QC 3.0 compliant cables? - HTC 10 Accessories

Hi,
the last days brought some fuzz about QC 3.0 vs. USB-C 3.0. From what I learned, the main concern was that QC 3.0 would allow up to 18V where USB-C 3.0 limits it to 15V. I guess this is only of concern if QC 3.0 is configured to use 18V where it could also use 12V.
How many Volts does the HTC 10 use and which USB-C cables (besides the one that comes with the HTC 10) are compliant that they can be used to QC 3.0 the HTC 10?
I ordered these because they are USB-C 3.0 spec compliant and hoped, these would also work for QC 3.0 (not only charging but quick charging):

Would it work to QC 3.0 my HTC 10 when it arrives? Can anyone shed light on this?

AFAIK the charger (bought in Taiwan) that came with the Device supports 5v 2.5A, 9V 1.7A and 12V 1.25A only

Actually, the original USB Type-C specification limits the voltage to 5.25v max ( 4.75v min)...
But there's another specification which is USB Power Delivery, which can handle up to 20V/5A, although it's only on this USB PD... QC does not follow USB PD spec. and the USB 3.0 specification does not allow any proprietary spec. to increase the voltage more than 5.25v.
Regarding the QC 3.0 compliant cable, as long as the cable follows the USB Type-C specification then it's okay, and the best is a cable that follows the USB 3.1 gen 1 Type-C specification as this is what HTC 10 actually have...

specially that "Benson Leung" reviewed them and he approved it ( He's a 'Top 50 reviewer' list), the cables were actually faulty and he gave them 2 stars rating, then the company replaced it with newer version which where perfect and fully compliant with USB Type-C specifications including the requirement of a 56K ohm resistor which was wrong before... and the cables are USB 3.1 gen 1 compliant also so it should have full speed ( not just USB 2.0 speeds ).. but I still didn't receive them nor I have HTC 10 on hand ( not yet released here ) so I cant give my personal opinion on them...

PD 1.0 5.25V max for 2.0 cables. For 3.1 cables it is 20V/5A which is PD 2.0. So honestly I don't see why people are all it isn't compliant. The only difference between the two. Is one can charge while transferring data and the other can't. People just make sure you have a complaint cable and you'll be fine.

Any cable compliant with USB specification. Just because it's a quick charger you are using doesn't mean it needs it own cable.

One thing I will say though. Don't bother using skinny cables. Chances are they don't have enough copper and insulation. Those are probably not even compliant in a lot of cases.

Well, I found my charging cable! 7.96€ shipped to me.

Nice and thick 20AWG power wires, also it's a charge+sync instead of their red colored "charge only".
Which means Quick Charge actually works because there's a digital handshake that needs to happen before Quick Charge works.
With 20AWG wires there's not gonna be a lot of voltage drop.. Perfect for charging.
Now I'll just go and look for a nice USB 3.0 data cable (A to C) as I doubt that PortaPow cable is USB 3.0... Quite unlikely actually.

I got Monocable ones. They are more expensive but have a lifetime warranty AND are BEEFY. 5X cable in the middle. Samsung is the other white one.

I use USB A-C cables that I bought for my Nexus 6P, and all of them are compliant per the USB spec. I've tested many of them with my HTC 10 and they all work just fine via QC 2.0/3.0

I just got these cables from Aukey and the weirdest thing is they don't work with the HTC 10 charger. Just don't charge. So I plugged the cable to my Samsung Quickcharge 3.0?(from my Samsung S7E) and they worked like a charm. So I think this cable may be suspect.

That is very odd... I also purchased these cables (but returned because I preferred the lifetime cable warranty from Monoprice better) and they worked fine with my HTC 10 charger and even charged at Quick Charge 3.0 speeds somehow.... The Aukey support said they were only 30 AWG, so I was a bit surprised they charged at the same/similar speeds to my HTC 10 cable and charger

Yeah man, I literally got this cable yesterday. First thing I did was plug it into my HTC 10 charger...nada. I'm like ah oh....played with it, plugged it into another outlet, same thing. Finally, took the cable and plugged it into my Samsung charger and boom...rapid charge.

I had this exact one, but sadly I sold it with my nexus 6P (part of the offer). Funny thing now the new cable I got does not support the 3.0 Quick charge speeds.

