Trouble with Pixel C - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
just want to make sure I am not alone before maybe returning/exchanging my pixel c...
I am already on my 2nd unit, the 1st had awful screen response. Right now my 2nd ist terribly slow, in apps as well as on my home screens. Also the screen has a quite visible yellow tint on the bottom end (keyboard facing) and the touch screen matrix is visible as well. Do you face the same problems?
I am really frustrated that a 500€ device seems to be that bad..
Cheers

Exactly same symptoms. Now after last OTA my C decided to kill sound in the whole system.
But regarding your issues: Matrix did not seem to bother me although I see it. Yellow tint in de bottom in landscape and in the left in portrait its bit more annoying but forgettable. Lag? Reboot solves it. This last one It's obviously software related.
But yes its fu..ing annoying to pay 500€ and get this out of the box.

Bleeding Issue

Can you see any kind of bleeding edges over a pitch black image in max brightness?
When I turned on the tablet for the first time, two white light bleeding points on the Samsung loading screen catched my attention, just over the bottom bezel.
As this panel is so bright, I am not completely sure if this is the kind of issues you have to put up with (like purple smearing on S4 or Note 3) or if I got a faulty screen.
I honestly think I have a faulty screen, but I would like to read your answers first.
Thanks in advance

yeah, i've got a very minimal amount of light leak. only visible on a black screen, in total darkness with full brightness. a combination that i'll never set it at in actual use. so, not an issue for me.
The bleeding is minor. Unless you are looking for things to criticise this is an excellent screen, one of the best on the market for any affordable (< $1500) handheld device.
Ok. Now I know that it is not a rare issue. By the way, I also discover mine has a black spot (several dead pixels). Not very annoying, but it is there. I'll try a refund anyway. Thank you all

Just got mine tonight and was all excited to set it up and play - then I found a small cluster of dead pixels. Very visible on a white background. Dammit. I also have the slight light bleed along the bottom edge, but nothing too bad. But the dead pixels are inexcusable for a $600 tablet, going back for an exchange.

I don't have any dead pixels on mine. It happens with every company, though I think you'll find Samsung has far less issues with it than others. I hope your next one is okay!
Thanks, I hope the next one is good too.
I find just the opposite with Samsung tablets - I usually have to go through 2 or 3 until I get one with a perfect screen. Or maybe I just have really bad luck.
Ugh, just exchanged at Fry's now and checked it out in parking lot. Good thing. Dead pixel on this one too. They were really nice about the 1st exchange, let's see how it goes with this one, lol
Update: From what I could see in the car, the 3rd one seems to be ok so far, no dead pixels... What was interesting though, the security seals on the first two boxes were made of paper, I opened with my fingernail. This 3rd one, the seals were plastic based, I needed a knife to open it. Maybe different factory or production run?

Screen issues

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.
No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Do you have any picture of the defect. So far, your issue is uncommon one for OnePlus 3.

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.
no issues
Didn't see a logo. Must be blind

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.

Pixel 2 XL - Blue Tint on screen / Burn in issues verify

Hi there,
I recently got a Pixel 2 XL and Iove the phone Minus:
1) When I bend my phone at an angle I see a "blue tint" and when I hold it back straight, I don't see it. is it normal?
I just contacted support and they are sending a replacement but I want to make sure I know what to check when a new phone arrives.
2) How do I check for Screen Burn In issue? Any ways to reproduce it? (Should I use the phone in order to encounter this issue?)
3) Any other issues I should be concerned about when I'm checking out the phone?
Thanks,
Neo
search the forum, all your questions have been discussed ad nauseum.
How's about enjoy the device and quit looking for/creating issues? If you're buying something with the mindset that there is going to be an issue with it you're going to create one.
Burn in is not an issue. Google has already made changes to help alleviate burn in as well. They dim the nav bar buttons a couple seconds after use and they've updated plenty of Google apps to using a white nav bar with dark grey buttons. Google is also trying to get popular 3rd party apps to switch to a white nav bar with dark buttons. So don't worry about it. I've had plenty of amoled displays for years each. The only time burn in was ever noticeable, was when I downloaded a display checker app and looked for it. Otherwise, I would have never known it was there and never did see it during normal operation.
Edit: As for the blue tint. Yes it's there when you view the screen at an angle. I honestly forgot about it, until someone on Android Police brought it up a few days ago. It's a non-issue. Most displays have some degree of discoloration at an angle. This is a little more so than others, but how often do you use your phone at an angle and wish you had perfect colors. Pretty much never. If you're really looking at your phone, you're going to be looking right at it.

