Amazon E6853 with "extra apps" installed? - Xperia Z5 Premium Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just received my chrome E6853 from Amazon, courtesy of the "High Voltage converter store". My concern is that the box was not wrapped/sealed. Everything looks legit though, such as the plastic on the front and back, accessories. However, when powered on, it seems that it had been powered on because it went straight to the home screen, bypassing the setup process. Also, not sure if its normal, but there are a couple of apps that have Chinese or Japanese fonts, thus IM not sure what one of them was. One was MZ+, which is in the play store. The other I couldnt figure out, other than it was a robot icon . Also the language was set in Japanese.
Anyone else get an open box, or similar apps? Maybe it was customs? Phone is working great, has no flaws. Also, taped to the box was the adapter for US power outlets, which I didnt need. View attachment 3643423 Anyone know what app this is? Thanks

I would, just for security purposes and privacy concerns, factory reset it. In case they installed any apps that have permissions that could have access to personal information, I would factory reset it. My 2 cents

I agree, and once I got the language set to English, I did do so! I wanted to make sure the phone had the setup procedure(never ordered an international phone before) like Android should. Thanks!

You have the Taiwan Version of the phone.

I have the same version and I had the setup process. Mine was a sealed box from Expansys.

Here is the response from the seller- it does make some sense, especially with Tidbits comment.
Hi
Sony international do not seal there products. We assure you that the phone is BRAND NEW. The only reason they turn on the product is to switch the language. We are sorry that it wasnt changed. We can help you change the language can you please provide us a phone number so we can help you change it.

[Q] So, did your ZL first arrive sealed?

I recently bought a C6503 from a German eBay seller, but it wasn't sealed in any way. More importantly, the phone had clearly been removed at least once from the plastic bag it came in, because there was a dent from the camera on the other side. It had been reinserted the other way around, then sent to me. I returned the phone.
I've now imported another C6503 from phonehouse.de and it too has arrived unsealed - neither the box nor the phone arrived sealed in any way. It mostly looks like it's been untouched. Some unboxing videos on YouTube show sealed versions, others not.
Which was yours? The most important reason for it to be sealed, to me, is because I want to condition the battery before turning the phone on, and if someone has used it before me then there's a chance I won't be able to. Plus, I like new stuff
Was your box sealed? Was the phone sealed in the plastic bag when in the box?
I bought my ZL at Amazon.de and it was not sealed. But I am sure that device was unused. The plastic protector was originally on the phone, also USB cable and earphones were not touched.
I know sometimes the box must be opened to insert local guarantee sheet, manuals, etc. in the box. Sometimes also some local changes are made on the device.
I don't have any troubles with my phone and I am really surprised when I see so many posts where users state their problems. Camera is great, battery life is excellent, scrolling is smooth, really no problems with my ZL, although the package was not sealed.
I got mine from Bell Canada and was sealed with a sony sticker

Interesting.. so far, all the North American phones have been sealed, but those from Europe (although mine's manufactured in China) were not.

Okay, fair enough. Meanwhile, slightly worrying for me is that when I 'first' turned the phone on today, it booted straight away in German and didn't ask me to select a language or any other setup. It all looked new, but this suspects me to think someone else has turned it on before me. I don't know if there's a way I can check, but I was pretty disappointed by this.
I'm wondering however if it's a German retail thing, because this is the second order I've had from Germany (from different suppliers) and both were completely unsealed. Perhaps there's a law that requires them to check it boots up before shipping..?

The language is determined by the customization, different regions have different customizations. Mine came with English (UK) pre-selected.
Bought mine from eBay (USA) and the box was sealed with a Sony sticker. Model C6503.

My ZL was bought at Amazon.de as I told you in my previous post and the box was not sealed, but as I remembered the first thing when I turned the phone on was selecting the language and setup guide ...
In general, I'm also wondering what happens with those products that had been sold through internet sales and later returned by customers and of course already used? Is there any rule that buyer must get completely new device ?