I bought a bunch. Even micro to C. I am one of those lazy people that would rather buy cables for work and home in different rooms so I don't have to move them or carry them.
I have to say the Monoprice ones are more expensive but they look beefy and has a lifetime warranty.

It's such a good investment, I just don't feel like spending too much money on this when it is not REALLY needed if you know what I mean. I just got one for my room and for my car. haha.

Man I bought 5 of the LG wall chargers that charge fast, and every data cable I buy my phone says is slow charging. Does anyone know what or where I can get a good one? These last cable arecawrsome, cloth braided wire, fits great, just slow charging...

I read this article recently about this issue and then ordered one of these to check my USB port outputs. It's weird but the USB 3.0 port on my laptop that is meant to be the one that you can set to be activated for charging stuff when the laptop is off actually has the lowest output compared to the other USB 3.0 & USB/eSATA combo 2.0 ports.
The article recommends The Practical Meter product which does the same thing as the eBay meter but apparently comes with connectors that trick devices into drawing the full 1A/[email protected] USB power. I was trying to find an alternative product (which I would not have to order from the US and be stung with import charges for) but I was not able to. If anyone knows of one please let me know.
Currently, I am charging my G3 through a USB 3.0 port with the eBay meter which states that it's drawing 0.21A/4.80V...I don't really know much about electronics so if someone could tell me if that is good or bad it would be appreciated. Lucky that I saw your post as I am reminded now that I must get a proper wall charger. BTW what is the model number of ur LG charger so I can see the info about it?

Hi, are these chargers genuine LG? The problem with cheap Chinese copies us that they do not include certain components by which you phone decides to use more power. Its the phone that adjusts how much power it is able to draw. For example using standart usb, which if you do you research on internet, only able to supply 500ma of power (0.5A) so the phone detects that and switches to lo power draw. Another reason sometimes for low power charge is that some cheap cables does not include full 4 cables inside??? I know! Crazy! They will not connect your phone to computer because they only have power cables inside and not data cables. Anyway try your original cable with these chargers and your original charger with your non original cables to work out what is capable of what. [emoji106]
And by the way, don't get fooled with that braiding nonsense, it's only to make it look good, but it does not define the quality. [emoji44]
I have been buying Samsung branded cables for a while now, and the all seem to do the trick, the only downside is their length - I want a long cable ant the are very short, but hey, on wireless charger it makes no difference [emoji6]

Hi, you should not incur any import charges to UK, since tax free allowance is £18 or equivalent in other currency. Also. 0.2a or 200ma is a very low charging current, it should take whole night to charge it. I think the charger does not have certain component to let the phone know that it is capable to supply more that a standard usb?. Why not to use you charger supplied with you phone?

Yes I know but often the postage takes it above that and then the VAT comes. I don't know why they include the shipping charges in with the cost of the item but I've been stung in the past like that. For international postage it's $8.50 so brings it to $28.49 or about £17.23 (xe.com) which is usually a little more generous than say Paypal so it's a little risky and might go over the boundary. In any case, I notice that they have UK stockists and also in Canada & Russia...but I have just ordered the PortaPow high speed adapter which I think is basically the same thing but cheaper and more practical and allows a 1A draw for charge.
The current cables I use are a 60cm Samsung U2 data cable with my PC or with the USB wall adapter, a 1.5m generic data one I got in Spain which is extremely well built and strong with a thick cable and solid connectors but I will try the one in the box now you mention and see if that makes a difference.
Using the 1.5m cable gives - Wall: 5.32V/0.79-80A & USB: 4.78V/0.27A. - (0.46A with the other USB ports)
Using the G3 supplied cable gives - Wall: 4.80V/0.80-83A & USB: 4.71V/0.49A - so this cable is better all round and on the USB port.
Using the Samsung gives - Wall: 5.20V/0.79-8.2A & USB: 4.80V/0.21A (The other USB 2 & 3 ports: 5.04V/0.47A)
It seems the USB port I always use and that is for charging when the laptop is off is unpredictable and has something possibly defective with it as it gives 0.45-49A with the G3 cable but much lower with the rest so I will keep the Samsung one for the PC but use the other USB 3.0 port and use the 1.5m on the USB wall adapter.
Do you know how much an actual wall adapter (non USB) gives out? Will it be around the same as a wall USB adapter or much more?
If I put the original dat cable on the wall charger units I purchased, no problem, if I use the New cables on the original wall charger I got with the phone, I get the slow charge message, so the problem has to be the cables

