Anyone else's Nexus 7 slow? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Since the lollipop update my 2 year old Nexus 7 2013 has become quite slow so is there any way I could speed it up? If not could someone recommend me a decent android tablet?

I just wiped mine clean and put on SlimKat 4.4.4. Rooted and running great with solid battery life.

No one else's running slow? I've bought a Lg G pad 7.0 to use instead but that means I can root my Nexus 7 and install roms without worrying about bricking my main device . Amy recommendations in terms of roms that are light on the battery and the processor?

Theandroidfan: My Nexus 7 2013 has run very smoothly and has had great battery life on Broken OS Marshmallow. See https://plus.google.com/communities/116521990967962635243

Android 4.4.4 is best. LP and MM are broken for N7 2013. Mahdi 2.9 Final with ElementalX 2.15 . Perfect combination for me as I play resource hungry games.

I was going to give this one a try. I have everything except gapps - which one are you using? The link to it on the mahdi rom post is dead.
Thanks!

Can anyone give me a link to a step by step guide for a newb on how to revert back to 4.4.4?

are you rooted with a custom recovery?
If you are it is the same as flashing any other ROM. I went from stock 6.0.1 rooted to Slimkat 4.4.4 thru TWRP. Just need the ROM and the proper GAPPS.
If you are going to go thru all that or if you aren't rooted etc you may just want to wipe cache or factory reset. That usually fixes any of the slowdowns and funkiness. A factory reset will wipe everything though so be prepared to start over from scratch. Same as going from L to 4.4.4 will do. That is why I said you may want to try the wipe or factory first.

What?
I bought my nexus 7 on launch day and never was fully satisfied with it's performance. I tried some roms and such and was never fully happy with the balance of: bugs/performance/battery life (and I usually run every phone with CM).
After fixing my flex cables (auto rotation problems) I factory reset and flashed Android M. In my opinion that is the smoothest rom that ever ran on this tablet. They finally fixed some underlying kernel stuff (music stuttering when rotating the tablet to adjust the stereo speakers, streaming music suddenly stops when playing in the background while the tablet is in sleep mode). The only minor annoyance I found is that soundcloud sometimes lags, while hitting the multitasking button. And the system does not really want to use all of the available ram. Chrome likes to reload when multitasking for example.
But other than that it runs nice on Marshmallow. Try a clean install.

I agree Marshmallow runs very well on my Nexus 7. This is my second unit the first one was horrible with any version of android due to hardware issues I don't think any version of android is "broken" for the Nexus 7 2013. The difference between this and the old one is like night and day.

In my opionen Marshmallow runs very smooth on the flo, especially with pure nexus Rom. Multitasking, switching apps, surfing and navigate through für menus are best in MM. The big downside is that near all games run like **** on MM, that's fact. The same games are well playable on 4.4.4 is ridiclous. Even some games run like **** on my nexus 5 with MM but are playable on flo with 4.4.4 Dalvik. Of course it could be the games not optimized but nearly all games were updated often in the past without a change. The big downside of 4.4.4 is that it is not smooth like MM when navigate and multitasking.

I game on my Nexus 7 and when lollipop first came out I noticed some lag but all the games I play eventually updated and now I don't notice any difference in performance. Marshmallow runs awesome on this thing. Whether it's stock or a custom rom everything is smooth as silk.

@mydian which games? I will test it .

Off the top of my head the only games I had big lag problems or low fps were Dead Trigger 2 and GTA Vice City, there were probably more though but those 2 run fine now. I've also played a lot of NFS Most Wanted, Plants Vs Zombies 2, Tetris, and Shooty Skies which have always ran fine. Lately I've been playing around mainly with NES and SNES emulators which have always ran fine. I'd be happy to try some for you as well if you want.

@mydian I remember dead trigger 2 still a lagfest on Marshmallow. Can you test these games in your flo, they must be a lagfest but are well playable on 4.4.4. Hearthstone, Legion of Heroes, Guild of Honor, Minion Rush, N.O.V.A. 3 freedom edition, Sword of Chaos. Report me if you test those games.

