Camera corrupts pics/vids when storing to SD card - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I take pics/videos and the camera is set to store to the SD card, it will often corrupt the images. The bad part is that the thumbnails that it shows in the camera viewer are fine, but when you use Gallery or any other apps to view them, they are corrupted. I 'solved' it a while ago by saving to the internal storage, but occasionally it will revert to SD card storage and I'll loose pics until i notice!
First question- are the corrupted files recoverable?
Next, is there a fix? Just random answers showed up on Google- usual factory resets/wipes which are iffy and temporary.
Or, is there a way to keep the camera set to internal storage?
It's just <expletive deleted> to buy a phone with the best camera on the market and then not to be able to rely on it. I've lost so many irreplaceable shots It's EMBARRASSING to show up with the best camera and leave with the worst (zero) pics, or have people ask you to use your fancy camera for their priceless shots and then later have to tell them their memories are lost.
The current card is a Samsung 64GB EVO Class 10, but I've tried 2 other ones.

I would be so upset if this would happen to me, I understand how you feel.
Sorry to be the one bringing the bad news but recovering/repairing the corrupted files would be really hard (I tried it with some corrupted photos I had a year ago).
In my case the photos were accidentally deleted then recovered with recovery software.
I just recently got my G4 and I didn't try yet saving any photos on the SD card.
How often does it happen for you? Every 10, 100 pics? Totally random?
Have you always had this problem? Is your phone rooted, unlocked, have you done any changes like that to it?
What you can try is activate the option to save the RAW files along with the .JPG so maybe one of the 2 files would survive.
Then you can check and delete the RAW files if the .JPG files are ok.
Wiping the phone with a factory reset would be another thing I would try.
As a last resort, send the phone to LG for servicing. Hope you find a solution.

Generally when it does it, it corrupts them all, so you lose ALL the pics from that event or whatever, not just a few. Just to make a liar out of me, today when i tested it, it did 1 good, 1 bad, then 4 good.
It was 'fixed' for a while after the initial incident as i simply didn't put an SD card in it. Until I put in one about a week ago, then at some point the camera started writing there and I didn't notice until a day later after I went to upload some pics from a party the night before.
It was a stock phone when it happened, but last night I rooted it to attempt to recover the thumbnails (they seem vary large as you can zoom in pretty far), I looked for them but couldn't fine them when unrooted. They weren't in the .thumbnails folder nor any other place I looked so thouth they must be in some protected folder that required root. But from the rooting or time passed, the thumbnails disappeared from the camera.
Wiping may fix it for a while, but I don't know if it comes back. It's not unique to me, according to Google, but those that have wiped say it starts corrupting again. And the thing is, they look fine in the camera app so the only way to tell is if you switch from camera to gallery or another pic app.
I wouldn't mind shooting in RAW but RAW only works in some manual modes, another big disappointment.
I was thinking of switching camera apps but it's not clear if the other apps support things like the laser focusing.
I bought it from ebay so not sure about the warranty, and if they'll do anything with an intermittent problem. They'll probably take one good pic and call it good

It is always better to save the photos/ videos in phone memory and copying them to memory card in regular basis.so you are swtting internal storage but still it is going to memory card after some time?
is the setting in stock camera app is really changing to memory card in settings?

Didn't quite get that, but I set the stock app to internal and it has switched to external SD. I haven't intentionally changed it to SD, but I can't say for 100% that it wasn't an accidental button press. If it was an accident or bug, net result is the same- at some point I start loosing pics and don't find out about it until later.

I do not use the LG gallery app as I don't like how it is sharpening the photos. I always use Quickpic, it's better, way faster and free.
Have you tried a factory reset or reflash an original LG OS image if you are rooted?
Maybe your phone has a hardware problem, can you call LG and ask what your options are?
What is the exact model of your phone? What are the 1st 3 digits of your S/N?
LG phones made from June to August are prone to the boot loop problem, maybe this is something else...

I'd love to help you. But without any punctuation, its hard to decipher what you are trying to say. What ROM are you using?
Riding the Uni on the GSIII
the phone is completely stock. I got it from my sister who is currently using a galaxy 3s. She said she had to much datta that why she went to get the 3s . Since i have had the phone some times it lags to comeback to home screen also the phone is not saving the pictures to the sd card or the phone. If i take out the sd card the phone will not take picture unless have the card installed . I really want to fix the picture issue and wonder why its lagging

Lol great reply! @op try to wipe all user data from the phone. This will not erase anything on your card. On your SD card you will look for a file using astro, es file explorer, or whatever file explorer you wish, called dcim. That is where your pictures should be stored. If you find them in a different directory, move them to dcim and they will show in gallery. But do a factory data reset, that should help with your lagging and also help you get signed into instagram.