Actually, I just noticed but the LG cable is giving me the charging slowly message too on the other USB 3.0 port...I just plugged it back into the older one that was giving me 0.2A and now it's giving me 0.5A and no slow charge message! WTF is going on?! lol

Charging from a PC irrespective of USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 will always give you a slow charge. The factory charger charges at 1.8A compared to the max of 0.5A from a PC.
So does anyone know of cables that allow 1.8

All the stock cables yu get with phones now a days allow it. Just make sure they are the originals

I guess I need to be the one that says any manufacturer's USB cable that works at all should be able to do at least 1 amp charging. USB spec is .5 amp, so that isn't surprising. Laptops that don't recognize something plugged into the port may not send the full voltage in order to save power, it depends on the manufacturer. The stock cable should easily handle 2.1 amp.
In short, the problem is much more likely to be the charging adapter or the USB port not putting out enough voltage, not the cable itself.
At least its not Apple which requires you to have iTunes installed to charge iDevices properly off of a USB port.

My HTC M8 Quick charger's USB cable seems to work fine with the LG 1.8amp charger but at least here in the UK the HTC charger is difficult to get find. So not the best answer to your query, sorry.

QC 2.0 charger?

I have a QC 2.0 portable charger. Since the 10 is 3.0, anyone know if it's backwards compatible and will simply charge at 2.0 speeds?

It is compatible with QC 2.0.That is not a problem,the only drawback is that you could feel the TRUE Quick as 3.0.
The us version comes with the QuickCharge 3 charger so you will have one if you are in the US. and can use the QuickCharge 2 charger as a backup/office one. Well I should say the unlocked preorder version will. The carrier versions may not but time will tell.
It is backward compatible... Just remember that you need a USB type c cable plugged in to your quick charge 2 charger.

I know that the phone is backwards compatible with 2.0.

Is there a real difference? You still have to have those adapters everywhere you would have a USB C cable, so.....wouldn't an actual C cable serve you better? I suggest getting extra C cables.
Do remember that in everything that involves attachments, there's a level of performance that is lost in the extension. In your case, you will theoretically lose a small amount of electricity in the connection. I may be wrong...but I don't think so.
EDIT: I also don't see how an C adapter will increase data transfer speeds to a PC. If anyone knows more about this through actual testing, please...do share.

I would purchase the USB-A to USB-C cable personally and not an adapter. One, USB-C is reversible (can plug it in either way, not like USB micro), and USB-C usually has thicker wires to support the higher voltage of the quick charge. Also looking at the specifications of the QC 2.0 verses the QC 3.0, there isn't much of a difference.
Believe that faster speeds is true USB-C connection and not using adaptation to USB A. They actually make a USB-C to USB-C cable, but not a lot of computers have the USB-C connection on them.
To take full advantage of qc 3 you also need a usb 3 (type c in this case) with 56k resistance to prevent any problem. The if you want you can look for a superspeed cable that can transfer up to 5 gigs per second since the phone has usb 3.1 gen 1.

Yeah so I ended up buying both lol.
The adapters for when I'm in a bind and don't have a cable on me but have a micro USB cable available.

Let me see if I understand all this correctly...
Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 requires a USB cable with the data lines (not a "charge only" cable) as the device and the charger negotiate the charging voltage and current digitally over the data lines (which are not present in a "charge only" cable). The power lines in the cable need to be gauged appropriately to support the max rated charging current. A cable needs to state that it has large enough power wires (for its length), or simply state that it can support some specified current that's appropriate for your needs.
Now, there are two types of chargers. The static 5V @1A "legacy" chargers that we got with non-Quick Charge capable devices (and that we probably have a dozen laying around), and Quick Charge chargers that utilize the aforementioned digital communication mechanism to set output power.
If we are using a static [email protected] 1A "legacy" charger, we NEED to get a USB A to C cable that contains the 56K Ohm pullup resister to tell the device not to negotiate the charge power with the charger, but rather assume it's a 5V @ 1A charger. This is the "safest" option as the phone will never try to draw more than 1A with this cable, even if you decide to plug it into a Quick Charge capable charger. However, you will lose the capability of realizing faster charging with this cable. These cables are known as USB-C compliant because the 56K Ohm resister is part of that spec below.

