[LS990 ZV4] LG File Manager gives error, screenshots won't save, Gallery empty? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Repost from Sprint forum area, since this main area is much more active...
I have some weirdness going on with my LS990, still running the original ZV4 with Xposed and TWRP. I've never had any problems, until now, with anything on this phone, it's been fantastic and that's why I leave it on Kit Kat.
Starting yesterday, whenever I try to open the stock File Manager, I get the following error dialog:
------------
Note
Cannot read files. File Manager will be closed. Please check Media Storage enable settings and try again.
OK <--button
------------
Sometimes the dialog is in the foreground and I can close it with OK, but File Manager never opens. Sometimes the dialog appears behind my launcher icons and everything is unresponsive until I kill the running process using my nav bar shortcut from G3 Tweaksbox.
Also, I was trying to take a screenshot to include with this post, but it gives an error (Cannot take screenshot. Try again.) when trying to save it, plus the notification just stays on "Saving Screenshot" and is unable to be swiped away. [UPDATE: Noticed the screenshots do get saved in the proper Pictures/Screenshots folder, but the notification remains "stuck"]
I have also noticed my gallery is now empty, yet I can still access all of my pics from third-party file managers. Plus, when I open the camera and take a picture, it doesn't show in the little Gallery bubble at the bottom of the screen - in fact, the bubble doesn't even work, but yet the picture is saved properly.
Has anyone seen behavior like this before? The only thing I have changed on the phone is flashing the new TWRP 3.0.0.0 yesterday, using the image feature in my previously installed TWRP 2.8.7.0. I've updated TWRP plenty of times and there has never been an issue, but one difference I did notice this time was it asked if I wanted to keep System read-only or the default swipe to make read-write, which is what I did since I have Xposed and it modifies the System anyways.
Hopefully someone out there has an idea how to fix this, I really don't want to start all over, at least not until Sprint releases MM for the G3. The strange thing is, everything else is working just fine. My phone is fully functional except for the quirks mentioned above, root is still there and Xposed is functioning properly. I did do a Safe Mode boot to see if I could eliminate any root apps, but the issues were still there even after a safe boot.

Try sd card write fix on the market just for kicks u mighta lost permissions to the ext sd try switching save point to internal and see if they save

Unfortunately, I'm not using a microSD card, everything is saved to the internal memory. I thought it might be something with permissions, was thinking about trying the "fix permissions" option in TWRP but I'm not sure if that would make things worse. I've already tried a cache and Dalvik wipe, but that didn't fix anything. Even in Safe Mode, nothing changes.
I've searched online and haven't seen anyone else with this issue, it's very strange. I wish Sprint would hurry up and drop the MM update so I would have the perfect excuse to flash back to stock.

Lingering EVO issues (SD Card, Camera, etc.)

