Can't connect to a PC - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody
I got no problems in the past with the N4 and the N7 2013, but here, I'm unable to connect the N5X to my pc.
I tried to reinstall drivers (LG or google ones), but unsuccessful.
Windows 10 can't use it (error 43), and disconnect it by itself (i tried to force the drivers i want it to use, but unsuccessful).
For information, when I connect the phone, i didn't get the notification menu where you can choose which connection you want to use (charge, MTP, etc...).
I also tried debugging mode on and off. The same ****.
I suspect my USB C/A adapter . It's a cheap thing I bought on amazon for 3.99€.
Is it possible? Should I buy a cable? (i would prefer an adapter I can have on myself everyday in my wallet to be able to use with all friends cables).
Thanks.
It is that:

Well, it's just the adapter, i use it with the official cable. I will check that, thanks.

Adapters have known issues with working.
You need to get a usb C/A cable.
Make sure you shop around and don't get a cheap one.
It needs to meet USB C specs our you will burn out your phone and/or comp usb ports.

Yeah thanks, i just bought another adaptater (i prefer) recommanded by Benson
Thanks everyone.

USB doesn't work???

Can someone please help? I just bought a used P3300 from ebay (a wholesaler). The phone works great, absolutely everything works except for the activesync over USB. The phone is not even seen by the computer with or without activesync. I have tried it on several computers with the same issue, yet the battery charges through the USB cable.
I even reflashed the ROM using the SD card method and still have the same issue. What might be going on here??? How can the USB data connection be not working? I've never experienced this with many different phones I've had.
thanks,
Go to Settings, Connections, USB to PC, and untick Enable advanced network functionality.
I tried that, it didn't make a difference. I also tried both Activesync 4.5 and 4.2. Still nothing. I hard reset and soft reset several times - still nothing.
What Firewall is on your PC. Could be this causing the hassle.
Have you tried using a known-working usb lead?
I had this problem also to begin with, google an application called "USBKILLER" and put this .CAB onto your memory card and load this onto the phone.
When your in the application select SERIAL and click YES and this should resolve your problem - I am not sure why this happend but my mate who has the same phone does not have this problem and can resolve it by removing the check box in USB to PC settings
hey guys.... thanks for the input. My firewall is disabled - I read the Microsoft article regarding the ports Activesync uses. But AS works with my other phones, so I know that's not the problem. Same thing with the USB cable. It works with the other phones but not this one.
nicko666, I will try that USBkiller program later tonight. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll let everyone know how it goes.
Found USBkiller Cab File Attached - good luck
I tired the USBkiller program (found it myself earlier) but it also doesn't make a difference. I tried changing the setting to SERIAL in the program and also playing with the "advanced network functionality" and activesync connection settings and it's a no-go.
Still nothing works. Do I have a broken device?
hardware problem
i had the same problem after 1 month of using my p3600 i pay 59 euro to change it because the garanty not include this problem.the service told me that it was my fault !!!!
Hello. Is your PPC detected by Windows in the manager of peripheral? It is necessary that you look at if you have a new network card named "Windows Mobile".
I had that problem. I am sorry, but I think you bought a used and not-functional phone. The problem is probably due to high power that the phone got, probably when charging it through a car-charger. You should NEVER connect the phone to a car charger and then start the car - the power can damage the USB connection. You should always first start the engine and only then connect the phone to the charger.
Anyway, I had the same problem - the USB could charge the phone, but no Active Sync connection. I sent my phone to HTC UK, and after one week I got it back with a new board (they replaced the whole inside of the phone). Free of charge.
If this is the situation with your phone - no software solution will help you.
Damn, that sounds like what's going on with my phone. How do I find out how to have it serviced? I can't find anything on the useless HTC site. Please help....
And thanks to you all for the help so far.

I remember sending them mail regarding the problem, via HTC site (mail: [email protected]).
After all the solutions they suggested didn't work, they called me and asked me to send the phone to the UK (they gave me all the details and were very nice and efficient). I must say that my phone was still at warranty period.
this may sound silly, but have you tried the usb ports on the back of the computer?
for some reason, the usb headers on my motherboard don't seem to recongise the phone, i'm not sure if theres no enough power or what, i've onbly tried the cable in a laptop and that works fine...if i plug them in the front usb ports i get the error in windows 'Your device has malfunctioned, Replace the Device and Try Again' or something very simular, tried the other usb header on the board, same problem, back ports, no problem...all other usb devices work fine in all the ports!
Dear all.
I work for a company that has over 600 of the htc p3300. Some of them will work in the usb and some don't.
I have 4 at the moment, 2 of them will work with the usb and the other 2 won't........
Tries all the stuff mentioned here and nothing helps.
Can't update them because of the usb........
HTC are not a lot of help either......