No, that's not correct..
If the "product" is a legacy product, eg. anything else than C to C, the 56kOhm resistor is mandatory.
It tells the device to draw default USB power if there's no other information available.
What's default USB power?
If you plug the phone into a USB 2.0 port, it's 5V 0.5A.
If you plug it to a USB 3.0 port, it's 5V 0.9A.
And that's it. End of story.
If the charger advertises itself as "I can provide 5V 1.5A", and the device can support 1.5A, then the device will draw 1.5A from it.
If the charger advertises itself as "I can provide 5V 1.0A", and the device can support 1.5A, then the device will draw 1.0A from it.
What cable should we buy? A one that follows the Type C specification.
One tell tale sign of compliance to the Type C specification with legacy products (anything not C-C) is the advertisement of the 56kOhm resistor because it's the current buzzword thanks to Benson Leung and his cable/adapter/etc. reviews.

And just because a cable says "2.4A capable" or "supports 2.4A charging" means bugger all.
I can pull 2.4A of current across 30AWG conductors just fine.
What comes from the other end is a whole different story.
Read, the amount (or portion) of voltage drop is significant if we're talking about 5 volts.

Which Micro USB to Type C for the 10?

I have found 2 models on Amazon of adapters Micro USB to type C so I won't throw my 3 extra chargers in the garbage.
I will use the HTC stock cable that will come in the box of the 10 as data cable (PC), 1 cable micro USB that I will use with the stock charger, and 2 others for QC 2.0 chargers.
From what I understand, the Aukey is USB 2.0 to Type C 3.1 from the reviews it can drive Chromebook pixel and N5x which are Type C 3.1 but won't use data with OnePlus phones that are USB 2.0
The Xiaomi is advertised as Micro USB 3.0 to Type C 3.1
Note: All the cables on which I will add the adapters are USB 2.0
So which one I should get? (Aukey pack of 3 is perfect for the price)

Be very careful. There are some non-spec USB-C products out there, and they could blow up your device. This problem has been written up on several of the phone websites, and Amazon will not knowingly sell any that are not up to spec. Well, the photo in your post is of an Aukey adapter. Notice how it has a seam on the USB plug, so it's a stamped plug. The Anker adapter has an extruded plug, which is much more durable.

They state this execuse when they were asked why they are Shipping 2.0 cable with the 3.0 charger.
For me I purchased 2.0 usb type c it supports qc 3.0 and it's safe

The phone supports 3.1 gen 1. The cable used is 2.0. If you go to HTC website and check the accessories they only have a 2.0 A to C cable as compatible accessories they sell.

2.0 is supporting quick charge 3.0 so it's enough
Be careful maybe by long term the 3.0 or 3.1 cable can distort your display.

I don't trust those live chat guys they are themselves not htc certified
For me I won't move too much data
I only care about quick charge 3.0 which is thankfully supported even in 2.0 usb_c
So it's better for me to be safe.
I distort my M8 screen by charging it from high powerbanks.

Because usb_c port only supports 3.0/3.1
But there are many cables for this port like 2.0/3.0/3.1
And htc say best for screen safety is 2.0
2.0 can charge very fast and safe.

Question for you:
In order to take advantage of the fastest charging speeds QuickCharge 2.0 or 3.0 supports, wouldn't you need a USB 3.1 cable?
See the 2 attachments for basic 2.0 vs 3.1 USB and QuickCharge specs.
I say this because a standard 3.1 cable should be capable of passing upto 7w while a 2.0 cable is limited to 2.5w while USB-C 3.1 is somewhere near 20w
Also a 2.0 cable max's out at 12v while a 3.1 cable has a ceiling of 20v needed for QC 3.0.
The reasoning appears to be how a 3.0 cable is built with extra pins specifically for passing added power.
I must be missing something here, it appears that QuickCharge 3.0 is pointless on the HTC 10 using a 2.0 cable with the exception of it's more intellegent power throttling.

