon Go, immediately says won't work on rooted devices. Stupid Niantic. Doesn't matter, I never used anything that needed Root anyways. I'm a pretty basic user. Just want the games and Chrome to work really... but ever since 7.1 downloaded to the tablet, quite a few people with the same tablet can no longer play Marvel Contest of Champions because of the insanely long load screens and lag. From what I tried so far, this fixed it.
I'll try the install of LineageOS again but leaving out SuperSU and GApps.

There is a XDA'er playing Pokémon go without GApps. Search for @Setialpha and his nanodroid project.

All working now... tried without GApps and didn't like it, couldn't figure out where Google app store button was etc... so redid it again, same way as before with GApps but, left out the SuperSU which is what rooted the tablet, and works fine now. Just made sure when started up, not to choose Pixel as a launcher.
Need to figure out a few things... hoping a way to switch around the clock... time in the top/left corner is weird... never had a phone/tablet where it wasn't top/right. But small issues like that... just happy that certain apps are running properly again. Have playing games on a phone, I have big hands.
One issue I can't sort out yet... when I hold down on the background I get options for home settings, widgets and wallpaper...when I click to change wallpaper it just says app not installed

How did you get it to work all over again? I have a similar problem with no idea of how to boot my phone back in recovery mode (TWRP) and flash another GApps/ROM. I was using ADB command and honestly, I'm green on this.

Can't recall... spent hours on this thing to make it work and now that it does I haven't touched the installer since.
Fixed
I rebooted into TWRP, copied on my computer the file "/data/system/packages.xml" edited under <package name="com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher" ... and <perms>, I added the following lines:
<item name="android.permission.STATUS_BAR" granted="true" flags="0" />
<item name="android.permission.MANAGE_ACTIVITY_STACKS" granted="true" flags="0" />
(watch the screenshot)
saved the new xml and put back in /data/system/ with TWRP file manager... and the crash was fixed, no need to install other stuff!
