LG G4 Camera and OIS performace - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have read the reviews of LG G4 camera and particularly OIS videos comparison. I came across the jerky videos issue with LG G4 OIS. Also checked this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-bad-ois-t3103334)
I Want to know that does G4 really has some issue with OIS? How's the videos quality with OIS?

If you're walking it's very bad, if you stay steady it helps, so don't walk while recording...

No problems here, recordings seem pretty smooth on both 1080P and 4K while walking
Not sure what's up on his end.

Yup, no problem here too, everything is superb

If you walk like you don't care it will be bad as it tries to compensate too much movement. I walk while filming but try to dump the move with my feet a bit flexed and it works ok for me

OIS in video sucks anyway, it makes the pictures distorted
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acUEAUx4WJI
Edit : the G4's OIS instead of helping stabilize video it even adds some jerky, stoopid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7YomVQb4Vo
The best for pictures, but the worst for video.

Can confirm that the OIS is not good while walking, strange movement that does not look good.

OIS in such a small device is not a 3000$ shoulder mounted gimbal rig, so having jerky video while moving is normal. Plus it is a sign, that it is working.

If you want to disable OIS while shooting a video just get ProShot (you can also disable noise reduction).
Great app. You actually disable it even while shooting the video, really cool feature. Works only in the app.

Of course, but the 6s + OIS works way better while walking.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks a lot for your opinions.
Actually I was comparing the OIS quality of G4 with other phones and I was wandering that why this phone results in lots of jerks while other (like S6) don't. The reviews I have seen on youtube were uploaded back in 2015 and I was thinking that if this OIS issue is a software issue then it should have been fixed by now.
So that's why I just wanted to get the real opinion that is it really an issue (a hardware one) or has it been fixed now (if it was a software bug)? Or if its still the same then can we say that S6 OIS produces much better stable videos then G4?

They lied or they have new LG G4's special new brand..., or they don't know how to watch a video, I told the OIS helps a lot if you tried to stay steady like for taking a pictures, even if you shoot a video but keep steady, but once you make a little big movement faster it starts to be very bad, the OIS move so much that it adds some distortion which make the video so much more jerky than phone which does not have OIS, so the LG G4's OIS is very bad while walking...

I think sample videos would help more, both from those who are claiming that its good and from those who are saying that its not.

I agree, but the problem is that there's no samples with good, because the OIS is not good, simple as it... ^^, Nevertherless, I've never seen a good one.

Well I have seen some mix response on this. Some videos are good and some are not. So may be there is an issue with particular models or firmware version.
Which model are you using and what is the firmware/OS version?

Jello effect w/ video recording. Why hasn't this got more attention?

(can't post links still)
youtube[dot]com/watch?v=gymA26jqtTQ
It's really the only thing that's stopping me from buying the Galaxy Nexus. In my opinion the Galaxy Nexus can't take video if that's what it's producing. Anyone here a photography master of sorts that can shed some light on this issue?
Through my research I've found that the jello effect caused by a rolling shutter can be fixed in post production, but is something like this fixable via software/firmware on the phone?
What's going on? It's a bit shocking that nobody is concerned about this issue.
are you serious? "what's going on?"
it's quite obviously image stabilisation.
The sensor basically just relays data, OMAP camera hardware interface process it (stabilisation etc...) and Android presents, maybe tweaks it a bit and saves it.
So an eventual "fix" would be in OMAP firmware, not Android right?

I don't know, but there is an option in Google Talk to change image stabilisation effect.
I have the same thing, but I think that it is image stabilization.
I've just replicated this issue and must say.. I'm totally not bothered! The image stabilisation is actually pretty good and the ony time i can make it do this is if I jiggle the camera... unless youre planning on trying to mock up an earthquake effect, I dont see this being an action you would do. In fact, due to the good image stabilisation, its pretty hard to do this jiggle accidentally, you must be quite determined to create this "jelly" effect (I'm in the UK, hence I get a jelly effect, not jello )
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091124183445AA8XEj5
If you don't want to read, its because it uses a CMOS sensor. Affects cell phones and DSLRs alike. Hardware related.