Pictures randomly became corrupt

Hi guys,
So the other day i go into the Gallery app and notice the photos that have been taken by the camera appear to be corrupt.
It is strange because it appears that the most recent pictures are viewable but majority of the older ones are not. All other album folders that i have created are fine.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so were you able to restore those images through the phone?
I'm sure if I connect the MicroSD card to a pc and use data recovery tools i can still retrieve them. I just find it kind of odd that it only happened to one particular album.
Images are being saved to a Sandisk MicroSD card.
Please see photos of what im referring to.
i've had 2 Sandisk microSD cards fail on me before. I read somewhere that sandisk cards is more prone to failure in samsung phones. Pity because my sandisk CF cards for my camera all work flawlessly. I went with Samsung 64GB cards. Last time they were on sale at amazon for pretty cheap.
It did that with a video of mine but it became normal a bit later. Kinda strange.
i had a similar thing happen to me and I had to format the extsd and it fixed whatever the issue was.
I'm having the exact same issue!
I just moved my SD card over from my note 3. Was working fine on that phone. Pictured look corrupt at random now but may appear back later on.
I'm gonna try backing up all my stuff and formatting.
Ya i find that very unusual. From my experience with external storage, when it becomes corrupt, most times all content is not readable. I guess im just going to have to do data recovery on the corrupt files, format it and transfer them back on to.
Same issue here. Noticed this a few weeks ago (2 or 3) and just deleted the blank images. Hasn't come up since then but I'll keep monitoring it.
Had this happen without the sd card...
Strongly suggest you hard reset if it happens on the device.
I had that happen on an SD card once and then ultimately everything got corrupted. Copy everything off it, Format it and copy back on.

SD card stopped writing

So this started Friday morning but I didn't know what the issue was. I use my SD card for caching music from my All Access Google Play music subscription, and I was actually streaming non-downloaded music at the time, and everything stopped working, and I kept getting errors about not being able to download. Didn't think much of it. Did the standard Routine, reboot, didn't work, so I cleared cache and uninstalled updates on play music and the service was working again and I didn't think about it again until I tried to take a picture later in the evening and got this in the gallery instead of the picture
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3418912&d=1437899706
Again I just did the standard stuff, rebooted, cleared cache and data to the gallery and camera app, but this time nothing was working. I finally decided to change my save location from my SD to my internal storage, and my pictures started saving again. So I connected the dots to what happened with Google Play Music earlier in the day, and checked my downloads, and nothing was downloaded anymore, option to save to SD was grayed out. Naturally I tried to format with the card in the phone, and it acted like it worked ok, but still showed I only had 11gb left of space, and still wouldn't work with anything. So I stuck it in my PC, and windows errors every time I try to format it. I tried with the default windows 8 formatting tool, I've tried with third party tools, same thing, won't format. Card appears to be read only now. How does this happen? It's the free 32GB card I got from LG with the extra battery and charging case I got for buying a G4 before June 30th. In fact I've only had this SD card for maybe a month. Is this some lolipop permissions keeping me from formatting it or is it hosed? I remember reading something about Google changing permissions on the SD with kitkat, but I also read they changed back with lolipop. I also read that LG didn't seem to notice they changed back and kept things the way they were with kitkat. If that's the case how do I take ownership of the whole card so I can format it?

I have no idea of the answer yet but if I find one I'll let you know. But this has happened to 3 different micro sd cards in my LG G4! I don't think it's an android issue I think it's an LG g4 issue. But I'm going to investigate further. Brand new sd cards working fine for a few days then rendered read only and unable to format even on a laptop!
This literally just happened to my 32gb card received with the bundle. Any update?
I had the same issue with a A-Data 128GB UHS-U1. After a month of usage it wouldn't mount on my phone. After trying to format via various means (Disk Management, Partition Magic, SD Formatter) I found my card was set to read-only and nothing would change that. I've had very good experiences with A-Data before so I chalked it up to a manufacturing defectand filed a RMA on the lifetime warranty. Ive got a spare 16GB popped in to see if it's the phone doing it (Also A-Data)., I hope its not the G4 because I love the phone. But if it is I'm not wasting another SD Card and buying another phone.
Sounds like a corrupt sd card somehow.
I have the same issue with a SanDisk 200GB Card as discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/phone-upside-screen-off-t3227335
So it's the G4 that is killing the cards?
It's one of 2 things: Either manufacturing defects (which seems more likely) Or a G4 issue (In this case I would expect the issue to be more widespread then the low number of posts). The solution for some seems to be repartitioning the SD card, in my case though it reverts back even after the partitioning, SD Formatter indicates its stuck in read only.
It can also be some of the cards don't work well with the heat the G4 generates. On mines, it doesn't indicate read only but it seems I can't format or write to the card but I can delete from the card fine... I just tried SD Formatter and it basically shows what's attached, I thought only full size SD cards had the write protect switch, is there any software that can make the card write protected or not?

That's the exact same error message I got with SD Formatter, You could try with using partitioning software to see if that works, it was a no go for me. Regarding the heat, that could be an issue too, compared to my previous phone, the G4 runs really hot.
Any Partition software you recommend at it seems MiniTool Partition Wizard doesn't recognize etxfs as a filesystem. The G4 does run pretty hot, so much for the claims of the cards claiming to be resistant to everything...
I did try the Windows Disk Management Tool, but even that can't fix it. Well to be fair, no phone runs as hot as the G4 from my experience, guess LG still makes crap...
Has anyone tried the sd card fix floating around the g4 forum...it's posted at least once in the threads by micromod777 in tmo g4 forum...also to those with unlocked bl have you tried formatting in twrp?
Happened to me too. (SD from promo) I had to replace it. Nothing can be done about it. SD is trashed.