Hi I had been trying to sort this problem out too, and after reading about starting cars with the device on charge I thought I was doomed. But what stead suggests has just worked for me too. I was using the nearest USB on my laptop but plugin it in round the back has just got it working again. The last time it synced it was 'Repairing' the Active Sync 4.5 setup program run through. I must admit that the cable into the phone is also resting on a pen at the base of the phone- just to make sure....

Weird case of Galaxy Nexus not connecting to USB ports

Hello all, I'm having what I would like to call one of the weirdest cases of USB troubles.
For some reason unknown to me, my Galaxy Nexus will simply not connect to my computer's front USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports whatsoever. It will simply throw the "USB device not found" message and if I'm blessed with a unicorn's presence, it will connect and show my Galaxy Nexus's file system and disconnect whenever it wants, specifically when transferring a file to the phone. Awkwardly enough, this only occurs on OEM Samsung cables, both on the original cable that came with the phone and a new one that I just purchased off eBay a couple of days ago. I have used the cable that came with my ASUS Nexus 7 (first gen) and it connects perfectly. The driver will install successfully and hold a connection until I physically disconnect it. I even gave the cable that came with my HTC G2 a try and the same thing. However, I decided to test this on two other computers, a school computer and a Dell machine I have at home and both of those machines will hold a perfect connection with the Samsung cables. Although I haven't tested it yet, I'm sure it will connect just fine to my laptop and to the USB ports located in the back of the computer (directly to motherboard)
If it helps any, the computer that is having troubles is encased in a Fractal Design Define R4. I'm thinking it could be a faulty USB header but other devices such as my Nexus 7 and various USB flash drives have connected without any issues. I have used USBDeview to uninstall the Galaxy Nexus driver and I have unchecked USB debugging to "ensure" a clean installation. At this point, I'm lost between re-installing Win7 or calling Fractal for what could be a very specific issue against my Galaxy Nexus.
Anybody have an idea on how to solve this? Much thanks in advance!

Yeah it sounds like a faulty usb cable. I have cables too that just won't hold a connection. Make sure you have "usb debugging" checked though when you want to use adb.
What I almost always use these days is wireless adb connection.
Go to settings >> developer options and check "ADB over network". Then in a terminal on your computer, "cd" to the directory you keep adb or adb.exe and type "adb connect 192.168.0.3" (or whatever ip is listed in settings >> developer options).

Thanks for the steps in regards to wireless ADB connection. As much I really want to say it's a faulty cable, I can confirm that the cable will provide a stable connection to the Dell machine I have sitting around and on the school computers as mentioned in the OP. I even got 2 new OEM Samsung cables and neither of them work on the computer that gives me that message with the Samsung cables. It's so frustrating

Phone isn't recognised by computer nor is my USB C stick

Hello,
I hope someone can help. I am trying to get my computer to recognise my phone. I am not rooted and I have Marshmellow 6.0.1
I unlocked developer options. I bought a cable and it worked! The computer saw my phone. However it stopped seeing my phone. Why I don't know! But when it did work I saw the driver was not for the 5x but from my S4. Well since it's not working I ordered the recommended USB cables by Benson Leung Tech Matte. Still unable to see my phone. Tried cables on another computer with same results. The computer I tried it on recognised my phone and then it also stopped seeing my phone.
I also bought a usb c stick to use on my phone. My phone responds to the stick but when I choose for MTP from charging nothing happens and i cannot access the USB Stick. In Dev options MTP is selected. I also noticed that USB tethering is not available. I have no clue what to try next.

USB debugging needs to be selected. Also, you need to toggle to PTP and back to MTP
Install correct drivers onto your pc

Thanks for the drivers. USB Debugging is on. When I toggled Charging popped up instead of PTP and so I kept toggling and it finally went to PTP and so I toggled MTP and it goes back to charging! So I kept at it until it finally went to MTP. Is this normal? I counted 12 tries before changing from charging to PTP! But the computer doesn't see the phone. I did it a few times

i honestly never thought about this, is this even supposed to work without some kind of an OTG adapter. i mean sure, the plugs fit, put do the pins match/work for that configuration?
from how you describe that your phone reacts i would guess it doesn't, and it sounds more like your phone goes into client, as opposed to host mode.
very interested to see what someone with more knowledge of the matter would have to say about plugging a usb-c memory stick directly into your phone.

I can read/write to a sandisk USB memory stick using the proper adapter and using USB OTG file manager for Nexus from the play store.

