Can MHL adapter preserve original input aspect ratio? - Galaxy Tab S2 Accessories

Hi,
I have Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 LTE (2048x1536, 4:3 aspect ratio) and would like to connect it to a 4:3 old CRT SD-TV and get tablet screen mirrored in fullscreen since aspect ratios are the same after all.
I've tried Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV adapter together with a HDMI to AV adapter, and the result is both pillarboxed and letterboxed picture on TV. It seems that MHL adapter always outputs 16:9 picture, thus pillarboxing the original 4:3 content, and then HDMI to AV adapter simply letterboxes the received 16:9 input into 4:3 output as that's the target aspect ratio for this CRT TV.
So, I guess the issue is in MHL adapter converting everything into 16:9 format. However, I 'm not sure if this happens because of input resolution (2048x1536) is bigger than 1080p, or it's just something that MHL adapters do. I haven't tried to pass 1024x768 through MHL as my tablet is not rooted, so if someone could try this and see if that works, that would be awesome!
Is there any workaround around this? I guess changing resolution on the tablet to 16:9 would help eliminate the pillarboxing, but content would still be letterboxed. TV itself does not have any zooming capabilities, btw.
Is there maybe some HDMI scaler/converter/whatever device that can zoom the central part of the image to fit the screen or am I pretty much screwed with this TV?
Thanks!

FWIW, i bought one of these http://www.amazon.com/Updated-Versi..._2?ie=UTF8&qid=1456763189&sr=8-2&keywords=mhl and, to my dismay, it outputs to my 16:9 display(s) in the original 4:3 ratio of the tablets screen. I have been trying to find a way of getting it to output 1080p like I want. Do you happen to know if that official samsung MHL adapter outputs 1080p to a HDTV?

It's been a while (some years) since I worked with digital output to CRT, but if memory serves me correct you need a scan converter for a CRT. Monitors would have these built in, but not a 'normal' TV.

[Q]USB to HDMI output only 720*480 resolution?

I just got a USB to HDMI cable, or can be called a MHL cable for my SGSII, but the output resolution was only 720*480(not 800*480, not 1080P, not 1080i) after the phone had been connected to the LCD screen(the screen reported this information).
I tried to set the monitor to "Full Screen" mode, but it just upscaled the image, the resolution still remained at 720*480.
Anyone has any idea about this problem?
BTW, I'm using the SiyahKernel with the stock ZSKI3 ROM.
Thanks!!
Open up the video player, it outputs at max resolution.
It does this because the system UI is running at a low resolution, so it can't output higher.
Like you I was under the distinct impression when I purchased my GS2 that the phone would output 1080p through MHL. Sadly this has not been the case. I was wondering if I was forgetting some setting but based on this thread it appears I'm not.
Wouldn't have been a deal breaker but it's still too bad.

Let's be clear.
The phone DOES output 1080p through the onboard video player. Open up a 1080p video and try it out.
Using the Samsung MHL adapter, I can do 1080i to my 32" Vizio (the only HDMI monitor I have access to). I see this resolution even when not running the video player; i.e. on the main "desktop" and app drawer screens. Of course, that's upscaled, but it still looks pretty good.
The Vizio supports 1080p, but for whatever reason, the MHL adapter won't provide it. I haven't spent a lot of time on this, but maybe I'll take another look at it over the weekend.

I did try the 1080P video playback as soon as I got the MHL, but like I said, the resolotion which the LCD screen reported is only 720*480, no matter in what kind of UI or application.
I had a LG Optimus 2x few months ago, and the HDMI on it worked perfectly with the same LCD screen.
Actually i noticed some interesting things when playing with the MHL. As i got a Samsung P2770HD screen i got basically all the connections. When i plug the phone directly by the HDMI plug screen reports full HD resolution (upscalled ofc, wondering if changing lcd density could give this some smoothness), but when i plug it trough the same cable but with a HDMI-DVI converter on the end the screen reports a lower resolution, phones native one if i remember correctly (which looks actually smooth and not pixelated, but i think there were all the fancy monitor's software enhancements on).

I've got a feeling you got this instead. www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-FT-Generic-Hi...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item2567cc3a59
Excuse me, but at a first glance i dont think such cable could give any output at all, from what i understand of the mhl protocol the signal is different (quoting wikipedia "Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed."). Fortunately we got an easy way to know, Thread starter, does your cable have also the power connection? And do you use it?
I wonder in the Note outputs at 720p?

I see the HDMI output quality very poor
I believe it has to be related to software or cable/monitor hardware, because my stuff gives me full hd resolution. Maybe compatibility issues, as we are using mhl adapters?

what rom are you use ?
Stock, Kies supplied ki4 CF-rooted. Nothing fancy as u can see. Also my screen is a samsung P2770HD, which might be helping. As I posted a page before, I get low resolution when connecting to DVI trough an adaptor.

