Hi,
Ive seen a few other posts like this and was curious , at the moment i cant use auto brightness becouse if i do this transparant line becomes quite easy to see.
However if i set brightness to 60% i dont see this line. However i do still see it on grey backgrounds and if i have the browser open and pull taskbar down its still quite obvious.
Im not to sure wether i should bother swapping this phone as last month i saw around 5 / 6 sIIs with the same issues and even blobs. So im thinking with 1 line im not doing 2 bad.
If people think its worth swapping i might just do that as ive spoken to shop and they are fine with it. However i dont want to get caught swapping phones if this is part of how amoled works or traits of useing amoled as i could end up with one thats worse.
Any opinions views well appreciated i can post a pic if needed but im guessing most people that post here will know what im talking about
One thing id like to add is that this phone is simply awesome , ive owned sII and sensation xe and ended up returning them but i really do like this phone ics is well nice

Sorry, but this is how aMOLED works. At lower brightness levels, it cannot keep every pixel in check. This is especially true when they've crammed 1280*720 pixels on a 4.65'' screen. If it is not a hassle for you to swap (i.e. you bought it at a brick and mortar store) you could swap it out. You might get one slightly better, or slightly worse. I had a couple of lines on mine, but I didn't mind it. The price really through me out though...
It's just what you have to deal with to get the best blacks...

I had the same issue and ran an app from the market called Dead Pixel Test... I left it on Yellow colour for a few seconds then alternated to other colours... had to do this for like an hour before the white line was completely gone! Now been a week and the line didn't come back so I'm happy that a simple software like this was able to fix it!

How is a dead pixel tester app supposed to fix your phone?
Break in the pixels possibly? Amoled pixels burn at different rates.

I had the transparent line on the screen too. It was clearly visible on light & grey backgrounds such as when opening a new tab in the browser and loading the Android Market.
This coupled with a yellow tint to the screen on white images, the average battery life (for me at least) and the volume bug which took a while to get fixed were enough reasons for me to return the phone and continue using my S2.
I definitely will buy the Galaxy Nexus again though. I liked the hardware and the screen clarity was great and stock ICS is superb. It was just a shame about the warm colours and transparent lines. Hopefully these get fixed in the near future via new production batches or a software fix. By then maybe an extended battery will be out too.
just to update this thread swapped the phone and my new one has no transparant line , however my new one does have some crazy banding which can be viewed here :-

Just to clarify a point that keeps being made. This is how SOME AMOLED screens are, not all.
I have a perfect screen as do many others, if it bothers you, exhchange it for a new one as it is possible to get one without defect.
Just kind of annoying how comments are made that make a blanket statement about all screens, when it really isn't. Sure it might be a typical problem with AMOLED, but it's not how they work and certinaly not a problem with all to have lines down and across them.
I got my G3 today at T-Mobile at 10am. I noticed two things. Once the text in Google Apps, and on websites, where there is a light grey backgroud behind the text it makes the text look more like pre HD days and very over sharpened... Also the screen has a ton of faint 'grayish' lines going through it (it almost makes the entire screen look grainy...) which I usually only notice on white screens or areas with light colors...... I am wondering if anyone else is seeing this at all? So far I'm unimpressed with this screen and I kind of regret trading in my G3. I'm thinking about running back to T-Mobile and see if their display model shows the same things but I wanted to see if anyone else noticed any of those issues above?

I don't have any of these issues at all.. Screen is crisp and bright and I can't see the digitizer at all.. Love this phone! White version here.
I think the color is pale comparing with other phones.
I'm curious if changing the dpi will help with the over sharpening.

Like he said, it's the over-sharpening algorithm they have applied to the display. You'll either get used to it or you won't or.. Some update will make it optional. It hurts more than it helps, but that's what LG chose to go with, so..

I notice the over sharpened text but its not as bad as some guys on here make it seem. I can most definitely live with it.

go to settings>accessibility>color adjustment>on> and move the circle to ur liking

Don't worry, mine is the same way also..
First thing I noticed right away when I received the phone, almost looks like pentile matrix amoled which I despise.
The thing I enjoy most about IPS LCD especially high resolution ones are the smooth soothing crisp look of text. What LG has done with this oversharpening crap is a travesty, whoever gave the green light to this should be fired. Text on white looks okay, but add in any light background and it becomes a mess, like a low resolution jagged mess.

Screen shot?
I'm know now that the text over-sharpening is the problem with the text on grey and light colored backgrounds and that it's happening with everyone. But the only thing that really bothers me is that I can see all of the little lines of the digitizer of the screen on white background and some light blues. Its very subtle but now that I noticed it I cannot unsee it. The two T-Mobile displays both do it at the store so I guess I'm stuck with it... It's kind of lame because it makes some things look grainy and ugly...