For anyone in the market for a new quick charger for their car....
I picked up one of these off a large online retailers site. Model CHOE-C0046T Best part was it included a new USB C cable. I suspect by their product listing on their website this item will undergo a single change where the quick charge port itself will be USB C... Right now both ports are USB A with one QC 3.0 and one regular usb port.

I must agree with Dottat on this device. I also picked one up, and must say even at $13.99, it's a hard deal to pass up.
The USB-C cable seems solid. The charger itself is compact and small, so it doesn't protrude insanely far from your
cigarette lighter outlet.
Dottat gave many of the specs, so there's no need to repeat them all here. Suffice it to say, I am a satisfied customer
with this purchase!
Very nice car charger here, and the fact that it comes with a good quality USB type c cable makes it even better. Very small and compact. Great addition to my HTC 10!

So, before i get into this further, i would like to acknowledge that i received a discount on the device to write a review. With that being said, here goes: The highlighted blue USB slot is the QC 3.0, while the other is the 2.4A smartport. I own an HTC10, and it charged my device rapidly without getting hot in the 18 minute trip from work to home. It does trigger the rapid charger connected on the 10, which means it is taking advantage of the QC 3.0. The type-c cable is very well built and solid. This charger is great bang for the buck.
I also just picked this up Monday. I must say I'm impressed. Charges my phone great. Plus I got a free cord with it can't beat that. I recommend this to anyone looking for a 3.0 rapid charger for car.
I wanted to chime in on this since I grabbed one of these off Amazon. The USB cable seems of good quality, as does the actual charger itself. I have two HTC 10 devices and have now used this to charge both of them many times. I experienced no issues so far and everything appears to work quite well. The phones charged up quickly, as I would expect from a QC3 device. This was not a brand I was aware of before purchasing this product, that said I will definitely be looking at their stuff going forward.

I tested this CHOETECH QC 3.0 USB Type C Car Charger with my HTC 10. The charger charged my HTC 10 at full QC 3.0 speeds while testing. So far I have not run into any issues with the charger and it fits into my car's port with no issues. The car charger is actually much smaller than I was expecting,but still fits without issue.

I received a large discount in exchange for a review on Amazon as well. This is the second item I've received from Choetech (both were at a discount and I'd not previously heard of the company) and I've been very pleased with both. This car charger in particular is very nice. I don't think there's a whole lot to say about car chargers; either they perform as advertised or they don't, and this one does. It charges my LG G5 quickly without heating up and is small enough that I can leave it plugged in all the time. I do wish both ports were QC 3.0, but overall, that's the only thing I would change about it. It's a nice bonus that it also came with a decent quality USB-A to USB-C cable.
I too received a Choetech QC 3.0 USB Type C Charger, as I've done some reviews for Choetech in the past. I got this at a discount, but those who have read my reviews in the past know I can be overly critical BECAUSE I get things discounted. This, in the short time I've used it, seems like a hit. I mean, nobody is going to drop their pants for a car charger, right? It's a solid little unit, looks to be well constructed, and comes with a good quality A to C USB cable of decent length and thickness. QC 3.0 on one port, standard charging on the second, and it worked reliably in the week I tested it.
I have also received this device on discount and have zero complaints. Worked great on all three of my USB c devices. All hardware that was included is of top quality and works as advertised. Only thing I wish is that the cord coiled up so that it isn't laid out on the floor of my truck or in my console.

As everyone else said, this charger works great, exactly as advertised. I've used it on a few longer trips now, and have had no trouble getting to full charge nearly as fast as on my home charger. If you have multiple devices, you might want to check out a multi-QC3.0 charger rather than the one QC, one regular port, but for a single phone and a GPS, this works perfectly.
Quick question that might be a little obvious... Can I charge any kind of device on the second (non-blue-non-quickcharge) USB port?

I also got this device and im thoroughly impressed with it.
Puts your phone in quick charge mode after you plug it in and a short car ride later you arrive home with a charged up device.
Highly recommend this to anyone needing a good car charger for their HTC 10 at a good price to look no further than this device.

I'm pretty sure the original htc car charger does not support QC 3.0 rapid charging unlike the Choetech. You will only be able to charge at slower speeds.

