Low light - LG G5 Real Life Review

A Bit too Dim
In low light the phone is a bit too dim with auto settings. Similar to the G3.

Missed a chance for a great camera to be amazing!
Ita reliable, fairly stable and of good quality.

a little bit too noisy and green toned when you take a picture in low light condition or in night with artificial light (like yellow street light)
but in manual mode you can set properly the setting (especially the ISO) to remove the noise problem or the green light factor.

Hum maybe we can take pics and post them here but only low light pics

Hi, just sharing as someone asked. It wasn't meant to be a nice image, just a low light example. There are a lot of details and I think it did a good job. Photo is handheld, no flash, auto, main camera.
Note: the acene is actually a bit darker than represented in the photo.

Can you recommend the settings to use? I am new with this phone and have a concert on Wednesday to goto and I would like to get good pics. On my htc one m8 I was able to keep the camera on iso400 and the pics were alright.

depends,
it's manual,
each situation has its own specific settings,
you should study a bit about photography, i'll help you but the guides I know are all in Italian,
alternatively ask someone you know some information, nowadays there are a lot of skilled photographers.

good idea

Was at the Primal Fear show last night at the mod club in Toronto Canada and zoomed in pics all look like garbage... . Worse than my old HTC one m8. The videos fared a bit better once I got the focus to work, but still aren't perfect, the sound didn't turn out great, must have been way too loud for the phone in its life proof case.

No it doesn't make a difference in quality.
The fact that your phone is in a case doesnt dismiss you from cleaning some glass. Convert smudges makes photos look pretty bad.
Edit: wait.. Which camera accessory? If camera module then no.

The low light performance is alright on Auto mode but if you know how to take picture on Manual mode then it's a lot better especially with a tiny touch of Snapseed for sharing.

I had to change the camera because the OEM camera began to malfunction with it's zooming. I think it's ok now as the replacement was supposed to be OEM.

Need normal lighting for photos only and autofocus want quickly

Lotta noise in low light-very disappointing, but yes, has good details and yes, clean the camera glass often, it really makes a difference.

Very bad quality, the fault is in lg camera app. With Gcamera the quality is very good, but with this app I cannot save in sd only in internal

Except you can save to the sd card and the app itself is decent. Quality too (although it varies from really bad to good)

Indoor photos

Can anyone with the phone take some photos indoors at night with a normal room light on (no flash) so we can see what the gain/noise is like?
maybe a comparison with a different phone or digital camera (no flash)?
Interested to see if it's good in low light
cheers
anyone?

Two photos, more or less the same position in a messy office.
One with lights on full, one with lights dimmed right down.
cheers, the low light one is awful, lots of grain and noise
so much noise that i almost couldn't hear myself!
Underexposed too, really not great.
Tempted to borrow a colleague's iPhone4 for comparison shots but I'm not sure I want to risk the wrath... ;-)

Well, that's how photography in low light works. The shutter speed is increased sometimes up to 1/8 s, which roughly translates to 8 fps. That ain't smooth.
the rear camera's quite well, but I hate the fix focus on the front camera.
way tooooooooooo much sharpening in Auto mode......I got the Samsung sensor.
Got a stunning shot of the stars with a 10s exposure. All I can say about this camera is wow.
I think the camera in low light (almost without light) works pretty well.
you can look at this, I was amazed ...
postimg.org/image/refmvvrwr/
It's good but it doesn't touch the LG G4/G5 in low-light, especially since max exposure is 10 seconds on this compared to 30 on the LG devices.
Very good in photos, good in videos but only at 30fps (that's normal, physics applies :3)
The only feature I'd love to get is to use for example 4 pixels for each pixel when recording at 1080p, like that, each pixel is 4 times bigger and gets 4 times more light. It also could be useful in photos but the quality loss will be noticeable (but not in videos)
Very good.

I would not say it blew it out of the water buts it's a shame to see apple using what I believe to be the s7 camera sensor in the new iPhone XS

Blurry images, all the time, totally unacceptable. Using OS 3.2.8
Rated 4, you need to know how to take the best shot. Not exactly the point and shoot but otherwise with manual controls it's really good.

auto, HQ mode, as you can see both shots are handheld as per my shadow on the lower right of the 1st picture.
HQ modes gives cleaner output than manual except if ISO is 100 but we need tripod for that because we need also longer exposure which I believed OIS can't handle longer than 1/3s due to handshakes
Another night shot test after installing the new Oxygen OS 4.0.3 with improved camera in low light.

Needs Improvement
The camera could use an upgrade in software. Blurry and noisy images in low light. But no issues in manual mode.

Use HQ mode for low light still shots, I find this helps a lot with noise and overexposure, HDRa for all others. Also if you are interested you can shoot raw and develop them with snapspeed. The photo on the left I took was a raw image developed by snapspeed. Pure raw lack any post processing so look awful but allow might greater image tuning due to not being compromised to jpeg.
Camera is very acceptable (not that of My S7 Edge) however it is to my liking....