May I ask what makes you so sure?
The video effect shown in the original post and in others if you look, mirrors exactly that of the "jello effect" caused by a rolling shutter, i.e. the sensor, more importantly, CMOS sensors. From what I've found: all cameras, even professional DSLR's have this "jello effect" caused by rolling shutters on CMOS sensors. The only, and most common fix I've found is to edit the video in post production.
It's not quite obviously image stabilization considering how this issue is reproduced in the exact same scenario a rolling shutter w/ CMOS sensor would to create the jello effect. Otherwise the issue would occur all the time and not only when panning quickly. The video below should explain.
youtube[dot]com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ITkLwVgxo98#t=61s
This may not be the best example, but it should show you what I am talking about. Others like this can be found by doing a simple Google or YouTube search.
The problem is oscillik is both a) incorrect, and b) an asshole. A dangerous combination to be sure!

LOL, funny stuff.
I know what rolling shutter effect on CMOS based cameras is. This looks more excessive than rolling shutter, and looks more like image stabilisation.
People really need to stop thinking that SmartPhones are the end all be all. Unless a phone is specifically dedicated for a camera as it's main feature, then of course people should be concerned.
People here really plan on shooting lots of hd video with their phone? If quality really matters a dedicated camera would be better served...from what I can see this is pretty trivial. Then again, the only thing I take video of is dyno runs and fun in bed...
Again not hardware involved!!!

Awesome! Glad to see this fixed, and nice find by the way. An update to the default camera app will come I'm sure. Until then this essentially fixed the problem, whatever it was, if image stabilization, I stand corrected.
it is image stabilisation, as has been proven by the fact that using another application gets rid of it.

Here's a 1080p video I took at a Football stadium. Big game, I luckily shot the only goal at Arsenal Vs Man City on Tuesday.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxsdD7iPpnM&feature=g-all
I tried using the LGCamera app mentioned in the YouTube post but it crashes on launch. Has anyone else had any luck?
GSM version running 4.01.
I use 720p because of the 30fps. 1080p is 24fps on the Gnex.
No thanks to 24fps.
That explains why image stabilization is having a hard time at stabilizing the image at that resolution at the frame rate.
I think image stabilization works best at higher frame rates.
My two cents.
Having said that, I do feel rolling shutter is a underrated issue with smart phones and point and shot. I would much rather have 720p without rolling shutter than 1080p with in.
I think post processing like deshaker is some cool stuff too. There are some really cool videos on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaPNf2Rk4qQ

If they could do deshaking in realtime and eliminate rolling shutting... That would be cool. Some day.

HTC One X Pictures/Video

Not sure if this needs to be in Q&A or here, it's my first post so be nice haha!
Just a couple questions that I wanted answering, as I'm planning to get the One X next week.
I've heard a few bits and bobs about the camera - both pictures and video, and just wanted to ask:
1) In general, are the photos a good quality?
2) Is there still a framerate issue with video recording? Does it make much difference?
Thank you!
I know they update the firmware etc, so didn't know if they'd fixed anything at all?

1) The one x takes superb pictures, the best of any phone I've used, and there was a comparison showing that it also out performs the s3 camera noticeably. There are a few threads with pictures people have taken.
2) I haven't noticed any framerate issues, but I haven't recorded much video. If there are any framerate issues it can be fixed with updates.

i doubt htc one x out perform sgs3.. i had gs2 before and what i can say.. sgs2 give a better performance in still photo and video. sgs2 had much more detail and give a higher bitrate in video. and now it's far behind sgs3.. just go check comparison article by gsmarena. also there is thread in here talking about HOX video quality.. just search for it..
guys..there are SuperCameraMod for the Sensation..talk to the dev and see him if he will work on it for hox or not

Thanks for the replies guys, all really helpful Just like making sure in my head all the little answers are answered before I take the plunge!
Thanks again!
The HOX takes excellent photos. From what I read lately as well, it is better then the GS3. The features of the HOX camera are excellent as well. For instant, the panoramic feature is flawless, compared to other phones with this feature, and to all of the panoramic apps I have tried from the market/playstore.
My only let down is playback of video after you use SlowMo ( yes it has a slomo feature ) stutters some times. It could be better, but nothing I think an update will not fix down the track.