Since I tried it at Corp Store, I will take a pic to show.
Generally you have to move the circle in between 1st and 2nd center icons and you should get a bit better color (I tested it with my Note 3 and Note 8).
In addition, I realize the "over sharpening" text issue when the font is wrapped by "shadow". When it shows in webpage, email...etc, the text looks OK. It's like Note 2 when playing video in small window.
I just exchanged it, and then adjusted the color to your suggestion. I also set the animation speed to x.5 and its blazing fast. Screen is much better so its all good. Battery life is better on this one too
That Accessibility setting is meant for colorblind and/or nearly blind people to adjust their screen so that they can actually see it... probably a law that requires it. It is *not* a screen calibration tool and not a solution for fixing an off-color or bad screen.
I have examined some different models in different corp stores (DeKalb Ave, Fulton Street, Madison Ave/42nd, Broadway near City Hall, Court Street, 86th Street near Bay Parkway) and found that:
I compare my Note 3 and used Chrome to open Google.com (desktop view).
The screen looks reddish has more "overly shading" fonts on standby problem, but
The screen looks cooler (blueish tint) looks brighter and "normal".
In addition, the model has "cooler" screen runs cool.

I'm on Verizon and I have the same exact issue with my screen. With the default wallpaper you can see the faint 'grayish' vertical lines, and the over-sharpening can be seen on the Since some people are saying they don't have any issues, I'm wondering if it's a device specific issue and should exchange for another one...
This is literally the only thing I don't like with this phone.
I have my n5x approximately 1 month now and i have a dark line and the navbar icons imprinted on my screen (not that noticeable at a glance, but noticeable when in apps with black/white/grey backgrounds or just staring at a random pic with these colours). I want to know if this is normal (because I'm pretty sure it's not) and did/does anyone have/had this issue? is there any fix? (I've read about the problem on amoled screens but the 5x has lcd if I'm not mistaken)

I have not heard of this happening to any Nexus 5X owners. At least not in this forum. Unfortunately, screen burn-in is a fact of life when it comes to LCDs. You can try a few things to fix it, I'm sure there are apps on the Play Store that claim to rectify issue, but in my experience, when it comes to shadowing on OLED and LED/LCD screens, displaying a white image at full brightness for a few hours on end should do the trick. If not, send the phone back to Google. One month is entirely too short of a time to own a phone and encounter burn-in.

Okay, I'll try some of the regular amoled fixer apps from the Play store. Was hoping not to have to send it back as where i live it would take me at least 2 weeks till i get a replacement, but if that what it takes I'll have no choice.

Burn-in can happen on Plasma TVs, LCDs, and OLED (very prominent on LG's version of OLED up until recently). My Galaxy Nexus, with an AMOLED screen, got burn-in. But here's the thing. AMOLED (or OLED) and LCD/LED are two completely different things. Apps that claim to fix an OLED screen might not work AT ALL for an LCD screen. The Nexus 5X uses an IPS LED backlight LCD panel. In my experience (mainly with TVs, I used to work at a Best Buy), a completely white screen for a few hours would help fix this issue on all screen types.
It's worth a shot. Do it with the phone plugged in overnight. COMPLETELY WHITE SCREEN. or try one of those apps. If you wake up tomorrow and the problem still exists... replacement time.

I have been struggling with the screen on my phone and i want to know if its only me who is having the grainy screen or there are more people having the same issue. Any solid color on the phone appear to be noisy and dirty. People in google are persisting that this is one of the characteristics of the screen and is normal. I cant believe that.
I have had one RMA and the second XL is the same as the first one, first device was shipped from the factory on 31 October and the second one on 31 november.
Should i stop overlooking this issue and live with it or should i push for another RMA?
Compared to my Note 8, the Pixel 2 XL is indeed grainy, however I found it's only noticeable on white/light gray backgrounds, and is hardly noticeable above 35% brightness. My friend's Pixel 2 XL is the same way so I assume this is "normal" for this phone.
The display is a grainy piece of ****. Had 4 phones, all the same, all noticeable even at max brightness on white backgrounds. Makes the screen look like paper. Photos look noisier when viewed on the phone as a result too. If it bothers you, best move onto a new phone.
I've heard the reports of a grainy screen. I've seen 5 Pixel 2 XLs (3 in a Verizon store, mine and a co-workers) and none of them have been grainy.

That's a different news. There is also another fact that its not visible if you don't really look for it on my phone but when you see the grain there is no way back. That's when you would say ignorance is a bliss. Still i would like to hear more from others if there is noise (i rather call it noise) on the screen or not.

