ouya controller any good? with the touchpad, does it work? - Shield Android TV Accessories

anyone now if this works>

Yes, it works very well. I use the Ouya controller every time I need to emulate a mouse. Only some Geforce Now games won't recognize it well.

I can't get my OUYA controller to pair with the Shield TV. Did you have to do anything special? Mine just has the two middle lights blinking and the Shield is in pairing mode, but nothing.

Can anyone else verify that theirs works or doesn't work? I have two OUYA controllers and neither will connect to the Shield.
I finally got one to connect, but some of the buttons react differently than one would expect they should.

on my shield tv both of my two ouya controllers work pretty well for the basic system input. but some games seem to have problems with it.
it helps to put the file with the keylaouts in "system/usr/keylayout" but not in every case.
someone else should post a link to the keylayouts file (Vendor_2836_Product_0001.kl) because i am not authorized to do this. or you look it up in google

The file can be found here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9mcZwWJuSpBRjNqRDVvWlhNOWs/edit

Got my Ouya controller to pair, copied over kl file, changed perms to 644, rebooted but still gamepad testers are showing that it's incorrectly mapped. Oddly the same keys are mapped with or without the kl file.
Anyone else have this problem?

Pairing a PS3 BD remote

I picked up a PS3 BD remote to use with XBMC on the ouya but cant get it to pair.
I set it to be discovered and it asks for a PIN. I enter 0000 and get "Pairing rejected by BD remote"
any help is appreciated.

I'll second this request. I bought a couple of generic PS3 controllers and also cannot get them to pair. I've been through the whole connect via USB, disconnect, restart routine and they still won't pair. The controllers *do* work while attached via USB.
I also see the bluetooth driver and have tried the recommended 0000 and 1234 pins to no avail.
I've seen notes elsewhere that only true Sony PS3 controllers will work with the Ouya. Is this the case?
Well, found my controller. Guess it's called a sixaxis controller. Info here about how to get it working:
OuyaForum
But you need to root your Ouya, sideload a special app which takes over bluetooth and it apparently blocks the regular Ouya controller.
Sigh. Nothing is ever easy.

This is a play station remote, not a controller. I got it for $7 and figured i would give it a shot. The ouya is frustrating in and of itself as i bought it as an XBMC box but the AppleTV1 sitting next to it works better then the ouya.
I ordered a Mele F10 in the hopes that works well and i can finally turn the Ouya in a nice XBMC box.

I apologize for hijacking your thread then. I thought we were talking about the same thing. It's clear from the OuyaForum thread that there is a whole universe of add-ons that do not easily work with the Ouya.

No worries and no need to apologize. I think a few solutions work for getting generic PS3 remotes working on the Ouya but I haven't seen any for the PS3 BD remote. Well, i saw one on xbmchub but it was convoluted at best and needed to be done on a regular basis. It doesn't seem worth the work to get a $7 remote working.

[Q] Navigating CyonogenMod

Just went through the directions and successfully updated CWM and installed the boot menu. Took a few tries to get CyanogenMod to boot up but once I wiped the user data and reinstall it booted up fine.
Question, is the OUYA controller useless once in CyanogenMod? Do I need a keyboard/mouse to use it properly? What is the fan favorite for devices to replace the awkward controller?
Thanks.

This. I can't type from my OUYA remote to the onscreen keyboard. I've searched to find a way to enable this feature and couldn't find anything that would. I would think adding OUYA Remote as an input device might do it (Keyboard & Input in CM Settings) But, there is no option to access it.
I tried dl'ing Six Axis and it got late so I wasn't able to mess with it too much, but, it didn't seem like it was going to work. Essentially, I just want to be able to select the letters of the onscreen keyboard with the Ouya controller. Has anyone had better luck?
I have really retired my OUYA controller. Multi port USB hub with a USB keyboard, for recovery work, wireless mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard are my choices. I don't much care for games so this is just an HTPC for me. XBMC, Pandora, some weather apps, Facebook and tumblr. I haven't even tried the controller with any android games. Does it work in that respect?
Sent from my LG-LS720 using xda app-developers app
Ive not actually tried it. It Navigates ok with wireless xbox 360 controller, so I`d guess its ok. Seriously, get a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse, for pref, not a bluetooth one but one with a dongle. Bought mine for £15 and its a joy to use. Browsing on a nice big TV is awesome.
You need to manually link the ouya controller in the blue tooth setting menu. Put the controller into discovery more than select find BT devices. You only need to do this once

Amazon Fire TV Stick and the PS4 Controller

Has anybody else had any luck pairing a PS4 controller with the Amazon Fire TV Stick? I saw that with the Amazon Fire TV you hold share and power, and you can then pair them. On the Stick everything seems to go about the same, except then it says 'Unable to pair' when you select Wireless Controller.
Hey i'm having the same problem. I don't have the Fire TV but have read something similar to what you said. If you figure out a method plz let me know.