I regularly play Nova 3, Modern Combat 3+5, Real Racing 3, Need for Speed most Wanted, Asphalt 7, Galaxy on Fire 2 with no lags.
Although I do get better Quadrant benchmark scores from my 2012 Nexus 7 GPU with Trickstermod kernel (60fps vs 24 fps) when testing?
Running MMB29Q 6.0.1 on my 2013 N7

@Tmzdroid Sorry but i don't believe you . I tested it myself and Nova 3 is well playable at 4.4.4 with 30fps(tested with fps Meter). On MM it is 2 seconds smooth and one second it's stuttering like **** and this goes through the hole gameplay. Modern combat 5 is not smooth on 4.4.4 or MM ever, it's like 25fps. Asphalt 7, most Wanted and Galaxy in Fire are quiete smooth on both 4.4.4 and MM you're right. But Real Racing 3... honestly this **** is a lagparty in 4.4.4 and MM like >20 fps. Even on my nexus 5 with adreno 330 it's lagging with 20fps, it cannot run smooth on the nexus 7 2013!

OK I'll do some vids a bit later on when I have time if it'll help.

@Tmzdroid that would be cool really .

LG Optimus G (E975) - Gaming Focus

Hi all, for those of you interested into, here you are a gaming focus on the LG Optimus G (E975).
I must admit that this is one of the best, if not the best, device for what concerns gaming on the APQ8064 and the Adreno 320.

Ciaooooooo
Actually adreno 320 and optimus g scks in games. Im not saying its to slow for recent games, but its not even close to what Qualcomm promised. Real racing 3, Nova3, gta 3, none of them can run at stable 30fps on optimus g.

I have no problem with Nova 3. Real Racing it's not completly smooth, that's true. But, it's not completly smooth on any other android devices I tried it too!
The only devices capable of running RealRacing3 smoothly are the latest iOs ones. :/
Please don't say like that, we bought it, we love it, there's no point of scrutinizing it now! Its bought by hard earned money, feel it?
Lol,don't know about you guys complaining about gaming, but my g handles everything i throw at it.nova 3,rr3,gta,gangstars city,nova4,mass effect, asphalt 7,nfs mw,nfs hp ,you name it.not the slightest hickup, freeze or anything related.

I would say "almost perfect"....just few heavy games like Real Racing 3 are not perfectly smooth, but they are nevertheless enjoyable!
In rr3,i get bealry noticeable slowdowns in menu, when new cars are available and after a race is finished, when i go to next section in menu, but .in-game experience is just flawless.
The rest if games just flow

I'm sorry I don't know as I used it stock. Anyway, it didn't seem to me to be that bad in playing games even with LG stock rom!
Remember that sometimes the problems come fromthe games instead of the phone.
Hi i wanted to ask of there is any way to improve the game performance on the Optimus G, because I'm playing Riptide GP2, Robot Unicorn Attack 2 and Hungry Shark Evolution right now and all these games are.laggy!
Riptide isn't lagging much but it's annoying. Robot Unicorn Attack 2 is running very smooth at some points, but often it lags very much and is unplayable.
Hungry Shark is lagging alot when you start a new game and after 30 seconds or something like that it running pretty smooth but it stutters every few seconds!
I'm on Stock E97510d-EUR-XX
It would be very nice if someone could help me!
I have no lag whatsoever when playing those games
Maybe you should clear your RAM & Cache before playing them, and see if it improves. Try also greenify o similar apps to freeze apps running in the background.
Edit: Also check if you're on Eco Mode, that happens to me sometimes.
That didn't worked for me so i flashed a new firmware and made a hard reset and now everything is good!
Thanks for the reply
Glad you could solve it.

Can you check if 'Adventures of TinTin' game is compatible ?
Hi,
I'm about to buy this phone (pre-owned) from a friend.
Could any one kindly check if 'The Adventures of Tin-Tin' from Gameloft is compatible with this device ?
This means, it shows up on google playstore when searched from the device, or shows as compatible on the Playstore Website (from a PC).
I have purchased (& downloaded) this game in the past, but it is not compatible with my current device.
Thank You.
Yep,it is compatible.
I do alot of gaming on the lgog its ran any game i have put in with eaz

Played MTG 2014 for 5 hours straight, no lags, perfect!
My fav game is NFS MW....so smooth game play with ECO MODE OFF (1.5ghz quad core enabled).....I feel bit lag in performance once the temperature of battery reaches above 35 lyk that...reason is all the core gets locked to 1188mhz based on the config file in /system/etc/thermald-8064. If yu replace the file with THIS ONE yu wont feel any lag but mobile gets heated soon.....
Gangster Vegas on medium settings and eco mode to save battery, it never goes above 38°c. I tried it with very high with quadcore mode and was smooth as well