I've used several phones on my PC and at first it had a little trouble but finally settled in. Kind of like a new ROM. You have to give it a while to settle in and get its groove on.

not really a surprise there, but what OP described was putting a usb-C stick directly into the phone, without any cables or adapters in between, with the question emerging if that is even supposed to work (which in his case didn't) due to possible problems of the pin-layout, etc.

that does not explain his PC suddenly not recognizing his phone anymore though.
at this point it sounds to me like either there still is a driver issue (e.g. the mentioned S4 driver wan't properly uninstalled), or one of the usb ports (phone or pc) has an issue.
try different ports on your PC and make sure other devices work with the ports. if not try if you can get it to work by applying a little pressure in different directions to the cable and listen out for windows' annoying usb sound.
on the other end make sure your phone really is connected correctly to the cable. it should snap in just like the OEM charging cable which took some time getting used to to overcome the resistence of the usb-c port.

Thanks again for your quick reply,
I tried my Samsung Tab II tablet and my old S4 on my PC and they both work as advertised. Recognised right away and I hadn't used my tablet to my PC before. What I think is maybe its the USB on the phone itself?

I think its the phone itself, since it did work briefly. Also with the USB C thumb drive the phone recognises it but will not read the thumb drive. I ordered it from play store I wonder how getting it repaired/looked at is going work Have to wait until Monday to call!
Hello again,
I Hope you guys like some feedback about my issue. Contacted Google and they asked me just about all the same questions and had me do some screen shots and try some of their ideas such as factory reset, trying other computers and other cables. Nothing worked so they sent me a new phone! Just got it yesterday. Would have been here sooner but I was busy!
So got new phone setup and the computer recognizes my phone on PTP but not MTP. Also my driver for the phone is a generic nexus and the it still shows up as a samsung! How can I get the new driver if when i do a search for new driver my computer says I have the best driver already installed? I don't want the driver to still be a problem. So i hope you guys have some answers. Lol! I know you guys do!!

If you had a samsung phone before you need to uninstall all the samsung drivers then install the proper nexus drivers

HTC M9 Connecting to Computer Problem

Hey Guys,
First of all, I am a new member here my name is Salem and its an amazing forum.
Anyway, I have a slight problem with my HTC M9 while connecting it into my laptop. First, when I connect it, the mobile starts charging, and it gives me no option as to change it to Media Transfer or anything... even it gives me "Slow Charging" Error, and my laptop is detecting nothing, as if nothing happened, nor its searching for any drivers...
I went to developer menu and used USB Debugging, and selected USB configuration as MTP, and it didn't work...
I installed HTC Sync to get the drivers, and it is the same.
Can you guys help me? because I wanna root the phone and I tried various Auto Root applications without using the PC and they didn't work. Thank you guys
No signal from the laptop probably means you have a faulty USB cable. Most likely a break in one of the data wires.
Try another good quality usb 2.0 cable.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Same issue. Tried multiple cables
I have the same issue. When I try to plug into any PC a slow charging message pops up but the phone won't give me the option to connect to PC. I have turned on USB Debugging and selected MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). Please help!
I am with TPG. Android 6.0 HTS 7.0 Software number 3.35.617.12
I only bought this phone a week ago and it updated when I turned it on.

Most likely a crap or broken cable. Other cables, other sockets, other pc's are all worth a try.
You should leave the usb port in "charging only". When you successfully connect to a pc the phone will prompt you to allow data transfers to that computer.
I know this because mine does it. I'm sick to death of the effing thing promting me to connect to my xbox one when all i want to do is charge the effing thing... My phone is set to charging only.
I suppose rom choice will affect it too. Mine is rooted stock 6.0.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Still have same problem
I still can't connect my M9 to my PC. Still have slow charge message come up and no option to connect to PC. My work around has been transferring files using WiFi. However, now I need to do a presentation using scrcpy and will probably have to get a new phone. I'm tmepted not to buy HTC again. Pretty frustrating and no fix found on the internet...

Nexus 5x usb data not working

So I got this phone about a week and a half ago cuz my lg g4 bootlooped and I didn't care to fix it. I was excited to be able to root this as my g4 was an unrootable variant, but I can't seem to connect this to my computer for adb access.
Windows device manager doesn't see a USB connection.
I've used multiple ports and computers, all running various windows installs
My phone doesn't see a USB connection, nor does it popup where to change the USB protocol.
I've tried multiple cables, only exception is I dont have a strict USB 3 cable for a computer connection.
I have USB debugging enabled and oem unlocking enabled.
I'm on a family vacation currently but when I get back I'm going to try a Linux install to see if I can get a connection on that. If anyone has any tips Id love them, Google tech support just gave me the page I found on my first Google search. XD and I apologise if this is hard to read, I'm a bit flustered as I don't have much money to buy a new phone with and I'd really like to get this working. Cheers.