I tried sideloading Android's settings.apk - and even then it was a no go. Maybe part of their plan of selling it for $20 was counting on some sales of the $40 controller, so they don't want us using other controllers with it anymore.

I also tried with the settings apk. My problem was that the controller would not even show up in the Settings.apk Bluetooth menu. On the other hand, it showed up in the Bluetooth controllers options but did not connect.
Other people have had success connecting the Ouya controller thus I think its not that they don't want ANY 3rd party controllers, its just that the Bluetooth driver and/or hardware they're using is different than the Fire TV. Which is really sad because the ONLY reason I bought the Fire TV stick was because I read PS4 controller works out of the box with FireTV.
Same issue for me and I'm really bummed. Any other things to try besides the settings.apk? I have a feeling this is a cut cost hardware issue.
same issue
I have just spoken with amazon and according to them the PS4 controller is not compatible. I too saw an youtube video where someone was able to pair it, if anyone has a solution to this issue please let me know, I really don't want to wait for the playpad pro that is optimazied for amazon since its back ordered
I finally got it to pair, but the performance is pretty terrible, you can see the process here: http://youtu.be/jF3ExA3qzbc (no root required) to keep this from being a 'shameless plug' I'll post the brief instructions, so you can skip the video if you want.
'adb shell' into your fire stick
Get your mac address with this command: settings get secure bluetooth_address
Download and install sixaxisPairToolSetup-0.3.0
Connect your controller via usb to your pc, run the tool, and change the master address to your fire stick's address
Put your dualshock4 in pairing mode and scan for bluetooth controllers with your fire stick
As soon as "wireless controller" shows up on the list DO NOT SELECT IT.
Turn off your controller by holding the (ps) button
Select "wireless controller" on your fire stick
Turn back on the controler
It should now be connected, and it will be greyed out in the list.
if it did not connect try the pairing process again, but this method worked for me on the first try.
[/LIST](the youtube video is more detailed, and has all the links, but with this post and a quick google search, you should be able to find everything you need)
(this is a copy of a redit post I made, but I just put it here, so you can find it as well)

I don't believe so, the ds4 acts as a generic bluetooth controller,
the ds3/sixaxis dose not.
but feel free to try, I do not have any with me at the time, so I can not check.
have there been any updates to this? the Settings.apk is not working for me, it closes out when I attempt attach a bluetooth controller. I am trying to connect my ps4 controller through bluetooth for a lag free experience. So far after connecting it I get a ton of lag on the controller.
the steps given by BOBdotEXE in this thread worked for me it even works the main amazon screen too its not working for all games but seems ok with the emulators though

my lag isnt that bad at all tbh, i can play sonic 1 no problems, i can play nintendo emulator no problems, i think the lag may be due to the distance from the stick to the controller, my distance is about 2 metres from the stick maybe just over, if you live in a BIG house with over 5 metre distance then yes there would obviously be lag
If you need an alternative controller I have a thread for that Here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/aftv2-best-compatible-apps-accessories-t3269267
I haven't managed to get the ds4 paired via Bluetooth as yet but whilst trying I connected it to a powered usb hub which is connected to the stick which is rooted and has OTG enabled.
It worked immediately wired.
As soon as I pulled the cable though the stick rebooted. But if your desperate, rooted and have an OTG cable you can connect your ds4 to you fire stick.
FYI My old wired xbox 360 (afterglow) didn't work when that was connected.
Hello all. Sorry to bump this ancient thread but its the first google result when looking for help. So i had problems using my ps4 controller on my firetv myself as it appears amazon has cut support for game controllers on firetv. Lucky enough there is an easy fix.
Simply download and install Easy Fire Tools onto a smartphone.
Easy Fire Tools - Apps on Google Play
Install your favorite apps on FireTv and other android devices
play.google.com
Then download and install Bluetooth Pair
Bluetooth Pair - Apps on Google Play
Bluetooth pairing - automated. Simply turn on Bluetooth and connect!
play.google.com
Then just sideload Bluetooth Pair app to firetv and use it to connect to game controller.
This method works to where you dont need to pair the remote every time you want to use with firetv. Simply turn on and it will connect.
Cheers!
I'm having the same issue. Although I do not own a Fire TV, I have read something that sounds similar to what you have described. Please let me know if you come up with a solution.