Thank you for this. The phone is probably fine, but for the time being there is doubt in my mind.
I don't suppose anyone knows if there's a system menu I can access that will tell me how many times the phone has been booted? So far, I have only turned it on once, so if that number is anything more than one and can be shown on the system, I will have my answer.
I'd love to keep it, and not have the hassle of returning it, but it's such a lot of money and I want to love my handset 100%, and not have any doubt. It does seem strange that it didn't ask me for the setup guide, and the phone was also already set to vibrate which I thought was strange. Also, the Developer Options were already exposed, but I was of the belief that these need to be enabled by pressing the version number seven times.
The only thing is that I haven't yet put a SIM card in it, so I don't know if that means the phone wouldn't go straight to Setup.
Bought it straight from Sony Shop. That shop also sells other Sony products. Sealed.

Bought a white one from Amazon.de and whilst the box was sealed the unit itself was defective - the metal around the lens was chipped and the glass side near the camera button was cracked. I sent it back yesterday and will get a refund. When I booted it up, it went straight into the German menu without asking me to choose language.
Anyway, I ordered another ZL (this time black) as I saw a cracking deal on Amazon.it who were charging just €310! Price now back up to €499.

If a "new" phone doesn't boot into
setup (language choice) then it is not new! And, obviously, if it's broken in the box and the box is undamaged it's not new! Law is strict, if it is sold as new in product description it should be in factory condition ie. As left factory after fabrication...sealed and not having been switched on!

Exactly my thoughts, which is why I was surprised, since it was ordered direct from Amazon.de and I've never had any 'returns' passed off as a new phone before from them. Anyway, it went straight back as it was clear that either it was already used or someone at the Sony factory didn't do their job properly in passing appropriate QA tests.

Out of the box on 4.1.2 easily the best android phone I have ever owned (there have been many ) and I am not going to spoil it with 4.2.2

If you add multi-touch select and custom color per-account to the stock OPO CM (AOSP) eMail client I'll give you the one off of mine. (never used it without a case and it's less than a week old currently).
The other thing I would like to see added is the option to block "Access Device ID" in the privacy settings. I see that the stock email client needs permission to access my device's ID and I neither understand why it would need that, nor want it to have permission to access it.
I only responded with those requests because I see you say you are learning coding. However, I have to assume it won't be too long until someone who's purchased a bamboo cover for their sandstone black model will offer to either give you theirs or sell it to you at a reasonable price.
Good luck and regards,

eBay or aliexpress. eBay will probably be quicker if you order from within your own country, but aliexpress will probably be cheaper (but from China). Keep in mind that you can order simply the back, or you can order it with the NFC antenna. Without the NFC it'll probably be under $10USD, but more like $30 for the one with NFC installed.

When I say code I mean like C# and Web Development, I've not done too much with android outside of compiling from source using git. The device id part I don't understand that either, I mean it's AOSP and unless it's sending out user data then it shouldn't be a privacy issue.

Check Expansys USA -- they have the 'Lava Grey' (i.e.: black) version for $210, with free basic shipping. 'Natural aluminum' (i.e.: silver) version is s'thing like $30 more. I'm posting this reply in a hurry, so no links -- sorry.

My N1 from Expansys has Build number A5FM401. Neither the tablet nor the retail box nor the packaging was shrink wrapped. Is there a reliable way to determine whether it had the TW version with Google Play straight from the factory or whether the software was altered after it left the factory?

Well, I can say that I'm quite happy with the Taiwanese N1 I bought from Expansys USA. It arrived brand-new in factory packaging and after the usual set up (plus some extra time required to get around the initial language barrier) works great...best $210 I've ever spent on an Android device.

Here's what I can tell you, from personal experience.:
• A5FM401 is the factory-installed build for Nokia's Taiwan release of the N1. Shortly after first login, the device will download several OTAs, culminating in Android 5.0.2 (A5FM51C).
• With my N1, the shrinkwrap had been carefully cut likely to open the box for inspection as noted in Expansys' catalog (e.g.: to check for damage and/or a US-type power plug).
• The tablet itself still wore the factory's wrapping. I carefully examined the polythene under bright lights (think C.S.I.: Android !), but saw absolutely no signs of tampering.
• From talking to several people who own the Chinese (PRC) model, nobody in their right mind would go to the trouble of re-flashing one to make it look like the Taiwanese part.
BTW: when I asked Expansys to verify Google's apps, s'body in the warehouse kindly sent a pic of a freshly unboxed/booted Nokia N1. Maybe that's the one you got?
Hope this helps a bit.