The gaming performance on the n7 is pretty good (gta sa on max settings runs smooth) I got a nexus 7 a week ago just cause it was so cheap (the price drop was caused by the release of the rather expensive nexus 9 and the fact that Google is no longer producing the nexus 7) so If you want to get one, get it now cause soon they won't be available anymore!
If your interestes are really for heavy gaming , i'd suggest either to wait for the release of the nexus 9 or to get a shield tablet . This doesn't mean that the nexus 7 is bad , no but the nexus 9 and the shield are both recent and they got more room for improvement .
Personally , im a heavy games player and my nexus 7 doesn't Weaver at all , i can play dead trigger 2 in high graphics with some rare sutterings sometimes , asphalt 8 is buttery smooth , even the most demanding game like modern combat 5 runs smoothly so it is up to you to decide weither to wait for the n9 or to get the n7 ( especially that it's price has drastically dropped )

Bad gaming performance on Lollipop

I wan't to be sure that it's not only me who is affected, I downloaded Dead Trigger 2 on Lollipop, and it's almost unplayable, whereas on KitKat it was running without any lag even on the High settings. Now it runs like on 10-15 fps, sometimes actually is enjoyable, but then drops down again. The same with Modern Combat 5. Downgrading the graphics from the settings is not a solution for me.
Can anybody check it if it's the same for them?

I just clean installed Lollipop with the stock rom google provided, so I will be testing gaming performance in a bit, anyone knows how to root the device without a mod kernel?
Lol I am only playing one game right now. Sad as it is to say this "Cars fast as lightning". Its hard to judge really as while the game is fun, Gameloft support has been slow. Originally it had stuttering and random lockups but when it was running smooth it was running smooth. After lollipop initially it didn't work at all. Then they updated it and for the most part it's fixed. Seemed a little laggier at first but now its fine. Still has the random stuttering but its always had that.
I don't think lollipop is crippling performance I think devs just aren't updating their games
Here is why I stay with KK and not with LP (even 5.1 with insane CPU and GPU OC) : even now at the time of this post, the following games that I play are unplayable on LP but smooth with no OC on KK : Minion Rush, Dead Trigger 2, Vainglory (closed beta), Oddworld, Spiderman Unlimited, Looney Tunes Dash, Deer Hunter 2014, Cars fast as lightning, Heroes Charge lags a bit but playable but still annoying fps drops, etc.
If you use your Nexus 7 2013 for checking the weather and watch youtube videos then go with Lollipop if you really want the latest fancy Android themed veraion.
If you use your Nexus 7 2013 for browsing the web and gaming, then stay with KitKat so you can use your tablet's full performance until the devs fix their apps or Google fixes Lollipop for our device (I don't care who has the fault in games working like I have a 2009 phone instead of a 2013 tablet).
I recently bought this Nexus 7 2013 (2Gb RAM / 32GB storage) with the idea that it would be a great tablet to play vainglory with.... I wanted a 7" tablet that had 2GB of RAM and at least 16GB for storage because I felt an 8" or larger tablet would just too big to play on. I was really disappointed with the performance on VG running on 5.1.1. Gutted really because I've already bought two other budget 8" tablets and they didn't work out very well. As good as this tablet still is, I'm really thinking about returning it and just getting a high-end 8" tablet or something.... I guess downgrading to Kit Kat is an option but I really don't like running an older OS.

Terrible FPS in Lollipop

Has none else noticed the abysmal drop in FPS for games while running lollipop? For example, I like to play Kritika (Play Store), but the frame rate has dropped a bit since 5.0.2, and dropped MUUUUUCH more while running 5.1. This is NOT a rom issue...it even made me revert to KitKat for a little bit, and there is definitely a difference.
Unfortunately for me, I do see the difference in the speed while navigating through apps on lollipop. Any suggestions? I am currently overclocked to 1.7GHz, but I don't even like to do that. I didn't have to while using KK.
Some apps are not optimised for Nexus 7 2013 Lollipop. Example : some 3D games work like we play on a 2009 device (Minion Rush, Kritika, Vainglory Beta, Dead Trigger 2, etc.) and some 3D games work flawlessly ( Brothers in Arms 3, Modern Combat 5, Dungeon Hunter 5, Asphalt 8, Subway Surfers, etc.) . I had also the impression that Lollipop is to blame but if it was, then none of those graphically intense 3D games would of worked. Some games at first they were unplayable but they got optimised quickly for Nexus 7 2013.
In conclusion: stay with KitKat for guaranteed performance in all games or stay with Lollipop and hope that those devs that are just stubborn people because even after over half an year since Lollipop has been released, some of the games are still not optimised for Nexus 7 2013 even if you email them.
On my Nexus, World of Tanks runs ~57 FPS on 4.4.4 and ~ 19 FPS on 5.x
