[Q] Which CryanogenMod version should I use? - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Hi all,
i need to reinstall my android phone (Galaxy W I8150) due to an error with google play. I'm currently running android 2.3.6 I8150XXLMI. While researching how to reset my phone i found CryanogenMod and this forum. Despite some basic knowledge on windows OS and how to reset them even after 4h of research im quite lost with the different possibilitys and methodes.
1) If i want to install CM which version should i use? (10, 11, 12.1?) Are there any advantages/disadvantages to the versions.
2) Is there a tutorial video you can recomend? I found several but as a complete newb in android moding, i can't judge how trustworthy they are.
Thanks in advance
Chris

I think that no one will answer you, so as fellow beginner user I'll write you a few suggestions.
There is an overview of i8150 ROMs which could be useful for you choosing one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-w/development#romList
A few months ago I also decided to switch from factory installed to custom ROM, and very easily I got into troubles (soft bricked phone, here is my current situation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-w/help/bricked-dead-upload-stock-rom-odin-t3294141). There are several MUST DO points in that process, so be very careful not to miss one, and be very cautious. Some ROMs are not compatible with some recoveries. There are several guides here which should be red first, so take your time, be patient. One of starting guides is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941028
And, stick to the i8150 guides/Q&A, you can learn there a lot about device specific issues.
Good luck!

The most confusing part about all of these is when you google. Why? Because you get all sorts of correct, wrong, out-of-date and downright useless, etc answers.
4h of research? I probably spent a lot more than 4 days. (so Ok, I'm slow ...).
With the latest apps, 2.3.6 is no longer usable. I jumped to 4.4.4 Kitkat, CM 11. There's some improvement in CM11, but it's also laggy as heck in other areas. An stability is also a question. YMMV. I installed an app to schedule reboot daily, and that helped noticeably. That kept going for a while, but the lagging problem became worse as I installed, and uninstalled, more apps.
Then I tried CM12. Guess what, gapps doesn't work. I don't care about all the other Gapps, but without Google Play, the smart-phone is useless.
And I went back to CM11. I suspect if you use only the basic apps and features, and make/receive phone calls/emails/whatsapp, it should work fine. So should CM10 and CM12. (without Google apps)
But I've also decided, I'm going to get a new phone.

Thanks, that helped a lot
anyone tried CM10?