I'm having some lingering issues with my EVO even after running OTA updates. I am running a rooted stock ROM, currently software version 1.32.651.6 (I have not attempted the latest OTA update yet).
In particular are two problems - SD card issues have remained even after the OTA update. This was present even before rooting but after installing the first update (I went to a "full-service" store on opening day and they set it up themselves, assuming everyone would want it - luckily I could still get root). Issues include the Camera application reporting permissions problems randomly when trying to save pictures to the SD card, HTC's music application freaking out and coming to a near freeze trying to crawl the SD card during one of its troublesome spurts, and files disappearing from file explorers. So basically run of the mill, pre-first-OTA sd card problems. But occurring after the update and both before/after rooting.
Second is a problem with the camera itself. When first booting, HTC's included photo/video application will instantly crash after showing the camera icon on the black background. Google Goggles freezes for about 10 seconds then reports it was unable to connect to the camera. After the phone being on for about half an hour, these issues (seemingly) go away until the next reboot.
Last, and least frequent but still troubling, is a problem with the device powering on. At least twice I have been unable to get the device to turn on after powering it off, forcing a pull and replace of the battery to get it working again.
As far as I know, all of these issues could be either hardware or software. Even the power problem - my best guess is that the phone never powers off fully, but is instead locked inside of a deep sleep state and thus can not turn on until a battery pull forces the entire system off.
The questions being - first, are there any known solutions to the above problems? I have found many threads in particular regarding SD card issues, but none that seem to report these problems post-update. The others I have seen little to nothing about.
Second - if there are not known solutions, would it be prudent to return the phone as it may likely be a hardware problem?
Since it seems I'm forced to take the last update if I get a replacement, I may likely have problems getting a full root back. I'd like to avoid that if possible - having root works wonders for doing application development using non-native (unexposed) API's (Which - side note - since I'm developing for 2.1 at the moment, other than hacking for direct access to a Surface, does anyone know of a _fast_ way to do direct blits from native code? glTexImage2d is insanely slow).
Thanks all any help. Again, apologize if any of these are solved and gone problems, but I wasn't able to procure anything myself.
I'd go for the replacement, sounds like a defective unit..
Be sure that the folks here at xda will get root working regardless of OTA.
replace the unit, i'm very particular about my phones, if there is anything wrong with it I replace it.
I too have the SD card issue, I have updated, i have rooted, re-rooted, flashed new rom, different roms (fresh and sd) and it has always given me the sd card issue. Sometimes it wants to be a pain and not work at all, sometimes its good for at least a week or two. I am waiting for a little longer to make sure when I get a replacement its a newer version.
SD card permission errors --- POSSIBLE FIX
I hope/think/believe I fixed this error for those interested, I use my EVO for work and need it to work without a hitch....
Here goes (**Note i am a noob with smartphones with a dangerous amount of IT knowledge - disclaimer for those brave enough to browse around the root files and SD card files; I am not responsible for you bricking your phone, I am only trying to help those in need and putting in my 2 cents_)
Download and open the app ---> Root Explorer (or any other root explorer for that matter) from Android market.
Once Root Explorer is open (look up top/left it will say) Mounted as r/o (means read only) - press the white button to mount it as r/w (read & write)
Press and long hold on the SD card directory (folder) - you will get another window from which you must select the permissions option.
Under top option USER - check all marks -- READ WRITE AND EXECUTE & click OK.
VERY IMPORTANT - Click on the (white button) Mount as r/o to write protect your root files on your phone again.
I just applied this fix about 45 mins ago and seems to be working......updates to come if issues persist or re-surface. (**Note I could not see photos or play music and some apps were also giving me FCs (intermittently) due to permission or write errors to SD card; and now it seems to be working like nothing ever happened.)
What I have ::: stock ROM on EVO supersonic with recent HTC updates applied - standard 8Gig SD card provided with phone / had rooted but put back stock ROM for preference issues.
Hope this info helps some folks...very frustrating issue.
Cheers
SD card permission errors --- POSSIBLE FIX
ONE LAST SIDENOTE COMMENT -
I transfer data to my PC often (running Win 7 32bit_)
It is crucial that you right click on "safely remove hardware" icon on the lower right side (next to date and time) and WAIT until windows tells you
..."It is now safe to remove your hardware" --- I was just taking the plug out when done and it appears as if that could have started or compounded these issues with the SD card.
I too get the could not connect problems at times. And I have lost access to the SD card a few times. Some say its Fring that causes the problem. But after removing it I still have camera issues. I noticed that having the LED Light on while trying to open the camera will cause this problem.
I am running CM6 RC1 so this is to be expected from Release Candidates. Sit tight. It will get fixed.
Well after a full 24 hrs...no issues with the read write error on my EVO SD card, I think that when the phone is removed from PC incorrectly (i.e. pulling USB cable out in mode other than "Charge only" i.e. HTC sync, Disk Drive, Internet sharing - it causes it to "corrupt" the permissions on the SD card - It is still working like a champ and i am waiting impatiently for my EVO Froyo update ... feedback appreciated for those whom tried this fix and had it work....txs
@LF142
Hi there. So I followed all of your instructions above and downloaded Root Explorer. However, every time I change the permissions, they don't save. User, Group and Other is always switched off at root level. Do you think this may mean my SD card is corrupted?
I rooted it with BakedSnack.
I now want to un-root it as I miss taking shots, looking at my shots, listening to my tunes etc.
But I want to keep all my apps. All my texts and everything else. Whats the best way to go about this? I am also a bit of a n00b and I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but when Froyo releases tomorrow (apparently) do I have to unroot to receive the update?
Thanks