Awesome find. I did not see this brand on the qualcomm website. Is it due to list being not up to date? Also do you guys use the phone while it is charging? I pretty much drive around and use gps all day. Would this be in while in charger? If not can I just use the usb c cable this charger comes with and stick it in my regular t Mobile charger? If I use it that way would it be ok to charge and use phone without overheating battery? Thanks in advance

Aukey 3.0 car charger

I had the Aukey 2.0 charger for my V10 already but caved and went for the 3.0 now that I have only one battery for my V20. Okay you need this car charger. It flies. This will hold you over until aftermarket V20 batteries come to the market soon.

Are you getting the charging icon in the upper right corner with the special symbol within the battery icon? A circle with the flash symbol inside.
A non-Quick Charge charging connection shows the battery icon with just the usual lightning bolt that you see on all other devices when charging.
But on the lock screen it should say fast charging and the battery percentage at the very bottom of the display.

I'm not sure why it's happening honestly.
I get the standard lightning bolt charging symbol up top, and just "charging" on the lock screen. It isn't fast by any means either.

Are you using a USB C to USB C cord? I see both of those have C to C ports. Those are going to be fast charging. Just get a C to C cable and you'll be better
Fast charging USB A ports are colored orange - those have green or black which would not be fast charging ports.
If you read the description on the first one, it says the USB c port is the QC port and the USB A port is "AiPower Adaptive Charging USB-A port with dedicated 2.4A output" which is NOT QC and is not recognized by the V20 as a fast charger

Which one are you ordering? They have different kinds(depending on # of ports). If the one you're getting has an orange USB A plug - that is QC 3.0 (Aukey likes to color code their stuff)

Hi Thanks for the suggestion.
Unfortunately, yes I am using a USB-C to USB-C cable and just getting a regular charge I emailed Aukey and they are going through some troubleshooting steps with me. One suggestion was for me to try it on another phone but I don't have another phone with USB-C to USB-C quick charging capabilities. I've also tried different cables to no avail.
Funny thing though is that I'm seeing the same issue with a Tronsmart Quick Charge 3.0. I emailed Tronsmart and they told me that Quick Charge 3.0 is not supported on the LG V20 but is on the LG G5. I don't think that's accurate but checking the Qualcomm website and the list of supported devices that was updated on 09/26 it looks like the V20 is not listed.
However, it seems that this may not be an accurate list and it seems that others have been able to get the QC 3 functionality....perhaps I was sent two faulty chargers from two different manufacturers????

Just wanted to provide an update concerning at least the Tronsmart QC 3.0 charger. So after sending multiple pictures to Tronsmart of their charger providing a regular charge and the stock LG charger providing a fast charge they determined that because the LG V20 is a newer device that they have another product that can provide QC 3.0 using USB-A. My original Tronsmart model is W2P2TE but I was told that I can contact the seller and have them replace it with the W2PTU model.

That sounds completely stupid. If their charger is truly QC 3.0 then it shouldn't matter how new/old a device is. If the device supports 3.0 then their charger should work. Leads me to think that there is something wrong with their QC 3.0 management and they are not Qualcomm Certified (and in fact no where do they list that they have Qualcomm certification)
Even when you look at the description of that "new" charger it says QC 2.0 lol

I have 3 different QC 3.0 chargers and all are giving me the Max output (that my USB multimeter can read)

All 3 of those are giving me 9.2v @ 1.67A for 15w of power and would fluctuate as a QC 3.0 charger is supposed to. That 15w is the limit of my USB multimeter so I'm waiting on a new one that can read higher to see if they can hit 18w of power (but seeing as how the chargers instantly pegged 15w I'm inclined to believe they'll do 18w).

So far only those 3 - Aukey wall charger and car charger and an AIcase wall charger.
Haven't uses an Anker product as of yet and with the revelation that Google may kill Qualcomm QC in future releases of Android I'm gonna hold off on buying anymore

Yes I am thinking for the same sounds like qc3 is more a transition product

I also bought a 5-pack of Aukey braided USB-C to USB 3.0 cables https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-USB-C-Cable-Braided-3-3ft/dp/B01B634WNK/, and they work great with it. Shows the fast charging icon on both ports of the car charger. Unfortunately, I don't have a tester to check the power output.