[Q] google nexus i9250... Is rooting good?

Hello
i have a problem
when i record a movie with the standard camera app, the audio is veeeeeeeeeeery bad, and the movie is also nothing special.
Is there a way to make it better?
Do you think its better to root the phone?
All other things look ok in my opinion, but im really disappointed with the camera/mic

Yes Rooting is GOD...oh wait..misread something here
Rooting is good if you need access to system functions. I dont know if it will improve your camera sound/picture. Are you recording videos at the highest quality (720p or 1080p use higher bitrate for sound)?
No in your case, since you are clueless what is root.
If you are clueless of what is root, it may do more harm than good.
thx for the answer
i try to record a movie in 1080p, hoping sound also becomes better...
thank u
You certainly can't expect wonders from that tiny mic on gnexus or any other phone...

Question Is my camera working correctly?

Hi guys,
weird question I guess: How do I know my cam is working as intendend?
Tried the CRDroid-ROM, worked great, then I noticed my Cam (Gcam-mod) only does 12,5MP-shots in every mode at max.
Thought it was the ROM, now back to a wiped clean Factory February-image from Google. Yet exactly the same but with way less options.
Still only 12,5MP and compared to my other phones it's not even better. Considering I bought the P6P mainly because of the camera it's a bit of a let-down.
I thought it was 50, 48 and 12,5MP.
Am I too dumb to see my error here or what's up with it?
Thanks for your time.
The camera converts all shots to 12.5 mp. Samsungs does this too. Its false marketing.

Ah! So it does have the physical resolution it marketed but uses that as an antialiasing-kinda-thingie for downsampling? So I'm questioning my sanity for nothing and it's all fine? DAMN

Correct. They use Pixel Binning. That is completely normal behavior. As someone else mentioned Sammy does the same thing.

This actually is false.
You have an option in the camera settings of the Samsung S21 ultra that allows you to take 108mp shots. Full res. They're huge files. But they're awesome when you need all the detail in great lighting. I was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED that there is NO OPTION to change the Pixel 6 Pro to 50MP. In my book it's still a 12mp camera, which really SUCKS when wanted the bigger picture...
Ok didn't know

Question how is the camera quality ?

does Asus rog 6 pro compete with the s22 ultra or iphone 13 pro max ?
Nowhere near.
It's definitely a league below, particularly in low light & video quality. A solid B- compared to the A-listers.
It's okay to good, for general social media requirements/ daytime photography.

I looked a lot of review, the right hardware is there, the main problem is the camera software i will try with gcam apk and/or with some other camera application from Google store. Cameras software is the only weak point of this phone
Nope. You don't buy ROG devices if camera quality is a big thing for you. It does the job - that's it.
Try this gcam from BSG and my config file. Tell me what you think. Cheers.
as mentioned by some, the hardware is there but software is bad, even with gcam the results are poor due to bad API implementation.
6D ultimate here - inconsistent performance. sometimes it can be ok, sometimes it's crap.
imprecise blurring for portraits
lacks detail
inconsistent exposure
generally favours day light, and poor with low light

Snapdragon even worse. Suffers from the exact same issues, however its just worse. It's generally accepted that the camera software is beta at best.
I'd love to see a full proper gcam port done for this phone
This whole phone is obsolete at its price. Everyone knew SD8 Gen 2 is coming shortly after the ROG 6, now it is here and every new phone out there will now smash this gaming phone AND offer a twice as good camera performance at a lower price.

Does the GCam package automatically replace the standard camera app?
Do you like the improvements?
As others, I believe the hardware itself should be just fine (not sure about the lenses, though) but the software is letting the phone down regarding IQ out of the box.