[Q] Couldn't capture screenshot. Storage may be in use.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
I was running 4.0.4 IMM30B leak. The new leak/possible update came out, I decided to flash it. Saw that it was only good for updating from 4.0.2 (ICL53F), so I wiped, formatted, and reinstalled it. Re set up my phone (titanium backup, homescreens, android market updates for a few apps, the basics). Everything seemed fine, though I didn't try saving anything. Ran the update to the new 4.0.4, and everything seemed fine and dandy.
The next day, titanium backup runs (scheduled) and fails. Says not enough storage or something despite the fact that it also shows ~14GB free space...
Tried to take a screenshot of the issue, and I get a notification that it "Couldn't capture screenshot." "Couldn't save screenshot. Storage may be in use."
Curious, I tried to take a picture with the system camera app, and it doesn't seem to save pictures either. Though no error messages tell me such things.
Caching seems to work, updating apps seems to work, using 'most' apps seems to work, but saving data to the virtual SDcard has no such luck.
Assuming that it's a permissions issue, I went into CWM Recovery and did a 'fix permissions.' Though that has not fixed anything.
Various searches have shown me that others have experienced this problem, but I haven't seen anyone with a solution. Also, they seem to be experiencing it in various AOKP roms (specifically for the Transformer tablet).
Question: Anyone know what I can do to fix it?
Haha this happened to me and no1 could answer it happened when i went from aokp m4 to m5.. Was odd, but what i did to fix was relock and unlock the bootloader and then get all my stuff back with titanium.. At least that worked fine for me
Edit: well i relocked restarted system and boot android, then reboot into bootloader and unlocked again, then boot into android (fresh new system) and im writing this from my fixed phone 1 week ago.. No problems so far

Glad to hear that there is a fix. I may end up doing this tonight... I'm hoping that a quicker, simpler fix is available (something like boot an insecure.img and change permissions of these folders via adb, or something).
Thanks for that though, as I now know that it should work.
Happening on GSM Galaxy Nexus as well. I tried a rom over milestone 5, then reinstalled milestone 5 and restored my backup, and then got this problem. Seems sdcard is not writable to at all. Gonna try out the bootloader locking stuff i guess.
I ended up using the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit (for time and automated simplicity) to wipe the device, reflash 4.0.2 (signed by Google), reroot, CWM reccovery, and restore the virtual sdcard backup saved with the toolkit.
Once the virtual sd was restored, I restored my apps (but no system apps) with titanium backup. Haven't had the time since to reupgrade to 4.0.4, but 4.0.2 seems to be working for me nicely.
I am able to screenshot, and nice things like that, but sometimes titanium backup is giving me errors about not being able to save due to insufficient space (still 14GB free). Gonna dive into that issue today.
4.0.2 works good.. What its bad about it its the lag, the ROM its laggy and also the battery life and the photo quality.. ICS now its much better than 4.0.2

No fix?
I'm also getting this problem and only since installing android 4.3 from CM 10.2
I have also noticed that when I connect by USB to my PC I can't see anything but the external sd card whereas in the past I've been able to see 3 devices - ext sd, int sd and system. This makes me think it's permissions but I'm not sure what to change and where.
I need a screenshot to send a picture of an mms issue I'm having and can't re-install/restore whatever as this deletes the mms with the problem so I need a fix that leaves the phone as it is except for this repair.
Any help appreciated.

And do you think that'll be leaving it as it is?
I fixed this deleting the "pictures" folder with RootExplorer.

Tried booting in t recovery fixing permissions, tried delete the screenshot folder and tried wiping the dalvik... Never thought of deleting the Pictures folder. Solved it for me to! (This problem just occurred without me flashing a new rom or anything. A ~9 month old AOKP and the error just came up after a reboot)
Thanks jwiegand!

I'm on a different phone, but I fixed this issue by clearing the defaults for the program that launched pictures. In my case, I use Gallery, so in Program Info under Settings, I reset defaults and everything worked fine. I guess this is the same thing as deleting the Pictures folder since I believe it is an issue of 'releasing' the memory that remains in use by your respective program. For all future requests as to which program should be used to launch a file (or picture in this case), I never select the option that binds future requests to one specific program. Hope that helps .
My fix: re enable the media scanner!
Like many others, I have disabled the DRM and media scanner services because of the bug that caused ridiculous cpu usage (particularly on boot). Re enabling the media scanner fixed this problem right up. If you want a free and easy utility to do this, check out: "Rescan Media ROOT"

On some devices (such as Infuse, as was in my case), the only solution was to manually create Pictures/Screenshots (full path: /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots or /storage/sdcard0/Pictures/Screeshots). I created them with Root Explorer.
Had tried all other solutions, but they did not work. Seems that the power button Screenshop would neither create Pictures nor Pictures/Screenshots.