After seeing this thread, I found one in my area on sale for about 12 bucks. After it charges, I will try it out on the fire stick, and come back and report. The controller has a built in mouse function that you activate with the flip of a switch. So, if the fire tv stick can pick up the controller on bluetooth, then in theory it might work. I'll be back later with findings.

Yes, a Gamestop up the road from me had two left. I have the setting.apk succesfully installed as well, so as soon as the thing charges up, I will give it a go. And if it does not work...oh well, just 12 bucks. I will say that I have read reports of a few wireless bluetooth mouses working with the setting.apk as well. Sadly, I do not know the brands, and I have tried a few mouse apps on my android phone via bluetooth, but since they are asking for a pin, it does not seem to work. Any bluetooth device that asks for a pin it seems, is destined to fail.

Yeah... It's hit and miss.. Make sure you do charge it at least 2-3 hours.. I think 2 hours is the recommended time.. Guess you can test it out with stock FW on the remote. But there is a way to convert all Nyko remotes to the FireTV FW. Called to put a couple aside. Just in case they work..
Also please let us know how the controller feels for playing games. I know it won't be as good as any console controllers but for $13 as long as they don't break down to quickly they should be fine..

The Nyko gamepad mouse function works on the Fire TV stick. Do not try and connect the controller through the Fire TV stick settings, do it through the setting menu from the setting.apk. Make sure the controller is on (had it set to gamepad mode), then click the option that allows you to search for bluetooth compatible devices under bluetooth settings. It should pick it up pretty easily. Once it is selected and setup, change the gamepad to mouse mode, and then you can use the apps that require the touch/mouse function. Right now, I am running a sideloaded directtv app.
After I load a game, I'll come back with more intel, but the Nyko gamepad works like a charm so far.

Awesome... Will wait for your gaming feedback... I went ahead & put a few on hold for 48 hours... Since most stores in my area only have 1 in store. Thanks to their Holidays Return Policy we got until Jan. 15 to return. If anything is defective or one does not like it. But wonder what will they do since they not longer will carry them. Hopefully Refund. But I hope they are good enough... Should be great to get 3 of the Nyko's for the price of one of the Amazon controllers.. And that is with extra features.
I myself will be trading in a bunch of games I've put off trading in. So I should be able to get 3-4 for just the trade-in credits.

This app works great for Showbox, Popcorntime, browsers, it has mouse mode. Only thing missing is qwerty keyboard, but I just switch over to fire remote app when that is needed.

Interesting app... You just have to know your FTV's IP to tell them apart. The app needs more complete translation of it. Odd how it installs itself on the FTV.. But easy... The go back button doesn't seem to work on most instances. Just ended hitting home. Since I do have root on my FTV's.. It did kept asking me to grant it SuperSU status.. Not sure why.. I Denied it... Probably will still go with the Nyko Game Pad Pro but this is a good backup.. But I don't trust it just yet... Uninstalled it for now...