Thanks for your reply im more interested to look into differences in grain visibility on pixel 2 xl's, because i have read very uneven comparisons for the same device and none is consistent. Some say they see it some say they don't. I can see the grain in all situations with 20% brightness and also with 100%, if there are some cases which phones are grainless (if that's even a word) i would like to report this to google. In your case all of what you have seen are dirty AF. ( They call it dirty screen effect on tv's)
I had 2 Pixel 2 XL over the last 3 weeks. 1st one did not have any noticeable grainy screen. Had to exchange for spontaneous reboots.
The 2nd Pixel I have now suffers from what you are describing, the graininess is notable from minimum to maximum brightness most pronounced on light grey and white backgrounds. In main setting menu, scrolling black text on white background such as websites and YouTube comments. In fact, this is noticeable to me on the 1st setup screen when you power on a new Pixel the 1st time. My looks like snowflake of old CRT screen, or using a matte screen protector. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to capture with any camera I have.

Both of my Pixels was manufactured on 13/11/17, and they also have different degree where blue shift becomes apparent, so I think it is a pure luck if the next Pixel's screen you get might not have a grainy screen that you will notice.
At this point, from all my research it seems most screen of the Pixel 2 XL will have some imperfections compared to latest Samsung screens find in iPhone, Galaxy, OnePlus and the smaller Pixel 2. This is due to the immaturity of LG's OLED screen technology and the lack of any batch or individual screen calibration at the factory.
For me, the whole package of smooth UI and fastest security updates means I will overlook the Pixel's screen imperfection compared the my Galaxy S8+. But it does irk me for Google to charge similar price as Galaxy/Note and iPhone, when they know they can not provide a visual experience anywhere close to those phones. Even the OnePlus 5T I compared in store have a much better screen in terms of non-graininess, lack of pronounced blue shift and maximum brightness.
This is a bummer. The grainyness on mine is faint, but definitely there. Kinda wish I hadn't noticed it but in all honesty I kinda wondered why some pics didn't look quite as good on my phone as they do on my wife's pixel 2. I made trade this for a pixel 2 and be done with it.
Don't have this issue. I prefer gray wallpapers and I don't see this issue. I just tried looking at all white wallpapers and didn't see this issue either. Over on Android Central there seem to be a few people with this issue but the vast majority do not seem to have it and/or notice it.

I think for the majority it may be more about not noticing as opposed to not having the issue.

Perhaps. I see it on a couple wallpapers here and there but it's rare - but I believe those are just not high rez enough for this screen. That graininess commonly happens when resolution of the image is lower than that of the screen it's being displayed on as far as I know.

It is really a shame for google to think they would be able to compete with pixel 2 xl in such a tough market with thus screen and the price tag. I had high hopes for this phone and i have waited for so long to buy a pixel.
Anyways i received an email from a high level supervisor in google's hardware department saying:
"I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you due to this. As I can see that the phone is working as intended and there is no issue with the device. In this case, we cannot process a replacement for the device. If you want, we can go ahead and check for the refund options of the device. "
Now i want to see what other phone you guys would think i can replace this with. I cant deal with Samsung's bloatware so no S8 or S8+ or note 8 please.
I notice it on white backgrounds but then I realized it's an overlay and it looks grainy because the screensaver shows through a bit on app drawers and such.

I'm thinking of getting the Pixel 2, if I do decide to replace my 2 XL. It really is a fantastic phone other than the screen. Right now I'm trying to decide how's much the screen bothers me.

On the 3 in the Verizon store and my co-worker's I didn't have much time to look under lots of different conditions but on my own I've actually tried to see if. Different colored backgrounds, scrolling on white, different brightness levels, etc. Basically any situations people mentioned and still nothing. Besides the minor blue tint at off angle viewing (which I don't do anyways) I think the screen looks fantastic.
I somehow made a decision to go with the original pixel 2 xl (htc u11+) it has almost the same specs but 128gb, 6gb ram same cpu. Great screen.performance should be on par. It should be fine. What do you guys think?

Seems like a great device. Personally I'm going to stick with the Pixel experience if I trade my phone in. I'd rather have a smaller screen with all the benefits of a pixel than something outside of the Pixel line
It is what it is. If you can't live with it, then it's time to move on :d.
Screen is fine to me. Yeah it's not the best. But if you get a decent one it's good. The grain is there but only noticeable if you stick to the screen to your face and look out for it
If you see it in normal use I would say its a faulty screen
Just entered the phone lottery with a request for RMA. Leaving the Verizon store very reassured. The display on their demo model, while it had some blue shift, had no graininess. I couldn't believe how terrible my screen looked compared to the floor model. Fingers crossed I get a good one.
I'm either going to buy the Pixel 2 or the Pixel 2 XL. Is the display on the XL really that bad? Should I stick with the Pixel 2, or is the issues with the XL over hyped. Those that have this phone, give me all the reasons to , or not buy this phone.