I tried all the previous solutions without success, but manually creating the Pictures/Screenshots folder worked flawlessly on my LG 4X.
Thanks TulsaDavid!

I have tried using home+power button, turned on swipe and had difficulty in using the S PEN to make the screenshot - still doesnt work.
I also tried making a new folder but still doesnt work.
My unit is Samsung Note 8.0
/sdcard permissions broken
Just had this happen on my Nexus 5.
The cause was using adb push to copy files to /sdcard when I was booted into recovery. All the files and folders were owned by root:root. I had to reboot to recovery, adb shell, and then
Code:
chown -R media_rw:media_rw /data/media/0
It might be possible to do this while booted in android with Connectbot or something, but I didn't try that.

[Q] There must be an answer to show apps [Solved]

Edit: Please note this post does have a resolution at the end.
Did you ever have a tech quandry you just had to solve?
Last year I hid some apps in/from the app drawer of a stock, S-On, not unlocked or rooted, T-mobile HTC Wildfire S with the stock Sense 2.1 UI. I want to unhide them and can't find the info on how I hid them anywhere. They do show up in a different launcher, like LauncherPro. They're not disabled, I already checked that in adb in the Android SDK.
I can run them, either from Titanium Backup or Launcher Pro, and then from my recent apps drawer in Sense 2.1 after I've run them in one of the mentioned ways; but, I really want to get those icons back and do a CWM backup of my stock ROM before I start trying custom ROMs on this phone. I like Sense and want to be able to go back if I choose.
I'm rooted now thanks to the many articles and guides here. Unlocked at HTC Dev, and ran root.zip. Installed SuperUser, ROM_Manager, TitaniumBackup
I have spent a LOT of time recently and all day every day since Monday researching here and at Android Forums, the 2 defacto places for phone knowledge. I've also used Google, searched on Life Hacker, looked in all my browsers favs for articles, searched my computers for notes (I usually make a file in Notepad for things I do that I might not remember), checked magazines I read, and so on.
I don't know if I did something in adb, changed a manifest (too many to do that), or installed a launcher that left those apps hidden when it was deleted. I hid about a half dozen apps/icons.
There has to be an answer.
Sure would appreciate some help. I'm exhausted trying to find the tip/trick I followed to do this so I can undo it. If it will help. When I try to enable the Stocks package in adb I get a return of:
C:\>adb shell pm enable com.htc.android.Stock
[1] Killed pm enable com.ht...
Does that mean I killed the app, "Way back when"; or, maybe just the process is killed without invoking root (remember the phone wasn't rooted when I first did this)? If I do it this way invoking root, I get a diff result, but neither way shows the app (unlike freezing/unfreezing in the many apps like TB, etc.):
C:\>adb shell
$ su
su
# pm enable com.htc.android.Stock
pm enable com.htc.android.Stock
Package com.htc.android.Stock new state: enabled
BTW if I disable it disappears from LauncherPro and then enable and it reappears in Launcher Pro; but, nothing gets it to reappear in Sense except in the recent apps drawer after I open it in Launcher Pro or TB as mentioned in the above post.
The control has to be in a file somewhere. Do phones have an, "xxx.ini" file for apps like computers sometimes do?

What apps are you trying to show again? Since you have root you can try to use a root uninstaller app to make a back up of the app first, then reboot the phone. Then use the app to reinstall and then reboot to recovery and use fix permissions.
Feel free to make a nandroid back up first just incase you lose any data