Outdoors are fine. 2 stars because as soon as you are shooting moving subjects, even tiny moves, the pictures become unusable, blurry mess

Agreed. Photo quality of moving objects is horrible (probably the biggest flaw of OnePlus 3T) and indoors (regular everyday lighting you have in indoors) is quite ****ty. Most of the pictures come out quite blurry. Outdoors is fine!
I actually have discovered that in order to get better indoors pictures you have to set Flash to always ON as it really helps to improve image quality, especially regarding the sharpness, blur and better detail overall.

I think HD got renamed to HQ which we have now.
¨
But basically HDR tries to get both bright and dark areas in the pictures to shown without them being totally black or white. Doesn't always mean that picture is better quality tho, can be a lot worse what it comes to noise etc.
Not sure is this correct but found that HQ mode will reduce the noise when taking pictures in dark.

Good point. I mainly need phone camera to take pictures of my kid and I can say that it's pretty much impossible to get good/decent quality indoor pictures while taking a picture of a kid (HQ, HDR modes), except if you set the flash to always ON, where even moving objects come out are pretty good.
If with all my previous phones (no particular order, but phones with which I had no issues taking fast quality pics of my kid -> Iphone 7, xiaomi mi5, galaxy s6, nexus 5x, xperia Z3, xperia Z3 compact) I had no issues getting a decent quality picture of a moving object, with 1+3T its either impossible or very hard to do. It's a fact. Camera is average at most.

camera issues

Hey, iv got my S20 today. Been playing around with the camera and can honestly say I'm truly disappointed. The quality is awful. It finds it really hard to focus on things and the image quality is pants.
Iv just come from a p20 pro which I think was brilliant, I actually rate the camera on the p20 (a 2 yr old phone) 100x better than the S20.
Am I missing something or doing something wrong?
Waiting to fix focus with some updates... The quality is not awful, I think... Not so good as I expected too, but I have a hope that with some next updates, things will get better at some point... maybe
It's bad... Gutted iv got 10 days to return it. Guessing it ain't going to be fixed within that time
On wich software is your phone running? Samsung did fixed the issue with software updates on my phone.
Newest I think, iv got April 1st security updates.
today I cannot focus on my ID , driving license (to send it to my bank) , all photos was blurry in daytime condition shame

Got an s20 plus and the same situation in here, Can even focus anything, or any text on the main camera, as the front camera too. Disappointed, came from the mi9 with Gcam that took awesome pics.
Glad its not just me then, now I don't know if I should keep it or not. The main thing I use is the camera
For my s20+ samdung improved the Camera, esp the autofocus in the past 3 updates.. But still fail to fix the white balance in low light.
Photos taken esp food is always too warm or with red tint. Had to manually adjust white balance with adobe lightroom or snapseed.
I just wish samsung will fix the white balance as it is very obvious it's a firmware bug.
Autofocus is still bad but it improved woth firmware updates. Doesnt really bug me as i always press on the location to focus though..

Well I've got 28 days now as the return centre has closed lol let's see how it goes
I have noticed several things that really annoy me and are making me think about selling it after 2 weeks. Does anyone else notice:
1. Extreme saturation of the colors on picture. Contrast is way too high. I have not been able to fix this.
2. Autofocus is really poor
3. In bright light outside, people almost are orange when using video. Gras is extremely green, it is so ugly.
4. When sending video on Whatsapp, quality decreases extreme. Meaning color is almost gone, quality very low. (I mean way more than the usual decreae because of dropping)
Really dissapoimted given the price of this device.

Grass is Extremely Green?: It was doing that to me too but it wasn't the Camera. It was because in Display I had Screen mode set to Vivid and not Natural. If you have Vivid on ever Picture is going to look oversaturated. It's the screen doing that not the Camera.

Try turn off scene optimization, this will boost collars also.
Or HDR and see if u like it better.
WhatsApp always decrease picture and video quality, if u want it 100% than u should select document and search for your photo or video.

I know this.
Tried the adjustment of the screen but problem remains.
And as I stated in my post; i know quality decreases on whatsapp video messaging (wich makes sense). But in this case the video's go to totally different to no colour, lighting changes, etc. etc.
I know you can expect some quality decrease, but this is absurd.
I keep trying new things but I'm still shocked at the camera, every photo looks blury. I'm not getting a crisp photo no matter what i do.
Iv given up with the 64mp mode as they are the worse pictures! So one of the phones biggest selling points rite there is useless.
10mp does auto focus faster but the lag between pressing the shutter button and it actually taking causes photo blur
Its pretty ok i think

Try to send the photos taken with extreme contrast. If it's still appears on other ppls phone with extreme contrast.
I had this issue.. I noticed photo abnormally warm and over saturated. Then after I transfer the photo to pc, it looks just fine.
Then i saw somewhere on xda, try changing the display setting from vivid to natural. It's much better.

I read on sammobile that they don't think they can fix some of the issues with the exynos chip. Some of the side by side comparison tests with the Snapdragon may as well be a different phone