Agreed. When I first got the device, I noticed the blue tint right away when tilting the phone, but after a few days I stopped really noticing. Yes, we really shouldn't have this problem to this degree on such an expensive phone, but it's also not like the issue is present when looking at the phone head-on.
Every device has its own issues, and if you go looking for problems, you'll find them! It's up to you to decide if the problems outweigh the good things about the phone.

I don't know why they bothered dimming the navigation buttons. That won't really do anything for burn in. Burn in is caused by uneven aging of pixels. Since that bar is almost always black most of those pixels aren't being used so they are aging much slower than the rest of the screen. The best way to reduce the chances of burn in is to not have the navigation bar background black. The 8.1 update actually changes the background color to an almost white color but only in a few places such as Settings and GMail. Doing that system wide is the only thing that would REALLY reduce burn in.
However, in the almost 6 weeks that I've had my Pixel 2 XL I haven't seen any burn in yet.
As for the blue tint, I stopped noticing it as soon as I stopped looking for it.
I picked up a Pixel 2 XL and noticed the amount of blue tint is highly dependent on the brightness setting on the screen. On this phone, the blue tint is obvious at 30-45 degrees or more depending on the brightness. Yes, it is worse than the Note 8 and Moto Z Force I compared it to, but as others have said, you have to be looking for it or constantly tilting your phone.
The screen is quite good when viewed straight on or even at a slight angle. It still is a bit annoying that a nearly $900 device isn't up to par with Samsung models. For people that have Verizon and want stock Android this phone is the best option.

Hey! the blue shift isn't to big a problem , it really only comes up as an issue if im showing someone something on my phone. They notice it.
My device is 2 months old and I have no burn-in.
There is a problem with multi touch, but there is a fix now but you need to be rooted.
That my experience so far

I agree I've never noticed blue tint as most of the time I'm viewing at the correct angle.
Burn in, I had an LG G5 (similar screen technology) and only noticed burn in after having it for 2 years. Even then it was temporary and would dissipate.
As for the multi-touch issue, Google is testing a software update now.

My mistake, so IPS LCD have burn in issues too. It was like ghosting but lasted for hours.
Also after reading that I realised the XL screen is an LG screen. Now I'm disappointed about my XL The G5 was the worse phone I ever owned.
The blue shift to me is better than a red / pink shift you get on Samsung panels.
It just makes it look a little cooler at an angle and no one has ever mentioned they noticed it when I showed people my phone.
Blue tint is a non issue.
The burn in, I have it, and yes, it was pretty bad. I minimized it by using a white navigation bar and it's getting better by the week.
The burn in and slightly low max screen brightness are more important issues in my book.
Does anyone know the exact amount of screen/touch/quality issues in total. I'm guessing maybe 6 items are brought up in these forms? Kind of a let down in general to have these things but the phone performs well in a lot of other areas.

Sudden washed out colors

Hi everyone. I had a really strange issue hit me today. All was going great these few months but suddenly today my screen seems washed out. Blacks don't seem to be black but light greyish. And playing YouTube videos such as the one attached look terrible like it is a heavily compressed JPEG with terrible color clipping. It used to play perfectly before this. You can see the color clipping around where the dark area meets some light in the 2nd image (sample.jpg).
Strangely enough, taking a screenshot, it is really how the video should look (Screenshot_20190721-230137-01.jpeg).
Just wondering if anyone had this issue before? Not sure if it was a recent software update. I'm still on December update on my end so perhaps it's one of the apps.
A reboot also did not seem to resolve the issue.
Thanks in advance everyone

December? Update your phone first, preferably with a full image if you are unlocked. If that doesn't work, backup your data and do a FDR to rule out a hardware issue. If you end up calling Google for support this will be step number one, so you may as well get it over with. If you are not unlocked already, now would be a good time to do it. Unlocking will wipe the phone for you.
Update your phone buddy.
Just updated to the July update and it's still the same. The video looks terrible on my phone when compared to a Poco F1. Any chance I could trouble you guys to see if you are noticing the same banding/washed out colors on your phones as well?
Played some other videos and the same problem also occurs, especially when there's contrasty scenes. It's as though, my screen bit depth went down a little and it looks a bit like a heavily compressed JPEG when contrasty or backlit scenes appear
I looked at the same video in your OP and it looked fine. I am on Q beta 5.