Thanks for the response heavy_metal_man. It's hard to tell everything. I missed what and the kind of apps, thanks. I am talking about system apps like, "Stocks" and, "Voice Recorder", and there's others. I did Fix permissions in ROM Manager before and it didn't fix anything. I have tried a lot of stuff and am getting flustered and tired, but not giving up! For the sake of knowledge, I really want to find out the what and how...not just use a workaround. I tried your suggestions with, "Voice Recorder"...backed up in Titanium Backup...uninstalled with Root Uninstaller...checked everything to be sure it was gone and then restarted...attempted a restore of, "App only" with TB and it just churned long enough to know it was hung (I did get a notice there was an update, but don't think that would interfere); so, I powered off and restarted. No changes; so, tried another restore of, "App + Data"...same thing it just churned...another restart and everthing was back to the way it was. VoiceRec in Settings>>Apps>>ManageApps, but not in the Sense app drawer. I then couldn't get ROM Manager to do anything when I selected Fix Permissions...couldn't get into TB, did the update, still couldn't get ROM Mgr or TB to do anything, and so did a battery pull restart...I did go into CWM, but just rebooted. Then everything was normal, meaning as before, and fixed Permissions in ROM Manger. I don't think it matters whether I fix in CWM, ROM Mgr, or ADB...they're all reading the same .xml files to set permissions. Anyway, No VoiceRec in the Apps Drawer.
So I'm back to square one. Any more ideas I'll be glad to try them. I don't think I used APKToolkit to do anything or that it would be in the apk's. Tomorrow I think I'll try to find something in the package xml's...just need to find the right package that would address them all. I've looked at a few, but just for change dates on all the files in the packages...all were 2009, and I'd have done this in 2012.
Thanks again...tomorrow is another day.
Re: [Q] There must be an answer to show apps
Hmm. For the sake of argument make a full backup and then factory reset from recovery, then reboot and go through the first setup nonsense. Are the apps back?
Also the sense launcher is called Rosie should that ring any bells.
If a factory reset doesn't fix this then you may have to flash a stock rom to sort it like

h_m_m,
I did a factory data reset myself before, which I believe is really just an erase of data, and not a real reset (like formatting and reinstalling an OS in a computer). Then of course there was the factory reset that occurred after unlocking and rooting. Neither of those changed anything. I have flashed a CWM recovery after rooting.
Are you saying, boot into recovery:
1. Factory Reset as
a. DO NOT wipe the factory data reset
b. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
c. Throw in a wipe of the batt stats too
then
d. Do the factory data reset and let all the caches rebuild as they will
or
2. Factory Reset as
a. Wipe factory data reset
b. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
c. Wipe batt stats
then
d. Backup and Restore>>Advance Restore>>Original ROM>>Restore system (not the data, cache or any of the other stuff there)
If number 2., then I wonder if that would put me back to OOB (Out Of Box), and if so, would I lose root, have T-mobile...yeah, I like T-mobile for some things - - blame it on Catherine Zeta-Jones time as spokesperson. As long as I have CWM recovery and have backed up from there I can't do anything that would ever leave the phone bricked; and, I can always unlock and root again if needed.
Either 1. or 2. I want to hold those in reserve because I do want to find out how I hide them. They act exactly as though they're disabled, i.e., The icon is gone, but I still get updates (Voice Recorder was updated just a week ago); however, they're only disabled in SenseUI. LauncherPro shows them all, and of course functionally...and remember once I run one of these apps, like Stocks, in LauncherPro, I can then switch to Sense and run it from my recent apps (long press on Home) or the pull down notifications area list of recents.
BTW, You were too gentlemanly to ask, but I clicked a couple, "Thanks" for you today. I was tired and forgot yesterday. We may not solve anything, but I'm enjoying/appreciate the conversaton/thread.
Even though I'm holding on those ideas above, let me know which/what you think of them please, in case I ultimately go that way. I did clear the data in Apps>>Manage for both of the HTC Senses and Rosie. I'll have to look at what's in Rosie though, maybe that holds the key!
As an aside, the first personal web page I made had, "Iron Man" as the background music!

Firstly thanks for the thanks , I love helping people out! Its how I get my kicks
Secondly as long as you have made a nandroid back up in your recovery you are pretty much covered for everything. If I was you I would go for option 2 and wipe the lot. Then let the phone fully boot up and go through the set up. If a full wipe fixes the issue then we at least have a solid starting point to find out what's happened after that little test then restore your back up regardless.
Notes: the factory reset will not remove root or any extra system apps you have installed.
As long as you have the back up done you can always go back to it, allowing you don't destroy the bootloader. But that is highly unlikely as you are still s-on
Also an option to help this might be to use the app titanium back up to back up all your apps data separately, then back up your contacts, SMS ect, and then do a fresh install of a stock rom. Once that is done you could restore your back ups manually and go from there
I must say though this is a very odd case indeed, I'm pretty stumped as to how you have managed this without root

Re: [Q] There must be an answer to show apps
I have been looking into this more and it turns out sense hides some system app icons by default. Such as the camcorder, as we already have the camera app. Can you post a list of the apps to cross reference them?