I'd like to hear your results, for sake of curiosity. Meanwhile, mine stopped at Android v5.0.2 -- I'm told this is the current final release for Nokia's Taiwanese N1.
To date, only their Chinese (PRC) part has been upgraded to 5.1.1, but since that OTA rolled out just a few weeks ago, I guess there's still hope for the rest of us.

I am happy with the Expansys unit as well, I was debating between the N1 and the new Asus zenpad 8.0 s which has the same processor and slightly better specs but costs more.. The N1 is much better looking and has stock Android which is a big plus.
I hope they will keep on updating it, eventually to Marshmallow, since after all it's stock Android...

It's very helpful - thank you. The info about the build number suggests that the software is original. Someone here said their tablet was rooted, but I suspect they were mistaken. I missed the part in Expansys' catalog stating that they open the boxes for inspection, that makes it much less suspicious.
The tablet is impressive for the price. Build quality, thinness, performance, wireless specs, battery life. I guess that's why I'm questioning - because it looks like it falls into the "too good to be true" category.
Would love to buy a docking station that takes full advantage of the Nokia N1, whatever it offers from the Type C port out of the box or can be hacked. This press release for a dock reference design specifically mentions the N1 tablet, but I suspect because it was one of the earliest devices and not because the dock is optimized for the N1.

Yeah, I'd say he's simply wrong. And I'm a careful guy -- first thing I did after I got my new N1 running was to install AIDA64 (a free HW-analysis app; look for it in the Play Store). It confirmed that the device was not rooted.

Expansys append something like that ('Note that the box will be opened...') for a large number of listings. I guess we can assume they get their stock from a wide variety of sources and under varying circumstances.

LOL I know, right? This thing is just astonishing value for money -- a super device at an unbeatable price. Except for the disappointing camera and (so far) lack of Android v5.1.1, I'm 110% happy with my purchase.

Yep, that would be a neat accessory, for sure. Well, you never know; it's pretty clear Nokia see their future with Android devices, so maybe we can look forward to an upgraded 'N2' tablet, using the same shell.

I am happy with the Expansys unit as well, I was debating between the N1 and the new Asus zenpad 8.0 s which has the same processor and slightly better specs but costs more.. The N1 is much better looking and has stock Android which is a big plus.

Couldn't agree more.
The N1 is delightful in it's simplicity, with vanilla Android and elegant design. Nokia took the iPad Mini's basic look and improved it; rounding those famously 'chamfered edges' gives much better feel in the hand.

Oh, for sure! Planning to do exactly that, soon as it arrives.
Meanwhile, I bought a leather 'sleeve' protector, originally designed for the iPad Mini 2/3...a gorgeous piece of leathercraft, that looks and feels 3 times more costly than it was. I'll post pics and info on that, as well.

Three PAYG UK

Has anyone actually managed to order the phone from Three for pay as you go? I've tried over 20 times but it just fails at the payment screen used my partner's card too and the same thing happens.
Why would you do that when you can buy direct from razor? Though admittedly right now all you can do is sign up for a notification email.
I successfully pay for the pre-order of the phone in 3‘s website, so I think there is no problem with the website. Maybe you should use another devices to finish the payment.

Tried that still won't go through
I had exactly the same problem as you, tried around 30 times with different cards, addresses, people.
Eventually got a buddy to try for me with all his details and it went through fine. Pain in the ass, three don't let you pay that much over the phone too so no point in you trying to contact their customer services.
In store they are only taking pre-orders for people doing contracts so a waste of time there too.
Get someone else to try.
Is the phone on display yet on Three to view? also will there be roms on this device? as really thinking of selling the op5 to buy this.

