Marshmallow OTA without Sim? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My nexus 6P has become my daily driver since I got it, but I still use my note 4 daily for a lot of stuff via WiFi (6P has Sim)
I saw the MM Ota should be rolling out over Verizon soon and was wondering if it was possible to update without Sim? Or is it likely someone will upload the Ota here?

Don't get your hops up... Verizon is the last one in this planet to release updates.
Normally you won't be able to get OTA without sim card... But you can always use the verizon software assistant on pc to update

I mean I've seen screens of Verizon note 4's with the update so I think it's gotta be coming soon at the least but thanks a ton for the software assistant tip, I forgot about that

I believe the Verizon Assistant will not work on bad ESN, black listed EMEI or phones not activated with a SIM.

The international version just went out no more than a week or two ago. If past patterns hold, we have at least several more months of waiting. Here's to hoping it'll be better this time around though.

Rootable Phones for Verizon

Just curious... What are some Rootable Phones for Verizon with Custom Rom support? I'm looking to move on from the Note 4.. What do you guys Recommend? Thanks
Majority of phones are escpecially flagship devices look up the model with the word root at the end make sure whatever u find is for your model and your Android version then follow root instructions EXACTLY

Stay away from the Note 4. Its locked down tight, there will be no root.
Keep an eye on this thread and you could possibly buy a Note 4 Developer Edition. You'd have to buy it outright but it'd be worth it. That's how I got mine. If you buy from Verizon or another retail outlet you'll end up paying full price over time anyway. There is no better phone than the N4DE.

Not really useful. The majority have HAD root on lower firmware, ie: note 3.
What would be useful to know is what phones have MAINTAINED root throughout all OTA.
Locked bootloadet is a different story. Almost impossible with all phones after Note 2.

I abandoned 5 verizon lines over the VZW note 4
In my area of the country, T-mobile signal is great, and all their flagships are rootable/rom-able, even the ones that dont have root on other carriers (ATT, Sprint). Note 5 is rooted, rommed on T-mo, not on VZW. I am really sorry to see that; all my old pals after 10 years on verizon are locked out of their phones. I couldn't stand it anymore.
I hope things work out for you. Some folks can't easily switch; or dont want to, and I'm not trying to sell a fanboy stance- just sharing what I had to do to get what I actually wanted to pay for.

I hear you. With five UDP lines, Verizon has me around its pinky. I must play its game, and bend over and take its locked down phones, as they have me addicted to their LTE crack and unlimited hotspot.
Nexus phones, DE phones, and XDA are the silver lining.
Once UDP gets officially killed, it's off to an MVNO.
But here is my list of known rootable phones:
GS3 on latest firmware
Note 2 on latest firmware (4.4.2)
Note 3 ONLY prior to 4.4.4
GS5 on 5.0 (need to downgrade to KK)
And phones I have with NO root.
Note 4 on any firmware
Note 5
V10
Note 3 on 4.4.4

I'm in the same boat brother. I've tried the v10 but I'm addicted to Viper4Android and do pentesting. Root is a mandatory for me.
The thing that pisses me off about Verizon is I should be able to use my Hardware to its full capacity and potential given that I paid for the Hardware in full and I'm not on a monthly payment plan. I think Verizon's rationale is for customer safety, however people who know how to root their phone know how to protect their phone. I can compare it to Cable television.... I refuse to buy Cable because I don't want to pay to watch advertisements. I think it's absurd that these companies can charge you for data or television and then use your own money in way that you did not approve of. Its like bloat for phones or popup advertisements from verizon to buy more upgrades/roadside freaking assistance. I didn't approve of my data to be used by verizon to sell me stuff. My usage in terms of the things transmitted to my phone should be a one way street... nothing should come to my phone that I didn't ask for including Verizon's various pop up services for premium voicemail excetera.
In my opinion its unauthorized use of the things that I paid for and I own. And its stupid that I cant utilize my 600 dollar phone to its potential when I've paid for all services software and hardware.
but Verizon's full of a bunch of sh!t heads anyways that's why either workers are on strike.

This would be good info if it was updated as Verizon phones gain root. I have the Moto Z, bought it before checking XDA, now i'm kicking myself in the ass! Sad thing though, is none of the other Verizon phones even appealed to me, minus the LG G5, but that one i don't think even has root yet either.
I have the LG v10 and rooted but no bootload3r unlock. Now that the note 4 is rootable and the bootload3r can be unlocked, I'm scrapping my v10 and buying the note 4 retail.

For rooting and bootloader unlocking there isn't a Verizon phone better suited than the Nexus 6P. Better than the note 4.

Maybe. But I can replace my battery, insert a SD card and have the S-Pen. The Nexus 6P will get Nougat and whatever will follow while the Note 4 will only get security updates.

Nexus 6p will only get whatever update you allow it. I never take updates when I root. Plus I never stay with the stock ROM. I use CM13. With the Nexus having 128gb of space there's no issues with space but I will agree it needs a swappable battery.

Connectivity Status on 1.53?

Hi all,
I have a VZW 10 running 1.19. I'm interested in knowing if the connectivity issues, specifically Wi-Fi, have been fixed. The patch notes for 1.53 do address it, but has it been fixed.
I know there are workarounds, but this is a $550 phone. Wi-Fi should work out of the box.
Thanks for your help.

1.53 is for general US unlocked and not VZW. 1.53 needs non VZW firmware to work properly.
1.19 is a very old build (US launched with 1.21) so I'd expect a VZW update sometime in the next 30 days.