When I finally get my hdmi - dvi - d-sub converter i'll try to use
Some of the projectors in the university, that might give interesting results. Anyone tried to use better lcd density values to compensate for the upscalling?

HTC One x connection via MHL adapter.

Hi Guys,
I have the one x, Optoma pk301, MHL adapter and the required HDMI cable. Got the connection all set up but I'm unable to get a display on the projector. Are there any settings in the phone that i have to change/switch on to display on an external screen?
Thanks
Mine worked right out of the box. I used a Galaxy SII adapter. As soon as i connected HDMI, charger and phone, it switched to landscape mode and the picture showed up on the tv.
As far as i am aware, there are no settings on the phone to enable/disable MHL.
Did you plug the USB to charge ? It says no power > no video
Im using this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Smart-Adapter-Galaxy-Mobile/dp/B005MR82GA
Its working now. Was displaying a red X before. Didn't do anything other than just unplug and re plug everything
Can you tell me if I play movie on my TV by mhl cable, does it shows external subtitles (.srt)? And, can hox play movie on TV with phone screen of during.

"Micro USB to HDMI® MHL Adapter - Black" - quick review
I just received the MHL adapter from MonoPrice, about $10 US:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8805&seq=1&format=2
The product description implies some phones can power the MHL adapter, with the One X you must supply power via a micro-USB charger. Be forewarned, the load may be a little higher than what some phone chargers can deliver; my EVO 4G charger would shut off after about 10 seconds, an old Nexus One charger worked fine.
Output is 1280x720 60Hz (should auto-adjust to the TV, don't have a PAL display here to confirm this). The Samsung HDTV was set to "Just Scan", meaning no scaling is done by the TV.
The resultant HDTV image is underscanned by about 35 pixels on each side, 20 pixels on top and bottom, resulting in a display area of 1210x680. I think this is a problem with the One X GPU drivers, and not the adapter because I doubt a simple device like this can do any scaling. At CES, I played with a few Transformer Primes running Shadowgun Multiplayer, mirrored to HDTVs at 1280x720, and there was no underscan, so this is likely not be a limitation of Tegra 3 GPU.
I got the red X once (displayed on the TV), afterwards it would not mirror the display to the TV until reset, so the connection handshaking is kinda finicky. I've been plugging the micro-USB power last, after the phone and the HDMI is connected and the phone is powered on. Sense should flip into landscape immediately, if not, something is wrong. If you power on after everything is connected, you should see the lock screen in portrait for a couple seconds, then it'll rotate. Sense works surprisingly well in landscape, I'm surprised that HTC didn't allow this mode without an MHL adapter connected.
There is a slight performance hit on the One X when display mirroring is active:
GLBenchmark 2.1.4, native display:
Egypt Standard: 48 fps
Pro Standard: 54
GLBenchmark 2.1.4, HDMI mirrored:
Egypt Standard: 42 fps
Pro Standard: 52 fps
If you want to demo a One X, play Shadowgun THD on a HDTV, it looks absolutely amazing. You are "playing blind" on a touchscreen, but once you get a feel for turning and shooting (right thumb), it's pretty easy. Ideally, this setup is screaming for a game controller, but I haven't come across a thread about this yet for the One X. Support for analog sticks has been in the OS since 3.1, so the keymapping utilities on the Market shouldn't be necessary, but I need to look into this further.
Note: the images were taken of the HDTV using a point-and-shoot and scaled to 720p, so you can see the degree of underscan (the unfiltered decimation is very visible in the fonts).

The TV is full HD, the phone passes 720p through the adapter, looks like it's a direct mirror.

Everything you see on the phone is mirrored on the TV. If you are watching a movie with subtitles on the phone, you will obviously see them on the TV.
My best experience so far watching 720p & 1080p has been with MX Player, but a lot of people also use Dice and Mobo.
That was not the case with my sgs and tv out and as far as I know with sgs2 tv out via mhl. It's mirroring everything but subtitles.
hi i have two days htc one x and have two hdmi cable to tv but same result no signal what i do wrong i use this one please helpme
I bought a MHL adapter from Mobilefun and I get the phone picture on a my PC monitor, with a little pixel loss as described by rasterX.
However I tried looking at a video I recorded with the HOX. I played the recording using the stock player and MX player.
In both cases, the playback is too fast on HDMI, it's like pushing a fast forward button.
With MX player I tried the different options (hardware/software): hardware is too fast, software is variable: complex pictures are too slow to display, less complex pictures are shown faster but since the display time changes according to the picture, the software playback is useless.
I tried two different PC monitors, one is Philips with a DVI-HDMI adapter, the other a DELL with a direct HDMI input, results are the same for both. I'm in a 50Hz country (France) if ever this can have a side effect...
Anyone has similar issues with MHL?
I tried my Samsung MHL adapter and it worked. My TV resolution is 1366x768.
When I connect all cables (inclusing power of course) I get portrait screen on my TV. As soon as I play movie or game, it goes landscape. When back to homescreen, it's portrait. No issues in Diceplayer or MX Player. Worked in HW and Software. Software mode allows to see subtitles on TV.
Sound only out of one channel
I only seem to be getting audio out of the left channel. I've tried 2 MHL adapters, and 2 different HDMI cables with 2 different TVs.
What's going on!?