I dont think you can go wrong with either though.

I can live with blue tint. I don't look at my phone from odd angles, so I could care less. I'm more concerned with the burn in, and image retention. I'm coming from a OG Pixel, and I don't have any issues with it at all.

Yea I mean is it the best display out? No. I grab my wife's iPhone X and I really see how inferior it is to that. But is it a bad display? No. I think it's just luck of the draw on if you get one that is gonna burn in or not. The one I had did it in 4 days. This one I've had for 2 weeks and nothing yet. But like I said. Google seemed really good about returning it when I did say that it had it and just had to take pictures to prove it. Next email was the link to put the "purchase" on new one until they received old one back. If the smaller pixel didn't have the bezels I would have went with that because after using an s8 just for the couple months from when I had my OG pixel to this one I kinda grew on the size with a big screen. Like I said, go pick one up and just try it out. You will love it either way

Both the Pixel 2 and the 2 XL have burn in although the 2 XL is worse. You'll probably notice your Pixel 1 has it to if you look closely enough at grey backgrounds full screen.
The Pixel XL 2 screen in my book is a lot nicer than the 2 even with the burn in. It's got much nicer whites (a little bluer) than the slightly red Shamsung one in the pixel 2 and you hardly notice the burn once you realise the phone is just THAT good.

My OG Pixel doesn't have any burn in at all.
I think the screen problem would only be an issue if you are OCD. If you try to find faults and stress about it you will end up hating the device. However if you ignore the screen problem and make the most of the device then you will absolutely love it
display is great IMO
blue shift is the only issue i can actually reproduce, and the ridiculous angle at which it occurs means i literally never experience it during normal use
I personally love the screen. For me it's better than original Pixel. But must say that i wasn't very happy until i rooted and tuned it a bit.
Out of box the screen was too dark for my likings. I'm not talking about the brightness level. What i mean is that darks are very aggressive in most cases.
However, i wouldn't go back to the original Pixel.
Black smear is the only thing I've ever noticed that's meh to me but it was there on other OLED displays I've used too. IMO...shiz on the display was overblown.

Smearing is way worse on the 2XL I have than I had on any of the phones in my sig. Love OLEDs for a long time, but the smearing is something that I notice that I'm hoping an update will address.
Other than that, the display has been fine for me. Blue tint not an issue and no burn in for me.

Google need to tweak the gamma to make it better

The screen is good. The issues are over hyped. And just so you know I am OCD with my screens and hate any sort of uneven tints etc. It took me 4 oneplus 5t to get one with a reasonably uniform screen. My pixel has a more uniform screen than all 4 of them. I will break down the issues and give. my experience. But keep in mind each unit may differ but if you get one that's as Intended this is what you should experience too
1. Blue tint. This is no issue. You might notice it if you tilt the screen at angles...but during every day use you never notice it, after a few days you forget about it all together
2. graininess. I think they all have this to some degree. But I can only see a tiny bit of grain if I put the phone in low brightness and stare at it unnaturally close to my face. So again never an issue in every day use
3. Black smear/black crush. Yes this is a problem. But you will only notice it at very low brightness, late at night.
This is actually a software issue. So it's nice to know it can be potentially fixed through an update
4. Touch problems. I noticed having to tap things a couple times when I first had it. But since the last update I haven't noticed any touch sensitivity issues at all
I don't think it's even a case of ignore the screen problems and enjoy the phone...the screen is pleasant and the problems simply are not there's unless you get a dud of course

The display is not good...unless you get a good one. QC is extremely inconsistent.
Other than the blue tint (which I don't really care about) mine is great. No complaints and thats coming from an S8 plus and Note FE which both have great screens

I agree on the black smear point. That's really the only real issue I have with the phone but it only happens in low light situations. I was able to work around it by using lux, cflumen, and an app called screen balance. I agree that the whole blue shift thing was blown out of proportion because when are you not looking directly at your phone: perpendicular to your face lol. On the other hand I do understand why people are upset. Lots of money spent therefore expecting perfection.
I have no issues with my display. There's been zero burn in, and I never notice the blue shift. It's definitely there, but it's only at extreme angles and 99.9 percent of the time I'm looking at my screen head on. Now that the saturated color space has been added the screen looks just as good as my boyfriend's note 8.
I've also had issues with black smear, but it's not as much of a problem for me as the black crush. Watching darker videos on low to mid brightness can make it difficult to see the details in a scene.
I got my phone a week ago and haven't noticed any problems with my screen. The blue tint I never noticed because I don't look at it from an angle. The burn in I haven't noticed but will try to keep an eye on it