[Q] HTC Desire A8181 - Need to restore to Factory Defaults

Hi all,
Firstly, I would like to say thanks to all of the devs providing such a wide array of optional extras, rooting, themes, ROM's etc.
Recently, I purchased HTC Desire from portagadgets - $455.00 AUD delivered/unlocked. I am VERY happy with the purchase! One VERY annoying thing that is preloaded on my phone is some muslim praying app called Al-Moazin, iQuran, Arabic keyboard. When I first started the phone the only languages available were English Arabic and some other. Thank god they've included at least one English! At first, I thought, ah well, I can live with this, but, it was very embarrassing when the phone started that praying app by itself at work (even that the phone was on vibrate only). Boy, was that stupid or what. Then I started having a look around and found this forum.
Now, I am one of the people that respects forum rules and have been forum member of Doom9 for almost 10 years
So far I have learned that in order for me to remove these apps, I will have to "root" my phone and /or reload ROM, right?
I use Linux MiNT 10 and Windows 7. I would prefer to use Linux, but if Windows is needed to perform any of the tasks, that would not be a problem.
Unrevoked seems to be the way to go as far as I can tell.
All I want to do is to restore the phone to factory defaults without "those" apps. I like the Sense UI and I would like to keep it default a for now. As soon as the 2.3 becomes available I will update.
Does that mean the I would need to "root" the phone or download RUU official for HTC Desire or what?
Here are the phone details:
Android Version:
2.2
Baseband Version:
32.49.00.U_5.11.05.27
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
htc-kernel and18-2 #1
Build Number:
2.32.466.1 CL283905 release-keys
Software Number:
2.32.466.1
Also, the market app was NOT preloaded on my phone as well, that's weird, right? I have tried to do factory reset, but that did not solve the problem at all.
I would VERY much appreciate if someone would point me out in the right direction so I can enjoy my newly purchased phone. Thanking you for your input in advance. Waiting for further instructions
Lulz, New age conversion much....
anyway enough with the racisim. Yeah easiest to just flash back to stock ROM. Im in the same boat as you except i only use linux, gotta send in warranty claim to telstra (telescum) and my phone is rooted with unr3voked with clockwork recovery mod.
L> for program i can flash a rom on ubuntu linux
Ps: Yeah there are tons of places to get the stock rom for australia brb ill get one now
Hi
I am in the same boat, but with a Desire S. Has all this crap I can not seem to remove so would like to reinstall the stock rom?
I come from a nokia user and it was as simple as using the nokia software updater to update the phone. Is HTC similar?
Check this thread for bringing phone to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880268
It's weird, though, can't you just uninstall the app ? Or just factory reset the phone from the menu.
thanks for the link, ill have a read
for me, the phone had additional apps installed & this was noted by the person I got it from. As this is my first smart phone I am cautious that there maybe something installed which should not be. eg steal my details etc
So would like to wipe and start again knowing its a clean install
Then definitely do the procedure which involves the installation of a stock ROM and probably it would be a good idea to format the SD card. Nothing fancy just reformat with the phone.
OK, after some further reading I have managed to root my HTC Desire, partitioned my SD card and running SuperDooperAwesomeROM v0.3. Unfortunately, as a "newbie" here, cannot post in the dev forum so here I am. Waiting for the latest v0.4 and changelog. SDAROM is something that I am very interested in or any other stock, clean GB with Sense, minimal customization and just needed apps. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free
No WiFi issues with SDAROM at all, but I had HTC sense crashing unexpectedly on couple of occasions. Also, the cam crashed 3 times as well. Phone just restarts by itself. Smooth operation, unfortunately not stable. Hope the next version will be a bit better.
Cheers,
Ivan K.
CyanogenMod7,,,, slick, stable, and no annoying "extracirricular" audios.
Glad you had no problems flashing; Usually... but a lot of folks here are very knowledgable...
The "random" audios you heard, were "come to prayer" audios. Undoubtedly synced with your time zone.

[Q] Upgrading to new ROM - few questions

Hello all,
Got my Droid Incredible 2 back in July 2011. Rooted and flashed a custom ROM pretty much right away. Since, I have had almost no problems with this phone (except the alarm clock stopped working a few months ago...) and it has been through a lot.
Recently, my phone has been acting kind of weird. I am not quite sure what the problem is (sometimes the battery seems to drain extremely fast, pretty much only symptom atm and very random). I am going to keep using it regularly for a few more days to see if the problem is persistent.
Anyways, if the phone is actually OK still, I was thinking it might be nice to get a fresh new ROM. Like I said, got the phone 07/11, haven't touched it since.
I am liking this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892450
What is the recommended process of backing up my data and flashing this one on? I see the instructions in the thread and intend to follow them, if anyone has more detailed explanations or would like to walk me through it that would be appreciated.
Do I need to update anything else? Like I said, phone is on pretty old software/firmware since I have not received any official updates over the life time of my phone. I am seeing kernels and radios, will mine work? Can I tell? Are there better ones I should use?
I am currently rooted. Running rmk's Ginger Sense ROM (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161411) which is Android version 2.3.3 and Sense version 2.1. I have Titanium Backup and Superuser apps installed.
So, its been a while. Help me update right. I will continue to research but my knowledge relating to this process is currently severely lacking, so any help is appreciated. My phone has been fast, smooth, and stable - I would love to keep it that way!
Thanks
Just follow the instructions in the op. Do them as it says. Be sure to reboot recovery after installing rom and before flashing gapps. It wont break your phone if you forget, but it might help the soft keys work right. No need to update firmware. The kernel he includes is custom too so you dont have to flash a different one, research if you want to though, there are others that work. Try it without changing radios, if you want to change radios its simple and there is a thread that has them on xda.