My local store didn't have it on display but when asked they had one behind the counter and I had a go on that for around 15 mins. I personally love it.
I have just spoken to the customer service and they said that the reason for not going through is that anything pay as you go has to be under £100. Sounds ridiculous to be honest.

its on display at the three store in enfield town. its very cold to touch and quote boxy/clunky with big bezels, think of a sony xperia in cold metal rather than glass. ordinarily i would move on but for some reason I LOVE THIS ALOMST RETRO DESIGN. i must say the display isnt as bright as the s8 or my OP5 on the demo unit...

when i restarted the phone at three it displayed the three symbol on boot-up, looks like the firmware on the device is three specific. this could make it like Samsung where stock firmware won't allow for volte and wifi calling etc. if it does have operator firmware on it via three, i hope it gets updated as quickly as stock firmware ...
lets see when released ...

Gotcha. They say it is unlocked. The splash screen will unfortunately there, however, the bootloader will be unlockable so I don't see why we won't be able to flash the stock fw on it.

Yeah I know but after all the **** I've been through with Three I don't want anything on my device at all. God knows when Razer will put up factory images.

there's a new update today oneUI

It takes about 30 minutes between downloading and installing. Looks mostly cosmetic but they list a lot of changes. It's such a great device.
Anyone know if there's an automatic way to stop getting any notifications during an excerise routine? Sometimes when I am running, and watching the excercise screen for heart rate etc, ssung health suddenly decides I have 'reached my daily target' or an email comes in, and then it won't switch back to only showing excerise, which is what I want, and if you are running you can't just stop and try to figure it out, or hit back and it thinks you are pausing or ending the run!
Lucky you got the update. We still haven't received anything. Hopefully, it rolls-out soon. Anyhow is there a way to manually update it?
Yes it is easy, install xar csc, there is tutorial on xda for gear s3, same for galaxy watch and you always get updates 1st.
Watch is smoother on one ui, s health redesigned, and on phone's s health now you cant choose manually between watch and phone steps, there is only allbsteps and mobile phone steps.

The only way to download and install updates is to open the Galaxy Wearable app.
Then: About watch > Update watch software > Update now.
You can also check out this Reddit post which lists all regions that have already received the update.

Looks like the Bluetooth versions are the first ones to get it.

Not exactly true. One can use SamFirm (or any firmware site) to download the latest full image, then use NetODIN to flash the watch (though it's not the easiest solution).
Another, even hackier solution is to use the very well hidden POGO pin port on the back of the watch. It's under a small hatch at the bottom strap's connection point. It matches the pinout of the first Gear S watch, so if you have a dock for that, all you need to do is pull the dock's plastic cover, then the hatch on the watch, and after making sure the pins match, you push down to make connection (and of course put it into recovery mode before doing this). This will make it appear like a regular USB device, and you can use regular ODIN to flash it.
However I couldn't find any uploads of the firmware yet.

Here's a link to it. I have it as I own an old Gear S but I don't think it's worth buying.
I also checked on SamFirm and several other websites and the OneUI update hasn't been uploaded anywhere.

It's a few dollars, and it's good to have for worst case scenarios if you flash your watch a lot. Your average Joe won't need it, but those hardcore modders like me find it a godsend
I had a Youtube video about it somewhere but it's lost in my history sadly. I'll try to find it again though.

No. Check that black little plastic rectangle at the bottom of the watch in your picture, partially covered by the hinge. It's really easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for. Basically take the watch, turn it on its back, and look under the hinge where there's more text on the back (top says SAMSUNG GALAXY WATCH, you need the other side where the serial number, model number, etc. are), and you'll spot that cutout. You need to pop that out, and you'll find 5 POGO pin connectors. It's the same pins as on the Gear S, however I can't remember unfortunately what's the pinout on the watch itself, how to match it with the dock's pins. I'll try to find said video, hopefully I can.
EDIT:
First picture in this post shows the POGO pin pads with the cover hatch removed: https://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/gear-s3/sm-r765f-teardown-t3659431

I'd assume that the POGO pin connectors are located underneath this latch if that is what you mean.

Yes it can, i tried searching for the Gear S (SM-R750) firmware and it was available for download.
BUT I also tried searching for the Galaxy Watch (SM-R800) and the tool just returned errors.