Sorry h_m_m, I didn't get an email notice of your reply on the 24th. Stocks and Voice Recorder are 2 definite ones. They don't show in Sense, but do in LP, and are discussed in the T-mobile HTC Wildfire S manual. I did notice in LP that there are some that I'm not sure I ever saw.
Re: your 2nd last post, I am 99% sure I did something with SDK, either in recovery or in the emulator...possibly debugging, that could be done without root!? I installed the SDK just short of one month after getting the phone. I really believe this was an article/tutorial by a programmer/developer that just walked me through. I felt OK using my computer skills in things like Visual Basic, SQL, and so on, but I was nervous because it was my 1st smartphone.
Anyway, in the last few days I've decompiled Rosie.apk to see if there was anything I could recognize or reason in the Manifest or Resources, but no clue there. I decompiled the Stock.apk from my WFS and one from a Hero to compare, again specific to the rosie/htc launcher, but nothing. I decompiled the htcSoundRecorder, no joy, Calculator (shows, but for comparison) - no joy. I have not done anything with the .odex files...maybe the tutorial I followed set something in those smali/java files, BUT, I don't see evidence on the computer I use for all this, of Eclipse or the JDK...only Java FX 2.1, but it's install coincides with the install of Google's Chrome browser, which uses it.
I believe this info is so obscure (except to ROM developers, I'm sure) because a lot of phones after Gingerbread got the menu option in the app drawer to hide icon shortcuts. So I'm going to keep this post in my favs and hope I get any email notifications if someone posts; and, search for articles now and then, but get back to living and leave this obsession behind...but not forgotten.
Hopefully I'll find something, come back and post it and even get a thanks for an interesting article and providing some obscure information!.
Oh, and I'll try option 2. from a couple posts ago before I take off flashing a bunch of ROMs, or after I delete stuff from this one and make a 2nd backup...like we rooted for! Clicked a couple more thanks too.

That's probably the best plan at this point sorry I couldn't help out more, but you have totally baffled me with this one just goes to show that the sdk can do far more than it lets on still, I hope one day you find that illusive tutorial and post it here
PS, gave you some thanks

Hey h_m_m,
Thanks for the thanks!
I had time Sunday and I found some info and fixed them to show! I used search terms based on your statement that HTC hides some apps by default and found an article that referenced the, "/system/customize/mns/default.xml" file that contained a function, "applications_hide". So without getting into what I might do or might have done previously in the SDK, and since I was rooted, I just copied the file to my sdcard, attached to a computer and opened it in Notepad (needed to use the computer because it's well over 2000 lines in the file with no speed scrolling in es file explorer), changed (as one example):
<set name="plenty" max="7">

com.htc.android.Stock

com.htc.android.Stock.StockWidget

</set>
to

saved the file, mounted the file system using ES File Explorer and copied the file, then pasted it back in the, "/system/customize/mns/" folder. I commented the lines out so they wouldn't run and would still be there for history (instead of deleting the lines), and commented the code with a statement, so that if I ever looked back I'd have info on it. I also did the same with the Sound Recorder, Voice Dialer, and WiFi (all at the same time as Stocks).
I did a factory reset and the shortcuts showed! This file, after all, sets the defaults. Well it didn't end there. I lost root. The su binary was still in it's folder(s) but Titanium Backup, ES File Explorer, and Super User wouldn't run...or rather wouldn't stop searching for root. It was like the su binary wasn't registered in the system; long story short, I re-flashed root.zip and all was right once more. The interesting thing is I had opened and abandoned this, "default.xml" file a couple times because it was so long and tedious to scroll through on the phone!
You can see a sample, "default.xml" for Gingerbread on code.google at http://code.google.com/p/warm-ginge...e/trunk/system/customize/MNS/default.xml?r=34 just stop the script if you get a pop-up. It's about 1/4 of the way down, or just do a find for, "applications_hide". There's only 2 things hid in that example file. ***Note that default is misspelled as defeault, but it seems to parse...it's in my phone's file that way too. I'd be cautious about opening that site on a phone browser, it seems to want to run on my computer when I open it.
What's the advantage of this? It could show apps or enable features that someone might like. This file sets all the defaults present OOB or after a factory reset, i.e., bookmarks, what I call sample app shortcuts and widgets on the screens, wallpaper, the 4 stocks in the stocks app, etc., etc., so those could be modified if desired as well. Proceed at own risk!
Clicking more thanks h_m_m! I don't know how long this would have taken without your feedback and input.
Re: [Q] There must be an answer to show apps
That is great news man I'm glad you got sorted and posted your findings here that's really interesting, and good to know