Same symptom here!

Htc One X MHL Problems :(

Hey all , just playing around with my One x through MHL and noticed its only outputting at 640x480 @60hz !
It should be 1280x720 at least.
Ive checked on a few screens around my home.
I have this Adapter http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007K8NN9U/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
Anyone else have similar issues?
I wants Full HD's
There should be something wrong either with your MHL adapter or your software, its working pretty well with my ONE X and im getting 720p with no prob...
which adapter do you use ? I might just get a new one!
I use samsung Micro usb to MHL i used to use it with the galaxy note and S2
My girl friends sensation fills my 42" 1080p screen perfectly while outputting via MHL but my ONE X has borders the whole way round. It also does this on a smaller 720p screen.
Guessing its a Tegra issue.

Are you using a HDMI-to-DVI adapter by any chance? During connection handshaking, the phone queries the external display for 1280x720 60Hz, if not found, it will drop down to 640x480. You can use MonInfo the check your televisions's EDID info:
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm
The CE mode IDs are what are being scanned, and you need to be talking to an HDMI port for this.

This is a known problem with One X unfortunately. It's shrinking the output image if the display has overscan modes, rather, it should be checking if the display has underscan modes and output 1:1 by default. I've submitted this issue as a bug to HTC, and am still awaiting a reply from engineering.
I don't believe this is a problem with Tegra, because the Transformer Prime will display full screen when the HDTV is configured for 1:1.
Ah thanks for the info. I'll will also mention this to them. Hope a fix comes out as its a PITA.
I'm also noticing that the image is broken up in to lots of mini squares when playing MKV. Perhaps this is MK player rather then MHL adapter. Anyone else noticed this?
The small squares look like bad image scaling , there almost overlapped. Circles look jagged etc

Quick question regarding micro usb to hdmi

Hey guys, my phone has the tv catch up app which displays all my TV shows in HD but on my TV it's not in HD and I'm using an ariel because I don't have satellite in my room. My question is if I got my phone hooked up to the TV with a micro usb to hdmi will it display full 1080p on my TV? and can somebody tell me exactly what I'll need cause I'm not 100% sure, I know you need a mhl adapter or something and that's about it
1080i Only, and 1080P movies dont look as good as my media box, they look more pixelated and a bit of frameskipping or slowdown (not that noticeable but bothers the viewing a bit).
Maybe would be different if the device output was 1080P (My TV and monitor are 1080P and on both is 1080i i can get)
But for games and 720P (or less) movies the speed is perfect

[Q] Smart Dock MHL HDMI output Resolution

Hi,
I have a Note 8 on 4.1.2 with Samsung Smart Dock, There are a few questions i would like to ask if anyone has experience of this combination.
1: Screen output to TV, its seems its outputting 1280x800 therefore i get a little chopped off at the top and black bars down the sides in landscape, Nearly full screen but not quite. Videos will play full screen though, just games and android desktop/apps seem to have this chopping off effect. Is this normal ?
TV's i have tried are all 1080p and 720p and a 2560x1600 Dell monitor.
2: Anyway to make 4.2.2 work with Dock ? it only charges
3: Extension cable - I have purchased a 20cm 11pin female to male cable so i can sit the Note outside the dock in landscape. Nothing is recognised using this. I know there is an app to force rotation but i feel safer placing it in landscape with a Moko case.
Would i be right in assuming the Dock is 11pin connector ? and the note 8 11pin also ?.
4: Anyway of editing the default keyboard layout without rooting ? MelE F10Pro needs a few default keys changing.
Advanced apology if this should be posted in Accessories sub
Thanks in advance

I don't know about the Smart Dock, but I do have the MHL to HDMI adapter.
Your monitor or TV must have the ability to do a smart sync or have options to allow for vertical and horizontal size adjustment.
As for the wired HDMI, you will need to plug in the Samsung charger into the dock (it should have a USB connection), and use a good quality 6ft / 1.6m HDMI cable.
My Samsung TV has a hidden HDMI feature for PC input. You must use the HDMI source that has a PC DB15 input associated with it. In my case HDMI 3 input, and go into the menu for input label and change it to PC. Once that is done, you will have the ability to adjust the TV and should note that the image may have a blank unused area for a boarder (picture frame) around the image.
The maximum resolution is 1280x800 but the kicker is the app and the resolution of the tablet itself. All 1080i will be converted to 1280x800 maximum. I got tired of cabling, and ended up getting a mid priced HDMI dongle which allows miracast. They are both compatible for picture image. Just there is a distance and bandwidth limitation with wireless, so you must have a good signal and proper connection speeds to maintain high bandwidth to the dongle.