[Q] Help with my GT N5110?

Hello! It's my first post so I'm a little bit nervous.
Okay so a couple weeks ago I got myself a Galaxy Note 8.0 (finally). It's all shiny and fantastic and great. Yeah. But I noticed that if I clicked in a text field (be it a word processor, Google Docs, or a URL bar) it would take a lot of time to open the keyboard. Like a whole lot. Like I'd wait a good 30 seconds sometimes before it opened. And sometimes it would just not register keystrokes or lag a lot. Now I've had an S3, a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, and a Galaxy Note N7000. None of them had this problem ever and they went through some serious wear and tear. This one out of the box was lagging. This is Problem 1.
I read online (didn't search too extensively) that this was a "ROM Issue" and loading a different ROM would fix the issue. My cousin also recently got a Note 2014 Edition (I don't know the model or anything), and said she'd read that simply updating the Android version would fix this lag. So I decided, hey, why not. I didn't know what it was updating to, but I hoped it wasn't 4.3 (which I updated to on my cellphone and did not like). So it updates all fine, but then I saw what I'd been dreading. My Google Talk had updated to Hangouts. I cannot stand Hangouts. Honestly if they changed one or two things about it, it wouldn't be bad. But Talk is a program I use frequently and I hate Hangouts. So here is Problem 2.
So since I gave myself a crash course on flashing due to having to get my N7000 unlocked and updated to ICS, I figured that I could do this easy before I go to bed at around midnight of February 10. It is now past midnight of February 10, and I haven't even flashed CWM on it yet (because I've read that rebooting it without directly installing a new ROM gets rid of CWM).
Problem 3? I'm unable to find a stock ROM of GTN5110. A "deodexed" (new term to me) version of one. I won't really use the root for anything on this, I think.
I know my limitaions at finding a ROM are due to the fact that I want a STOCK one and not a custom one. I'm biased. I think the stock is really pretty already and don't want to go changing it. Maybe one day I'll change my mind, but for now I just want stock. I'm kind of wishing on a whim that these stock ROMs will have Google Talk (Problem 2) and not Hangouts, and also that that lag issue is not present. I'm also not biased against going completely stock and flashing back to 4.1.2 which DID have Google Talk, except that I haven't been able to find any ROMs of THIS, either.
TL;DR
1. My tablet was laggy so I updated it
2. The update gave me Hangouts instead of Talk
3. I decided I'd flash CWM and install a stock deodexed ROM (or just a plain old stock ROM) with it but can find no such ROMs
So, community, I present you with two questions.
1. Is there anyone who can point me to a COMPLETE stock ROM for my N5110 (and as there are usually specific Firmwares and stuff, tell me how to find exactly the one I need by finding my PDA and stuff)
OR
2. Is there anyone who can point me to a DEODEXED stock ROM for my N5110 (firmware yadayadayada)
a. WITH Google Talk
b. WITHOUT Hangouts (And maybe if you're feeling generous, explain how to install a Stock APP so that I can HAVE Talk?)
Thank you!

[Q] Entire Device Lags with Maps/Waze

Hello Everyone,
Ever since I've updated to 4.4.2+ I've been having the same issue across multiple ROMs. This being when I use Google Maps or Waze the entire device will frequently start to lag really, really bad. Somewhere around 15 seconds response to do anything. More often than not, I have to reboot by pulling the battery. I've seen similar issues between probably the 6+ ROMs across 4.4.2, 4.4.3, and 4.4.4, so I don't think its something isolated to any one specific ROM. This leaves the assumption that it may either be something specific to my device, the way I'm flashing new ROMs, or something seen in all releases of 4.4.2+. I doubt it's the third possibility, though. When I flash a new ROM I wipe cache, dalvik, and storage via TWRP's wipe option followed by installing the new ROM and Gapps, if needed.
I fear I know too little about how Android functions to start really troubleshooting the issue. If anyone can point me in the right direction of some troubleshooting guides, posts, applications, logs, etc I don't mind trying to hunt this down myself. I welcome any and all help that can be provided.
Thanks

[Q] New to ROMs and all that jazz. Help a guy out?