Alright, as far as I can tell, it is impossible to root the fire tv stick as of yet. Hopefully someone comes up with a way. I'll just drop some instructions from the beginning and add a few resources for people starting fresh. I uploaded the settings.apk I used, so be sure to grab that from this post. Before I get too far into this, everything I have done is with a stock Fire TV stick and Nyko gamepad controller straight out of the box, and anything done to the fire stick is listed below.
On the fire tv stick, make sure under settings that the adb debugging and allowing outside apps are enabled. As for getting the settings.apk to the stick itself, just follow the instructions found here: sideloadfiretv.com/sideload-apps-amazon-fire-tv-windows/
(Being a new user, I cannot link that, so I apologize for the inconvenience)
Once that is loaded, go to Settings>Applications>Manage Installed Applications. Find the settings app, launch it, and go to the bluetooth menu option. Click it, and up at the top right hand corner, you will see an option that will allow you to search for bluetooth devices. Make sure that the nyko remote is charged, turned on, and set in the gamepad function before clicking that option. Once you have the gamepad set up, click the option to search for bluetooth devices, it may take a minute. Once it picks it up, enable it in the menu, and you should be good to go.
I did not change any functions on the controller itself. This is the stock Nyko gamepad controller straight out of the box. You will be able to switch it back and forth between the controller and mouse functions, and both work. The only thing I have found is that when entering user names and passwords on apps, keep the stick remote next to you, as it is generally easier to use that to enter the names/passwords/etc. I have successfully navigated and watched stuff from the DirecTv, Funimation (though this app is still a little funky to navigate, it works), and Xfinity sideloaded apps.
As far as games, my kids are playing Sonic 2 with the controller currently, and there are no issues with it. It works great. Just remember to turn it on and off when using it and not using it, since it has a chargeable battery.
Sorry Y314K, I am sure that this is far more more information that you originally wanted/needed, but I figured I better start from the beginning, so newbies reading this will have all the tools they need to make it work.
Hope this helps!

Phone as a mouse, FireTV Stick?

Is it possible to run a program like droidmote without root, to control the sideloaded apps with touch features?
Also trying to get a bluetooth Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 to connect. Installed Settings.apk. Can detect it, but can't pair it.

Not true anymore. Try this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkremote.client.en
Has some translation issues (seems to be a Chinese app). Install on your phone and when you open it and connect it will automatically install the client on your ftv (or at least it did on my rooted box with play store access). Seems to have both navigation controls and mouse mode. Worked well for me in my ftv (have not tried on ftv sticks yet, mine won't be here until Tuesday).

I'm pretty weary of Chinese apps.
How are you using remote ime? This is only thing i could find in under that name. http://www.mygica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9&p=9
Tried scanning and manually entering ip and nothing.
Don't know about the Chinese app, doesn't look like it has a touchpad feature for using it as a pointer for touch controls that fire stick remote can't do. Joystick an option even though the stick isn't a game machine. Wantd to use something i already have if possible.
I haven't had any luck connecting anything Bluetooth. Monoprice Bluetooth headphones and sound brick show as detected but never play audio. Mouse detects but doesn't pair.
That Nyko gamepad works perfectly (as a gamepad and as a mouse), and if you go to the game controllers part of Settings you'll see Amazon mentions Nyko specifically, that controller is fully supported from the factory on the Fire Stick.

The Chinese app definitely can function as a mouse. Press the square in the upper right corner and select mouse module.

Keep in mind I'm talking about the stick, there is no root for it yet. At least not a software root. If I had root, could install droidmote.

I get my fire TV sticks tonight so I will be testing it out. On my fire TV I didn't have to do anything but open the app on my phone and it displayed the ip of my ftv. When I selected it it installed the server automatically on the ftv.

Has anyone been able to get mouse clicks to work with WKremote, the chinese app, on the Fire TV Stick? I have no problem getting a mouse pointer and I'm able to move it around, but not able to click on anything. I've tried placing the pointer on the object i want to click on, then switching to gesture mode but that doesn't seem to work either.
I'm trying to use it on the Time Warner app and I need to be able to click different options. I also tried to click on something in XBMC with no luck.
Any suggestions?

Works fine for me. Just tap the screen while in mouse mode. I think the fire can be somewhat finicky on what you can click on when in the amazon interface

Thanks. I figured thats how it should be working, but it wasn't for me. I'll try reinstalling it again to see if that does anything.
Is there an app for iOS folks. Dont see Wukong ?
Issues connecting to FireTV Stick
Anyone else having problems connecting to the FireTV Stick. When I open up the app it will search and see the FireTV and shows the correct IP, when I click it to connect it shows fail to initialize and brings me to some help section ( that clearly I do not understand)
Any info would be nice, perhaps there is an issue with the router I am using, uPnP is disabled or something? I just received my new router recently belkin ac1200 and I am not sure if that is the cause.
The Wukon app works for me on the FireTV Stick, but it's super slow. Mouse is jumpy, and inputs are sometimes delayed by 2-3 seconds.
I didn't install anything on the stick to support it, it just worked.
I am interested in how it works more if anyone has any English resources. Pretty cool how it puts up a notification on the FireTV Stick.