LG aka Lucky Goldstar had always been a low-end brand. The only reason I've switched from Motorola is because of the microSD slot and the removeable battery. Samsung's are more for looks too..

Got a link to the sd card fix?
Some good news, A-Data notified me that they be replacing my micro-sd no strings attached. Sad news is that I'm tried of hardware issues on Android devices. I considered the Moto X Pure and the Nexus 6P, but being a Canadian, I'm getting royally shafted by exchange rates, ended up getting an iPhone 6s.
Same exact issue here with the 32gb card I received free from the promo.
I got ahold of LG and they replaced it. I bought a much nicer sandisk uhs 64gb card while I waited and when the replacement came I put it in the wife's gs5, that was 3 months ago and it's still working so hopefully it'll continue to work

The replacement SanDisk 200GB MicroSD card I put in on October 30, 2015 had problems on November 17, 2015.

I really think there was something wrong with the previous firmwares. My play music would wipe at least once a month and reading off the card was always sluggish. Ever since the 81010o update everything is fine, and I can take my card out and reinsert it and play music won't delete my music. Unfortunately I believe the previous firmwares were killing cards too

SD card not read by apps in some cases..

Hey guys -
An issue I've been having since I jumped up to CM13, was wondering if anyone could point me at things to check.
Searching, doesn't look like others have had this issue, so..
I'll also note that it's *possible* this issue existed in Viper (before CM13 was finally useable), but that was a while back, and I can't remember clearly.
In either case, some apps can't seem to read the SD card.
Examples - The built-in Gallery. No matter where I have the camera app save pics (Internal or SD), the Gallery won't report any images being found.
Another example is my live wallpaper, which pans and changes backgrounds. In it's settings, I can easily select the directory on the SD card that has the images, but when it starts, it can't display any of the files, reporting that the directory could not be read.
The card is 32Gb, and the issue continued after backing everything up, and re-formating card in phone. (And then copying everything back over.)
So was wondering what else I should take a look at. (Permissions, etc?)
Cheers -
Mike
Faulty sd card for what so ever reason...
Sent from quite brutal hTc 10 ..
Tried a different card this morning - formatted it in-phone, and copied over docs from old SD card (using PC as intermediary), same thing. Wondering if it's some permission thing or something on a folder/mount point.
Apparently I'm the only one having the issue, though, so maybe it's something I've done to my phone. Grr.

All my pictures were deleted but only from SD card

:crying: like the title says. Literally every other file on my phone is intact... but all my pictures were deleted only from my SD Card, man this has me stressed. I take a ton of photos and my last backup was 2 weeks ago
Can someone help me investigate this? TBH I'm not sure what happened. the last time i saw my pictures were several hours ago. I'm running android 7.0 if that matters on leedroid. I installed simple gallery app, deleted about 40 pics and that was that. I could still see the rest of my pics. fast forward a few hours later, I go looking for a folder in my DCIM folder with pics from my nexus 6p and non of my micro sd cards pictures are there. they are all done.
so far i've mounted my the 10 as mass storage via TWRP and ran recuva on the card searching for pictures with deep scan mode. makes this mystery more interesting is it found only 3 files! if you know anything about PCs if something is deleted it should still be present right? b/c it's not really deleted yet.
Sorry mate that I don't have a solution that you haven't tried. I know it doesn't help now, but I use the Mega app with a free 50GB account to back up my pictures and videos automatically when I'm on WiFi.
Good luck, I hope you find a way.
There are Android apps for recovery too - I doubt if they would help better than Recuva and I don't know any in particular to suggest. Also I don't know if you'd have better luck on the PC with the card mounted directly instead of via MTP but it's definitely worth a try.

Just tried card mounted with recuva and deep scan. also tried photorec.
what's strange is recuva found a ton of deleted files but it cannot find my pictures from DCIM folder. not even in poor or unrecoverable state..... something is fishy about that.

I wouldn't read too much into that. To be fair, be vigilant as well but it doesn't mean anything suspicious is going on. Although I haven't had this happen on my HTC 10 yet, on my previous four Android phones my MicroSD cards would sometimes become corrupted or lose files even when I'm not writing anything to them.
One time on the LG G3 (and this is really bizarre) just flashing a TOT (LG provided stock ROM file on the PC) wiped my MicroSD completely, and I had flashed TOTs hundreds of times on both my LG phone and tablet without that happening. Just pointing out that without further evidence, the loss of the files themselves doesn't necessarily mean anything other than the general relative unreliability of MicroSD cards compared to internal storage technology.

I see what you mean but just trying to figure out the point of failure. Can't have this happen so still thinking to see what went wrong... unless it was SD failure of some sort.