I'm on 1.19 as well shipped from Verizon. no update was available to 1.21 for me. I'm currently using viper now with 1.19 still, hoping to see something pop up on here :fingers-crossed:
I seem to have wifi issues using standard wifi, but if I use the wifi-5G connection It works flawless

Correct, 1.21 is ONLY for general unlocked versions and not VZW. You won't see a 1.21.617.* or 1.53.617.* update as those are not for your device. In fact you shouldn't use any *.617.* build as the 617 indicates it's not for your carrier but general unlocked.
You must use a VZW build because of firmware and custom VZW settings. Your only choice right now is to wait for VZW to push their build update.

My wifi was fine on 1.21, then was horrible with the 1.53 update. It's mostly alright now with a couple tweaks.

The build identifiers work like this = 1.53.617.5 <--- current gen unlocked build.
1.53 = primary build ID
.617. = is the carrier specific ID
5 = minor build revision ID
You're partly right. A VZW build would look like (taken from an M9 build) 3.37.605.7 where .605. is the VZW carrier ID. More than likely when they release the update it'll be higher than 1.53.*.*
If you're stock recovery and system then you'll get an OTA notification from VZW whenever their updates are available. There may be an RUU available once the updates are pushed and settled.
The OTA will have a new radio, firmware and system updates for your carrier. You must use matching firmware/system build in order to get the best performance. The firmware is the hardware layer while the system is the software/OS layer.
You should not use new system with old firmware or new firmware with old system files.
Great. Thank you. That helps. I will wait patiently for HTC and Verizon to fix this issue.

I know it's a tough spot and being patient can be hard.
I really don't think it'll be long before we see an update for you. The UK and US updates were about 3 weeks apart and we just got our US 1.53.* update a week or so ago. Give it a couple more weeks to pass the carrier approval stage and it'll get pushed out.
For sure, there will be an update. Try to be patient

I haven't experienced this exact issue but what I have experienced as a general drop in signal strength on the 10. I have a side-by-side comparison of signal with my m9 versus the 10 and there's a big difference. I'm on prepaid service so I'm planning on switching to AT&T next month just to see if their service is any better. So far no one from T-Mobile has been able to tell me why my service is so bad considering I have two towers less than 1 mile away from where I live, and when I first started service with T-Mobile about five years ago it was fantastic but I would say in the last six months to a year it has started to go downhill

Any Reason to Expect a Root Solution for a Verizon Note 7?
How about a hypothetical discussion about rooting until then?
I'm on a family plan with Verizon and I don't plan on switching carriers. Does anyone think it's worth me waiting to see if an unlocked/international/developer edition will be released in the coming months that would work on VZW and would be more likely to get a root exploit over the carrier-locked version?
If I pre-order the Verizon version now, I get it next week and I'll get a free 256 GB SD card with it. But I'll be kicking myself if two months later a developer edition or something comes along that would actually work on VZW.
I'd easily wait and pass up the free 256 GB card if it meant that I had a better chance of seeing root someday. Anyone have an opinion on buying now versus waiting?

Nobody knows if, or when the Note 7 will be rooted. I don't think we can expect a root within 3 months, but that's just me. By the time you wait, you might as well just go for the S8
I expect the N930U edition to be released about a month after the carrier release, which might be rootable but I don't expect anything soon. Especially since Samsung claimed they would update their phones to 7.0 within 2-3 months. Why would anyone release an exploit, only to have it patched with a new OS so soon?

Verizon and AT&T versions are the biggest problems. The note 5 and 4 were rooted for a year.
They are all problems since the s7 and s7edge as all Carrier phones were bootloader locked.... They have root now but no bootloader unlock fyi

Verizon firmware but bought from Google

So I got my phone yesterday and it did some updating while I was setting it up and noticed that the latest firmware it installed was NDE63X not V. I bought this from Google not Verizon paid all the money up front so it is fully mine. I have Verizon service, did they just hijack my phone? I have Googled a bit on it and can't find an answer. This worries me since I avoided buying from Verizon so they had no say on updates. I have not gotten any of the Verizon apps automatically added toy phone yet. Thanks for any answer.

If you have a Verizon SIM in the phone, it will get Verizon firmware images regardless of where you bought the phone.
I would recommend flashing the Google OTA's yourself when they release.
Don't worry. You got the verizon firmware because you have a verizon sim. The reverse is true for people who bought their phones from verizon and went to another carrier. Their phones updated to the US firmware automatically.
Verizon bootloaders cannot be unlocked. That is the only difference. Firmware versions are completely independent of this fact.

No. The software sees that you are using a Verizon sim and downloads the version that is optimized for Verizon networks.
Makes the radio work more efficiently with the bands Verizon uses and such things like that. Maybe downloads a set of unique Verizon apps you may want to use for your convenience. You can dismiss these apps or run some other firmware if you wish. It is not hijacking your phone and turning it into an evil, screwed up monster with a locked bootloader or rendering it unrootable.

You may get slightly better performance overseas or on another carrier with different firmware due to the slight differences in the radio, but it will function the same otherwise.

Unlocked phones probably won't see an update till after Christmas, early January as the last beta had the December security update in itand came out about two weeks ago, So it will probably be rolled out with next months security update. They also just released a new version of 9.0 with the Star Wars theme, which also has the December security patch.
I received the update as well on At&t. I can say I am quite pleased on how fast these updates are happening. In a year's span Samsung turned it around, even the S9 and Note 9 users are on the beta before year's end. Bravo.