Thanks fury683! I'm guessing it's probably a hardware issue of sorts. Even some of the default wallpapers are showing banding at times
Same issues are showing up on wallpapers and images as well. Those areas where there are transitions seem to be smudging and all like a low color depth display. Moved on to Q Beta 5 and the problem still remains. The issue seems to be how the screen handles dark/dim transitions.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea how to reset the screen parameters/calibration etc?

Any luck? I started facing this problem on Pixel 3a since a few days
Facing the exact same issue on my Pixel 3 XL. Were you able to find a solution?
Check your color choices under display settings. Try Boosted if it's not already selected. Maybe you had it on Boosted, and somehow it went back to Natural?
Same problem here...
I've noticed that same issue on my 3xl. Looks really bad, both wallpaper and YouTube blocky and compressed.
I have faced the same issue on my pixel 3xl recently. Have contacted the google support. They don't seem to acknowledge that it's an issue that's been occurring frequently. Instead they tell me it's just for my phone. Can anyone bring it to notice of the concerned authorities. I wish this is an issue which has been since pixel 2xl. And they refuse to cover it since the phone is out of warranty
What did you provide them as evidence? Ive sent a few YouTube screenshots and my wallpaper on home screen as it has bad banding at the top. All darks are horribly blocky no matter what quality I have YouTube at
I have sent them pictures of night sky i have taken and other such pictures in instagram where the contrast is very much evident. I have given my phone to the repair service and they said its a case of display mura. But i cant imagine such issues in a phone within an year and half of purchase.
4 days ago, after 2 years using pixel 3 xl I have the same issue. My screen is washed out. I don't have black any more. It is unacceptable buy a phone that costed more then U$ 700 and after 2 years I have to replace it because of screen issue. My battery is perfect, my phone never dropped and everything is working except the screen. I will give up to buy Google's phones. The only one I never had problem was nexus 5, all rhe others nexus 6p, pixel xl and now pixel 3 xl I had basic problems that if I have bought a Samsung or other famous brand will never have it. It is really a shame!
I am having this issue too ! Crazy Google Pixel. No point of buying after discontinuing google photo unlimited storage. Another disappointing issue after buzzing sound for front camera.
Left: Pixel 3 XL, blocky night sky.
RIght: Pixel 2 XL, everything looks normal.
Hi. This is also happening to me.
I'm on a P3 XL.
I believe that detailing what you were doing when you noticed the change may help discover how this is happening.
For starters, this happened to me some time ago and it suddenly fixed itself. Granted, I had the washed screen for months probably and I can't recall how it solved itself, or maybe I solved it by doing something accidentally.
Anyway, this happened again today and now I'm back with the washed screen.
I was watching a YouTube video in full screen with the volume very high, phone was hooked to charger. After a while I quit the application and realized that my screen's colours were messed up again.
It's as if there's a white matte all over the screen affecting the overall accuracy of the colors. the screen's colours get worse the less brightness there is. And when playing videos, especially on YouTube, the darkest areas appear blocky as if the video used a very low compression rate. This blockiness effect is dissipated if I manually increase the screen brigthness, but this is not a practical solution because the colors are still wrong.
My device is rooted with Magisk.
Latest Android security update June 2021.
I use YouTube Vance in root mode, instead of vanilla YouTube.
I am facing the same issue on my pixel 3 XL. Does anyone know hoe to fix this. I have two Pixel 3 XL. The one showing this color distortion has a bit brighter or I can say more white screw than the other. One is working fine till now. I updated to S beta 5 and this happened both are running same version of software and same settings.
Hi thr, new to pixel lineup. Got mine in a very cheap rate in marketplace like 200 usd. But now i can see the same issue. Also my top speaker is distorted in music playback like its broken or something. And most annoyingly a portion of the left side screen has low sensitivity where it misses the touches and scrolls. Which is very disturbing for typing experience. Please dont tell me to reset, coz i did it during the purchase. I am in the middle of a project and i dont have money for a new device, please help.