Hey all,
So as it says in the title, I'm new to custom ROMs, kernels and all of that stuff. I've had my G3 since it came out, and with the G4 around the corner, I thought it couldn't hurt to start experimenting a bit with my G3 and see what more I can get out of it.
I've been on LGs stock ROMs since I got the phone, I've been too scared of bricking it or voiding the warranty to try flashing a custom ROM. But, digging around the dev section for the G3, I'm seeing all these custom ROMs and how well they're improving peoples performance, and I figured I might as well ask how to go out switching to one.
I had an old Google Nexus S (Yes, I know VERY old) that I had running stock with a custom kernel, but I only used that to toy around with. My G3 is my phone, it's my daily driver I use it for everything from my Music to communication, social networking, gaming, pretty much everything. But lately, a few factors have been driving me closer to wanting a different experience, namely:
- I seem to only have around 1.1GB of RAM free (I'm on the 3GB/32GB D855 Variant) after booting up, and after a few hours I get down to around 600MB free. This isn't ideal, and lag is a player after I open a few apps up. I'd like to get rid of the bloatware that comes with the phone that I can't force-close in the task manager.
- Battery life (Yes I know it's a QHD screen but still, I'm seeing people doubling their SOT with custom ROMs, and I'd like to be one of them!)
- General performance (The stock ROM is only so good)
- A few niggles I have with the stock ROM, just things I find personally annoying.
Now, basically what I want to know is the following:
- What's a good ROM to start off with and try on my device? I've heard good things about BlissPop v2.2, CloudyG3 2.2, ChupaChups ROM, and a few others but they're the main ones I'm interested in. I'd prefer a ROM that comes without all the bloatware on the phone, as I don't want to root to have to do this myself if possible.
- Do I have to root to do this? I'd MUCH prefer to not have to root my phone myself (even though I'm aware there's some good tweaks for the phone that lengthen battery life etc. but one step at a time, lets just start with a custom ROM) but I'm unaware if I need to root to install a custom kernel or ROM if it's needed for the phone (The Nexus S was given to me from a friend who'd already rooted it, I just wiped it and played around with it). If there's a ROM that requires root but can do it itself on install, that would work for me. (CloudyG3 has something like this I believe)
- How easy is it to keep the ROM/ROMs up to date? Is it like updating the stock ROM? Can I do it just by downloading the new version of the ROM and flashing it to the phone without having it wipe all my data (Like you do when updating the stock rom (From like V20A - V20B) Or do some ROMs have a built-in update feature ( think ChupaChups ROM has a built-in OTA update feature)?
- Is there any chance of me bricking my device and it being unrecoverable if I do this?
- Is there a guide to how to move from the Stock ROM to a Custom ROM somewhere here on the forums, or is it specific for each ROM? Mainly for the reason above, I want to avoid making my phone unusable so I want a good, solid guide if they're available.
- When I sell my phone in the future, am I able to restore the stock ROM and Kernel? Mainly worried about the kernel here, I know I can just factory reset and flash the stock ROM but not sure how I'd go about flashing the original kernel. If I could completely backup the original kernel and everything and then save that to my computer for later on, that would work well, I've saved backups of all my .kdz's for each ROM version.
- Is there a complete guide for backing up everything that is stock on the phone (ROM, Kernel, Userdata, etc.) and then starting over from scratch (Like a step-by-step process)
- *Optional* Does anyone know if I could restore my app data from the stock ROMs built-in backup tool in settings to the custom ROM if it supports it?
So that should be pretty much it, I'm really just looking to move to something more from my phone, and there's some good options out there, I'm just concerned regarding the things above. A huge thank you to anyone that's able to offer me help, you'll be doing me a HUGE favour. I don't think I'll be able to afford the G4 when it comes out I'm looking to get everything I can out of my G3.
Thanks!
I can't take the time for all the answers, but to get you started, look for the LG one click root thread in one of these sections.