[SOLVED] My status bar has disappeared

I'm running Xylon 2.1.1, which is based on 4.2.2
I recently thought it would be great to copy the systemui.apk file, change some of the icons and replace it. It didn't work and somehow it made my status bar disappear. I put the original file back, but that didn't fix it. I then wiped the cache, did a dirty flash of the same ROM and wiped the cache again, and I still have the same problem.
Also I'm using a system theme (Flow) and it's not really applied properly, some interfaces aren't themed, if that helps.
Anything I can do short of doing a factory reset? I know I haven't enabled expanded desktop or anything.
I've reinstalled different versions of the same ROM multiple times and it still hasn't fixed the problem, I'm starting to think there's a bigger problem here. Could I have downloaded a virus? I'm always careful about installing apks but still...
Also is it possible that when I messed with systemui.apk I broke something else?
A re-flash of the ROM should have fixed it so I dont know what to tell you there. As far as replacing system files, make sure you set the permissions to what they are supposed to be or else they mean nothing to the OS. And if your systemui.apk file isnt working right, I would think more than just your statusbar would be messed up.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by setting the permissions, I did "fix permissions" a few times in TWRP. And it does seem like my systemui is completely borked actually:
-No status bar
-No navigation bar (I usually have it disabled because I use gestures, I tried to enable it and nothing happened)
-Aforementioned theme problem
-Can't change the wallpaper from the default phase beam one
I'm getting worried that it's some kind of virus that's sneaked its way in to my other apps. I've tried going through /system/app and /data/app but I haven't seen anything that I don't remember installing. I might try an antivirus but the ones on Android seem to be more focused towards real-time protection and that kind of thing, rather than getting rid of things that are already there.
Anyway thanks for your reply
I fixed it! I'll post what I did in case someone has this problem in the future:
Settings - apps - all - SystemUI
For me there was an option to "uninstall updates" which I'd never seen before, so I hit it and after a reboot everything is fine. I was getting pretty worried there...
You arent going to just get a virus out of nowhere. Contrary to what people believe, viruses are pretty rare on Android. So dont worry so much about Viruses.
You not knowing about changing permissions is most likely what happened. Most file browsers will let you change permissions to a file if you have root access. I use Root Explorer and its pretty easy. Whatever file you make changes to need to have the same permissions the other apk files in that folder in the end.
But I'm glad you got it working.

help shed light on build problems

If this is the wrong forum please direct me to the correct place but I have a few issues and questions.
I'm running 10166 on a 640, I don't know if I can update to the latest without a PC but I don't have access to one until October 30. Clarify if I can?
Another problem. Is there known issues with SD app installations? I can't seem to find a list of known issues for my older build, it runs great aside from some new problems I discovered since I just got an SD.
If I install an app to the card, which is the default option and is selected on each choice in Storage.. Some apps on the store wont install and tell me to change where I install apps. I do and retry, it says same thing. I'm sure that changing any of those options doesn't work at all. Sometimes the system loses the SD and it basically shows as not inserted, to which makes me restart and once up again, the apps on the card are all broken and tell me to reinstall, if I go to the store and click Open, the app works fine so it's a shortcut bug apparently. I can't even remove the card and try to install some apps that won't go on a card. Messenger is one app I cannot install no matter what I try since I got my memory card.
Other than this card issue and how ugly and slow the store is, everything else is great.
Oh one more thing, when I reset this build recently, it seems like backup and restore doesn't work very well? It definitely lost all my bookmarks how do I save them? It also applied a lock wallpaper I haven't had in 3 months, and I don't know what else it's supposed to back up but nothing else but texts and a couple random apps restored.
Whoever reads all this thank you for your time hopefully someone can help in any way, reddit sucks for adequate help.

First of all, you can update to any preview build without a PC
Later when RMT does release, which will probably be a previous build than the ones we use as insiders.
The SD card has been spoken about in numerous blogs and forums, some apps need to install on the phone and have no permission to install on SD card, in that case, change storage settings to let apps install on phone, install the app from store and them swap it again to SD card.
The store is a lot lot better on build 10536
Theres a bug on 10536 where apps that cant install on SD and only phone, WONT install, its a know bug which Microsoft is fixing
